Overbank deposition along the concave side of the Red River meanders, Manitoba, and its geomorphic significance

Abstract Slow earth sliding is pervasive along the concave side of Red River meanders that impinge on Lake Agassiz glaciolacustrine deposits. These failures form elongated, low-angled (c. 6 to 10°) landslide zones along the valleysides. Silty overbank deposits that accumulated during the 1999 spring freshet extend continuously along the landslide zones over hundreds of metres and aggraded the lower slopes over a distance 50 to 80 m from the channel margin. The aggradation is not obviously related to meander curvature or location within a meander. Along seven slope profiles surveyed in 1999 near Letellier, Manitoba, the deposits locally are up to 21 cm thick and generally thin with increasing distance from, and height above, the river. Local deposit thickness relates to distance from the channel, duration of inundation of the landslide surface, mesotopography, and variations in vegetation cover. Immediately adjacent to the river, accumulated overbank deposits are up to 4 m thick. The 1999 overbank deposits also were present along the moderately sloped (c. 23 to 27°) concave banks eroding into the floodplain, but the deposits are thinner (locally up to c. 7 cm thick) and cover a narrower area (10 to 30 m wide) than the deposits within the landslide zones. Concave overbank deposition is part of a sediment reworking process that consists of overbank aggradation on the landslide zones, subsequent gradual downslope displacement from earth sliding, and eventually reworking by the river at the toe of the landslide. The presence of the deposits dampens the outward migration of the meanders and contributes to a low rate of contemporary lateral channel migration. Effects of bears on rockshelter sediments at Tanay Sur-les-Creux, southwestern Switzerland

Sur-les-Creux rockshelter is located in the Prealps of southwestern Switzerland. The sequence of deposits in the rockshelter is 80 cm thick and consists of weathered gravels in a phosphate-rich matrix. A few Middle Palaeolithic artifacts and the bones of cave bear (Ursus spelaeus) were recorded in the fill. We present the results of sedimentological, geochemical, and micromorphological analyses of the rockshelter sediment. All analyses suggest an endokarstic origin of the sediments. The alteration cortices of the gravels imply in situ weathering over a long period. The phosphates are essentially biogenic and have an apatitelike nature. Phosphatization and intense mixing of the sediment are attributed to cave bear (digging of lairs, input of excrements, and carcasses). Only rare carnivore coprolites (lynx) were preserved in the cave deposits. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. [source]


Design of a Low-Cost Bamboo Well

Bamboo wells are an economical alternative for water supply wells in developing countries. The design of the bamboo well described in this article was developed based on field tests. Following field experiments, the screen in the bamboo well was fabricated with seven 3-m-long bamboo strips, each 2 cm wide and 1 cm thick. The strips were bolted on 1-cm-wide mild steel rings spaced 30 cm along the length of the bamboo strips, with 9-cm-long galvanized iron pipe end pieces. Pipes used in the bamboo well were fabricated by wrapping polythene sheets on the bamboo screens. Excellent performance, low cost, and good service life justify the use of a bamboo well for ground water withdrawal in developing countries. [source]


Accuracy assessment of the MODIS snow products,

Abstract A suite of Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) snow products at various spatial and temporal resolutions from the Terra satellite has been available since February 2000. Standard products include daily and 8-day composite 500 m resolution swath and tile products (which include fractional snow cover (FSC) and snow albedo), and 0·05° resolution products on a climate-modelling grid (CMG) (which also include FSC). These snow products (from Collection 4 (C4) reprocessing) are mature and most have been validated to varying degrees and are available to order through the National Snow and Ice Data Center. The overall absolute accuracy of the well-studied 500 m resolution swath (MOD10_L2) and daily tile (MOD10A1) products is ,93%, but varies by land-cover type and snow condition. The most frequent errors are due to snow/cloud discrimination problems, however, improvements in the MODIS cloud mask, an input product, have occurred in ,Collection 5' reprocessing. Detection of very thin snow (<1 cm thick) can also be problematic. Validation of MOD10_L2 and MOD10A1 applies to all higher-level products because all the higher-level products are all created from these products. The composited products may have larger errors due, in part, to errors propagated from daily products. Recently, new products have been developed. A fractional snow cover algorithm for the 500 m resolution products was developed, and is part of the C5 daily swath and tile products; a monthly CMG snow product at 0·05° resolution and a daily 0·25° resolution CMG snow product are also now available. Similar, but not identical products are also produced from the MODIS on the Aqua satellite, launched in May 2002, but the accuracy of those products has not yet been assessed in detail. SENSORY EVALUATION OF BROILED AND GRILLED BISON PATTIES BY TRAINED PANELISTS,

