Kinds of Broad-leaved Forest Selected AbstractsForest canopy and community dynamics in a temperate old-growth evergreen broad-leaved forest, south-western Japan: a 7-year study of a 4-ha plotJOURNAL OF ECOLOGY, Issue 5 2001Masahiro Miura Summary 1Forest canopy gap and community dynamics were studied in a 4-ha permanent plot of an old-growth evergreen broad-leaved forest dominated by Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii and Distylium racemosum in the Tatera Forest Reserve, Tsushima Islands, south-western Japan. The forest was affected by a powerful typhoon in 1987 and was monitored from 1990 to 1997. 2In 1990, all woody stems , 5 cm diameter at breast height (d.b.h.) in the plot were identified, mapped and marked, and the state of 1600 5 m × 5 m contiguous quadrats used to locate canopy gaps. Gaps occupied 17.1% of the plot, which contained 4494 tree and shrub stems (total basal area 63.48 m2 ha,1). Gaps were re-censused in 1997 and both marked and newly recruited (, 5 cm d.b.h.) stems were recorded in 1992 and 1997. 3Over 7 years the rates of canopy gap formation and closure were 0.72% year,1 and 1.61% year,1, respectively, mortality and recruitment rates were 0.97% year,1 and 0.99% year,1, and the rates of loss and gain in basal area were 0.95% year,1 and 0.83% year,1. 4The mortality of stems was size-dependent, with those in middle size classes having the lowest rates. Mortality of stems was lower in canopy and higher in the understorey, while the proportion of stems killed by disturbances increased with height. 5Stems that died during the 7 years were predominantly located in newly created gaps, whereas stems were recruited into both established and new gaps. Deciduous broad-leaved species were largely restricted to gaps that remained open throughout the study. 6Both composition and structure of the forest changed in response to disturbance-related effects on canopy dynamics. [source] Determining woodpecker diversity in the sub-Himalayan forests of northern India using call playbacksJOURNAL OF FIELD ORNITHOLOGY, Issue 2 2010Raman Kumar ABSTRACT Tropical forests have exceptional woodpecker diversity, but little is known about the abundance and diversity of woodpeckers in the Indian subcontinent, particularly for the Shorea robusta -dominated moist deciduous forests of northern India. Our objective was to compare the number of woodpecker species and number of individuals detected using playback surveys and visual/aural transect surveys at five sites. Each site was surveyed 5,6 times along a 2000-m transect, with woodpeckers detected using two methods: (1) visual and aural cues, and (2) playing back calls of 13 species at 400-m intervals. Both methods involved similar effort per survey (100,110 min). During surveys, we detected 11 species of woodpeckers. More species and more than twice as many individuals were detected during playback surveys than during visual/aural surveys. In addition, species accumulation curves showed that we detected the species known to be present based on previous work faster with playback surveys than with visual/aural surveys at four of the five sites. During field trials, 97% of targeted individuals (N= 269) of 12 species responded to playback, and 83% of the responses occurred within 1 min of broadcast. The number of species of woodpeckers in our study area (11 species) was typical for a structurally diverse, tropical/subtropical moist broad-leaved forest. Our results demonstrate that playback surveys are more efficient and accurate than visual/aural surveys, and that playback surveys can be useful for assessing and monitoring woodpecker diversity in tropical forests. RESUMEN Los bosques tropicales tienen una diversidad excepcional de pájaros carpinteros, pero se conoce muy poco sobre la abundancia y diversidad de estas aves en la parte norte del sub-continente de la India, particularmente en el bosque deciduo húmedo dominado por Shorea robusta. Nuestro objetivo fue comparar el número de especies y de individuos de carpinteros utilizando grabaciones para censarlos y transectos visuales/auditivos en cinco lugares. Cada lugar fue censado 5,6 veces, cada 400m, a lo largo de un transecto de 2000 m, utilizando pistas visuales y auditivas y grabaciones de 13 especies. Ambos métodos incluyeron un esfuerzo similar por censo (100,110 minutos). Durante los censos, detectamos 11 especies de pájaros carpinteros. Una cantidad mayor de