Kinds of Capture Terms modified by Capture Selected AbstractsRIVER CAPTURE, RANGE EXPANSION, AND CLADOGENESIS: THE GENETIC SIGNATURE OF FRESHWATER VICARIANCEEVOLUTION, Issue 5 2006C. P. Burridge Abstract River capture is potentially a key geomorphological driver of range expansion and cladogenesis in freshwater-limited taxa. While previous studies of freshwater fish, in particular, have indicated strong relationships between historical river connections and phylogeographic pattern, their analyses have been restricted to single taxa and geological hypotheses were typically constructed a posteriori. Here we assess the broader significance of river capture among taxa by testing multiple species for the genetic signature of a recent river capture event in New Zealand. During the Quaternary an upper tributary of the Clarence River system was diverted into the headwaters of the Wairau River catchment. Mitochondrial DNA (control region and cytochrome b) sequencing of two native galaxiid fishes (Galaxias vulgaris and Galaxias divergens) supports headwater exchange: populations from the Clarence and Wairau Rivers are closely related sister-groups, whereas samples from the geographically intermediate Awatere River are genetically divergent. The upland bully Gobiomorphus breviceps (Eleotridae), in contrast, lacks a genetic signature of the capture event. We hypothesize that there is an increased likelihood of observing genetic signatures from river capture events when they facilitate range expansion, as is inferred for the two galaxiid taxa studied here. When river capture merely translocates genetic lineages among established populations, by contrast, we suggest that the genetic signature of capture is less likely to be retained, as might be inferred for G. breviceps. Rates of molecular evolution calibrated against this recent event were elevated relative to traditional estimates, consistent with the contribution of polymorphisms to branch lengths at shallow phylogenetic levels prior to fixation by purifying selection and drift. [source] KILLER WHALE ATTACKS ON MINKE WHALES: PREY CAPTURE AND ANTIPREDATOR TACTICSMARINE MAMMAL SCIENCE, Issue 4 2005John K. B. Ford Abstract We describe nine incidents of predation or attempted predation of minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) by mammal-hunting "transient" killer whales (Orcinus orca) in coastal waters of British Columbia, Washington, and southeastern Alaska. Pursuits of minke whales were characterized by prolonged chases on a straight heading at velocities of 15,30 km/h. In four of the nine cases the adultsized minke whale gradually outdistanced the killer whales, which abandoned the high-speed pursuit after 0.5,1 h. In one case the minke beached itself and died. Four attacks were successful. In one instance a subadult minke was killed in open water following a chase. In two cases the fleeing minke entered a confined bay and was killed by the killer whales. One adult minke was taken after apparently attempting to seek cover beside a large sailboat. Minke whales made no attempt to physically defend themselves and were killed by repeated ramming or by asphyxiation. Although killer whales are capable of sprinting speeds greater than those of minke whales, it appears that adult minkes can maintain higher sustained speeds and evade capture if sufficient space for an extended escape trajectory is available. Successful predation of minke whales in coastal waters is rare compared to pinnipeds and small cetaceans, the main prey of transient killer whales. [source] Effects of trapping effort and trap shyness on estimates of tiger abundance from camera trap studiesANIMAL CONSERVATION, Issue 3 2004Per Wegge Camera trapping has recently been introduced as an unbiased and practical method for monitoring tiger abundance. In a high density area in the Royal Bardia National Park in lowland Nepal, we tested this method by trapping very intensively within a 25 km2 area to determine the true number of animals in that area. We then tested the effect of study design by sub-sampling the data set using varying distances between trap stations and by reducing the number of trapping nights at each station. We compared these numbers with the density estimates generated by the capture,recapture models of the program CAPTURE. Both distance between traps and trapping duration greatly influenced the results. For example, increasing the inter-trap distance from 1 to 2.1 km and reducing the trapping duration per station from 15 to 10 nights reduced the number of tigers captured by 25%. A significant decrease in trapping rates during successive 5-night periods suggested that our tigers became trap-shy, probably because of the photo flash and because they detected the camera traps from cues from impression pads 50 m from the traps. A significant behavioural response was also confirmed by the program CAPTURE. The best capture,recapture model selected by the computer program (Mbh) gave precise estimates from data