Selected AbstractsChronic lymphocytic leukemia presenting as cutaneous and bone involvementINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF DERMATOLOGY, Issue 1 2001Maria P. Stefanidou MD An 84-year-old man had a 3-year history of a progressive, painless, papulonodular eruption, that was particularly prominent on the face and extremities. Physical examination revealed firm, bluish-red nodules and plaques, located on the tip of the nose, the cheeks, ears, and distal digits. Skin lesions produced a leonine facies (Fig. 1), deformities of the fingers and toes, finger clubbing, and onyxis. An identical lesion was seen on a postoperational scar on the left cheek. The mucous membranes were spared. The patient had anterior and posterior cervical and bilateral axillary lymphadenopathy and splenomegaly. Figure 1. Leonine facies On admission, the peripheral blood count revealed 260,000/mm3 leukocytes (lymphocytes 97%, neutrophils 2%, and monocytes 1%), a hemoglobin level of 9.5 g/dL, and platelet count of 100,000/mm3. Hypogammaglobulinemia with reduction of immunoglobulin G (IgG) and IgM was found. Radiography of the fingers showed multiple osteolytic lesions of the phalanges and phalangette destruction of the left median finger (Fig. 2a,b). Computed tomography of the chest and abdomen revealed bilateral axillary, mediastinal, and para-aortic lymphadenopathy and spleen enlargement. Figure 2. X-Ray of the hands: (a) ,multiple osteolytic lesions of the phalanges and (b) ,partial destruction of the left median phalangette Skin biopsy specimens from the ear and finger lesions showed a massive nonepidermal leukemic infiltration in the papillary and reticular dermis, with a grenz zone consisting of small lymphocytes (Fig. 3). Subepidermally, a grenz zone of connective tissue is noted Biopsy of the enlarged cervical lymph node showed a diffuse infiltration with lymphocytes. Tissue biopsy from a finger lytic lesion revealed infiltration of bone trabecular and fibrous tissue with a dense population of small- and medium-sized lymphocytes. Immunohistochemical study of cutaneous and bone lesions showed that the infiltrate in both biopsies consisted mainly of B lymphocytes (CD20+, CD45R+, CD45Ro,, OPD4,). Peripheral blood smear had a B-cell phenotype (CD19 98%, CD20 97%, CD23 99%, CD25 40%, CD5 90%, HLA-DR 100%). Bone marrow smear and immunophenotyping surface marker analysis found a diffuse pattern of B-lymphocytic infiltration. A diagnosis of B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia stage C (Binet staging system), with specific cutaneous and bone lesions, was established. The patient received chemotherapy with chlorambucil and methylprednisolone, which resulted in improvement of the hematologic profile. Two years later, the cutaneous lesions showed partial remission. [source] SHRIMP zircon and EPMA monazite dating of granitic rocks from the Maizuru terrane, southwest Japan: Correlation with East Asian Paleozoic terranes and geological implicationsISLAND ARC, Issue 3 2008Masahiro Fujii Abstract The Maizuru terrane, distributed in the Inner Zone of southwest Japan, is divided into three subzones (Northern, Central and Southern), each with distinct lithological associations. In clear contrast with the Southern zone consisting of the Yakuno ophiolite, the Northern zone is subdivided into the western and eastern bodies by a high-angle fault, recognized mainly by the presence of deformed granitic rocks and pelitic gneiss. This association suggests an affinity with a mature continental block; this is supported by the mode of occurrence, and petrological and isotopic data. Newly obtained sensitive high mass-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) zircon U,Pb ages reveal the intrusion ages of 424 ± 16 and 405 ± 18 Ma (Siluro,Devonian) for the granites from the western body, and 249 ± 10 and 243 ± 19 Ma (Permo,Triassic) for the granodiorites from the eastern body. The granites in the western body also show inherited zircon ages of around 580 and 765 Ma. In addition, electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) monazite U,Th,total Pb dating gives around 475,460 Ma. The age of intrusion, inherited ages, mode of occurrence, and geological setting of the Siluro,Devonian granites of the Northern zone all show similarities with those of the Khanka Massif, southern Primoye, Russia, and the Hikami granitic rocks of the South Kitakami terrane, Northeast Japan. We propose that both the Siluro,Devonian and Permo,Triassic granitic rocks of the Northern zone are likely to have been juxtaposed through the Triassic,Late Jurassic dextral strike-slip movement, and to have originated from the Khanka Massif and the Hida terrane, respectively. This study strongly supports the importance of the strike-slip movement as a mechanism causing the structural rearrangement of the Paleozoic,Mesozoic terranes in the Japanese Islands, as well as in East Asia. [source] A Quantitative Study of Fault Zone SealingACTA GEOLOGICA SINICA (ENGLISH EDITION), Issue 1 2010Yang LI Abstract: A fault is not simply a plane, but a zone consisting of a series of broken planes or lower faults. The greater the scale of faults, the wider and more complex the fault zone is. Fault-sealing properties are influenced by the fault zone itself, whose fault displacement, depth, net-to-gross-ratio of mudstone, fault plane angle, and fault mechanical properties play important controlling roles. The sealing of hydrocarbon by the fault zone depends on whether the fault zone can form a continuous sealing zone and if the pore throats connecting those fault zones are small enough. The concept of fault zone-sealing potential is proposed here, and a quantitative formula is established by using a great amount of practical statistical data as well as the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method, which is a comprehensive characterization parameter to judge whether or not fault zones could seal oil hydrocarbon. The greater the value of the fault zone-sealing potential, the better sealed the fault is. For example, with increasing depth, the sealing degree of the Xin 68 Fault in the Dongxin 1 oilfield changes greatly, reflecting the complexity of fault-sealing properties. [source] The Mixing Efficiency of an Eccentric-Disc Kneading Zone in Intermeshing Co- and Counter-Rotating Twin-Screw ExtrudersCHEMICAL ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY (CET), Issue 3 2004H. Brod Abstract The distributive mixing efficiency of a twin-screw extruder kneading zone consisting of eccentric disc elements was measured using an online video technique. Both co- and counter-rotation were examined. Viscous Newtonian silicone oil was used as model liquid and black iron oxide pigment served as tracer substance. Under isoviscous, creeping flow and non-diffusive conditions and for a fixed flow rate ratio of the colored and uncolored feed streams, the intensity of segregation S is only a function of the kinematic parameter , (the ratio of the imposed extruder throughput and the throughput at zero axial pressure gradient). The measured dependency of S on , is in qualitative agreement with the results of Pawlowski for a single screw extruder. The data was also plotted against the dimensionless speed of rotation, i.e. the product of the screw speed and the average residence time within the mixing section. This brings the abscissa ranges for mixers with different conveying capacity closer together, and differences in mixing efficiency between the tested configurations can be better interpreted. The energetic efficiency of the mixers investigated is compared by applying the concept of specific action. This helps to decide which mixer geometry and operating conditions produce a given homogeneity with the lowest amount of work done by viscous forces. [source] |