ABSTRACT Sensory characteristics of broiled and grilled patties from grain-fed bison were evaluated by a 13-member trained sensory panel. Ground patties (approximately 113 g, 12.2 cm diameter, 0.9 cm thick) from 6 grinding dates were broiled (260C) or grilled (163C) to 71C internal temperature. Cooking time was significantly shorter (p < 0.0001) for grilled than broiled patties, while cooking yields were similar. Broiled patties were judged to have a more gray than brown surface color, a more red than gray interior color, to be more juicy, and to be more tender than grilled, while their aromatic and flavor intensities were similar. Fatty Acid Composition of Beef Intermuscular, Sheep Tail, Beef Kidney Fats and Its Effects on Shelf Life and Quality Properties of Kavurma

ABSTRACT:, The effects of beef intermuscular (BIF), beef kidney (BKF), and sheep tail fats (STF) and storage time on fatty acid composition, the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), free fatty acids (FFA), pH and L*, a*, and b* values, and Enterobacteriaceae counts of sliced vacuum-packaged Kavurma were investigated. Kavurma was made from fresh beef which contained different amounts of melted BIF, BKF, STF, and salt as 10 groups. The Kavurma was sliced 3 to 4 cm thick and was vacuum packed and stored at 4 ± 0.5 °C for 360 d. Animal fat groups (BIF, STF, and BKF) had a statistically significant difference (P < 0.01) in terms of both fatty acid composition and total saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. Used animal fat types and levels in Kavurma production had a significant effect on unsaturated fatty acid composition (except for C18:1n9t) (P < 0.01). C18:1n9c was the dominant fatty acid in all Kavurma groups, and the highest C18:1n9c was determined for 50% STF + 50% BKF (group 6). TBARS and FFA values were affected by the treatment (P < 0.01) and storage time (P < 0.01). The lowest TBARS value was found in group 10 (30% BIF + 35% STF + 35% BKF). There was a significant (P < 0.01) difference in FFA content in Kavurma between 0 and 180 and 360 d, and this value increased during storage time. The a* values of Kavurma decreased during storage, and the greatest decrease was determined between days 0 and 180 of storage. Enterobacteriaceae counts were determined to be under the detectable level in all Kavurma groups during storage. [source]


DO PHYSICAL FACTORS REGULATE PHYTOPLANKTON DISTRIBUTION PATTERNS IN LARGE, SHALLOW LAKES?

Factors that regulate phytoplankton dynamics in shallow, productive lakes are poorly understood, due to their predisposition for frequent algal blooms and sediment resuspension events. In Lake Apopka, greatest phytoplankton biomass reflects wind-induced resuspension of algae (meroplankton) that exists on the aphotic lake bottom in a layer approximately 5 cm thick; this assemblage is dominated by diatoms (>60% of total biomass) that can occur in resting stages. Once exposed to moderate light, meroplankton are capable of growth and photosynthetic rates comparable with surface populations. In Lake Okeechobee, remote sensing was used to assess the basin-wide distribution of suspended particles. Satellite reflectance values agreed well with in situ particle densities at 20 in-lake stations (average r2; LANDSAT = 0.81, AVHRR = 0.53), and maps of algal blooms (r2 = 0.79, p , 0.01). The greatest chlorophyll concentrations occurred in the vicinity of tributary nutrient inputs at the lake's perimeter, while turbidity increased towards the center of the lake reflecting predominant water circulation patterns. These results underscore the importance of physical-biological interactions in lakes. [source]


Effects of decreasing soil water content on seminal lateral roots of young maize plants

