Selected Abstracts,Chimeric' Grafts Assembled from Multiple Allodisparate Donors Enjoy Enhanced Transplant SurvivalAMERICAN JOURNAL OF TRANSPLANTATION, Issue 3 2009D. R. Saban Certain components of a graft that provoke alloimmunity may not be vital for graft function or critical as targets of rejection. Corneal transplantation is an example of this, because graft epithelium plays a role in allosensitization, whereas corneal graft endothelium,which shares the same alloantigens,is the critical target in allorejection. In this study, we found that exploiting this biology by replacing donor epithelium of an allograft with an allodisparate third-party epithelium yields a marked enhancement in transplant survival. Such ,chimeric' allografts consisted of a C3H/He (H-2k) corneal epithelium over a C57BL/6 (H-2b) epithelial-denuded cornea (or v.v.) and orthotopically placed on BALB/c (H-2d) hosts. Conventional corneal allografts (C3H/He or C57BL/6) or isografts (BALB/c) were also transplanted on BALB/c hosts. Alloreactive T-cell frequencies (CD4+ interferon [IFN]-,+) primed to the graft endothelium were strongly diminished in chimeric hosts relative to conventionally allografted hosts. This was corroborated by a decreased T-cell infiltration (p = 0.03) and a marked enhancement of allograft survival (p = 0.001). Our results represent the first successful demonstration of chimeric tissue, epithelial-denuded allograft plus third-party allodisparate epithelium, in the promotion of allograft survival. Moreover, chimeric grafting can be readily performed clinically, whereby corneal allograft rejection remains a significant problem particularly in inflamed graft beds. [source] Can consumer sentiment and its components forecast Australian GDP and consumption?JOURNAL OF FORECASTING, Issue 8 2009Chew Lian Chua Abstract This paper examines whether the disaggregation of consumer sentiment data into its sub-components improves the real-time capacity to forecast GDP and consumption. A Bayesian error correction approach augmented with the consumer sentiment index and permutations of the consumer sentiment sub-indices is used to evaluate forecasting power. The forecasts are benchmarked against both composite forecasts and forecasts from standard error correction models. Using Australian data, we find that consumer sentiment data increase the accuracy of GDP and consumption forecasts, with certain components of consumer sentiment consistently providing better forecasts than aggregate consumer sentiment data. Sexton For experiments on mechanical products composed of several components, such as a hydraulic gear pump, conventional methods of designing and implementing factorial experiments can be impractical because of the prohibitive costs of obtaining certain components with factors set to prespecified values. A further difficulty is that often some of the factors that are believed to influence the product's performance are not features of a single component but are derived as functions of the dimensions of several components arising from the product's assembly. Experiments are proposed which use a sample of measured components to explore the influence of such derived factors. An algorithmic method for obtaining efficient designs is presented and applied to finding plans for studies on the gear pump. An experiment on the pump is described which involved both conventional and derived factors. This experiment led to new knowledge on how to improve the engineering design of the pump and, in particular, on how to improve its robustness to the varying pressures that are experienced in operation. Bart This article presents findings from an exploratory study into the content and impact of product innovation charters (PICs) in 86 North American corporations. The findings demonstrate that managers have some distinct preferences in terms of the items that they choose to include in a PIC and that certain components seem to be more important to mention than others. The findings also make evident the relationship that PICs have with selected performance measures. The results suggest that product innovation charters, like their mission statement ,cousins', may be of more value than most managers realize. [source] Elapid snake envenomation in dogs in New South Wales: a reviewAUSTRALIAN VETERINARY JOURNAL, Issue 11 2007J Heller Elapid snake envenomation in dogs is a commonly occurring yet poorly described clinical entity. Twelve species of dangerously venomous elapid snakes are found in New South Wales that are capable of causing disease in dogs. Geographical distribution of these species varies, as does their venom composition and systemic envenomation syndromes produced in target species. Elapid venom may be divided into the components of prothrombin activating enzymes, lipases and peptidic neurotoxins. Each species of elapid snake may possess venom components that fit any or all of these classifications. The action of these venom components may result in neurotoxic (pre-synaptic and post-synaptic), haemotoxic (red-cell destruction and coagulation disturbance), cardiovascular, myotoxic and secondary nephrotoxic effects. Marked variability may occur in venom composition between and within snake species, resulting in varying toxicity between species and also potentially unreliable clinical syndromes following envenomation. The existence of certain components consistently within the venom of each snake species allows the broad definition of basic pathological processes and clinicopathological changes resulting from snake species-specific envenomation and these are discussed. Diagnosis of snake envenomation is unreliable if based on clinical signs alone and the use of these signs in conjunction with history, physical examination and laboratory investigation, including snake venom detection kits, is recommended. Treatment of systemic envenomation should be undertaken with initial effective first aid and subsequent administration of snake species-specific antivenom. [source] |
