Selected AbstractsIs the distribution of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria in the oceans related to temperature?ENVIRONMENTAL MICROBIOLOGY, Issue 7 2009Lucas J. Stal Summary Approximately 50% of the global natural fixation of nitrogen occurs in the oceans supporting a considerable part of the new primary production. Virtually all nitrogen fixation in the ocean occurs in the tropics and subtropics where the surface water temperature is 25°C or higher. It is attributed almost exclusively to cyanobacteria. This is remarkable firstly because diazotrophic cyanobacteria are found in other environments irrespective of temperature and secondly because primary production in temperate and cold oceans is generally limited by nitrogen. Cyanobacteria are oxygenic phototrophic organisms that evolved a variety of strategies protecting nitrogenase from oxygen inactivation. Free-living diazotrophic cyanobacteria in the ocean are of the non-heterocystous type, namely the filamentous Trichodesmium and the unicellular groups A,C. I will argue that warm water is a prerequisite for these diazotrophic organisms because of the low-oxygen solubility and high rates of respiration allowing the organism to maintain anoxic conditions in the nitrogen-fixing cell. Heterocystous cyanobacteria are abundant in freshwater and brackish environments in all climatic zones. The heterocyst cell envelope is a tuneable gas diffusion barrier that optimizes the influx of both oxygen and nitrogen, while maintaining anoxic conditions inside the cell. It is not known why heterocystous cyanobacteria are absent from the temperate and cold oceans and seas. [source] How internal waves influence the vertical distribution of zooplanktonFRESHWATER BIOLOGY, Issue 1 2007KARSTEN RINKE Summary 1. We present data with a high spatio-temporal resolution from a 72-h field survey in Bautzen Reservoir (Saxony, Germany). The aims of this survey were to observe hydrophysical processes during a period of unstable stratification in spring and investigate the effect of wind-induced internal waves on the vertical distribution of zooplankton. 2. Wind velocities up to 10 m s,1 caused a strong downwelling event of warm water at the sampling site and led to the generation of internal waves with an amplitude of 4 m. 3. The zooplankton community, which was dominated by Daphnia galeata, inhabited epilimnetic waters. Downwelling enlarged the thickness of the epilimnetic layer and, hence, led to high zooplankton abundances down to relatively deep water strata indicating lateral transport of zooplankton. As a consequence, area-specific zooplankton abundances increased considerably (max. fourfold) during downwelling. 4. We conclude that classical limnological field sampling, such as for monitoring purposes, can lead to severely biased estimates of zooplankton abundance due to the interfering effects of hydrophysical processes like internal waves. 5. Backscattering strengths measured by a simultaneously deployed Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (600 kHz) were found to be correlated with estimated zooplankton abundances based on plankton samples. [source] Global summer monsoon rainy seasonsINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF CLIMATOLOGY, Issue 12 2008Suping Zhang Abstract A concise and objective definition of monsoon rainy season characteristics is proposed for worldwide monsoon regions. The result highlights six major summer monsoon rainy season domains and the mean dates of the local onset, peak and withdrawal phases of the summer monsoon rainy season. The onset phases occur progressively later poleward in the continental domains but primarily eastward in the oceanic monsoon regions. The rainy season retreats equatorward over the continental and oceanic monsoon regions. The length of the rainy season decreases poleward and shorter rainy season can also be found over the outskirts of warm water. Some exceptions exist in terms of the characteristics of rainy season, e.g. the westward advance of rainy season over North Africa and an apparently prolonged rainy season in the Korean peninsula. The results here are basically compatible with those obtained in previous studies on regional monsoons. A definition of the seasonal wind overturning is proposed. Combining rainfall and winds, we stratify the global monsoon into strong and weak categories. The strong monsoons are typically in the regions with both concentration of summer rainfall and annual reversal of low-level winds, while the weak monsoon features only a contrasting wet,dry season. Seemingly, some mid-latitude regions with wind reversals are not monsoonal because of the reversals being opposite to the monsoon overturning and the rainfall patterns being