Abstract Soil micropores that contain water at or below field capacity cannot be invaded by seminal or first-order lateral roots of maize plants because their root diameters are larger than 10 ,m. Hence, at soil-water levels below field capacity plant roots must establish a new pore system by displacement of soil particles in order to access soil water. We investigated how decreasing soil water content (SWC) influences growth and morphology of the root system of young maize plants. Plants were grown in rhizotrons 40,cm wide, 50,cm high, and approximately 0.7,cm thick. Five SWC treatments were established by addition of increasing amounts of water to soil and thorough mixing before filling the rhizotrons. No water was added to treatments 1,4 throughout the experiment. Treatment 5 was watered frequently throughout the experiment to serve as a control. Seminal-root length and SWC in soil layers 0,10, 10,20, 20,30, 30,40, and 40,50,cm were measured at intervals of 2,3 d on scanner images by image analysis. At 15 d after planting, for treatments 1,4 shoot dry weight and total root length were directly related to the amount of water added to the soil, and for treatments 4 and 5, total root length and shoot dry weights were similar. Length of seminal roots visible at the transparent surface of the rhizotron for all treatments was highest in the uppermost soil layer and decreased with distance from the soil surface. For all layers, seminal-root elongation rate was at maximum above a SWC of 0.17,cm3,cm,3, corresponding to a matric potential of ,30 kPa. With decreasing SWC, elongation rate decreased, and 20% of maximum seminal root elongation rate was observed below SWC of 0.05,cm3,cm,3. After destructive harvest for treatment 1,4, number of (root-) tips per unit length of seminal root was found uninfluenced over the range of initial SWC from 0.10 to 0.26,cm3,cm,3. However, initial SWC close to the permanent wilting point strongly increased number of tips. Average root length of first-order lateral (FOL) roots increased as initial SWC increased, and the highest length was found for the frequently watered treatment 5. The results of the study suggest that the ability to produce new FOL roots across a wide range of SWC may give maize an adaptive advantage, because FOL root growth can rapidly adapt to changing soil moisture conditions. Distribution, sediment magnetism and geochemistry of the Saksunarvatn (10 180 ± 60 cal. yr BP) tephra in marine, lake, and terrestrial sediments, northwest Iceland

Abstract In 1997, seismic surveys in the troughs off northwest and north Iceland indicated the presence of a major, regional sub-bottom reflector that can be traced over large areas of the shelf. Cores taken in 1997, and later in 1999 on the IMAGES V cruise, penetrated through the reflector. In core MD99-2269 in Húnaflóaáll, this reflector is shown to be represented by a basaltic tephra with a geochemical signature and radiocarbon age correlative with the North Atlantic-wide Saksunarvatn tephra. We trace this tephra throughout northwest Iceland in a series of marine and lake cores, as well as in terrestrial sediments; it forms a layer 1 to 25 cm thick of fine- to medium-grained basaltic volcanic shards. The base of the tephra unit is always sharp but visual inspection and other measurements (carbonate and total organic carbon weight %) indicate a more diffuse upper boundary associated with bioturbation and with sediment reworking. Off northwest Iceland the Saksunarvatn tephra has distinct sediment magnetic properties. This is evident as a dramatic reduction in magnetic susceptibility, an increase in the frequency dependant magnetic susceptibility and ,hard' magnetisation in a ,0.1T IRM backfield. Geochemical analyses from 11 sites indicate a tholeiitic basalt composition, similar to the geochemistry of a tephra found in the Greenland ice-core that dates to 10 180 ± 60 cal. yr BP, and which was correlated with the 9000 14C yr BP Saksunarvatn tephra. We present accelerator mass spectrometry 14C dates from the marine sites, which indicate that the ocean reservoir correction is close to ca. 400 yr at 9000 14C yr BP off northwest Iceland. A simple validated GIS expert system to map relative soil vulnerability and patterns of erosion during the muddy floods of 2000,2001 on the South Downs, Sussex, UK

Abstract The soils of the South Downs in East Sussex, England (UK), are dominated by loessic silt (>70 per cent) and are prone to crusting. Continuing erosion of these soils means that they are thin, typically less than 25,cm thick and are becoming stonier, more droughty and less easier to work. Rates of erosion are relatively low but during extreme events, soils are vulnerable and on- and off-site erosion is a current and long-term risk. Property damage due to muddy flooding is of particular concern. Due to a long history of research interest, a rich database exists on the erosional history of an area of approximately 75,km2 of these thin, calcareous South Downs soils. In particular, during the winter of 2000,2001, Hortonian overland flow was common on certain crop types. Consequent sheet, rill and gully erosion was intense. The gullies and rills formed by runoff during these winter events were mapped in detail. In this paper, a method to estimate soil vulnerability to erosion is described and illustrated. Then, to validate the predictive efficacy of the algorithm used, the actual mapped distribution of rills and gullies following the winter events of 2001 on a particularly badly-affected site are compared with predictions from our soil erosion vulnerability model. Methods for adjusting the land-cover weightings to optimise the map fit are outlined. In a further survey of the utility of the map, it was discovered that farmers' recollections of events provided additional verification. Thus, one implication of our research is that erosion models can be validated by inviting farmers to comment on their efficacy to predict known histories. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Permafrost properties, patterns and processes in the Transantarctic Mountains region

