Disturbance Effects on the Seed Bank of Mexican Cloud Forest Fragments,

ABSTRACT The density and floristic composition of the soil seed bank was assessed in six cloud forest fragments with different levels of human disturbance in central Veracruz, Mexico. A total of 8416 seeds germinated in 60 soil samples, at 5-cm depth, corresponding to 107 species, 85 genera, and 48 families. Significant differences were found among study sites in seed densities with values ranging from 873 to 3632/m2. Tree species contributed 20 percent of the total soil seed bank in four sites and herbs accounted for the majority of the species in each site. Among tree species, Trema micrantha displayed the highest seed density, accounting for 84 percent of the germinated seeds. In general, the tree species composition of the soil seed bank did not closely reflect the composition of the tree community. Results suggest that disturbance produced by human activities (trail use, selective cutting of trees, livestock) may influence the size and composition of the soil seed bank in forest fragments. Sites where human activity has been reduced showed the highest proportion of dormant seeds. Un total de 8416 semillas germinaron en 60 muestras de suelo, correspondientes a 107 especies, 85 géneros y 48 familias. Se encontraron diferencias significativas entre los sitios de estudio, con valores desde 873 a 3632 semillas/m2. La mayoria de las especies fueron hierbas y en cuatro de los sitios las especies arbóreas contribuyeron un 20 por ciento al total de semillas del banco del suelo. Entre las especies arbóreas, Trema micrantha (L.) Blume (Ulmaceae) presentó la mayor densidad de semillas (84% de las semillas germinadas). En general, la composición de especies arbóreas en el banco del suelo no reflejó la composición de la comunidad de árboles en cada sitio. Los resultados sugieren que la alteración causada por actividad humana (uso de senderos, tala selectiva y pastoreo) puede influir en el tamaño y composición del banco de semillas del suelo en fragmentos de bosque. Fluctuating asymmetry as a bio-indicator in isolated populations of the Taita thrush: a Bayesian perspective

Aim We examined whether developmental instability can be used as a bio-monitoring tool in the endangered Taita thrush (Turdus helleri L.) through the measurement of individual levels of fluctuating asymmetry in tarsus length. Because estimates of the association between developmental instability, stress and fitness derived from traditional regression are biased, we compared parameter estimates obtained from likelihood based analysis with those obtained from a Bayesian latent variable model. Location Taita thrushes were captured and measured in three isolated cloud forest fragments located in the Taita Hills of south-east Kenya. Methods We applied mixed-effects regression with Restricted Maximum Likelihood parameter estimation (performed with SAS version 8.0) and Bayesian latent variable modelling (performed with WINBUGS version 1.3 and CODA version 0.4) to estimate unbiased levels of developmental instability and to model relationships between developmental instability and body condition in 312 Taita thrushes. Results Likelihood and Bayesian analyses yielded highly comparable results. Individual levels of developmental instability were strongly inversely related to body condition in the subpopulation with the lowest average condition. In contrast, both variables were unrelated in two other subpopulations with higher average condition. Such heterogeneity in association was in the direction expected by developmental theory, given that higher condition suggests more benign ambient conditions. The estimated levels of body condition in the three subpopulations did not support their presumed ranking in relation to environmental stress. Developmental instability and body condition are therefore believed to reflect different aspects of individual fitness. Main conclusions Variation in developmental homeostasis, either modelled as observable variable (fluctuating asymmetry) or latent variable (developmental instability), appears a useful indicator of stress effects in the Taita thrush. Because relationships between environmental stress and developmental instability may depend on the extent to which stress-mediated changes in other components of phenotypic variation are correlated, the study of trait asymmetry should preferably be combined with that of other measures of trait variability, such as trait size or organismal condition. Effects of site and fruit size on the composition of avian frugivore assemblages in a fragmented Afrotropical forest

Factors influencing the interaction between fruiting trees and their frugivorous seed dispersers in fragmented Afrotropical landscapes are poorly known. With the use of Mantel statistics we analysed assemblages of frugivorous birds on 58 individual trees belonging to 11 species growing in seven Kenyan cloud forest fragments. Overall, frugivores showed little specialization on particular trees. Fruit size explained a substantial amount of the variation in frugivore assemblages among different tree species at the same site. In addition, frugivore assemblages on conspecific trees were significantly more similar when the trees occurred at the same site. This location effect was attributable to the different sites and forest fragments (of different sizes and disturbance levels) varying in the densities and composition of their avian frugivores, vegetation composition and tree fruiting phenologies. It was consolidated further by the low mobility of most of these avian frugivores, particularly their reluctance to cross between forest fragments. Habitat disturbance and fragmentation may therefore have affected fruit selection, with implications for both seed dispersal and regeneration. [source]