especies y más del doble de los individuos fueron detectados utilizando grabaciones que en los censos visuales/auditivos. Además, las curvas de acumulación de especies mostraron que detectamos las especies que sabíamos estaban presentes (basados en trabajos previos) de forma más rápida utilizando grabaciones que con el método visual/auditivo en cuatro de las cinco localidades. [source] Variation in tree growth, mortality and recruitment among topographic positions in a warm temperate forestJOURNAL OF VEGETATION SCIENCE, Issue 3 2006Riyou Tsujino Abstract: Questions: Do the population dynamics of trees differ among topographic positions and, if so, how does topographic position affect the population dynamics of species that are distributed in a topography-specific manner? Which is the most important life stage in determining vegetation patterns? Location: Primary and secondary warm temperate evergreen broad-leaved forest (40 - 280 m a.s.l.) on the western part of Yakushima Island, Japan. Methods: Mortality, recruitment, DBH growth and distribution of stems (= 5 cm DBH) in a 2.62-ha plot were surveyed in 1992 and 2002 to determine the relationships between population parameters and (1) topography and (2) distribution patterns of 17 common tree species. Results: Common species (n = 17) were classified into three distribution pattern groups: group A, distributed mainly on convex slopes; group B, on concave slopes, and group C, not aggregated with respect to topographic position. Stem mortality, recruitment and DBH growth were greater in group A than in group B within each topographic class. The hierarchy of stem mortality among topographic classes for groups A and B was convex > planar > concave. Stem recruitment density was relatively high on the convex and concave slopes, respectively, for groups A and B. Conclusions The topographical positions of adult trees were not always most suited for adult survival and growth. For group A, the distribution pattern of adults was determined in the juvenile stage, while this was not the case for group B. Studies of juvenile stages are important for understanding the demographic basis of vegetation distribution patterns. [source] Litterfall dynamics and nitrogen use efficiency in two evergreen temperate rainforests of southern ChileAUSTRAL ECOLOGY, Issue 6 2003CECILIA A. PEREZ Abstract In unpolluted regions, where inorganic nitrogen (N) inputs from the atmosphere are minimal, such as remote locations in southern South America, litterfall dynamics and N use efficiency of tree species should be coupled to the internal N cycle of forest ecosystems. This hypothesis was examined in two evergreen temperate forests in southern Chile (42°30'S), a mixed broad-leaved forest (MBF) and a conifer forest (CF). Although these forests grow under the same climate and on the same parental material, they differ greatly in floristic structure and canopy dynamics (slower in the CF). In both forests, biomass, N flux, and C/N ratios of fine litterfall were measured monthly from May 1995 to March 1999. There was a continuous litter flux over the annual cycle in both forests, with a peak during autumn in the CF. In the MBF, litterfall decreased during spring. In both forests, the C/N ratios of litterfall varied over the annual cycle with a maximum in autumn. Annual litterfall biomass flux (Mean ± SD = 3.3 ± 0.5 vs 2.0 ± 0.5 Mg ha -1) and N return (34.8 ± 16 vs 9.1 ± 2.8 kg N ha -1) were higher in the MBF than in the CF. At the ecosystem level, litterfall C/N was lower in the MBF (mean C/N ratio = 60.1 ± 15, n= 3 years) suggesting decreased N use efficiency compared with CF (mean C/N ratio = 103 ± 19.6, n= 3 years). At the species level, subordinated (subcanopy) tree species in the MBF had significantly lower C/N ratios (<50) of litterfall than the dominant trees in the CF and MBF (>85). The litterfall C/N ratio and percentage N retranslocated were significantly correlated and were lower in the MBF. The higher net N mineralization in soils of the MBF is related to a lower N use efficiency at the ecosystem and species level. [source] Passerine Pollination of Rhodoleia championii (Hamamelidaceae) in Subtropical ChinaBIOTROPICA, Issue 3 2010Lei Gu ABSTRACT The pollination ecology and breeding system of the Hamamelidaceae tree species Rhodoleia championii were studied in an evergreen broad-leaved forest in Nankunshan National Forest in Guangdong Province in