Abstract The properties, distribution patterns and thermal processes that influence the active layer and permafrost in the Transantarctic Mountains region of Antarctica, as deduced from our soil investigations since 1964 and drilling investigations since 1990, are outlined. The active layer depth varies from around 80,cm thick in coastal areas to <5,cm in inland and upland regions, due to the effect of the adiabatic lapse rate. Saline, ice-bonded, dry permafrost and transitional types of permafrost all occur. Ice content is highest in ice-bonded permafrost of the coastal regions and lowest in inland dry permafrost where values may be <1%. At the regional scale, ice-bonded permafrost most commonly occurs at lower elevations and beneath younger land surfaces but with increasing elevation, distance inland and land surface age, dry permafrost becomes predominant. At the local scale (<1,m) there are large variations in the depth to the permafrost table due to variations in ground surface features. Permafrost properties are largely governed by solar energy receipt, but albedo, air temperature cooling and available soil moisture strongly modulate the conversion of solar energy receipt into soil heating. Stratigraphy, sedimentology, age and palaeoenvironment of marine varved clay in the Middle Swedish end-moraine zone

ISSN 0300-9483 Deglaciation of the Middle Swedish end-moraine zone and age of the sediment in and between the moraines have been discussed for about a hundred years. The goal of this project was to determine the stratigraphy and age of the sediment in and between the moraines. Inter-moraine flats are underlain by clay, 10,25 m thick, overlying thin sand and gravel or till on bedrock. The clay is overlain by a few metres of sand and gravel. Much of the clay beneath the flats consists of rhythmites that grade from grey to red and are 2,74 cm thick. Our interpretation of these rhythmites as being varves is supported by grain size and mineralogical and elemental variations. Foraminifera and ostracods show that the clay was deposited in an arctic marine environment, while radiocarbon dating of the microfossils indicates that the clay was deposited 12 150 cal. 14C years ago, during the Younger Dryas chronozone (YD). Most of the optical stimulated luminescence dates on the clay are much older, containing quartz sand that was insufficiently bleached. The stratigraphy indicates that the moraines are composed of YD clay pushed into ridge forms during ice-front oscillations. It is not possible to determine how far north the Scandinavian Ice Sheet retreated prior to the YD advance. We neither support nor reject the suggestion that the ice margin retreated to the northern edge of Mt. Billingen during the Allerød, causing the Baltic Ice Lake to drain. [source]


Palaeopedological marker horizons in northern central Europe: characteristics of Lateglacial Usselo and Finow soils

Lateglacial buried soil horizons, which occur widely in sandy aeolian sequences of northern central Europe, were analysed in order to evaluate their regional pedostratigraphical and palaeoenvironmental potential. Data on stratigraphy, sedimentology, pedology, geochronology and palaeobotany from 29 palaeosol-bearing profiles at terrestrial sites are presented. Greyish Ahb and Eb horizons occur, as well as brownish Bwb and BwAhb horizons. They are 5,30 cm thick, showing similar pedological properties except colour, and they frequently bear charcoal typically from pine. Soil classification results in Albic Arenosols (Dystric) and Brunic Arenosols (Dystric) representing palaeosols of the Usselo and Finow types, respectively. Radiocarbon dating of the palaeosols reveals a dominance of Allerød ages followed by Younger Dryas and Preboreal ages. Most luminescence ages on overlying aeolian sands date into the Allerød,Younger Dryas interval. Mapping of all Usselo and Finow soil occurrences (n=96) in northern central Europe known so far reveals a nearly closed Finow soil province between Usselo soil areas in NW Germany and central Poland, mainly situated in NE Germany. Most Usselo soils compiled contain charcoal, indicating widespread and repeated fires. Recent claims that the Usselo soil represents an event layer from rapid aeolian sedimentation caused by an extraterrestrial impact is rejected. Instead, both Usselo and Finow soils can be assumed to be pedostratigraphical marker horizons in northern central Europe and beyond. [source]