collected by the initial 1 km spacing of traps. However, when we omitted data from half the number of traps, thus decreasing the sampling effort to a more realistic level for monitoring purposes, the program CAPTURE underestimated the true number of tigers. Most probably, this was due to a combination of trap shyness and the way the study was designed. Within larger protected areas, total count from intensive, stratified subsampling is suggested as a complementary technique to the capture,recapture method, since it circumvents the problem of trap shyness. [source] Articulated Object Reconstruction and Markerless Motion Capture from Depth VideoCOMPUTER GRAPHICS FORUM, Issue 2 2008Yuri Pekelny Abstract We present an algorithm for acquiring the 3D surface geometry and motion of a dynamic piecewise-rigid object using a single depth video camera. The algorithm identifies and tracks the rigid components in each frame, while accumulating the geometric information acquired over time, possibly from different viewpoints. The algorithm also reconstructs the dynamic skeleton of the object, thus can be used for markerless motion capture. The acquired model can then be animated to novel poses. We show the results of the algorithm applied to synthetic and real depth video. [source] Community Driven Development, Collective Action and Elite Capture in IndonesiaDEVELOPMENT AND CHANGE, Issue 2 2007Aniruddha Dasgupta ABSTRACT In response to the well documented limitations of top-down, modernist and authoritarian approaches that have dominated development, practitioners and academics increasingly promote more community-based approaches. The World Bank uses the term ,community driven development' to describe projects that increase a community's control over the development process. In an analysis of a community driven poverty alleviation project in Indonesia, this article examines the vulnerability of such an approach to elite capture. The expected relationships among a community's capacity for collective action, elite control over project decisions and elite capture of project benefits were not found. In cases where the project was controlled by elites, benefits continued to be delivered to the poor, and where power was the most evenly distributed, resource allocation to the poor was restricted. Communities where both non-elites and elites participated in democratic self-governance, however, did demonstrate an ability to redress elite capture when it occurred. [source] Comparison of p16INK4A and Hybrid Capture® 2 human papillomavirus testing as adjunctive tests in liquid-based gynecologic SurePathÔ preparationsDIAGNOSTIC CYTOPATHOLOGY, Issue 3 2008Aziza Nassar M.D., F.I.A.C. Abstract p16INK4a, cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor, is functionally inactivated in many tumors, including cervical cancer. We compared p16INK4A immunocytochemical staining and Hybrid Capture® 2 (HCII) on SurePathÔ specimens using tissue biopsies (as the gold standard). Their utility in a spectrum of atypical and preneoplastic lesions, and their ability to accurately identify underlying lesions of CIN II or greater was assessed using biopsy follow-up data. One-hundred and seventeen residual SurePathÔ samples were collected: 43 atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS), 47 low-grade (LGSIL), and 27 high-grade (HGSIL) squamous intraepithelial lesions. Two slides were prepared from each sample; one stained with the SurePathÔ autocyte stain and one immunostained using the CINtecÔ p16INK4a Cytology Kit (Dakocytomation). High-risk HPV testing was performed using the HCII DNA test (Digene, Gaithersburg, MD). Available tissue biopsy follow-up data was retrieved. p16INK4a was positive in 32.6% (14/43) ASCUS, 46.8% (22/47) LGSIL, and 48.1% (13/27) HGSIL specimens. HCII DNA test was positive in 41.9% (18/43) ASCUS, 78.7% (37/47) LGSIL, and 96.3% (26/27) HGSIL samples. The sensitivity, specificity, positive (PPV) and negative (NPV) predictive values of p16INK4a and HCII were: 58.7% and 89.8%, 58.6% and 34.6%, 69.2% and 72.1%, 47.2% and 64.3%, respectively. In patients with cervical biopsies, the PPV of HCII (92.3%) results for a biopsy with CINII/III was significantly higher than the PPV of p16INK4a (52%) (P = 0.001). Using liquid-based cytology specimens, HCII is a more sensitive test than p16INK4a for detection of abnormal cytology. HCII has a higher PPV than p16INK4a for identifying CIN II/III. Diagn. Walts M.D. Abstract There is an increased incidence of anal squamous carcinoma and its precursor lesions (anal intraepithelial neoplasia [AIN]) among persons who engage in anal-receptive sex. Analogous to cervical cancer screening, anal Papanicplaou (Pap) smears currently are used to screen these high-risk populations. Human papilloma virus (HPV) has been implicated in anal carcinoma pathogenesis and this study was performed to assess the potential role of HPV DNA testing as an adjunct to anal cytology. We correlated cytological diagnoses and HPV DNA (Digene