Regional water resource implications of bioethanol production in the Southeastern United States

Abstract The Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007 mandates US production of 136 billion L of biofuel by 2022. This target implies an appropriation of regional primary production for dedicated feedstocks at scales that may dramatically affect water supply, exacerbate existing water quality challenges, and force undesirable environmental resource trade offs. Using a comparative life cycle approach, we assess energy balances and water resource implications for four dedicated ethanol feedstocks , corn, sugarcane, sweet sorghum, and southern pine , in two southeastern states, Florida and Georgia, which are a presumed epicenter for future biofuel production. Net energy benefit ratios for ethanol and coproducts range were 1.26 for corn, 1.94 for sweet sorghum, 2.51 for sugarcane, and 2.97 for southern pine. Corn also has high nitrogen (N) and water demand (11.2 kg GJnet,1 and 188 m3 GJnet,1, respectively) compared with other feedstocks, making it a poor choice for regional ethanol production. Southern pine, in contrast, has relatively low N demand (0.4 kg GJnet,1) and negligible irrigation needs. However, it has comparatively low gross productivity, which results in large land area per unit ethanol production (208 m2 GJnet,1), and, by association, substantial indirect and incremental water use (51 m3 GJnet,1). Ultimately, all four feedstocks require substantial land (10.1, 3.1, 2.5, and 6.1 million ha for corn, sugarcane, sweet sorghum, and pine, respectively), annual N fertilization (3230, 574, 396, 109 million kg N) and annual total water (54 400, 20 840, 8840, and 14 970 million m3) resources when scaled up to meet EISA renewable fuel standards production goals. This production would, in turn, offset only 17.5% of regional gasoline consumption on a gross basis, and substantially less when evaluated on a net basis. Utilization of existing waste biomass sources may ameliorate these effects, but does not obviate the need for dedicated primary feedstock production. Careful scrutiny of environmental trade-offs is necessary before embracing aggressive ethanol production mandates. [source]


G315.1+2.7: a new Galactic supernova remnant from the AAO/UKST H, survey

ABSTRACT New narrow-band H, imaging and subsequent optical spectra confirm G315.1+2.7, a previously identified candidate supernova remnant (SNR), as a bona fide Galactic SNR. Present observations are based on independent discovery of filamentary optical emission nebulosity on images of the Anglo-Australian Observatory/United Kingdom Schmidt Telescope H, survey of the southern Galactic plane which were found to coincide with existing multifrequency radio detections. Separate medium- and high-dispersion spectra were taken across two locations of this 11-arcmin north,south (NS) aligned optical filament. The resulting spectral signatures were found to strongly confirm the SNR identification based on standard emission-line ratio discriminators which characterize emission from shock-heated gas. The average observed ratios of S ii/H,= 1.13, N ii/H,= 1.43 and S ii 6717/6731 = 1.46, together with the simultaneous detection of [O ii] 3727, [O iii] 5007 and [O i] 6300 Å, all point to a SNR origin of the observed optical emission. There is also an excellent positional coincidence between the new H, filament and the north-east radio arc of G315.1+2.7 seen at several frequencies. Careful scrutiny of the low-resolution but high-sensitivity Southern H, Sky Survey Atlas also revealed a low-level but distinct optical emission arc. This arc precisely correlates with the large, 2.5°, NS angular extent of the proposed new SNR also seen as a fractured structure in the extant radio data. G315.1+2.7 was detected previously at 2400 and 4800 MHz and at 408 and 1420 MHz. We also identified associated radio emission at 843 MHz from the now publicly available Sydney University Molonglo Sky Survey. On the basis of optical imaging and spectra and radio observations at five frequencies, we identify G315.1+2.7 as a new Galactic SNR. The large projected angular extent of the new remnant, together with the distance estimate of ,1.7 kpc and diameter of ,80 pc, make G315.1+2.7 one of the largest remnants known. [source]


An investigation of root-fractured permanent incisor teeth in children

Abstract ,,,The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the type of healing which occurred in root-fractured permanent incisor teeth in children. The objectives were to determine whether gender, age, stage of root development or location of the fracture affected the healing type. The method involved careful scrutiny of clinical records and radiographs of children who attended a unit of paediatric dentistry in a dental hospital. Relevant information was entered onto a data collection sheet. The results were tabulated and analysed by the ,2 -tests using the SPSS statistical package. The results are based on 34 root-fractured teeth in 33 children aged 8,15 years. Root development was incomplete in 27 of the root-fractured teeth and complete in seven teeth. A good healing outcome was seen in 27 (79.4%) of the teeth and poor healing in 7 (20.6%). The only factor which was found to be statistically significantly related to healing was the stage of root development. It can be concluded that root-fractured teeth with immature roots have a better chance of showing good healing than teeth with mature roots. [source]


Eolian processes, ground cover, and the archaeology of coastal dunes: A taphonomic case study from San Miguel Island, California, U.S.A.

