Developmental aspects of distal limb conformation in the horse: the potential consequences of uneven feet in foals

Summary Reasons for performing study: Distal limb conformation is generally accepted to be an important item with respect to performance and soundness in mature horses, but little is known about the developmental aspects. Objectives: To gain insight into the development of distal limb conformation and to assess the possible consequences of uneven feet in foals. Methods: Conformation of the distal front limbs of 23 Warmblood foals was scored visually and measured using radiographs, at ages 27 and 55 weeks. At the same ages, pressure measurements were made under both front feet. Results: At both ages the hoof-pastern axis was broken-backwards on radiographs, but only occasionally recognised as such, when scored by eye. Over time, the hoof angle decreased, while both the angles of the dorsal and solar surfaces of the distal phalanx (P3) increased and the parallelism between hoof wall and P3 improved. The foals with uneven feet at age 27 weeks showed a significant difference in distal limb loading that persisted until age 55 weeks. Conclusions: The alignment of the distal limb in the sagittal plane increased in a 6 month period. Visual assessment was not sensitive enough to appreciate this. The growth processes in the distal limb could not compensate for existing unevenness and ensuing asymmetrical limb loading. Potential relevance: Foals have a different conformation of the distal limb from mature horses, which should be taken into account when interpreting radiographs. Unevenness of the feet resulted in asymmetrical loading of the proximal and distal interphalangeal joint, which might lead to increased susceptibility to overload injuries and decreased performance at mature age. Over-expression of a Populus peroxisomal ascorbate peroxidase (PpAPX) gene in tobacco plants enhances stress tolerance

Abstract Ascorbate peroxidase (APX) plays an important role in the metabolism of hydrogen peroxide in higher plants. We studied the effect of over-expressing a Populus peroxisomal ascorbate peroxidase (PpAPX) gene under the control of the cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter or the rd29 promoter in transgenic tobacco. High levels of PpAPX gene expression were observed in 35S-PpAPX transgenic plants, with a 50% increase in APX activity. The constitutive expression of PpAPX in the tobacco exhibited no morphological abnormalities, while significantly increased root growth was observed in transgenic plants, when compared to control plants. Several independently transformed lines were propagated and evaluated for resistance to methyl viologen (MV), drought and salt stress. Visual assessment of transgenic and control lines exposed to MV (50 or 100 ,mol) confirmed that over-expression of APX minimized leaf damage. APX activity was nearly 80% higher in the leaves of transgenic plants in response to drought or salt stresses. Moreover, the transgenic tobacco also showed significantly improved drought resistance and salt tolerance at the vegetative stage. RNA blot analysis indicated that the PpAPX transcript level was very low under normal growing conditions in rd29Ap-PpAPX plants, but clearly increased under drought stress. Our results show that PpAPX does not play a significant role under normal growing conditions, but did ameliorate oxidative injury under abiotic stress. The Ad29 promoter should be used as an inducible promoter in transgenic works. [source]


A visual skills inventory for children with neurological impairments

Children with neurological impairments often have visual deficits that are difficult to quantify. We have compared visual skills evaluated by carers with results of a comprehensive visual assessment. Participants were 76 children with mild to profound intellectual and/or motor impairment (33 males, 43 females; age range 7mo,16y; mean age 5y 1mo [SD 4y 2mo]) who completed a visual skills inventory before attending a special vision clinic. The inventory included 16 questions about visual skills and responses to familiar situations. Responses were augmented by taking a structured clinical history, compared with visual evoked potential (VEP) and/or acuity card measures of visual acuity, and examined using exploratory factor analysis. Acuity ranged from normal to no light perception, and was positively associated with responses to individual questions. After excluding four uninformative questions, an association between the remaining questions and two significant independent factors was found. Factor 1 was associated with questions about visual recognition (e.g. ,Does your child see a small silent toy?') and these items were correlated with both the VEP and acuity card thresholds. Factor 2 was associated primarily with questions about visually mediated social interactions (e.g. ,Does he/she return your silent smile?'). Evaluation of visual skills in children with neurological impairment can provide valid information about the quality of children's vision. Questions with the highest validity for predicting vision are identified. [source]


PERORAL PANCREATOSCOPY: CURRENT STATUS AND FUTURE EXPECTATIONS USING NARROW BAND IMAGING

Peroral pancreatoscopy (POPS) under duodenoscopic assistance provide direct visual assessment of the pancreatic duct, tissue sampling, and therapeutic interventions. Sometimes, pancreatoscopy can confirm accurate diagnosis, such as differential diagnosis of filling defects between intraductal tumors and stones. However, it is often difficult to differentiate malignant from benign strictures solely on pancreatoscopy. It is currently considered that intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) is the most suitable indication of POPS. POPS has several problems: image resolution, fragility and maneuverability. Concerning image resolution, the quality has been improved with the development of a video pancreatoscope. Moreover, the recently developed endoscopic optical technology of narrow band imaging (NBI) is now available to video pancreatoscopy. This will allow direct visual assessment. Although currently POPS has several problems, further improvement will assist POPS to become a useful modality in combination with NBI. [source]