Hybrid Capture [HC II] assay) in anal specimens collected in SurePath liquid medium from 118 patients; 54.8% of cases diagnosed as atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) and 87.8% diagnosed as low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) or above tested positive for high- risk HPV DNA (B+). High-grade SIL (HSIL) was present in 31 of the 51 patients with follow-up. Although a cytological diagnosis of ASC-US or above was a reliable indicator for AIN, cytology frequently did not accurately predict the grade of SIL in subsequent biopsy. Our findings suggest that reflex HPV DNA testing would be helpful in triaging patients diagnosed with ASC-US. However, patients diagnosed with LSIL or above should go directly to ansocopic biopsy. Sailors M.D. Abstract The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the Hybrid Capture® II (HC II) assay to test for the presence of high-risk types of human papilloma virus (HPV) DNA using specimens in PreservCyt® fixative for up to 21 days after collection. The ability of HC II to determine the presence of HPV DNA in actual patient samples after longer periods of storage has not been shown. To determine if specimens older than 21 days can yield useful results, 207 patient specimens that had been tested for HPV DNA by HC II (primary test) were tested again after a significant period of storage ranging from approximately 2.5 to 13.5 mo (retest). The results of the primary test and the retest agreed in 86% of the cases. The high level of agreement in the results suggests that the presence of high-risk types of HPV DNA can be determined from actual cervical cytology material in PreservCyt® with the HC II assay for at least 3 mo after specimen collection. [source] The use of barrier-connected pitfall trapping for sampling predatory beetles and spidersENTOMOLOGIA EXPERIMENTALIS ET APPLICATA, Issue 3 2001L. Winder Abstract The efficiency of barrier-connected pitfall trapping was compared to conventional single traps or arrays. For ground-active beetles, the use of a pitfall system incorporating a wetting agent with five traps arranged in a cross formation connected by plastic barriers was more efficient than a single dry trap by at least an order of magnitude and at least twice as efficient as five traps without connecting barriers. It is argued that the efficiency of pitfall trapping may be improved markedly by using barrier-connected traps, particularly for some carabid and staphylinid beetles and lycosid spiders. Capture of linyphiids was not improved by the use of barriers and was dependent only on the use of wetting agent and number of traps used. Wilhelm Abstract Resting and actively degranulating mast cells are found on the brain side of the blood,brain barrier. In the periphery, exocytosis of mast cell granules results in the release of soluble mediators and insoluble granule remnants. These mast cell constituents are found in a variety of nearby cell types, acquired by fusion of granule and cellular membranes or by cellular capture of mast cell granule remnants. These phenomena have not been studied in the brain. In the current work, light and electron microscopic studies of the medial habenula of the dove brain revealed that mast cell-derived material can enter neurons in three ways: by direct fusion of the granule and plasma membranes (mast cell and neuron); by capture of insoluble granule remnants and, potentially, via receptor-mediated endocytosis of gonadotropin-releasing hormone, a soluble mediator derived from the mast cell. These processes result in differential subcellular localization of mast cell material in neurons, including free in the neuronal cytoplasm, membrane-bound in granule-like compartments or in association with small vesicles and the trans-Golgi network. Capture of granule remnants is the most frequently observed form of neuronal acquisition of mast cell products and correlates quantitatively with mast cells undergoing piecemeal degranulation. The present study indicates that mast cell-derived products can enter neurons, a process termed transgranulation, indicating a novel form of brain,immune system communication. [source] Chemoselective Reagents for Covalent Capture and Display of Glycans in Microarrays,EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, Issue 3 2010Emiliano Cló Abstract Glycobiology has made very significant progress in the past decades. However, further progress will significantly depend on the establishment of novel methods for miniaturized, high-throughput analysis of glycan,protein interactions. Robust solid-phase chemical tools and new, chemoselective reagents for biologically meaningful display of surface-immobilized glycans are likely to play a key role. Here we present four new bifunctional linkers that allow highly chemoselective capture of unprotected glycans in solution to form glycan-linker conjugates for direct construction of glycan microarrays (glycochips). The bifunctional linkers carry O -linked aminooxy