Selected AbstractsWinter survival and oviposition before and after overwintering of a parasitoid wasp, Ooencyrtus nezarae Ishii (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae)ENTOMOLOGICAL SCIENCE, Issue 2 2004Takeshi TERAOKA Abstract Winter survival and oviposition before and after overwintering in Ooencyrtus nezarae, an egg parasitoid of phytophagous heteropterans, were examined in Osaka, Japan. Eggs of Riptortus clavatus parasitized by O. nezarae were kept under natural photoperiod and temperature. When honey was supplied, some female adults emerging from early September to late November overwintered. The percentage of overwintering individuals increased as the date of adult emergence advanced. Most female adults supplied with honey and hosts oviposited soon after emergence, then stopped laying eggs. Female adults emerging in mid-October and early November laid eggs and then overwintered. The induction of diapause in the field seems to vary greatly depending on host availability. Without honey, the survival time of female adults was very short, whether host eggs were supplied or not. After overwintering, most females began to lay eggs in early May if host eggs were supplied, and they produced both male and female progeny. In the study area, a legume field in Osaka, parasitization by O. nezarae was observed from early July to November. Elgersma Abstract The aim was to study the effects of white clover cultivar and combinations with perennial ryegrass cultivars on seedling establishment in autumn-sown swards and on winter survival of seedlings. Large-leaved white clover cv. Alice and small-leaved white clover cv. Gwenda, and an erect and a prostrate perennial ryegrass cultivar were sown in autumn in pure stands and as four binary grass-clover mixtures. Mixtures of white clover cv. Huia and Aberherald with perennial ryegrass were also sown. Companion grasses had no significant impact on the establishment of white clover. The number of seedlings of white clover cv. Alice in mixtures (335 m,2) was higher than cv. Gwenda (183 m,2) and pure swards had similar white clover population densities as mixed swards. White clover cv. Huia tended to have more seedlings than Aberherald (355 and 205 m,2 respectively). No stolons were produced prior to a severe winter, because of the late sowing date. Winter survival of clover seedlings was 0·56 in mixtures and 0·69 in pure stands, irrespective of white clover or companion grass cultivar. Stolon development of white clover in autumn is often considered essential for overwintering survival and spring growth. In this study, there was considerable survival of the non-stoloniferous tap-rooted seedlings of all four clover cultivars despite a severe winter. Effects on survival and movements should be studied simultaneously since survival rates may be underestimated if emigrants are not considered, and since emigrants may experience reduced survival. 2We analysed movements and survival of adult wintering oystercatcher Haematopus ostralegus in response to the 1986,1987 partial closure of the Oosterschelde in the Dutch Delta. This reduced by one-third the tidal area of this major European wintering area for waders. 3We developed a novel variant of a multistate capture,recapture model allowing simultaneous estimation of survival and movement between sites using a mixture of data (live recaptures and dead recoveries). We used a two-step process, first estimating movements between sites followed by site-specific survival rates. 4Most birds were faithful to their ringing site. Winter survival was negatively affected by winter severity and was lowest among birds changing wintering site (i.e. moving outside of the Oosterschelde). 5During mild winters, survival rates were very high, and similar to before the closure in both changed and unchanged sectors of the Oosterschelde. However, the combined effect of habitat loss with severe winters decreased the survival of birds from changed sectors and induced emigration. 6The coastal engineering project coincided with three severe winters and high food stock, making assessment of its effects difficult. However, the habitat loss seems to have had less impact on adult survival and movements than did winter severity. 