Aortic Valve Closure: Relation to Tissue Velocities by Doppler and Speckle Tracking in Patients with Infarction and at High Heart Rates

Aim: To resolve the event in tissue Doppler (TDI)- and speckle tracking-based velocity/time curves that most accurately represent aortic valve closure (AVC) in infarcted ventricles and at high heart rates. Methods: We studied the timing of AVC in 13 patients with myocardial infarction and in 8 patients at peak dobutamine stress echo. An acquisition setup for recording alternating B-mode and TDI image frames was used to achieve the same frame rate in both cases (mean 136.7 frames per second [FPS] for infarcted ventricles, mean 136.9 FPS for high heart rates). The reference method was visual assessment of AVC in the high frame rate narrow sector B-mode images of the aortic valve. Results: The initial negative velocities after ejection in the velocity/time curves occurred before AVC, 44.9 ± 21.0 msec before the reference in the high heart rate material, and 25.2 ± 15.2 msec before the reference in the infarction material. Using this time point as a marker for AVC may cause inaccuracies when estimating end-systolic strain. A more accurate but still a practical marker for AVC was the time point of zero crossing after the initial negative velocities after ejection, 5.4 ± 15.3 msec before the reference in high heart rates and 8.2 ± 12.9 msec after the reference in the infarction material. Conclusion: The suggested marker of AVC at high heart rate and in infarcted ventricles was the time point of zero crossing after the initial negative velocities after ejection in velocity/time curves. Classification of upper lateral body shapes for the apparel industry

Abstract The lateral body shape is a critical determiner of the fit of garments. Either visual assessment or statistical analysis methods have been used to classify the lateral body types. These methods are limited to some extent since various anthropometric features inherently coexist and interact in a human body shape. This study aims to develop objective criteria for the classification of upper lateral body shapes integrating visual assessment and statistical analysis. The three-dimensional scan data of 246 women between 18 and 49 years old were visually classified into four lateral body shapes by an expert panel. In addition, the back space and lateral angles extracted from the scan data were employed for further statistical analyses. Multinomial logistic regressions were used to develop logit models for lateral body types. It was concluded that the resulting logit models could classify lateral body types and calculate the probability of a set of body scan data being classified as a certain lateral body type. It is expected that this probability might be a guideline to quantify the characteristics of the lateral body shape in the apparel industry. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. [source]


A rapid method to clinically assess the effect of an anti-acne formulation

Sci., 60, 25,29 (January/February 2009) Synopsis Historically, clinical evaluation of acne treatment has been based on direct visual assessment and the counting of lesions over a period of several weeks of treatment. However, with advancing technology there has been ever-increasing speed in the effectiveness of these treatments. To successfully assess these faster treatments, acne pathology needs to be evaluated in a shorter time frame. The object of these studies was to develop techniques to evaluate individual acne lesions in a shorter time frame and to assess speedier treatment technologies. Ten healthy volunteers with acne lesions on their upper backs were recruited for the study. Two inflamed acne lesions were selected for each treatment, along with lesions to be left untreated, on each volunteer. Each lesion was marked, photographed, and visually graded. A skin surface microscope (Scopeman) was used to visualize size and to grade the lesions by two experts every day for five days. The sites were treated once a day for the course of the study. There was a remarkable reduction in the size and erythema of acne lesions after treatment with the acne formulation as compared to the untreated and vehicle-treated lesions. Individual lesions, both treated and untreated, appeared resolved in 14 days. This resolution can be noticeably accelerated by topical treatments. We have developed a simple and faster clinical method to evaluate the effects of topical anti-acne technology. [source]


Combined effects of thymol, carvacrol and grapefruit seed extract on lipid oxidation and colour stability of poultry meat preparations

Summary The combined effects of thymol, carvacrol and grapefruit seed extract (GFSE) on lipid oxidation and colour stability of poultry meat preparations packaged in air or modified atmospheres (MAP: 5% O2; 30% CO2; 65% N2) were investigated using a simplex centroid mixture design. Lipid oxidation was evaluated through measurement of secondary oxidation products (malonaldehyde, MDA) and general appearance with visual assessment and instrumental measurement of colour. Thymol and carvacrol, as individual antioxidants, retarded the oxidation process by maintaining MDA values below 2 mg kg,1 meat. The effect of GFSE was less than thymol and carvacrol. Redness (a*) decreased in all treatments during storage but this reduction was more evident in the control and in samples containing GFSE than in thymol and carvacrol. Although colour acceptability decreased with time, all meat preparations packaged in air maintained desirable appearance better than samples in MAP. Also, off-odours developed faster in the samples packaged in MAP than in aerobically packaged samples. [source]


