The aims were (i) to assess tree-ring growth patterns at different spatial-temporal scales; (ii) to identify the climate parameters that explain most of the variability in radial growth at different time domains; and (iii) to study past and current trends in radial growth and climate,growth relationships at different locations. 2High- and low-frequency stone pine chronologies were compiled for 30 treeline sites on the French and Italian Alps. We used gridded climate data computed from 200 years of instrumental records from an extensive Alpine network. Climate,growth relationships were computed with bootstrap correlation functions and their stationarity and consistency over time assessed with moving correlation. 3No spatial patterns were detected in stone pine chronology statistics despite the regional clustering observed in tree-ring series and climate responses. This can be attributed to (i) local weather variability; (ii) different biophysical conditions caused by soil moisture, solar radiation, snowmelt dynamics and growing season length; and (iii) forest stand history and age structure, the expression of long-term land use and disturbances. 4The exceptionally long-term climate records allowed significant stone pine growth response changes to be assessed at both annual and decadal time scales. Winter conditions and spring,summer temperatures mainly affected the growing season length, in addition to site carbon and water balance. Most of these limiting factors varied spatially and temporally along the latitudinal and longitudinal gradients in response to the corresponding changes in local conditions. 5Our results show evidence of a clear response variability of Pinus cembra to climate limiting factors, at both spatial and temporal scale. Such knowledge extended to other species and regions will provide better estimates of the effect of climate variability on species distribution and dynamics within global change scenarios and more accurate past climate reconstruction and forest ecosystem modelling. [source] Swimming activity of seabass: comparing patterns obtained in natural environment and in re-circulating tanks under high densityJOURNAL OF FISH BIOLOGY, Issue 2004M.-L. Bégout Anras Seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) swimming activity was compared between natural environments and aquaculture facilities. Behaviour under natural conditions was assessed in a saltmarsh pond (250 m2, 18 × 14 × 0·8 m) using acoustic telemetry. From several surveys, we documented the diel activity rhythm and demonstrated group effects on swimming patterns and amplitudes by comparing activity of solitary fish with that of a fish living in a group of 60. Consequences of weather variability were also analysed and revealed a high sensitivity of fish to atmospheric conditions for both swimming and demand-feeding behaviour. Behaviour in fish tanks was also studied using acoustic telemetry, as part of the EUREKA EU1 960 ,Aqua-Maki 2' project investigating aspects of fish culture in re-circulating tanks under high density. A re-circulating hexagonal tank (5·4 × 5·4 m, 1·8 m depth, 48 m3) was equipped with positioning and demand-feeding systems, oxygen and temperature probes. Initial density was 50 kg m3 in March and rose to 90 kg m3 at the end of the experiment in May. During this period, the movements of nine fish were continuously recorded for 24 h each, reaching a total of six 24 h episode at eight days interval. Swimming activity was analysed in terms of activity rhythms and space occupation specially around feeding events. The two data set and main results will be presented and compared to assess seabass behavioural plasticity and sensitivity to husbandry conditions. [source] ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS INFLUENCING THE DISTRIBUTION OF SOUTHERN RIGHT WHALES (EUBALAENA AUSTRALIS) ON THE SOUTH COAST OF SOUTH AFRICA II: WITHIN BAY DISTRIBUTIONMARINE MAMMAL SCIENCE, Issue 3 2004Simon H. Elwen Abstract Environmental factors are thought to strongly influence the distribution and predictability of the coastal distribution of southern right whales (Eubalaena australis) off South Africa. Preferred habitat had generally shallow sloping sedimentary floors and was characteristically protected from open ocean swell and prevalent seasonal winds. This study investigated whether habitat choices at smaller scales (within bays) were similar. Fine scale distribution patterns (GPS) from three years' surveys (1997, 1999, 2000) were analyzed separately within the three main concentration areas St Sebastian Bay, De Hoop, and Walker Bay (containing ,73% of cow-calf pairs and ,49% of unaccompanied adults in the whole survey region). Whale density at this scale of within particular bays did not correlate well with predicted variables, but Chi-squared analysis strongly supported results at broader scales, in all bays. Post-hoc"choice" tests between similar areas differing in only one variable revealed that cow-calves preferred (presumed) sandy substrates and especially protection from swell. The strength and predictability of preferences shown at fine scale (where individual movement and weather variability could have great influence) provide strong support for findings at larger scales and emphasize the importance of environmental factors in the habitat choice of wintering right whales. [source] Climate, size and flowering history determine flowering pattern of an orchidBOTANICAL JOURNAL OF THE LINNEAN SOCIETY, Issue 4 2006MARION PFEIFER The flowering pattern of plant species, including orchid species, may fluctuate irregularly. Several explanations are given in the literature to explain that pattern, including: costs associated with reproduction, herbivory effects, intrinsically triggered unpredictable variation of the system, and external conditions (i.e. weather). The influence of age is discussed, but is difficult to determine because relevant long-term field observations are generally absent in the literature. The influence of age, size, reproductive effort and climatic conditions on flowering variability of Himantoglossum hircinum are examined using data collected in a long-term project (1976,2001) in Germany. PCA and multiple regression analysis were used to analyse variability in flowering pattern over the years as a function of size and weather variability. We studied future size after flowering to quantify costs of reproduction. Flowering probability was strongly determined by plant size, while there was no significant influence of age class on flowering probability of the population. Costs associated with reproduction resulted in a decrease in plant size, causing reduced flowering probability of the plants in the following year. The weather explained about 50% of the yearly variation in the proportion of large plants and thus had an indirect, strong influence on the flowering percentage. We conclude that variability in flowering is caused mainly by the variability of weather conditions in the previous and current year, whereby reproductive effort causes further variability in flowering at the individual and, consequently, the population levels. © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2006, 151, 511,526.