moieties, some with N -substituents at one end and an amino group at the other. In addition, they contain a substituted benzene ring for UV traceability and improved purification of glycan-linker conjugates. NMR spectroscopic studies in solution proved that N -substituted aminooxy linkers provided model glycan-linker conjugates with the ,-glucopyranoside configuration, i.e. the ring-closed form required for biological recognition. Then an ensemble of glycan-linker conjugates were assembled from mannobiose, lactose, and N -acetyl-lactosamine and used for covalent printing of glycan microarrays. The stability of oximes were studied both in solution and on-chip. In solution, two of the linkers provided glycan-linker conjugates with a remarkable stability at pH 4 or higher, on-chip this relative stability was upheld. Two of the linkers, with different properties, are recommended for the glycobiology toolbox for the construction of glycan microarrays from unprotected glycans. Suprayogo Summary The inherent features of Acrisols with their increasing clay content with depth are conducive to reducing nutrient losses by nutrient adsorption on the matrix soil surfaces. Ammonium (NH4+) and nitrate (NO3,) adsorption by a Plinthic Acrisol from Lampung, Indonesia was studied in column experiments. The peak of the H218O breakthrough occurred at 1 pore volume, whereas the median pore volumes for NH4+ and NO3, ranged from 6.4 to 6.9 and 1.1 to 1.6, respectively. The adsorption coefficients (Ka in cm3 g,1) measured were 1.81, 1.51, 1.64 and 1.47 for NH4+ and 0.03, 0.09, 0.10 and 0.17 for NO3,, respectively, in the 0,0.2, 0.2,0.4, 0.4,0.6 and 0.6,0.8 m soil depth layers. The NH4+ and NO3, adsorption coefficients derived from this study were put in to the Water, Nutrient and Light Capture in Agroforestry Systems (WaNuLCAS) model to evaluate their effect on leaching in the context of several cropping systems in the humid tropics. The resulting simulations indicate that the inherent ,safety-net' (retardation mechanism) of a shallow (0.8,1 m) Plinthic Acrisol can reduce the leaching of mineral N by between 5 and 33% (or up to 2.1 g m,2), mainly due to the NH4+ retardation factor, and that the effectiveness in reducing N leaching increases with increasing depth. However, the inherent ,safety-net' is useful only if deep-rooted plants can recover the N subsequently. [source] A Reusable Interface Constructed by 3-Aminophenylboronic Acid-Functionalized Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes for Cell Capture, Release, and CytosensingADVANCED FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS, Issue 6 2010Xue Zhong Abstract A newly developed electrochemical cell sensor for the determination of K562 leukemia cells using 3-aminophenylboronic acid (APBA)-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) films is demonstrated. The films are generated by the covalent coupling between the NH2 groups in APBA and the COOH group in the acid-oxidized MWCNTs. As a result of the sugar-specific affinity interactions, the K562 leukemia cells are firmly bound to the APBA-functionalized MWCNTs film via boronic acid groups. Compared to electropolymerized APBA films, the presence of MWCNTs not only provides abundant boronic acid domains for cell capture, their high electrical conductivity also makes the film suitable for electrochemical sensing applications. The resulting modified electrodes are tested as cell detection sensors. This work presents a promising platform for effective cell capture and constructing reusable cytosensors. [source] H2xMnxSn3-xS6 (x,=,0.11,0.25): A Novel Reusable Sorbent for Highly Specific Mercury Capture Under Extreme pH ConditionsADVANCED FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS, Issue 7 2009Manolis J. Manos Abstract The H2xMnxSn3-xS6 (x,=,0.11,0.25) is a new solid acid with a layered hydrogen metal sulfide (LHMS). It derives from K2xMnxSn3,xS6 (x,=,0.5,0.95) (KMS-1) upon treating it with highly acidic solutions. We demonstrate that LHMS-1 has enormous affinity for the very soft metal ions such as Hg2+ and Ag+ which occurs via a rapid ion exchange process. The tremendous affinity of LHMS-1 for Hg2+ is reflected in very high distribution coefficient KdHg values (>106,mL g,1). The large affinity and selectivity of LHMS-1 for Hg2+ persists in a very wide pH range (from less than zero to nine) and even in the presence of highly concentrated HCl and HNO3 acids. LHMS-1 is significantly more selective for Hg2+ and Ag+ than for the less soft cations Pb2+ and Cd2+. The Hg2+ ions are immobilized in octahedral sites between the sulfide layers of the materials via Hg,S bonds as suggested by pair distribution function (PDF) analysis. LHMS-1 could decrease trace concentrations of Hg2+ (e.g. <100,ppb) to well below the acceptable limits for the drinking water in less than two min. Hg-laden LHMS-1 shows a remarkable hydrothermal stability and resistance in 6,M HCl solutions. LHMS-1 could be regenerated by treating Hg-loaded