Selective sampling for approximate clustering of very large data sets

A key challenge in pattern recognition is how to scale the computational efficiency of clustering algorithms on large data sets. The extension of non-Euclidean relational fuzzy c-means (NERF) clustering to very large (VL = unloadable) relational data is called the extended NERF (eNERF) clustering algorithm, which comprises four phases: (i) finding distinguished features that monitor progressive sampling; (ii) progressively sampling from a N × N relational matrix RN to obtain a n × n sample matrix Rn; (iii) clustering Rn with literal NERF; and (iv) extending the clusters in Rn to the remainder of the relational data. Previously published examples on several fairly small data sets suggest that eNERF is feasible for truly large data sets. However, it seems that phases (i) and (ii), i.e., finding Rn, are not very practical because the sample size n often turns out to be roughly 50% of n, and this over-sampling defeats the whole purpose of eNERF. In this paper, we examine the performance of the sampling scheme of eNERF with respect to different parameters. We propose a modified sampling scheme for use with eNERF that combines simple random sampling with (parts of) the sampling procedures used by eNERF and a related algorithm sVAT (scalable visual assessment of clustering tendency). We demonstrate that our modified sampling scheme can eliminate over-sampling of the original progressive sampling scheme, thus enabling the processing of truly VL data. Numerical experiments on a distance matrix of a set of 3,000,000 vectors drawn from a mixture of 5 bivariate normal distributions demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed sampling method. We also find that actually running eNERF on a data set of this size is very costly in terms of computation time. Thus, our results demonstrate that further modification of eNERF, especially the extension stage, will be needed before it is truly practical for VL data. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. [source]


Vasodilators and Nootropics as Predictors of Dementia and Mortality in the PAQUID Cohort

OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of treatment for memory impairment and the Ginkgo biloba extract (EGb 761) on dementia, mortality, and survival without dementia. DESIGN: Prospective community-based cohort study. SETTING: France. PARTICIPANTS: Three thousand five hundred thirty-four subjects aged 65 and older. MEASUREMENTS: Information on drug consumption was obtained by interview and visual assessment of patients' medicine chests. Active screening of dementia was performed every 2 years over a 13-year period. The independent effects of treatment for memory impairment and the Ginkgo biloba extract on the risks of dementia and death were estimated using Cox proportional hazards models, adjusted for potentially confounding factors (including comorbidities). RESULTS: The initial consumption of Ginkgo biloba did not modify the risk of dementia (relative risk (RR)=1.16, 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.84,1.60), whereas the consumption of other treatments for memory impairment was associated with a higher risk of dementia (RR=1.35, 95% CI=1.11,1.63). Subjects who took Ginkgo biloba had a significantly lower risk of mortality in the long term (RR=0.76, 95% CI=0.62,0.93), even after adjustment for potentially confounding factors. The initial consumption of treatment for memory impairment other than Ginkgo biloba did not modify the risk of mortality. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that treatment with EGb 761 may increase the probability of survival in the elderly population. These findings need to be corroborated and further assessed using randomized, controlled trials. [source]


Variation in mammalian proximal femoral development: comparative analysis of two distinct ossification patterns

Abstract The developmental anatomy of the proximal femur is complex. In some mammals, including humans, the femoral head and greater trochanter emerge as separate ossification centres within a common chondroepiphysis and remain separate throughout ontogeny. In other species, these secondary centres coalesce within the chondroepiphysis to form a single osseous epiphysis much like the proximal humerus. These differences in femoral ontogeny have not been previously addressed, yet are critical to an understanding of femoral mineralization and architecture across a wide range of mammals and may have key implications for understanding and treating hip abnormalities in humans. We evaluated femora from 70 mammalian species and categorized each according to the presence of a ,separate' or ,coalesced' proximal epiphysis based on visual assessment. We found that ossification type varies widely among mammals: taxa in the ,coalesced' group include marsupials, artiodactyls, perissodactyls, bats, carnivores and several primates, while the ,separate' group includes hominoids, many rodents, tree shrews and several marine species. There was no clear relationship to body size, phylogeny or locomotion, but qualitative and quantitative differences between the groups suggest that ossification type may be primarily an artefact of femoral shape and neck length. As some osseous abnormalities of the human hip appear to mimic the normal morphology of species with coalesced epiphyses, these results may provide insight into the aetiology and treatment of human hip disorders such as femoroacetabular impingement and early-onset osteoarthritis. Osteoporosis in Patients With Diabetes Mellitus,

Abstract Demographic trends with longer life expectancy and a lifestyle characterized by low physical activity and high-energy food intake contribute to an increasing incidence of diabetes mellitus and osteoporosis. Diabetes mellitus is a risk factor for osteoporotic fractures. Patients with recent onset of type 1 diabetes mellitus may have impaired bone formation because of the absence of the anabolic effects of insulin and amylin, whereas in long-standing type 1 diabetes mellitus, vascular complications may account for low bone mass and increased fracture risk. Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus display an increased fracture risk despite a higher BMD, which is mainly attributable to the increased risk of falling. Strategies to improve BMD and to prevent osteoporotic fractures in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus may include optimal glycemic control and aggressive prevention and treatment of vascular complications. Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus may additionally benefit from early visual assessment, regular exercise to improve muscle strength and balance, and specific measures for preventing falls. A reliable body condition scoring technique for estimating condition in African buffalo

