WORKFORCE COMPOSITION AND FIRM PRODUCTIVITY: EVIDENCE FROM TAIWAN

We study the relationship between workforce composition and firm productivity based on a new employee-employer-matched data set, using an array of workforce characteristics and three alternative measures of firm productivity. While firm age is not essential for the performance of firms, those of smaller size and those in the steel and transportation industries outperform others. Moreover, labor quality, particularly the middle-aged with higher education, contributes significantly to firms' productivity. Furthermore, economic incentives and market competition both play important roles in the performance of firms. Finally, there is an employer-size premium with larger firms paying higher wages and nonwage benefits. (JEL C33, D20, J30) [source]


Collective organisation in small- and medium-sized enterprises , an application of mobilisation theory

This article draws on mobilisation theory to explain the presence and absence of collective organisation in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The analysis is based upon case studies of 11 UK SMEs reflecting variation in respect of employment size, industry sector, workforce composition, ownership and product/service market characteristics. It suggests that recently introduced statutory trade union recognition legislation and increased formalisation within some larger SMEs may provide the conditions for unionisation, although the presence and role of ,key activists' with union histories is critical to the process of gaining recognition and sustaining organisation. The nature of social relations in micro and small firms, however, inhibits the articulation of injustice. This is not least because the framing of grievances is a high-risk strategy with a potential to shatter the informal social relationships upon which work is based, and this inhibits the identification of collective interests. Decades of Disillusion: Reappraising the ALP-ACTU Accord 1983,1996

In this article we review the Accord between the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU), in order to address current uncertainty over the role of unions in politics, particularly in the face of both the Coalition Government's 2006 industrial relations legislation and the ALP's apparent repudiation of the country's longstanding institutional leverage over wages and non-wage policies. The Accord exemplified an explicitly corporatist union strategy and it initially attracted extensive and hostile commentary. However, discussion of the experiment, together with other tripartite approaches to policy formation, has waned in recent years, perhaps suggesting that it was a tactic whose time has passed. Reviewing some major criticisms, we argue that critics have dismissed the Accord too hastily. Although serious problems with the Accord process are acknowledged, the articulation of a broad program of social democratic initiatives is always likely to retain support on the political left. Despite changes in union density and workforce composition, the union movement still possesses capacity to mobilise community support and develop a principled program. [source]