samples with 12,M HCl and re-used without loss of its initial exchange capacity. [source] Novel Multi-functional Mixed-oxide Catalysts for Effective NOx Capture, Decomposition, and Reduction,ADVANCED FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS, Issue 17 2007J. Yu Abstract In this paper, novel multi-functional mixed-oxide catalysts have been rationally designed and developed for the effective abatement of NOx. CaxCo3,,,xAl hydrotalcite-like compounds (where x,=,0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0) are first synthesized by co-precipitation and calcined at 800,°C for 4,h in air to derive the mixed oxides. The resultant mixed oxides are generally of spinel phase, where the CaO phase is segregated when x,,,2.5. It has subsequently been found that the derived oxides are catalytically multi-functional for NOx decomposition, capture, and reduction. For example, the mixed Ca2Co1Al1 -oxide can decompose 55,% NO at 300,°C in 8,% oxygen, completely trap NO for 750,s, and capture 12.88,and 18.06,mg,g,1 NO within 30,and 60,min, respectively. The catalytic activities of the Ca2Co1Al1 -oxide catalyst have been further improved by incorporating La to form a quaternary catalyst Ca2Co1La0.1Al0.9 -oxide. This catalyst significantly enhances the NO decomposition to 75,%, extends the complete trapping time to 1100,s, and captures more NO at 300,°C in 8,% O2 (19.02,mg,g,1 NO within 60,min). The in-situ IR spectra of the catalysts with adsorbed NO indicates that the major nitrogen species formed on the catalysts are various kinds of nitrites and nitrates, which can be readily reduced by H2 within 6,min at 350,°C. Therefore, the excellent catalytic activity of layered double hydroxide (LDH)-based mixed oxides for NO decomposition, storage, and reduction can be achieved by the elegant combination of normal transition metals. [source] Application of harmonic radar technology to monitor tree snail dispersalINVERTEBRATE BIOLOGY, Issue 1 2009Kevin T. Hall Abstract. Planned conservation efforts for tree snails of the endangered genus Achatinella, endemic to the island of O'ahu, Hawai'i, will include translocations among the remaining wild and captive-bred populations. In order to establish optimal levels of artificial migration among neighboring groups of snails within fragmented populations, efforts to determine natural dispersal rates through direct observation were initiated. Capture,mark,recapture (CMR) efforts have proved inadequate for obtaining the requisite dispersal estimates, due to low recapture probabilities. In addition, snail dispersal beyond the boundaries of a finite CMR study site was indistinguishable from mortality. In the preliminary study reported here, both the low recapture probability and dispersal detection problems of past CMR efforts were addressed by using harmonic radar tracking. This approach yielded rough dispersal estimates that were unattainable using CMR alone by providing 100% recapture rates even beyond the normal survey area boundaries. Extensive snail movements within clusters of connected trees were frequently observed after tracking for merely a few hours, although movements between unconnected trees were rare and recorded only after monthly survey intervals. Just 11 out of 40 tracked snails made between-tree movements (average distance of 4.94±1.52 m) during the entire 7-month study, and provided the only data utilizable for inferring gene flow in and out of subpopulations. Meteorological data loggers were deployed when tracking began to look for an association between such snail movement and weather fluctuations. The resultant data indicate that increases in both wind gusts and humidity facilitate dispersal (R2=0.77, p-value <0.001), and that passive wind dispersal alone may be responsible for many snail movements (R2=0.59, p-value=0.0014). Despite having provided coarse estimates of short-term dispersal and corresponding wind influences, the limitations of the radar method can be substantial. Control of cormorant populations is a management issue in many countries and a predictive population model is needed. However, reliable estimates of survival are lacking as input for such a model 2.,Capture,recapture estimates of survival of dispersive species like cormorants suffer from an unknown bias due to permanent emigration from the study area. However, a combined analysis of resightings and recovery of dead birds allows unbiased estimates of survival and emigration. 3.,We use data on 11 000 cormorants colour-ringed as chicks in the Danish colony Vorsø 1977,97 to estimate adult survival and colony fidelity. Recent statistical models allowing simultaneous use of recovery and resighting data are employed. We compensate for variation in colour-ring quality, and study the effect of population size and winter severity on survival, as well as of breeding success on fidelity by including these factors as covariates in statistical models. 