7 Synthesis and applications. Human-induced habitat change may result in population decline through costly emigration or reduced survival or reproduction of individuals that stay. Long-term monitoring of marked individuals helps to understand how populations respond to environmental change, but site-specific survival and movement rates should be integrated in the same model in order to maximize the information yield. Our modelling approach facilitates this because it allows the inclusion of recoveries from outside the study area. Leann KandaArticle first published online: 27 SEP 200 While climatic limitations are widely recognized as primary factors determining the distributions of many species, the physiological link between climate and species' persistence is poorly understood. The Virginia opossum Didelphis virginiana is a species for which winter energetics have been evaluated and a northern geographical limit has been hypothesized. Expansion of opossum populations beyond this limit, however, suggests that a previous winter energetics model requires modification. I update this energetics model by incorporating random foraging success to estimate the probability of opossum survival under varying winter temperature regimes. Estimation of opossum "success" for winters in Amherst, Massachusetts, since 1926 showed that juvenile females, the key breeding component of the population, would survive at a rate high enough to maintain a stable population in only 4 of the 77 yr. The model correctly predicted the fate of 13 of 14 opossums monitored in the Amherst area during the winters of 2000,2003. The current energetics model does not correctly predict autumn weight gain, but it does accurately estimate opossum winter survival. However, the model predicts that opossums should be winter-limited in areas such as Amherst, Massachusetts, where in fact they are well established. This discrepancy may be explained in three ways: weather station data do not adequately reflect available microclimates, opossums show high levels of flexibility in cold-weather foraging behavior, and most likely, humans provide food and shelter that mitigate the effect of winter. [source] Effects of fungicides on thyroid function, metabolism, and thermoregulation in cotton rats,ENVIRONMENTAL TOXICOLOGY & CHEMISTRY, Issue 8 2001Thomas E. Tomasi Abstract Among the myriad of recent studies on endocrine-disrupting chemicals, relatively few involve thyroid disruption, and most of these address exposure/disruption during embryonic life. Of those involving adult vertebrates, the endpoints examined are thyroid measurements. Even though thyroid disruption could potentially interfere with energy metabolism and thermoregulation such that over-winter survival might be compromised, the possible energetic consequences of these thyroid perturbations have not been investigated. We assessed thyroid function and measured resting metabolic rates of cotton rats chronically exposed to the fungicides vinclozolin or mancozeb. In addition, we measured norepinephrine-induced nonshivering thermogenesis and cold-induced thermogenesis and then cold-acclimated the mancozeb animals. Although thyroid hormone concentrations generally decreased, this was compensated for by an increase in thyroxine turnover (vinclozolin study only) such that thyroxine utilization rate was not different. In addition, there was no difference between the treated and control animals in any of the metabolic parameters measured. It is concluded that wild rodents exposed to these compounds are not energetically compromised. [source] The effect of stocking size on the first winter survival of whitefish, Coregonus lavaretus (L.), in the Gulf of Bothnia, Baltic SeaFISHERIES MANAGEMENT & ECOLOGY, Issue 2 2002E. JOKIKOKKO The anadromous whitefish, Coregonus lavaretus (L.), is the most numerous fish species stocked in the Gulf of Bothnia, Baltic Sea. One-summer-old-whitefish fingerlings are mostly 8,10 cm long when released annually in September,October, whereas the wild whitefish are 10,12 cm at that time. About 6 million, one-summer-old, spray-marked, whitefish were released in the northern and central parts of the Gulf in 1995,1998. To study the effect of the stocking length on the survival of the marked fish, the length of the recaptured whitefish as 1-year-olds was back-calculated. Altogether 1106 whitefish recaptured in the Gulf of Bothnia were analysed. The back-calculated length was slightly greater than the stocking length but not as large as the length of the wild fish. In the central part of the Gulf of Bothnia, where the mean stocking length was more than 10 cm, the back-calculated length was 10.5,11.1 cm. In the northern part of the Gulf the mean stocking length varied between 8.8 and 10.0 cm annually, and the corresponding back-calculated mean lengths were 9.3,9.7 cm. It also seemed that bigger fingerlings started their feeding migration earlier or they migrated faster than the smaller ones to the southern parts of the Gulf of Bothnia. Carlson Summary 1,For organisms inhabiting strongly seasonal environments, over-winter mortality is thought to be severe and size-dependent, with larger individuals presumed to survive at a higher rate than smaller conspecifics. Despite the intuitive appeal and prevalence of these ideas in the literature, few studies have formally tested these hypotheses. 