Abstract Evaluating animal body condition is a necessary component of many ecological studies. Although many methods for assessing animal body condition have been developed, relatively few can be used for estimating condition on live animals. Noninvasive body condition scoring techniques have been developed for assessing condition in livestock and more recently such techniques have been applied to wild ungulates. In this study, we examined the reliability of a body condition scoring technique for assessing condition in African buffalo (Syncerus caffer caffer). We compared a body condition score (BCS) based on visual assessment and manual palpation of an animal's body to two standard metrics of condition widely used in mammals: kidney fat index (KFI) and haematocrit (HCT). Across all buffalo, BCS was significantly and positively correlated with both KFI and HCT. For HCT, this pattern was observed among adults, juveniles, males and females; and in the wet season but not in the dry season. For KFI, BCS was significantly and positively correlated with KFI among adults, juveniles and males, but not in females. Overall, our results suggest that the BCS technique can serve as a useful method for estimating body condition in buffalo. Résumé L'évaluation de la condition corporelle d'un animal est une composante nécessaire de nombreuses études écologiques. Bien que l'on ait mis au point de nombreuses méthodes pour réaliser cette évaluation, relativement peu peuvent servir à estimer la condition d'animaux vivants. Des techniques noninvasives ont été développées pour évaluer la condition physique chez le bétail et, plus récemment, de telles techniques ont aussi été appliquées aux animaux sauvages. Dans cette étude, nous avons examiné la fiabilité d'une technique d'évaluation de la condition physique conçue pour étudier celle du buffle africain (Syncerus caffer caffer). Nous avons comparé un indice de condition corporelle (Body condition score , BCS) basé sur une évaluation visuelle et la palpation manuelle du corps d'un animal à deux indicateurs standards de condition largement utilisés chez les mammifères: l'indice graisseux des reins (Kidney fat index , KFI) et l'hématocrite (HTC). Chez tous les buffles, le BCS était significativement et positivement lié avec le KFI et le HTC. Pour le HTC, ce schéma tenait pour les adultes et les juvéniles, mâles et femelles; et en saison des pluies mais pas en saison sèche. En ce qui concerne le KFI, le BCS lui était significativement et positivement lié chez les adultes, les juvéniles et les mâles, mais pas les femelles. En général, nos résultats suggèrent que la technique de BCS peut être une méthode utile pour évaluer la condition corporelle des buffles. [source]


The relationship between flesh quality and numbers of Kudoa thyrsites plasmodia and spores in farmed Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L.

Abstract Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., were exposed to Kudoa thyrsites (Myxozoa, Myxosporea)-containing sea water for 15 months, and then harvested and assessed for parasite burden and fillet quality. At harvest, parasites were enumerated in muscle samples from a variety of somatic and opercular sites, and mean counts were determined for each fish. After 6 days storage at 4 °C, fillet quality was determined by visual assessment and by analysis of muscle firmness using a texture analyzer. Fillet quality could best be predicted by determining mean parasite numbers and spore counts in all eight tissue samples (somatic and opercular) or in four fillet samples, as the counts from opercular samples alone showed greater variability and thus decreased reliability. The variability in both plasmodia and spore numbers between tissue samples taken from an individual fish indicated that the parasites were not uniformly distributed in the somatic musculature. Therefore, to best predict the probable level of fillet degradation caused by K. thyrsites infections, multiple samples must be taken from each fish. If this is performed, a mean plasmodia count of 0.3 mm,2 or a mean spore count of 4.0 × 105 g,1 of tissue are the levels where the probability of severe myoliquefaction becomes a significant risk. The Effect of Repeated Physical Disturbance on Soft Tissue Decomposition,Are Taphonomic Studies an Accurate Reflection of Decomposition?,

Abstract:, Although the relationship between decomposition and postmortem interval has been well studied, almost no studies examined the potential effects of physical disturbance occurring as a result of data collection procedures. This study compares physically disturbed rabbit carcasses with a series of undisturbed carcasses to assess the presence and magnitude of any effects resulting from repetitive disturbance. Decomposition was scored using visual assessment of soft tissue changes, and numerical data such as weight loss and carcass temperature were recorded. The effects of disturbance over time on weight loss, carcass temperature, soil pH and decomposition were studied. In addition, this study aimed to validate some of the anecdotal evidence regarding decomposition. Results indicate disturbance significantly inversely affects both weight loss and carcass temperature. No differences were apparent between groups for soil pH change or overall decomposition stage. An insect-mediated mechanism for the disturbance effect is suggested, along with indications as to why this effect may be cancelled when scoring overall decomposition. [source]


