Selected AbstractsFlood Disasters and Agricultural Wages in BangladeshDEVELOPMENT AND CHANGE, Issue 4 2007Lopamudra Banerjee ABSTRACT This article examines the effects of abnormal floods on agricultural wages in Bangladesh. Drawing upon the district-wise monthly real wage data for the period 1979,2000, it shows that wages decline sharply in the regions that are severely inundated for a long period of time. Wages may remain depressed in these regions even in the post-flood months. However, wages increase in the flood months in the regions that remain submerged for short durations. The article examines the district-wise crop yield data to explain these results in terms of the impact of flood on agricultural productivity, and therefore the demand for labour. [source] Comparison of missing value imputation methods for crop yield dataENVIRONMETRICS, Issue 4 2006Ravindra S. Lokupitiya Abstract Most ecological data sets contain missing values, a fact which can cause problems in the analysis and limit the utility of resulting inference. However, ecological data also tend to be spatially correlated, which can aid in estimating and imputing missing values. We compared four existing methods of estimating missing values: regression, kernel smoothing, universal kriging, and multiple imputation. Data on crop yields from the National Agricultural Statistical Survey (NASS) and the Census of Agriculture (Ag Census) were the basis for our analysis. Our goal was to find the best method to impute missing values in the NASS datasets. For this comparison, we selected the NASS data for barley crop yield in 1997 as our reference dataset. We found in this case that multiple imputation and regression were superior to methods based on spatial correlation. Universal kriging was found to be the third best method. Kernel smoothing seemed to perform very poorly. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source] Income Insurance in European AgricultureEUROCHOICES, Issue 1 2003Miranda P. M. Meuwissen Summary Income Insurance in EuropeanAgriculture The agricultural risk environment in Europe is changing, for example because of WTO agreements and governments increasingly withdrawing from disaster assistance in case of catastrophic events. In this context, some form of income insurance may be a useful risk management tool for farmers. Insuring farmers' incomes, however, is rather problematical for reasons of asymmetric information and high correlation of the risks amongst the would-be insured, for example risks due to price fluctuations, floods, droughts and livestock epidemics. It is concluded that the most aggregated forms of income insurance that are likely to be feasible include revenue insurance for field crops, especially if there are relevant futures markets and area yield data, and business interruption insurance for livestock commodities. In Europe, only a few such schemes currendy exist; some are purely private, others are subsidised. A somewhat larger involvement of the public sector, for example through public-private partnerships for reinsurance, could extend the availability of income insurance schemes throughout Europe. Governments, however, should tread warily in entering the field of subsidised agricultural insurance, which experience shows is beset with pitfalls. Pilot tests are useful in establishing the attractiveness of income insurance schemes and other income stabilising tools for the various parties involved. George Abstract To assess the biological implications of ozone depletion over the Antarctic Peninsula, the ultraviolet (UV) regime of two Antarctic cyanobacterial communities (composed of Leptolyngbya sp. and Phormidium sp.) was manipulated using screens that cut out UV radiation and a lamp which enhanced the dose of UV-B radiation (280,315 nm). The biological response of the cyanobacterial mats was monitored by measurement of chlorophyll fluorescence and pigment concentrations. The Leptolyngbya mat showed significant photochemical inhibition due to increased UV-B relative to photosynthetically active radiation (400,700 nm). The effect of UV on the Phormidium mat was less pronounced and dependent on the method of analysis: significantly lower photochemical yields were observed in UV-enhanced Phormidium mats compared to UV-excluded treatment, but if the yield data relative to the time zero control were considered then no effect of UV enhancement was observed. The Phormidium mat contained over 25 times the absolute concentration of UV-protecting mycosporine-like amino acid (MAA) and double the concentration of carotenoids compared to the Leptolyngbya mat, but the latter contained a higher ratio of carotenoids+MAAs to chlorophyll. There were no significant treatment-related changes in the concentrations of MAA, carotenoids and chlorophyll a in the Phormidium mat. The Leptolyngbya mat showed significantly lower chlorophyll a concentrations under UV enhancement, which could account for the lower photochemical yield in this sample. Our results show that different cyanobacterial species have differing photochemical sensitivity to UV-B radiation, which may confer a subtle advantage to the UV-B tolerant species over the less tolerant type during a period of high UV-B irradiance. [source] Tectonic control of erosion and sedimentation in the Amazon Basin of BoliviaHYDROLOGICAL PROCESSES, Issue 22 2009Patrice Baby Abstract The western Amazon drainage basin, which extends from southern Colombia to northern Bolivia, comprises the Cordillera Oriental of the Andes and its adjacent foreland basin system. In northern Bolivia, the orogenic wedge of the eastern Andes is very large, and its forward propagation controls the morphology of the Madeira drainage basin. We consider here the erosion and sedimentation mass balance in this part of the Amazon Basin, estimated on the basis of recent sediment yield data, within the current tectonic and geomorphic framework. The total suspended sediment (TSS) flux exported from the present orogenic wedge of northern Bolivia