4.,Annual adult survival fluctuated from year to year (0·74,0·95), with a mean of 0·88. A combination of population size in Europe and winter temperatures explained 52,64% of the year-to-year variation in survival. Differences in survival between sexes was less than 1%. Cormorants older than ,,12 years experienced lower survival, whereas second-year birds had survival similar to adults. Colony fidelity declined after 1990 from nearly 1 to ,,0·90, implying 10% permanent emigration per year. This change coincided with a decline in food availability. 5.,Apparently, survival was more severely affected by winter severity when population size was high. This could be caused by saturation of high-quality wintering habitat, forcing some birds to winter in less good habitat where they would be more vulnerable to cold winters. There was thus evidence for density dependence in adult survival, at least in cold winters. 6.,The high population growth rate sustained by European Ph. c. sinensis in the 1970s and 1980s can partly be accounted for by unusually high survival of immature and adult birds, probably caused by absence of hunting, low population density and high food availability. Data on biometrics, demographics and movement from this low-density disturbed population were compared with those of two nearby high-density undisturbed populations (Wytham Woods and Woodchester Park, UK) in order to study fundamental principles of population dynamics and density-dependence. 2.,Badgers moved more between social groups at North Nibley than in the other study areas, particularly in the immediate aftermath of the removal operation. 3.,Recolonization of the vacated habitat occurred in the first instance by young females. 4.,Although in the first year after the BRO no cubs had been reared in any of the culled groups, and although the shortage of sexually mature boars may have limited the reproductive output of sows in the following year, the population took only 3 years to recover to its (already lowered) preremoval density. 5.,Losses from the adult (and cub) population due to mortality or emigration were smaller at North Nibley than at the other sites. 6.,There was much evidence that during 1995 and 1996 density-dependent effects constrained the reproductive output of the high-density populations, and some support for the hypothesis that badgers exhibit the non-linear ,large mammal' type of functional response to density. 7.,Badgers at North Nibley were younger, heavier and in better condition than badgers at Wytham Woods and Woodchester Park. 8.,We argue that the disease dynamics are likely to be different in disturbed compared with undisturbed badger populations, and that this could affect the effectiveness of BROs. DESAI M.D. It is generally accepted that the diagnosis of an epicardial origin of ventricular tachycardia (VT) can be made indirectly by observing VT termination during ablation on the epicardial surface of the heart. There is a caveat, however, which is that termination of VT during radiofrequency current application on the epicardial surface could be due to extension of the lesion beyond the epicardium. Therefore, successful ablation of VT using an epicardial approach does not necessarily prove the reentrant circuit is located superficially. We present a case of a 44-year-old man with VT storm who demonstrated successful termination of VT with radiofrequency current application on the epicardial surface of the heart. This site corresponded to a site where pacing during VT resulted in termination of VT without global capture. Isolated mid-diastolic potentials were only seen at this site as well. We hypothesize that the finding of termination of VT by pacing without global capture supports the argument that the site of pacing is a critical part of the VT circuit. The studies presented here determined which parameters influence the efficacy of a pacing train to capture fibrillating ventricular myocardium. Electrode type, current strength, order of pacing trains, polarity, and VF morphology preceding the pacing trains were investigated. Methods and Results: A 504-electrode recording plaque sutured to the right ventricle of pig hearts was used to record the activations of VF and those resulting from the pacing stimulation. Capture of VF by pacing was determined by observing an animated display of the first temporal derivative of the electrograms. A series of electrodes in a line captured the heart more frequently during VF than did a point electrode. Increasing the current strength to 10× diastolic pacing threshold increased the incidence of capture, but increasing this strength further did not. The second or third train of 40 stimuli had greater capture rates than did the first train during the same VF episode. Anodal and cathodal unipolar, and bipolar stimulation were equally efficacious in capturing VF. VF activation during the 1-second interval preceding pacing was more organized for pacing trains that captured than those that did not. The highest incidence of capture, 46% to 61% of pacing trains, occurred