Magnetic resonance portography using contrast-enhanced fat-saturated three-dimensional steady-state free precession imaging

Abstract Purpose To assess the feasibility of contrast-enhanced fat-saturated three-dimensional steady-state free precession (FIESTA) imaging for contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) portography. Materials and Methods Contrast-enhanced fat-saturated three-dimensional fast spoiled gradient-echo (SPGR) and FIESTA were performed as MR portography. In 10 cases, fat-saturated three-dimensional FIESTA was first performed and followed by fast SPGR, and the order of post-contrast imaging was reversed in the other 10 cases. Signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) and contrast-to-noise ratios (CNRs) were estimated for portal and visceral veins on the source images. The visualization of portal vein was scored on three-dimensional MR portography. Portal venous system disorders were assessed using three-dimensional MR portography. Results The SNRs, CNRs, and visual assessment of portal and visceral veins were significantly higher in contrast-enhanced fat-saturated three-dimensional FIESTA than contrast-enhanced fat-saturated three-dimensional fast SPGR (P < 0.05). The contrast-enhanced fat-saturated three-dimensional FIESTA provided high venous signals even at 8 minutes after gadolinium injection. The abnormalities of portal venous system were well visualized with MR portography using contrast-enhanced fat-saturated three-dimensional FIESTA. Conclusion Contrast-enhanced fat-saturated three-dimensional FIESTA was valuable for MR portography, with flexible time window and high vascular signals. The measurement of tooth whiteness by image analysis and spectrophotometry: a comparison

summary, Digital image capturing and analysis techniques have been used to measure the colour of teeth and to compare with spectrophotometric results and visual observations. A non-linear image analysis approach was developed and, for the colour range of human teeth, allows device-dependant digital camera colour data to be quantitatively transformed to Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage (CIE) colorimetric values. With reference to a CIE standard illuminant, two different lighting arrays have been used. For flat and non-translucent white and yellow surfaces, spectrophotometric results showed that this transformation achieves required accuracy. It was found, in all of the present studies, which included measurements on the VITA Lumin® Vacuum shade guide and extracted teeth, that spectrophotometry invariably underestimated values of the CIE whiteness index. However, the results from these two types of measurement correlated well. There was also a reasonably good correlation between earlier data obtained by visual assessment and the present data by the two instrumental methods. For extracted teeth, both instrumental methods used in this work did not confirm a whitening effect for 2-min brushing with toothpaste, but did show significant whitening results for bleaching with 15% hydrogen peroxide. Early detection of bone infection and differentiation from post-surgical inflammation using 2-deoxy-2-[18F]-fluoro- D -glucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) in an animal model

Abstract Diagnosing bone infection in the context of post-surgical inflammation is problematic since many of the early signs of infection are similar to normal post-surgical changes. We used a rabbit osteomyelitis model to evaluate the use of 2-deoxy-2-[18F]-fluoro- D -glucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) as a means of detecting post-operative infection in the context of post-surgical inflammation. Comparisons were made between infected and non-infected rabbits in which infection with Staphylococcus aureus was initiated at the time of surgery. Weekly PET scans were obtained 30 and 60 min after the introduction of FDG and analyzed based on standardized uptake values (SUV) at the surgical site and visual assessment of the presence or absence of infection. Concurrent X-rays were taken immediately prior to scanning. At 4 weeks post-operatively, animals were sacrificed for histologic and bacteriologic confirmation of infection. Uptake of FDG was evident in the bone of all rabbits on day 1 post-surgery, however, SUV comparisons from the surgical site could not be used to distinguish between the infected and uninfected groups until day 15. Visual analysis of FDG-PET scans revealed a significant difference (p < 0.01) between the infected and uninfected groups as early as day 8. Quantifying Phytophthora medicaginis in Susceptible and Resistant Alfalfa with a Real-Time Fluorescent PCR Assay

Abstract A real-time fluorescent PCR assay using a set of specific primers and a fluorochrome-labelled probe (TaqMan) was developed to quantify the amount of Phytophthora medicaginis DNA in alfalfa plants that were classified as either resistant or susceptible to the pathogen based on visual assessment of disease response. The assay clearly discriminated among three standard check alfalfa populations with different levels of resistance based on the analysis of DNA extracted from the roots of bulked plant samples. In two independent experiments, the Spearman rank correlation between pathogen DNA content and the number of susceptible plants in a bulked sample was greater than 0.89 and highly significant (P<0.0001). Significantly less pathogen DNA was detected in bulked samples of a highly resistant check population than in bulked samples from more susceptible check populations. Analysis of individual plants indicated that significantly less pathogen DNA was detected in resistant plants than in susceptible plants. Applications of the assay are considered for breeding programs and the study of microbial population dynamics in plants simultaneously infected with different pathogens. [source]


Human Perception of Dental Porcelain Translucency Correlated to Spectrophotometric Measurements