2We here tested the support for these two hypotheses in stream-dwelling salmonids. In particular, we combined an empirical study in which we tracked the fate of individually-marked brown trout across multiple seasons and multiple years with a literature review in which we compiled the results of all previous pertinent research in stream-dwelling salmonids. 3We report that over-winter mortality does not consistently exceed mortality during other seasons. This result emerged from both our own research as well as our review of previous research focusing on whether winter survival is lower than survival during other seasons. 4We also report that bigger is not always better in terms of survival. Indeed, bigger is often worse. Again, this result emerged from both our own empirical work as well as the compilation of previous research focusing on the relationship between size and survival. 5We suggest that these results are not entirely unexpected because self-sustaining populations are presumably adapted to the predictable seasonal variation in environmental conditions that they experience. [source] Declining winter survival and fitness implications associated with latitudinal distribution in Norwegian Greylag Geese Anser anserIBIS, Issue 1 2006PIERRE A. PISTORIUS The Norwegian Greylag Goose Anser anser population has been increasing steadily over the past few decades, causing increasing nuisance in terms of agricultural crop damage. This, in combination with the importance of Greylags as a hunting target, has called for demographic estimates for the population to assist in management decisions. To this end, we analysed long-term mark,recapture data using Cormack,Jolly-Seber models embedded in program MARK to obtain survival estimates for the population. No sex-specific difference, or age effect on survival after juveniles had completed their first migration (3 months of age), was evident. Mean first-year survival was reported as 0.485 and annual survival of older birds as 0.700. On a monthly basis, survival in Greylags during summer and winter was very similar over the study period. A significant linear decline in winter survival from 0.909 to 0.807 was, however, apparent during the study period. Over the second half of the study (1994,2002), summer survival was about 3% lower than in the first half (1986,94) but no linear relationship was evident. We found a significant inverse relationship between Greylag survival during summer and latitudinal distribution in Norway. A similar relationship was evident between survival and annual bag numbers. The changes in adult survival observed in this study are likely to have had a substantial impact on the growth rate of the Norwegian Greylag population. [source] Population dynamics of the pipistrelle bat: effects of sex, age and winter weather on seasonal survivalJOURNAL OF ANIMAL ECOLOGY, Issue 2 2003Thomas Sendor Summary 1Life-history theory assumes increased mortality at certain stages such as hibernation. However, seasonal variation of survival rates of hibernating mammals has rarely been estimated. In this study, apparent survival of pipistrelle bats (Pipistrellus pipistrellus) hibernating and performing summer swarming at a large hibernaculum (Marburg Castle, Hesse, Germany), was modelled using seasonal (summer/winter) capture,recapture data for the years 1996,2000. The spring survival interval includes the period of arousal at the end of hibernation and therefore validly measures survival associated with hibernation. 2In five summers and four winters, 15 839 bats were captured and released (13 082 individuals) and 3403 recaptures recorded. Analysis was complicated by transience and trap-dependence. Recapture rates varied seasonally and by group. The autumnal survival estimates were negatively biased due to transience effects that could not be taken into account. 3Survival could be modelled using two age-classes, with reduced first-year juvenile survival. The age effect persisted over the first autumn and spring. There was virtually no evidence for sex-specific survival rates; male and female survival were found to be almost equal. In the best-fitting models, survival rates varied over time and differed among sexes and age-classes by a constant amount. Between years, there was only a small variation in spring survival, which could not be explained by winter severity. 