more or less Mediterranean. The comparison between the monsoon domains derived from Climate Prediction Center (CPC) Merged Analysis of Precipitation (CMAP) and the 40-year European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Re-Analysis (ERA-40), the Japanese 25-year Reanalysis (JRA-25) and National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) datasets show good capabilities of the reanalyses in demarcation of the major monsoon rainy season domains in the tropics and subtropics. But the reanalyses are less realistic in the mid-latitudes of Eurasia and North America. The result here provides the simple yet objective definitions of monsoon domain, onset, peak and withdrawal which are useful for validation of GCMs. Copyright © 2008 Royal Meteorological Society [source] Optimal use of solar collectors for residential buildingsINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ENERGY RESEARCH, Issue 11 2001Stig-Inge GustafssonArticle first published online: 5 JUN 200 Abstract Solar radiation is an abundant free resource which may be used in the form of solar heated water. This is achieved in solar collectors which, unfortunately, are expensive devices and, further, the warm water must be stored in accumulators,items which also cost money. This paper shows how we have optimized the situation for a block-of-flats in Sweden. In order to find this point we have used the minimum life-cycle cost (LCC) concept as a criterion. The best solution is therefore found when that cost finds its lowest value. It is also examined under which conditions solar collectors are part of the optimal solution and further it is calculated what happens if this optimal point is abandoned, i.e. how much will the LCC increase if other than optimal solutions are chosen. LCC optimization for multi-family buildings almost always results in a heating system with low operating costs such as district heating or dual-fuel systems where a heat pump takes care of the base load and an oil boiler the peak. The installation cost must, however, be kept to a reasonable level. Expensive solar panel systems are therefore normally avoided if the lowest LCC shall be reached, at least for Swedish conditions. This is so even if the solar system has a very low operating cost. For buildings where the only alternative energy source is electricity, solar collectors seem to be on the rim of profitability, i.e. for an energy price of about 0.6 SEK kWh,1. [source] Peroxidase activity, chlorophylls and antioxidant profile of two leaf vegetables (Solanum nigrum L. and Amaranthus cruentus L.) under six pretreatment methods before cookingINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF FOOD SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY, Issue 1 2008Odunayo Clement Adebooye Summary The study evaluated the effects of six pretreatment methods before cooking on the peroxidase activity, chlorophyll and antioxidant profile of Amaranthus cruentus L. and Solanum nigrum L. The six pretreatments methods used were chopped only (raw sample) (coded M1); chopped and dried at 50 °C for 5 h (coded M2); chopped and squeezed in water (at room temperature) (coded M3); chopped and soaked in warm water (approximately 60 °C), then cooled and squeezed (coded M4); chopped and soaked in salt-treated water (approximately 20 g NaCl per litre of water) for 15 min, then squeezed (coded M5) and chopped and soaked in boiling water (100 °C), then cooled and squeezed (coded M6). The main effect of vegetable type and the main effect of pretreatment methods have significant effects (P 0.05) on the parameters measured, while the interaction of vegetable type and pretreatment methods have no significant effect on the parameters measured. Statistical analyses (P 0.05) showed that chlorophyll a and b occur in ratio 3:1 in the two vegetables, irrespective of the pretreatment imposed. Peroxidase activity test showed that A. cruentus, irrespective of the pretreatment imposed showed, no peroxidase activity, while S. nigrum showed high peroxidase activity for all the pretreatments except for M6. Results showed that there was a significantly (P 0.05) higher content of carotenoids in A. cruentus when compared with S. nigrum, while the total phenolics, total flavonoids and total tannins contents were higher in S. nigrum when compared with A. cruentus, irrespective of the pretreatment method used. For the two vegetables, the percentage losses in total carotenoids, phenolics, flavonoids and total tannins at M6 when compared with M1 were 53.3,60.5%, 55.6,57.1%, 62.4,63.6% and 66.1,73.5%, respectively. There was a sharp drop in the carotenoids, phenolics, flavonoids and tannins contents of the two vegetables at M4 and M6, with both treatments having closely similar