Abstract Purpose: This study evaluated the relationship between instrumental measurements and subjective visual assessment of differences in dental porcelain translucency. Materials and Methods: Unshaded feldspathic porcelain was used with controlled amounts of tin oxide to create two groups of 12-mm diameter disks with incremental changes in opacity. Contrast ratio (CR = Yb/Yw) was determined with a spectrophotometer, and used as a measure of porcelain translucency (Group A = 0.20 to 0.40; Group B = 0.6,0.8). Within each group, there were 14 specimens with 11 CRs. Three observer groups (first year dental students, residents, faculty with >10 years of shade matching experience) were recruited to assess the translucency between porcelain disks under two lighting conditions (reflected light, transmitted light). Each subject's ability to distinguish between specimens of differing translucency was determined. Descriptive statistics and three-way ANOVA followed by a post-hoc Tukey-Kramer test were used to evaluate the translucency perception threshold (TPT) of subjects (,= 0.05). Results: The overall mean TPT (,C) was 0.07, while 50% of the subjects could perceive a 0.06 CR difference between porcelain specimens. Three-way ANOVA revealed a significant difference in translucency perception among the observer groups (p < 0.0001), whereas the main effects for porcelain opacity (p= 0.3038) and lighting condition (p= 0.0645) were not significant, and no significant interactions were found. Post-hoc Tukey-Kramer test indicated that the mean TPT observed in the faculty group (,C = 0.04) was significantly lower than those observed in student (,C = 0.09) and resident groups (,C = 0.08), while there was no significant difference between students and residents. Conclusions: The overall mean TPT of all subjects was 0.07, and 50% of the study population perceived a 0.06 CR difference in translucency. Increased shade matching experience (,10 years) significantly improved the ability to perceive differences in translucency; however, neither the viewing condition nor porcelain opacity affected the perceived translucency threshold. NATURAL RESTABILIZATION OF STREAM CHANNELS IN URBAN WATERSHEDS,

ABSTRACT: Stream channels are known to change their form as a result of watershed urbanization, but do they restabilize under subsequent conditions of constant urban land use? Streams in seven developed and developing watersheds (drainage areas 5,35 km2) in the Puget Sound lowlands were evaluated for their channel stability and degree of urbanization, using field and historical data. Protocols for determining channel stability by visual assessment, calculated bed mobility at bankfull flows, and resurveyed cross-sections were compared and yielded nearly identical results. We found that channel restabilization generally does occur within one or two decades of constant watershed land use, but it is not universal. When (or if) an individual stream will restabilize depends on specific hydrologic and geomorphic characteristics of the channel and its watershed; observed stability is not well predicted by simply the magnitude of urban development or the rate of ongoing land-use change. The tendency for channel restabilization suggests that management efforts focused primarily on maintaining stability, particularly in a still-urbanizing watershed, may not always be necessary. Yet physical stability alone is not a sufficient condition for a biologically healthy stream, and additional rehabilitation measures will almost certainly be required to restore biological conditions in urban systems. Influence of facial skin attributes on the perceived age of Caucasian women

Abstract Background and objective, The facial appearance of a person does not always reflect the chronological age; some people look younger or older than they really are. Many studies have described the changes in skin properties (colour, wrinkles, sagging, micro relief, etc.) with age, but few of them have analysed their influence on the perceived age. The primary objective of this study was to assess the contribution of individual skin attributes of the face on the perceived age of Caucasian women. Secondary objectives were to assess the influence of age and gender of graders with regard to the age perception. Subjects and method, A random sample of 173 subjects of 20 to 74 years of age was taken from a database of more than 5000 healthy Caucasian women. A trained grader performed visual assessment of facial skin attributes (using a visual analogue scale), and a front face photograph was taken from each subject. Photographs were shown to 48 graders (20 men and 28 women, aged 22,64 years) who were asked to estimate the age of the subjects. Graders were classified as young (less than 35 years), middle age (35,50 years) and seniors (older than 50 years). Partial Least Square regression models were built to predict the chronological and the perceived age from the measured facial individual attributes. The contribution of each attribute within the regression model enabled to measure the relevance of this attribute with regards to age prediction. Results, The eye area and the skin colour uniformity were the main attributes related to perceived age. For age prediction, older graders' estimations were more driven by lips border definition shape and eyes opening, whereas younger graders' (older than 50 years) estimations were more driven by dark circles, nasolabial fold and brown spots. There were statistically significant differences in graders' age perception between gender and among age ranges. Our findings suggest that female graders are more accurate than male, and younger graders (under 35 years) are more accurate than older (over 50 years) to predict Caucasian women age from facial photographs. Conclusions, Different skin attributes influence the estimation of age. These attributes have a different weight in the evaluation of the perceived age, depending on the age and of the observer. The most important attributes to estimate age are eyes, lips and skin colour uniformity. [source]