China. Rhodoleia championii produces lipid-rich pollen grains and dilute nectar (averaging 0.7 mL/d and 9% sugar), with nectar production peaking before 0800 h; the species is self-incompatible and does not set seed asexually. Seven species of nectar-foraging birds visited the inflorescences, with the most common visitors being Japanese white-eyes (Zosterops japonicus, Zosteropidae) and fork-tailed sunbirds (Aethopyga christinae, Nectariniidae). Bumblebees and honeybees played limited roles as pollinators. As documented by fossils from Europe, the Rhodoleia stem lineage dates back at least to the Paleocene. Bird pollination, however, is unlikely to have evolved before the Oligocene when sunbirds arrived in Europe, and pollination by Z. japonicus cannot be much older than 250,000 million years ago, when Z. japonicus diverged from its closest relative. [source] Impact of land use on the hydraulic properties of the topsoil in a small French catchmentHYDROLOGICAL PROCESSES, Issue 17 2010E. Gonzalez-Sosa Abstract The hydraulic properties of the topsoil control the partition of rainfall into infiltration and runoff at the soil surface. They must be characterized for distributed hydrological modelling. This study presents the results of a field campaign documenting topsoil hydraulic properties in a small French suburban catchment (7 km2) located near Lyon, France. Two types of infiltration tests were performed: single ring infiltration tests under positive head and tension-disk infiltration using a mini-disk. Both categories were processed using the BEST,Beerkan Estimation of Soil Transfer parameters,method to derive parameters describing the retention and hydraulic conductivity curves. Dry bulk density and particle size data were also sampled. Almost all the topsoils were found to belong to the sandy loam soil class. No significant differences in hydraulic properties were found in terms of pedologic units, but the results showed a high impact of land use on these properties. The lowest dry bulk density values were obtained in forested soils with the highest organic matter content. Permanent pasture soils showed intermediate values, whereas the highest values were encountered in cultivated lands. For saturated hydraulic conductivity, the highest values were found in broad-leaved forests and small woods. The complementary use of tension-disk and positive head infiltration tests highlighted a sharp increase of hydraulic conductivity between near saturation and saturated conditions, attributed to macroporosity effect. The ratio of median saturated hydraulic conductivity to median hydraulic conductivity at a pressure of , 20 mm of water was about 50. The study suggests that soil texture, such as used in most pedo-transfer functions, might not be sufficient to properly map the variability of soil hydraulic properties. Land use information should be considered in the parameterizations of topsoil within hydrological models to better represent in situ conditions, as illustrated in the paper. [source] Spatial dynamics of regeneration in a conifer/broad-leaved forest in northern JapanJOURNAL OF VEGETATION SCIENCE, Issue 5 2000Yasuhiro Kubota Ohwi (1972) Abstract. This study deals with stand dynamics over a 6-yr period in a conifer/broad-leaved mixed forest in Hokkaido, northern Japan. The annual rates of gap formation and recovery were 81.3 m2/ha and 66.7 m2/ha, respectively and turnover time of the canopy was 125 yr. The recruitment processes of the component species in this cool-temperate forest were governed by different canopy types: gap, canopy edge and closed canopy. Magnolia obovata regenerated in canopy edges, and Acer mono and Prunus ssiori regenerated in canopy edges and gaps. The results suggested that the mosaic structure made up of closed canopy, canopy edge and gap was related to various regeneration niches. Abies sachalinensis had high mortality rates, initiating gap expansion. The transition probabilities from closed canopy or canopy edge to gap for deciduous broad-leaved trees were lower than for A. sachalinensis, which implies that the difference in degeneration patterns of conifer and broad-leaved canopies contributes to the heterogeneity of spatial structure in the mixed forests. Spatial dynamics were determined by a combination of gap expansion by A. sachalinensis (neighbour-dependent disturbance) and gap formation by deciduous broad-leaved trees (random disturbance).