values for each parameter. [source] Effects of temperature on larval fish swimming performance: the importance of physics to physiologyJOURNAL OF FISH BIOLOGY, Issue 4 2002I. Hunt von Herbing Temperature influences both the physiology offish larvae and the physics of the flow conditions under which they swim. For small larvae in low Reynolds number (Re) hydrodynamic environments dominated by frictional drag, temperature-induced changes in the physics of water flow have the greatest effect on swimming performance. For larger larvae, in higher Re environments, temperature-induced changes in physiology become more important as larvae swim faster and changes in swimming patterns and mechanics occur. Physiological rates at different temperatures have been quantified using Q10s with the assumption that temperature only affected physiological variables. Consequently, Q10s that did not consider temperature-induced changes in viscosity overestimated the effect of temperature on physiology by 58% and 56% in cold-water herring and cod larvae respectively. In contrast, in warm-water Danube bleak larvae, Q10s overestimated temperature-induced effects on physiology by only 5,7%. This may be because in warm water, temperature-induced changes affect viscosity to a smaller degree than in cold water. Temperature also affects muscle contractility and efficiency and at high swimming velocities, efficiency decreases more rapidly in cold-exposed than in warm-exposed muscle fibres. Further experiments are needed to determine whether temperature acts differently on swimming metabolism in different thermal environments. While hydrodynamic factors appear to be very important to larval fish swimming performance in cold water, they appear to lose importance in warm water where temperature effects on physiology dominate. This may suggest that major differences exist among locomotory capacities of larval fish that inhabit cold, temperate waters compared to those that live in warm tropical waters. It is possible that fish larvae may have developed strategies that affect dispersal and recruitment in different aquatic habitats in order to cope not only with temperature-induced physiological challenges, but physical challenges as well. [source] Effect of Sequential Treatment of Warm Water Dip and Low-dose Gamma Irradiation on the Quality of Fresh-cut Green OnionsJOURNAL OF FOOD SCIENCE, Issue 3 2005Hyun Jung Kim ABSTRACT: The effect of warm water dip in combination with irradiation on quality of fresh-cut green onions was studied. Fresh-cut green onions were treated with and without warm water (50°C for 20 s) and packaged prior to irradiation at 0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 kGy, then stored at 4°C for 14 d. Color, texture, decay percentage, electrolyte leakage, sensory qualities, and total aerobic count (TAC) were measured at 1,4,8, and 14 d of storage. The warm water treatment reduced the TAC by 0.9 log initially but the beneficial effect disappeared during storage. With the test conditions used in this study, the warm water treatment did not provide added benefits for quality improvements. Irradiation at all tested doses reduced TAC and the development of decay and off-odor, improved visual quality, and preserved green color. [source] Palliation in cancer of the oesophagus , what passes down an oesophageal stent?JOURNAL OF HUMAN NUTRITION & DIETETICS, Issue 5 2003A. Holdoway Introduction: Self-expanding metal stents are becoming an increasingly popular method of palliation of dysphagia in advanced oesophageal carcinoma. Approximately 10% require intervention post-placement because of blockage (Angorn, 1981). This could be prevented by effective dietary advice. We set out to write evidence-based dietary guidelines for patients undergoing oesophageal stent insertion. A comprehensive literature search failed to identify evidence to support the present guidelines used by manufacturers and dietitians on foods allowed or to avoid and the use of fizzy drinks to ,clean' the stent. Only reference on the ability to consume a semi-solid or solid diet was made (Nedin, 2002). We therefore tested the ability of 50 foods to pass through a stent and the efficacy of fizzy water in unblocking an occluded stent. Method: Normal mouthfuls of raw and cooked, peeled/unpeeled fruit and vegetables, casseroles, griddle or grilled plain meat, poultry or fish, eggs, nuts, dried fruit and bread in various forms were tested. An adult female chewed a ,normal' mouthful of each test food and at the point of swallowing the bolus of food was passed into an expanded Ultraflex metal covered stent (internal diameter 18 mm). If occlusion occurred, water was dribbled through the stent, simulating swallowing fluid, in an attempt