A method for quantifying rotational symmetry

Summary ,,Here, a new approach for quantifying rotational symmetry based on vector analysis was described and compared with information obtained from a geometric morphometric analysis and a technique based on distance alone. ,,A new method was developed that generates a polygon from the length and angle data of a structure and then quantifies the minimum change necessary to convert that polygon into a regular polygon. This technique yielded an asymmetry score (s) that can range from 0 (perfect symmetry) to 1 (complete asymmetry). Using digital images of Geranium robertianum flowers, this new method was compared with a technique based on lengths alone and with established geometric morphometric methods used to quantify shape variation. ,,Asymmetry scores (s) more clearly described variation in symmetry and were more consistent with a visual assessment of the images than either comparative technique. ,,This procedure is the first to quantify the asymmetry of radial structures accurately, uses easily obtainable measures to calculate the asymmetry score and allows comparisons among individuals and species, even when the comparisons involve structures with different patterns of symmetry. This technique enables the rigorous analysis of polysymmetric structures and provides a foundation for a better understanding of symmetry in nature. [source]


Cervical column morphology in patients with skeletal open bite

Setting and Sample Population,,, Thirty-eight open bite patients, 27 women, aged 17,39 years, and 11 males, aged 18,40 years were compared with 21 controls, 15 females, aged 23,40 years, and six males aged 25,44 years from profile radiographs. Outcome measure,,, From each individual a visual assessment of the cervical column and angular measurements of the craniofacial dimensions were performed on profile radiographs. Results,,, In the open bite group 42.1% had cervical column body fusion, and 13.2% had posterior arch deficiency. The fusion always occurred between C2 and C3. Cervical column deviations occurred significantly more often in the open bite group compared with the control group (p < 0.05). Associations were found between fusions of the cervical column and maxillary retrognathia (p < 0.05), large maxillary inclination (p < 0.05) and large cranial base angle (p < 0.05). Associations were also found between posterior arch deficiency and maxillary retrognathia (p < 0.05) and cranial base angle (p < 0.05). The craniofacial parameter most important for the fusions and posterior arch deficiency was the maxillary retrognathia (p < 0.01, R,2 = 0.20; p < 0.05, R,2 = 0.26, respectively). Conclusion,,, New associations between skeletal open bite and cervical column deviations are described. It is suggested that this knowledge is incorporated in future diagnostic and orthodontic treatment planning. [source]


The Effects Of Tizanidine HCL (Zanaflex®) In Patients With Fibromyalgia

David McLain, MD, Brookwood Medical Center, Birmingham, AL This open-label, single-center, dose-finding study of Zanaflex (tizanidine hydrochloride) in 43 patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia showed some effectiveness in reducing pain and other symptoms of this syndrome. Fibromyalgia is a common syndrome characterized by chronic musculoskeletal pain in all 4 quadrants and pain in 18 identified tender points. Effects on fatigue, pain, sleep, and tender points were assessed before and during treatment. Starting doses of 2 mg/day were increased to 4 mg/day after 5 days and increased further as tolerated. Most patients stayed at 4 mg/day or 8 mg/day, and the highest dosage achieved was 12 mg/day. After the initial visit, 6 patients discontinued Zanaflex because of side effects (headaches in 3, hallucinations in 1, hypotension in 1, asthenia in 1), and 11 did not return for a follow-up visit. Results are presented for the remaining 26 patients (25 females; average age 50 years (range, 36,64 years); 25 Caucasian, 1 African-American; 9 on disability or applying for it; all stable on one or more of the following concomitant medications: narcotic analgesics 15%, antidepressants 65%, NSAIDs 46%). On average, at the first follow-up visit (average time 7.8 weeks), patients showed reduction in tender points and improvement on global assessment (GA) scores, Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ) results, and visual assessment (VAS) scores for fatigue, pain, and sleep. The results for patients still working or retired were better than those for patients on disability or applying for it. Of the 26 patients in this ongoing study, 14 have had second follow-up visits (average time 13.3 weeks). Of these, 2 discontinued the drug at the second follow-up visit. Six of these patients responded especially well to long-term treatment (average age 51 years; range 46,60 years; 5 females; 1 on disability or applying for it) and showed the following averaged results: global assessment improved by 47%, FIQ by 35%, VAS-fatigue by 48%, VAS-pain by 40%, VAS-sleep by 37%, and tender points by 18%. Zanaflex appears to be effective in improving overall functioning, reducing pain and fatigue, improving sleep, and reducing the number of painful tender points in some patients with fibromyalgia, especially in those who are not on disability or applying for it. Reduction of the UV burden to indoor tanners through new exposure schedules: a pilot study

