The Force of a Weak Field: Law and Lawyers in the Government of the European Union (For a Renewed Research Agenda)

Rather than considering legal and judicial arenas as the mere surface of the weighty social processes that shape European integration, this article contends that they are actually one of the essential spaces where the government of Europe is being produced. To account for this paramount role played by law in EU polity, two hitherto unexplored research paths are followed. First of all, a socio-historical perspective focuses on the critical junctures at which Law has been formalized as a science of European government providing critical devices for integration. Second, a more sociological stance is taken in relation to the functioning of the "European legal field" (ELF). A preliminary inquiry leads to its characterization as weak, with porous internal and external borders. This article argues that this weak autonomy is what makes it strong and influential when it comes to shaping the representations and principles of EU government. [source]


Weak-field thermal Hall conductivity of YBa2Cu3O6.99 at low temperature

Abstract We calculate the thermal Hall conductivity of YBa2Cu3O6.99 by using Kubo formula approach. The longitudinal thermal conductivity, Kxx,is calculated and then by the relation between Kxx and Kxy the thermal Hall conductivity is evaluated. Towards high-fidelity two-photon quantum communications

We propose two alternative scheme for highly efficient nonlinear interaction between weak optical fields. The first scheme is based on the attainment of electromagnetically induced transparency simultaneously for two fields via transitions between magnetically split F = 1 atomic sublevels, in the presence of two driving fields. The second scheme relies on simultaneous electromagnetically- and self-induced transparencies of the two fields. Thereby, equal slow group velocities and giant cross-phase modulation of the weak fields over long distances are achieved. [source]


Statistical theory of weak field thermoremanent magnetization in multidomain particle ensembles

SUMMARY A non-equilibrium statistical theory of multidomain thermoremanent magnetization (TRM) is developed, which describes thermal magnetization changes as continuous inhomogeneous Markov processes. The proposed theory relies on three very general physical properties of TRM: (a) The probability that a magnetization state Sj is transformed during an infinitesimal temperature change into state Si depends only on external conditions and on Sj, but not on previously assumed states. (b) Due to time inversion symmetry of the Maxwell equations, the magnetic energies are invariant with respect to inversion of all spins in zero field. (c) The probability that an energy barrier between two magnetization states is overcome during a thermal process is governed by Boltzmann statistics. From these properties, the linearity of TRM with field is derived for generic multidomain particle ensembles. The general validity of Thellier's law of additivity of partial TRM's in weak fields is established and a method for proving a large class of similar additivity laws is developed. The theory allows consistent treatment of blocking and unblocking of remanence in multidomain particle ensembles and naturally explains apparent differences between blocking and unblocking temperatures.