Geomorphological evidence and historical wind records indicate that eolian processes have heavily influenced San Miguel Island environments for much of the Late Quaternary. The island is almost constantly bombarded by prevailing northwesterly winds, with peak velocities exceeding 75 km/h and wind gusts reaching over 100 km/h. These strong winds played an important role in the location, formation, and preservation of the island's more than 600 archaeological sites. Excavation and surface collection at a stratified Middle and Late Holocene archaeological site on the island's north coast suggest that wind related disturbances result in significant displacement of light fish bones, produce concentrations of shellfish and heavy mammal bones, and cause significant abrasion, etching, and polishing of bones, shells, and artifacts. These data illustrate that wind not only alters surface materials but can significantly disturb subsurface deposits to a depth of at least 20 cm. Working in concert with a variety of taphonomic processes, wind can play a fundamental role in the preservation of archaeological sites and careful scrutiny during excavation and laboratory analysis is required to delineate its effects. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Management implications of the Macquarie Island trophic cascade revisited: a reply to Dowding et al. (2009)

Summary 1. The management of non-indigenous species is not without its complications. In Bergstrom et al.'s (2009) study, we demonstrated that feral cats Felis catus on sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island were exerting top-down control on the feral rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus population, and that the eradication of the cats led to a substantial increase in rabbit numbers and an associated trophic cascade. 2. Dowding et al. (2009) claim our modelling was flawed for various reasons, but primarily that a reduction in the application of the rabbit control agent, Myxoma virus, coinciding with cat removal, was a major driver of rabbit population release. 3. We explore this proposition (as well as others) by examining rates of Myxoma viral release between 1991 and 2006 (with an attenuation factor for the years, 2003,2006) in association with presence/absence of cats against two estimates of rabbit population size. Myxoma viral release was a significant factor in the lower estimates of rabbit population, but the effect was small, and was not significant for higher rabbit population estimates. By contrast, the presence or absence of cats remained highly significant for both estimates. 4.Synthesis and applications. We re-affirm our position that top-down control of rabbit numbers by cats, prior to their eradication, was occurring on Macquarie Island. Nonetheless, we agree with Dowding et al. (2009) that systems with multiple invasive species represent complex situations that require careful scrutiny. Such scrutiny should occur in advance of, during, and following management interventions. [source]


COPING WITH UNCERTAINTY: HISTORICAL AND REAL-TIME ESTIMATES OF THE NATURAL UNEMPLOYMENT RATE AND THE UK MONETARY POLICY*

The paper derives and compares historical and real-time estimates of the UK natural unemployment rate and shows that real-time estimates are fraught with noise and should be treated with scepticism. A counterfactual exercise shows that, for most of the 1990s, the Bank of England tracked changes in the natural rate relatively successfully, albeit with some recognition lag which, at times, might have led to excessively cautious policy. A careful scrutiny of the minutes of the monetary policy committee meetings reveals that such ,cautiousness' should be taken as evidence of awareness of the real-time informational limitations that monetary policy is facing. The Origin of Aromaticity: Important Role of the Sigma Framework in Benzene

Abstract The physical nature of aromaticity is addressed at a high ab initio level. It is conclusively shown that the extrinsic aromatic stabilization energy of benzene E(ease)B, estimated relative to its linear polyene counterpart(s), is very well-reproduced at the Hartree,Fock (HF) level. This is a consequence of the fact that the contributions arising from the zero-point vibrational energy (ZPVE) and electron correlation are rather small. More specifically, they yield together 2.0 kcal,mol,1to the destabilization of benzene. A careful scrutiny of the HF energies by virial theorem shows further that the kinetic energies of the , and , electrons E(T) and E(T) are strictly additive in the gauge linear zig-zag polyenes, which also holds for their sum Et(T)HF. This finding has the important corollary that E(ease)Bis little dependent on the choice of the homodesmic reactions involving zig-zag polyenes. A detailed physical analysis of the ,- and ,-electron contributions to extrinsic aromaticity requires explicit introduction of the potential energy terms Vne, Vee, and Vnn, which signify Coulomb interactions between the electrons and the nuclei. The Veeterm involves repulsive interaction V between the , and , electrons, which cannot be unequivocally resolved into , and , contributions. The same holds for the Vnnenergy, which implicitly depends on the electron density distribution via the Born,Oppenheimer (BO) potential energy surface. Several possibilities for partitioning V and Vnnterms into , and , components are examined. It is argued that the stockholder principle is the most realistic, which strongly indicates that E(ease)Bis a result of favorable , -framework interactions. In contrast, the ,-electron framework prefers the open-chain linear polyenes. [source]