has been estimated at 500,600 million t year,1. More than 50% of the total sediment load crossing the Madeira foreland basin system is deposited. The rest of the sediments (less than 46%) reaches the eastern Amazon Basin, bypassing the Brazilian craton to the north. The average mass of sediment that has been deposited from the late Miocene to the present in the Madeira foreland basin sedimentation system is less than that intercepted today, by a factor of about 2·4. These results can be interpreted as an increase in Bolivian foreland basin flexural subsidence over time, associated with crust thickening and orogenic loading, and accentuated by the growing mass of retained sediments. They are consistent with the uplift rates of the Cordillera Oriental, obtained from fission-track dating, which began increasing significantly around 10,15 Ma. Petersburg O K -edge and Co L -edge near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure has been used to examine the cathode of an intact solid-state lithium ion battery. The novel technique allowed for the simultaneous acquisition of partial electron yield and fluorescence yield data during the first charge cycle of a LiCoO2 -based battery below the intercalation voltage. The chemical environments of oxygen and cobalt at the surface are shown to differ chemically from those in the bulk. The present design enables a wide variety of in situ spectroscopies, microscopies and scattering techniques. [source] Specimen charging in X-ray absorption spectroscopy: correction of total electron yield data from stabilized zirconia in the energy range 250,915,eVJOURNAL OF SYNCHROTRON RADIATION, Issue 2 2005Dimitrios Vlachos The effects of specimen charging on X-ray absorption spectroscopy using total electron yield have been investigated using powder samples of zirconia stabilized by a range of oxides. The stabilized zirconia powder was mixed with graphite to minimize the charging but significant modifications of the intensities of features in the X-ray absorption near-edge fine structure (XANES) still occurred. The time dependence of the charging was measured experimentally using a time scan, and an algorithm was developed to use this measured time dependence to correct the effects of the charging. The algorithm assumes that the system approaches the equilibrium state by an exponential decay. The corrected XANES show improved agreement with the electron energy-loss near-edge fine structure obtained from the same samples. [source] The Bayesian choice of crop variety and fertilizer doseJOURNAL OF THE ROYAL STATISTICAL SOCIETY: SERIES C (APPLIED STATISTICS), Issue 1 2002Chris M Theobald Recent contributions to the theory of optimizing fertilizer doses in agricultural crop production have introduced Bayesian ideas to incorporate information on crop yield from several environments and on soil nutrients from a soil test, but they have not used a fully Bayesian formulation. We present such a formulation and demonstrate how the resulting Bayes decision procedure can be evaluated in practice by using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods. The approach incorporates expert knowledge of the crop and of regional and local soil conditions and allows a choice of crop variety as well as of fertilizer level. Alternative dose, response functions are expressed in terms of a common interpretable set of parameters to facilitate model comparisons and the specification of prior distributions. The approach is illustrated with a set of yield data from spring barley nitrogen, response trials and is found to be robust to changes in the dose, response function and the prior distribution for indigenous soil nitrogen. [source] An Examination of Affine Term Structure Models,ASIA-PACIFIC JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL STUDIES, Issue 4 2009Suk-Joon Byun Abstract This paper examines the relative performance of models in the affine term structure family which includes both complete and essential affine models using Korean government bond yield data. Principal component analysis with Korean government bond yield data shows that the first three components of yields explain 97% of the total yield curve variation, and the components can be characterized as "level", "slope", and "curvature." We also estimate all three-factor affine models using a Kalman filter/quasi maximum likelihood (QML) approach. An exhaustive comparison shows that the three-factor essential affine model, A1 (3) E, in which only one factor affects the instantaneous volatility of short rates but all three factors affect the price of risk, appears to be the best model in Korea. This finding is consistent with results in Dai and Singleton (2002) and Duffee (2002) on US data and in Tang and Xia (2007) on Canadian, German, Japanese, UK and US data. [source] Spatial Yield Risk Across Region, Crop and Aggregation MethodCANADIAN JOURNAL OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS, Issue 2-3 2005Michael Popp A researcher interested in crop yield risk analysis often has to contend with a lack of field- or farm-level data. While spatially aggregated yield data are often readily available from various agencies, aggregation distortions for farm-level analysis may exist. This paper addresses how much aggregation distortion might be expected and whether findings are robust across wheat, canola and flax grown in two central Canadian production regions, differing mainly by rainfall, frost-free growing days and soil type. Using Manitoba Crop Insurance Corporation data from 1980 to 1990, this research, regardless of crop or region analyzed, indicates that (i) spatial patterns in risk are absent; (ii) use of aggregate data overwhelmingly under-estimates field-level yield risk; and (iii) use of a relative risk measure compared to an absolute risk measure leads to slightly less aggregation distortion. Analysts interested in conducting farm-level analysis using aggregate data are offered a range of adjustment factors to adjust for potential bias.