to unblock the stent. If the occlusion remained, the stent was agitated to mimic advice given about moving around to unblock a stent in a patient. If it remained occluded, a smaller amount of food, approximately half a mouthful, was chewed for twice as long and re-tested. To test the efficacy of fizzy water to clear an occlusion, we compared the ability of water, warm water and fizzy water to unblock a stent artificially occluded with a bolus of bread. Results: Foods that occluded the stent but passed through if eaten in half mouthfuls and chewed for twice normal chewing time included sandwiches, dry toast, apple, tinned pineapple, fresh orange segments with pith removed, up to six sultanas, chopped dried apricot, boiled egg, muesli, meat and poultry. Dry meat, fruit with pith, skins of capsicum peppers and tomatoes, more than seven sultanas and dried apricots caused occlusion. Nuts and vegetables such as lettuce, which are cited in many diet sheets as items to avoid (Nedin, 2002), passed through the stent when chewed to a normal level. The volumes of fluid required to unblock a stent occluded with bread were 5 l of fizzy water, 3.5 l of cold water or 1 l of warm water. Conclusion: If a patient has good dentition and can chew well and take small mouthfuls and prepare and cook food appropriately, it is likely that they can enjoy a wide variety of solid foods. The use of fizzy drinks to maintain the patency of the stent in patients prone to reflux is questionable, warm fluids may be more efficacious. Based on these initial findings we are updating our dietary guidelines for patients undergoing oesophageal stent insertion and hope to audit stent occlusion following implementation. De Angelis Abstract Algae from cold water (Canada) and warm water (China) were analyzed for their total lipid content, and for their fatty acid (FA) composition and content. The major findings are that FA from Canadian algae are generally richer in polyunsaturated FA (PUFA), with a higher n-3/n-6 FA ratio, and a higher degree of total unsaturation. The 18 C, 4 double bonds FA (18 : 4 stearidonic acid, morotic acid as synonym) was detected in greater amounts in cold water samples. [source] Shape-Memory Stapes Prosthesis for Otosclerosis SurgeryTHE LARYNGOSCOPE, Issue 8 2005Glenn W. Knox MD Abstract Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of a shape-memory alloy, Nitinol, as a component of an improved stapes prosthesis. Study Design: Prospective laboratory and clinical study to develop a Nitinol stapes prosthesis. Methods: Various diameters of Nitinol wire and temperature transition variants were analyzed with regard to ease of deformation, response to heating, and strength. The size and geometry of the closed hook was determined by measurement of 50 incus cadaver bones. Several heat sources for activating the shape memory were evaluated, including electrocautery, lasers, and warm water. Trial surgeries were then performed on human temporal bones in the laboratory. The closure characteristics of the Nitinol loop were studied. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) testing at 1.5 Tesla was performed to determine safety during MRI studies. Preliminary human subject trials were then instituted. Results: In all cases, a low heat condition was ample to activate the shape memory characteristics of the hook and return it to a closed position after it had been opened. Laser power was generally set well below the power needed for removing bone. The Nitinol loop closed snugly around the incus with application to the top of the hook with a low temperature laser setting. Almost any heat source was effective. MRI testing at 1.5 Tesla showed no movement of the prosthesis. Preliminary results in human subjects showed excellent air-bone closure. The Nitinol loop holds uniform contact around the incus. Conclusions: The Nitinol piston greatly simplifies the stapedectomy procedure by taking the need for a hand operated instrument out of the surgeon's hands. Because of the nature of the Nitinol wire, it can never over-crimp. All these characteristics make the prosthesis advantageous for otosclerosis surgery. [source] Plasma concentration of anti-diuretic hormone and urine volume in response to intraruminal administration of acetate, propinata and butyrate in suckling calvesANIMAL SCIENCE JOURNAL, Issue 3 2009Tsunenori IRIKI ABSTRACT Acetate, propionate, and butyrate were intraruminally administered to dry feed-fed suckling calves to evaluate their effects on plasma ketone bodies, anti-diuretic hormone (ADH) concentrations, and urine volume. Four male Holstein calves (5,7 weeks old) were given 1.0 L of warm water or 0.5 mole of one of the acids in 1.0 L of warm water. A 4 × 4 Latin square design was adopted