with a line of electrodes at 10× diastolic pacing threshold delivered by the second or third train. Conclusion: The probability of a pacing train capturing fibrillating myocardium can be influenced by the pacing protocol parameters. Cervical samples were taken from 1,500 women, both with normal and abnormal cytological smears, and we found an incidence of 6.6% of HPV infection in Brescia. Overall, 97 samples tested HPV-positive, yielding 18 HPV types. The four most frequent HPV types were: HPV 16, -31, -6, and -58. This approach could be used in ordinary laboratory settings for quick and reliable typing of known and novel HPVs from clinical specimens and it could also be applied to anti-cancer vaccine development. Dunn Abstract Mass spectrometry is the tool of choice to investigate protein phosphorylation, which plays a vital role in cell regulation and diseases such as cancer. However, low abundances of phosphopeptides and low degrees of phosphorylation typically necessitate isolation and concentration of phosphopeptides prior to MS analysis. This review discusses the enrichment of phosphopeptides with immobilized metal affinity chromatography, reversible covalent binding, and metal oxide affinity chromatography. Capture of phosphopeptides on TiO2 seems especially promising in terms of selectivity and recovery, but the success of all methods depends on careful selection of binding, washing, and elution solutions. Enrichment techniques are complementary, such that a combination of methods greatly enhances the number of phosphopeptides isolated from complex samples. Development of a standard series of phosphopeptides in a highly complex mixture of digested proteins would greatly aid the comparison of different enrichment methods. Phosphopeptide binding to magnetic beads and on-plate isolation prior to MALDI-MS are emerging as convenient methods for purification of small (µL) samples. On-plate enrichment can yield >70% recoveries of phosphopeptides in mixtures of a few digested proteins and can avoid sample-handling steps, but this technique is likely limited to relatively simple samples such as immunoprecipitates. In this binary radiation treatment, boron-containing molecules (also called ,BNCT agents') enriched in the 10B isotope, are targeted to the tumor, and irradiated with thermal or epithermal neutrons. Capture of these neutrons by 10B nuclei generates cell-damaging radiation, confined to single cell dimensions. NMR research efforts have primarily been applied in two directions: first, to investigate the metabolism and pharmaco-kinetics of BNCT agents in-vivo, and second, to use localized NMR spectroscopy and/or MRI for non-invasive mapping of the administered molecules in treated animals or patients. While the first goal can be pursued using 11B NMR for natural-abundance samples (80% 11B / 20% 10B), molecules used in the actual treatment are >,95% enriched in 10B, and must therefore be detected by 10B NMR. Both 10B (spin 3) and 11B (spin 3/2) are quadrupolar nuclei, and their typical relaxation times, in common BNCT agents in biological environments, are rather short. This poses some technical challenges, particularly for MRI, which will be reviewed, along with possible solutions. The first attempts at 11B NMR and MRI detection of BNCT agents in biological tissue were conducted over a decade ago. Since then, results from 11B MRI in laboratory animals and in humans have been reported, and 11B NMR spectroscopy provided interesting and unique information about the metabolism of some BNCT agents in cultured cells. 10B NMR was applied either ,indirectly' (in double-resonance experiments involving coupled protons), but also by direct 10B MRI in mice. [source] Capture,recapture models with heterogeneity to study survival senescence in the wildOIKOS, Issue 3 2010Guillaume Péron Detecting senescence in wild populations and estimating its strength raise three challenges. First, in the presence of individual heterogeneity in survival probability, the proportion of high-survival individuals increases with age. This increase can mask a senescence-related decrease in survival probability when the probability is estimated at the population level. To accommodate individual heterogeneity we use a mixture model structure (discrete classes of individuals). Second, the study individuals can elude the observers in the field, and their detection rate can be heterogeneous. To account for detectability issues we use capture,mark,recapture (CMR) methodology, mixture models and data that provide information on individuals' detectability. Last, emigration to non-monitored sites can bias survival estimates, because it can occur at the end of the individuals' histories and mimic earlier death. To model emigration we use Markovian transitions to and from an unobservable state. These different model structures are merged together using hidden Markov chain CMR models, or multievent models. Simulation studies illustrate that reliable evidence for survival