4Adult spring survival was surprisingly high, averaging 0·892 (= 0·028). No evidence for increased mortality during hibernation could be found. This contradicted the expectation of reduced over-winter survival due to depleted fat reserves at the end of hibernation. Thus, hibernation does apparently not entail a survival cost for the pipistrelle bat. Rough estimates of annual adult survival averaged 0·799 ( = 0·051), which considerably exceeds previous estimates; annual juvenile survival was estimated at 0·527 ( = 0·095). Hence, previous studies have substantially underestimated pipistrelle bat survival. Possible consequences of these findings for various aspects of life histories are discussed. [source] A fixed energetic ceiling to parental effort in the great tit?JOURNAL OF ANIMAL ECOLOGY, Issue 2 2000J. M. Tinbergen Summary 1.,To elucidate the links between avian brood size, parental effort and parental investment, we measured daily energy expenditure (DEEfem), condition (residuals of mass on tarsus) and feeding rate in female great tits Parus major L. rearing broods in which the number of young was either reduced, unmanipulated or enlarged. 2.,Female condition was negatively correlated with manipulation when measured at the nestling age of 8 days (measured during the day), which suggests a shift in allocation from self-feeding to chick-feeding. However, there was no detectable manipulation effect on condition measured at the nestling age of 12 days (measured during the night). Either female condition was only affected by manipulation in the early nestling phase or the females adjusted their diurnal mass trajectory in response to brood size manipulation. More detailed data are required to verify this point. There were no indications of a fitness cost associated with the condition during the day, but condition at night was positively related to winter survival. Since manipulation only affected condition during the day, there was no link between manipulation and winter survival. 3.,The duration of the working day was not affected by manipulation and female feeding rate tended to flatten off with manipulated brood size. Similarly, brood reduction resulted in a lower DEEfem, whilst brood enlargement had no effect. This suggests that females worked at an energetic ceiling when rearing an unmanipulated brood. However, the level of this ,ceiling' in DEEfem was not fixed: it differed between years. This leads us to conclude that the observed ceiling was imposed by extrinsic factors (e.g. available foraging time) and not by an intrinsic factor such as maximum energy assimilation rate. We hypothesize that time limitation was the cause for the observed ceiling in energy expenditure and that the annual variation in the level of this ceiling was due to annual variation in ambient temperature. 4.,A cost of reproduction was previously demonstrated in this population: brood enlargement caused a reduction in the incidence of second clutches. However, since DEEfem did not differ between control and enlarged broods, we judge it unlikely that daily energy expenditure is a general predictor for parental investment. [source] Impacts of sudden winter habitat loss on the body condition and survival of redshank Tringa totanusJOURNAL OF APPLIED ECOLOGY, Issue 3 2006NIALL H. K. BURTON Summary 1Recent theoretical modelling has provided important insights into how habitat loss may affect local populations through impacts on individual fitness (survival, body condition, fecundity). Despite this, attempts to provide empirical evidence of such impacts on displaced individuals have been limited. Using a before-after-control-impact (BACI) approach, we report how a sudden loss of wintering habitat impacted on the body condition and survival of redshank Tringa totanus. 2The intertidal mudflats of Cardiff Bay, UK, were inundated with freshwater in November 1999 following impoundment by a barrage, resulting in the displacement of c. 300 redshank to adjacent habitat on the Severn Estuary. Movements and the survival of these birds were monitored through observations of colour-marked individuals. Comparative survival rates were calculated for marked populations at the main recipient site, Rhymney, and a control site. 3Displaced redshank had difficulty maintaining their mass in the first winter post-barrage closure: adults previously only recorded at Cardiff Bay were significantly lighter than those previously recorded at Rhymney. 4Survival rates of displaced redshank also declined. The estimated annual survival of adult Cardiff Bay redshank fell from 0·846 in the 2 years pre-barrage closure to 0·778 in the 3 following years because of a significant decline in winter survival (P = 0·0006). In comparison, there was no significant change in the survival of adult Rhymney redshank, and adult survival at the control site was actually greater post-barrage closure than beforehand. The lack of decline in these rates and the similarity between those of Cardiff Bay adults pre-barrage closure and Rhymney adults indicate that the increase in winter mortality of Cardiff Bay birds resulted from their displacement. 