for the experiment. The acetate group showed significantly higher plasma acetate concentrations than the other three groups between 0.25 h and 2.0 h after administration (P < 0.01). Plasma glucose concentrations did not differ markedly among the groups. The butyrate group showed significantly higher plasma ketone body concentrations than the other three groups until the end of the experiment (P < 0.01). Plasma ADH concentrations quickly rose in the butyrate group and remained significantly higher than in the other three groups from 0.25 h to 2.5 h after administration (P < 0.05). In accordance with the elevation of plasma ADH levels, the butyrate group showed decreases in urine volume and increases in urine osmolarity (P < 0.05). Plasma osmolarity and hematocrit values (Ht) were not different among the groups. These results suggest that the administration of acetate and propionate had little effect on ADH secretion. [source] Effect of temperature and phytoplankton concentration on Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (L.) filtration rateAQUACULTURE RESEARCH, Issue 6 2003Hakan Turker Abstract Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (L.) held in timed-pulse feeding chambers, were provided with algal-rich water dominated by either green algae (Scenedesmus, Ankistrodesmus, Chlorella and Tetraedron) or cyanobacteria (Microcystis) to determine the effect of temperature and phytoplankton concentration on filtration rates. Green algae and cyanobacteria filtration rates were measured as suspended particulate organic carbon (POC) kg,1 wet fish weight h,1. Ivlev's filter-feeding model described the relationships between filtration rates and suspended POC concentration of green algae and cyanobacteria. Filtration rates of both green algae and cyanobacteria increased linearly as water temperature increased from 17 °C to 32 °C and were significantly higher in the warm-water regime (26,32 °C) than in the cool-water regime (17,23 °C). Filtration rates at 95% saturation POC (FR95) in green algal and cyanobacterial waters were 700 mg C kg,1 h,1 and 851 mg C kg,1 h,1 in the warm-water regime and 369 mg C kg,1 h,1 and 439 mg C kg,1 h,1 in the cool-water regime respectively. The FR95 in warm water were achieved at lower POC concentrations than in cool water. [source] Immersion in Water in the First Stage of Labor: A Randomized Controlled TrialBIRTH, Issue 2 2001Kerena Eckert RN Background:Current forms of analgesia often have significant side effects for women in labor. Bathing in warm water during labor has been reported to increase a woman's comfort level and cause a reduction in painful contractions. The objective of this trial was to compare immersion in warm water during labor with traditional pain management for a range of clinical and psychological outcomes.Methods:A prospective randomized controlled trial of 274 pregnant women, who were free from medical and obstetric complications and expecting a singleton pregnancy at term, was conducted at the Women's and Children's Hospital, a maternity tertiary referral center in Adelaide, South Australia. Women in labor were randomized to an experimental group who received immersion in a bath or to a nonbath group who received routine care. Pharmacological pain relief was the primary outcome that was measured, and secondary outcomes included maternal and neonatal clinical outcomes, factors relating to maternal and neonatal infectious morbidity, psychological outcomes, and satisfaction with care.Results:The use of pharmacological analgesia was similar for both the experimental and control groups; 85 and 77 percent, respectively, used major analgesia. No statistical differences were observed in the proportion of women requiring induction and augmentation of labor or in rates of perineal trauma, length of labor, mode of delivery, or frequency of cardiotocographic trace abnormalities. Neonatal outcomes (birthweight, Apgar score, nursery care, meconium-stained liquor, cord pH estimations) revealed no statistically significant differences. Infants of bath group women required significantly more resuscitation than routine group women. Routine group women rated their overall experience of childbirth more positively than bath group women. Psychological outcomes, such as satisfaction with care or postnatal distress, were the same for both groups.Conclusion:Bathing in labor confers no clear benefits for the laboring woman but may contribute to adverse effects in the neonate. Altomare Background: Stapled haemorrhoidectomy is gaining wide acceptance but there is still some concern about the risk of injury to the internal anal sphincter (IAS). IAS function and morphology, and anal canal sensitivity were studied prospectively in patients undergoing