senescence can be obtained using highly heterogeneous data from non site-faithful individuals. We then design a tailored application for a dataset from a colony of black-headed gull Chroicocephalus ridibundus. Survival probabilities do not appear individually variable, but evidence for survival senescence becomes significant only when accounting for other sources of heterogeneity. This result suggests that not accounting for heterogeneity leads to flawed inference and/or that emigration heterogeneity mimics survival heterogeneity and biases senescence estimates. [source] The Economics of an Efficient Reliance on Biomass, Carbon Capture and Carbon Sequestration in a Kyoto-style Emissions Control EnvironmentOPEC ENERGY REVIEW, Issue 3 2001Gary W. Yohe This note employs the economics paradigm to sort through the complications of relying simultaneously on biomass fuels, carbon capture with active sequestration and passive carbon sequestration to meet Kyoto-style carbon emission limits. It does so by exploiting the structure of a tax cum repurchase scheme for carbon. Under such a scheme, the carbon content of fossil fuel should be taxed at the point of purchase at a price that matches the shadow price of the carbon emission limit, but carbon embedded in biomass fuel should go un-taxed. The price of biomass fuel would, though, have to reflect the marginal cost of any externalities it might cause and the opportunity cost of its land-use requirements. Captured carbon could be repurchased at a price equal to the shadow price of carbon, net of the cost of active sequestration, itself the sum of private and social marginal costs. Finally, the price of the passive sequestration of carbon should equal the shadow price of carbon, net of the opportunity cost of setting those resources aside. Since a marketable permit system would support direct estimates of the requisite shadow price of carbon, such a system would also provide direct information about base prices for the tax cum repurchase scheme. To support long-term investment in biomass supply and sequestration, though, changes over time in emission limits must be accomplished in a smooth and predictable manner. The effect of the atrial activity synchronization by single site right atrial pacing on atrial defibrillation threshold (ADFT) was investigated in patients with AF. Two series of randomized incremental cardioversion tests, with increasing energy levels from 0.5 to 10 J, were performed in 15 patients with recurrent episodes of idiopathic paroxysmal AF using two 7 Fr "single coil" catheters for internal cardioversion. After induction of sustained AF (> 10 minutes), shocks were delivered, preceded or not by 10 seconds of overdrive local atrial pacing, according to the randomization, using an external cardioverter defibrillator. A total of 187 shocks was delivered to the study population. ADFT was reduced when overdrive atrial stimulation preceded the cardioversion (3.6 ± 1.6 vs 2.9 ± 1.7 J, P = 0.02). Local atrial capture was considered on the basis of 1:1 phase locking between stimulus and atrial activation wave, and constant morphology of atrial wave criteria. Effective atrial capture was obtained in 8 of 15 patients. There was not significant difference in the mean of FF intervals of patients in which atrial capture was or was not stable (209 ± 22 vs 208 ± 28 ms). Patients were then considered according to the outcome of atrial pacing before direct current shock. A marked ADFT reduction was observed in patients with stable capture (3.8 ± 1.7 vs 2.5 ± 1.7 J, P = 0.0003), while no significant difference in ADFT was found when capture was not achieved (3.4 ± 1.6 vs 3.6 ± 1.5 J, P = NS). In conclusion, regularization of atrial electrical activity by atrial capture reduces the ADFT. A constant pacing entrainment seems to lower the energy required for electrical cardioversion by reducing the amount of fibrillating tissue. Methods Statutory/regulatory criteria defining eligible cases are used to adjust counts in the 1998,2001 Minnesota's WC system and the BLS SOII to permit comparison and to evaluate the recent studies. Missing information in the employer database used in the capture,recapture studies is tabulated. An attempt is made to harmonize results with two additional databases counting work injuries. Results Counts in the BLS SOII moderately undercount by 10,16% the number of WC cases. We believe that matching in capture,recapture studies is adversely affected by misperceptions regarding the application of statutory/regulatory eligibility criteria and by missing data. The result is that the reported undercounts in both the BLS SOII and several state WC databases are overstated in the capture,recapture studies. Although three of four databases can be approximately harmonized, the fourth cannot. Conclusions More precisely targeted information is needed before decisions regarding redesign of the BLS survey are made or before legislative or administrative changes in the WC are contemplated.