Background: The development of new pigmentation (tan) in human skin after UV exposure requires several days. Once it is developed, the tan can last for weeks. Current recommendations for tanning exposure schedules in the USA (FDA Letter to Manufacturers: Policy on maximum timer interval and exposure schedule for sunlamps, August 21, 1986) allow exposures three times per week for the development of a tan, and one to two times per week for maintenance exposures. However, this policy is often interpreted in the indoor tanning industry as allowing three exposures per week on a continuous basis. We believe that the reduction of the recommended cumulative dose to indoor tanners should be explored. Two approaches for achieving this are (1) decreasing the number of exposures and (2) increasing the time interval between exposures. To explore such changes, we conducted a pilot study. Methods: The pilot study involved three exposure schedules (evaluated on each of six subjects) that evolved throughout the course of the study. Digital photography, visual assessment and diffuse reflectance spectrometry were used to assess skin color changes. The six pilot subjects were studied for 8,18 weeks. The changes in skin color obtained through the use of the different exposure schedules were compared with changes reported by Caswell (Caswell M, The kinetics of the tanning response to tanning bed exposures, Photodermatol Photoimmunol Photomed 2000: 16: 10,14) who used schedules based on current recommendations. Results: Two out of the three experimental schedules produced tans comparable with those reported by Caswell. In these two schedules, cumulative doses were a factor of 2,3 below doses from current schedules. Conclusion: The UV burden to indoor tanners can be substantially reduced without compromising the cosmetic effect. These results need to be confirmed in a larger study. [source]


Evaluation of a rapid diagnostic field test kit for identification of Phytophthora species, including P. ramorum and P. kernoviae at the point of inspection

Plant health regulations to prevent the introduction and spread of Phytophthora ramorum and P. kernoviae require rapid, cost effective diagnostic methods for screening large numbers of plant samples at the time of inspection. Current on-site techniques require expensive equipment, considerable expertise and are not suited for plant health inspectors. Therefore, an extensive evaluation of a commercially available lateral flow device (LFD) for Phytophthora species was performed involving four separate trials and 634 samples. The assay proved simple to use, provided results in a few minutes and on every occasion a control line reacted positively confirming the validity of the test. LFD results were compared with those from testing a parallel sample, using laboratory methods (isolation and real-time PCR). The diagnostic sensitivity of the LFD (87·6%) compared favourably with the standard laboratory methods although the diagnostic specificity was not as stringent (82·9%). There were a small number (n = 28) of false negatives, but for statutory purposes where all positive samples must be identified to species level by laboratory testing, overall efficiency was 95·6% as compared with visual assessment of symptoms of between 20-30% for P. ramorum and P. kernoviae. This work demonstrates the value of the LFD for diagnosing Phytophthora species at the time of inspection and as a useful primary screen for selecting samples for laboratory testing to determine the species identification. Bleeding of anaesthetized and exhausted Atlantic salmon: body cavity inspection and residual blood in pre-rigor and smoked fillets as determined by various analytical methods

Abstract The bleeding efficiency of anaesthetized and exhausted Atlantic salmon was studied. Unbled fish were used as control groups for both treatments. Several analytical methods (computer vision, Minolta Chroma Meter, transflectance spectroscopy, haemoglobin iron and visual assessment of smoked fillets) were used to evaluate colour or residual blood contents of pre-rigor and smoked fillets. In all cases, the amount of residual blood in the fillets was modest and blood was not considered a quality problem in terms of fillet appearance. Perimortem stress did not affect residual blood contents of pre-rigor fillets. Only salting and smoking had a significant effect on filet colour. The low levels of residual blood was partly attributed to filleting shortly after killing allowing washing before the blood had time to coagulate. In addition, a computer vision method was developed for automated blood inspection of the body cavity after gutting and washing. A classifier (,no blood' or ,blood present') based on linear discriminant analysis was tested and the classification accuracy was over 90% as evaluated with the leave-one-out method. [source]


Activated coagulation times in normal cats and dogs using MAX-ACTTM tubes

Objective, To establish reference values for activated coagulation time (ACT) in normal cats and dogs, by visual assessment of clot formation using the MAX-ACTTM tube. Subjects, We recruited 43 cats and 50 dogs for the study; 11 cats and 4 dogs were excluded from the statistical analysis because of abnormalities on clinical examination or laboratory testing including anaemia, prolonged prothrombin time (PT) or activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), or insufficient plasma volume for comprehensive laboratory coagulation testing. Procedure, Blood samples were collected via direct venipuncture for MAX-ACT, packed cell volume/total solids, manual platelet estimation and PT/APTT measurement. Blood (0.5 mL) was mixed gently in the MAX-ACT tube at 37°C for 30 s, then assessed for clot formation every 5 to 10 s by tipping the tube gently on its side and monitoring for magnet movement. The endpoint was defined as the magnet lodging in the clot. The technique was tested with 10 dogs by collecting two blood samples from the same needle insertion and running a MAX-ACT on each simultaneously. Results, In normal cats the mean MAX-ACT was 66 s (range 55,85 s). In normal dogs the mean was 71 s (range 55,80 s). There was no statistical difference between the first and second samples collected from the same needle insertion. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance, In both cats and dogs, a MAX-ACT result >85 s should be considered abnormal and further coagulation testing should be performed. Additionally, failure to discard the first few drops of the sample does not appear to significantly affect results. [source]