5Synthesis and applications. This study provides the first conclusive empirical evidence that habitat loss can impact individual fitness in a bird population. Adult redshank displaced from Cardiff Bay experienced poor body condition and a 44% increase in mortality rate. Without an increase in the recruitment of first-winter birds, such a change is likely to reduce substantially local population size. The results reported here should help to inform governments, planners and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) seeking to understand how developments might impact on animal populations. [source] Long-range call use in dominance-structured Crested Tit Parus cristatus winter groupsJOURNAL OF AVIAN BIOLOGY, Issue 1 2000Indri?is Krams In this study on free-ranging Crested Tits Parus cristatus, I examine the relationship between social dominance and the frequency of use of long-range communication calls. Calling rates of trills were highest among socially dominant individuals and they gave more calls when close to the boundary of their territories. Dominant females uttered fewer calls than their mates. However, they gave significantly more calls than subordinate males and subordinate females, the latter calling least. A removal and playback experiment revealed a relationship between the utterance of trilled calls and the defence of the winter territory in the Crested Tit. Although territorial vocalizations could incur costs, territorial individuals may gain from improved winter survival by decreasing the risk of food stealing by Crested Tits from adjacent territories. [source] Being high is better: effects of elevation and habitat on arctic ground squirrel demographyOIKOS, Issue 2 2005Elizabeth A. Gillis We investigated the effect of local environment on the demography and population dynamics of arctic ground squirrels (Spermophilus parryii plesius) by comparing reproduction, survival, and population trends of squirrels living in low elevation boreal forest and high elevation alpine tundra sites in southwestern Yukon Territory, Canada. Contrary to the trend for most birds and mammals, reproduction was significantly lower at the lower elevation and females living at higher elevation did not delay the age at which they first reproduced. Even though survival in the boreal forest was lower in summer than in the alpine, it was higher over winter so annual adult female survival was similar between sites. Sensitivity analysis of model parameters revealed that in the forest, population growth rate (,) was most sensitive to small changes in adult active season survival whereas for the alpine population, , was most sensitive to changes in juvenile winter survival. In their respective habitats, these parameters also showed high year to year variation and thus contributed greatly to the population trends observed. Even though ground squirrels persisted in the boreal forest, the measured demographic rates indicate the forest was sink habitat (,<1) and may have relied on nearby grassy meadows for immigrants. In contrast, the alpine habitat maintained a ground squirrel population in the absence of immigration (,=1). The variation in demographic rates between ground squirrels living at high and low elevation may arise from phenotypic responses of squirrels to different habitat structure. Arctic ground squirrels rely on sight to detect predators from a safe distance, and the boreal forest, with its lower visibility and higher predator density, appears to be suboptimal habitat. [source] Variation of freezing tolerance, Cor/Lea gene expression and vernalization requirement in Japanese common wheatPLANT BREEDING, Issue 5 2007M. Ishibashi Abstract Freezing tolerance and vernalization requirement are important traits for adaptation of wheat to growing in a high-latitude area. Fr-1 and Vrn-1, tightly linked on homoeologous group 5 chromosomes, are major loci for controlling the freezing tolerance and vernalization requirement, respectively. It was previously supposed that winter-habit wheat should possess a winter-type Fr-1 allele guaranteeing winter survival, but that such allele is unnecessary for spring-habit cultivars. To clarify such allelic linkage between the Vrn-1 and Fr-1 loci in the D genome, we studied freezing tolerance and vernalization requirement, and compared cold-responsive expression patterns of Cor (cold responsive)/Lea (late-embryogenesis-abundant), their putative transcription factor genes and three Vrn-1 homoeologs in Japanese common wheat cultivars. Wide variation of freezing tolerance and two alleles of Vrn-D1 were observed in the Japanese cultivars, whereas the accumulation levels of the Cor/Lea transcripts were not be correlated with the levels of freezing tolerance. The allelic linkage between Vrn-1 and Fr-1 loci well known in the A genome was not observed in the D genome of Japanese cultivars possessing Vrn-D1 or vrn-D1 allele. [source] |