this operation. Methods: Twenty patients (11 women; mean age 43 years) with stage III haemorrhoids entered the study. All underwent preoperative anorectal manometry, rectoanal inhibitory reflex (RAIR) testing and three-dimensional transanal ultrasonography. A test of anal sensation was administered to evaluate ability to discriminate between air and warm water. All the investigations were repeated 6 months after the operation. Results: The mean(s.d.) maximal resting pressure was 87(30) mmHg before surgery and 81(20) mmHg afterwards (P not significant). The maximal squeeze pressure did not change after operation (178(43) versus 174(60) mmHg). The RAIR showed the same features in 19 of 20 patients before and 18 of 20 after operation. Three-dimensional ultrasonography demonstrated no changes in the width of the IAS (mean(s.d.) 2·1(4) mm before and 2·1(3) mm after surgery). The ability of the anal mucosa to discriminate air from warm water improved in five patients. Continence scores did not differ significantly after 6 months. Conclusion: Stapled haemorrhoidectomy does not affect the function and morphology of the IAS in the long term. The sensitivity of the anal canal can improve in patients with preoperative sensory impairment. © 2001 British Journal of Surgery Society Ltd [source] The impact of newborn bathing on the prevalence of neonatal hypothermia in Uganda: A randomized, controlled trialACTA PAEDIATRICA, Issue 10 2005Anna Bergström Abstract Aim: To elucidate the impact of bathing on the prevalence of hypothermia among newborn babies exposed to the skin-to-skin (STS) care technique before and after bathing. Methods: Non-asphyxiated newborns after vaginal delivery (n=249) in a Ugandan referral hospital were consecutively enrolled and randomized either to bathing at 60 min postpartum (n=126) or no bathing (n=123). All mothers practised skin-to-skin care of their newborns. Four rectal and tympanic registrations of newborn temperatures were carried out in both groups directly after drying at birth, and at 60, 70 and 90 min postpartum. Results: Bathing of newborns in the first hour after delivery resulted in a significantly increased prevalence of hypothermia, defined as temperature <36.5°C, at 70 and at 90 min postpartum despite the use of warmed water and the application of the STS method. There was no neonatal mortality. Aside from the bathing procedure, no background factor potentially predisposing the newborns to hypothermia was identified. Conclusion: Bathing newborn babies shortly after birth increased the risk of hypothermia despite the use of warm water and STS care for thermal protection of the newborn. [source] Cardiorespiratory effects of warm water immersion in elderly patients with chronic heart failureCLINICAL PHYSIOLOGY AND FUNCTIONAL IMAGING, Issue 6 2005Åsa Cider Summary Background:, Hydrotherapy might be included in the rehabilitation of patients with chronic heart failure (CHF), but little is known about the acute cardiorespiratory reaction in warm water. The aim of this study was to assess the acute cardiorespiratory effect of immersion in warm water, in a clinical setting, in elderly patients with CHF compared with healthy age and sex matched persons. Methods:, Twelve patients (three females) with CHF, NYHA II,III, age 64 ± 6 years, and 12 healthy subjects were studied. Cardiorespiratory changes, on land and in a temperature-controlled swimming pool (33,34°C) were assessed during rest and exercise, in a sitting position, using continuous gas analyses. Results:, There were no significant differences, land versus water, in carbon dioxide production, total ventilation, respiratory frequency, respiratory exchange ratio, heart rate or blood pressure in either of the groups. A significant difference was found in oxygen uptake, at rest, land versus water in patients with CHF in comparison with healthy subjects (,0·2 ± 0·4 versus +0·3 ± 0·6 ml kg,1 min,1, P<0·01). Oxygen kinetics (,) increased significantly (P = 0·01) in both groups during exercise in water. Conclusion:, Hydrotherapy was well tolerated and the vast majority of the cardiorespiratory responses, during warm water immersion in a clinical setting, are similar in patients with CHF compared with healthy subjects. However, further larger studies, are needed to better understand the physiological reactions during hydrotherapy. [source] Water temperature sampling by foraging Brünnich's Guillemots with bird-borne data loggersJOURNAL OF AVIAN BIOLOGY, Issue 2 2001Yutaka Watanuki (correspondence) We describe the features of waters where seabirds were feeding by sampling vertical water temperature profiles with data loggers mounted on five Brünnich's Guillemots in Svalbard, Norway. The guillemots foraged in a cold water (,0.5,0.5°C SST (sea surface temperature)) by making 1.8 dive bouts in short trips (32,257 min duration) as well as in moderate (0.5,2.0°C SST) and warm waters (2.5,4.0°C SST) by making 6.0 dive bouts during long trips (411,688 min duration). Judging from outbound flying time (15.7,24.4 min), time between dive bouts (23.9,43.3 min) and water types, the birds probably fed in fjord or coastal waters during short trips and in both coastal and offshore waters during long trips. Water temperature and diving behaviour can be simultaneously recorded by small data loggers, which therefore will provide useful information on marine features and foraging activity of top predators. Vaudo Fine-scale movements and site fidelity of round stingrays Urobatis halleri at Seal Beach California, U.S.A., were examined using acoustic telemetry. Actively tracked fish generally exhibited limited nearshore movement, with greater distances travelled at night when the tide was ebbing than during the day with ebbing tides. Increases in round stingray activity were associated with increases in ambient temperature. Passively tracked fish showed seasonal patterns in their presence at Seal Beach. Males left Seal Beach during the autumn, returned the following spring, and remained in the area until the following autumn. Females spent far less time at Seal Beach, remaining in the area for a few weeks during June and July. Passively tracked round stingrays were recorded more often in the warm waters of the San Gabriel River mouth (the location of a thermal outfall from an electric-generating station) than adjacent beaches, with fish often returning to Seal Beach after periods of absence. Anthropogenic effects resulting from coastal development may have created environmental conditions (i.e. warmer water and finer sediments) that influence the movements and site fidelity of round stingrays. [source] PHYLOGENETIC RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN THE GENUS HYPNEA (GIGARTINALES, RHODOPHYTA), WITH A DESCRIPTION OF H. CAESPITOSA SP.JOURNAL OF PHYCOLOGY, Issue 2 2010Species discrimination within the gigartinalean red algal genus Hypnea has been controversial. To help resolve the controversy and explore phylogeny within the genus, we determined rbcL sequences from 30 specimens of 23 species within the genus, cox1 from 22 specimens of 10 species, and psaA from 16 species. We describe H. caespitosa as a new species characterized by a relatively slender main axis; a pulvinate growth habit with entangled, anastomosing, and subulate uppermost branches; and unilaterally borne tetrasporangial sori. The new species occurs in the warm waters of Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore. The phylogenetic trees of rbcL, psaA, and cox1 sequences showed a distant relationship of H. caespitosa to H. pannosa J. Agardh from Baja California and the marked differentiation from other similar species. The rbcL + psaA tree supported monophyly of the genus with high bootstrap values and posterior probabilities. The analysis revealed three clades within the genus, corresponding to three sections, namely, Virgatae, Spinuligerae, and Pulvinatae first recognized by J. G. Agardh. Exceptions were H. japonica T. Tanaka in Pulvinatae and H. spinella (C. Agardh) Kütz. in Spinuligerae. [source] A warm thermal enclave in the Late Pleistocene of the South-eastern United StatesBIOLOGICAL REVIEWS, Issue 2 2009Dale A. Russell ABSTRACT Physical and biological evidence supports the probable existence of an enclave of relatively warm climate located between the Southern Appalachian Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean in the United States during the Last Glacial Maximum. The region supported a mosaic of forest and prairie habitats inhabited by a "Floridian" ice-age biota. Plant and vertebrate remains suggest an ecological gradient towards Cape Hatteras (35°N) wherein forests tended to replace prairies, and browsing proboscideans tended to replace grazing proboscideans. Beyond 35°N, warm waters of the Gulf Stream were deflected towards the central Atlantic, and a cold-facies biota replaced "Floridian" biota on the Atlantic coastal plain. Because of niche diversity and relatively benign climate, biodiversity may have been greater in the south-eastern thermal enclave than in other unglaciated areas of North America. However, the impact of terminal Pleistocene megafaunal extinctions may also have been shorter and more severe in the enclave than further north. A comparison with biotic changes that occurred in North America approximately 55 million years (ma) ago at the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum suggests that similar processes of change took place under both ice-house and greenhouse climates.
