Selected AbstractsThe LEAD Portal: a TeraGrid gateway and application service architectureCONCURRENCY AND COMPUTATION: PRACTICE & EXPERIENCE, Issue 6 2007Marcus Christie Abstract The Linked Environments for Atmospheric Discovery (LEAD) Portal is a science application portal designed to enable effective use of Grid resources in exploring mesoscale meteorological phenomena. The aim of the LEAD Portal is to provide a more productive interface for doing experimental work by the meteorological research community, as well as bringing weather research to a wider class of users, meaning pre-college students in grades 6,12 and undergraduate college students. In this paper, we give an overview of the LEAD project and the role that LEAD portal is playing in reaching its goals. We then describe the various technologies we are using to bring powerful and complex scientific tools to educational and research users. These technologies,a fine-grained capability based authorization framework, an application service factory toolkit, and a Web services-based workflow execution engine and supporting tools,enable our team to deploy these once inaccessible, stovepipe scientific codes onto a Grid where they can be collectively utilized. [source] Oral insulin , a review of current statusDIABETES OBESITY & METABOLISM, Issue 3 2010Harish Iyer Oral insulin is one of the most exciting areas of development in the treatment of diabetes because of its potential benefit in patient convenience, rapid insulinization of liver, adequate insulin delivery avoiding peripheral hyperinsulinaemia while potentially avoiding adverse effects of weight gain and hypoglycaemia. Growing evidence that earlier initiation of intensive insulin therapy produces sustained tight glycaemic control resulting in substantial delay in complications makes an effective oral insulin product even more vital for the management of patients with diabetes. Despite knowledge of this unmet medical need, oral delivery of insulin has been unsuccessful because of several barriers. For several decades, researchers have tried to develop oral insulin using various technologies without much clinical or commercial success. This review summarizes the development status of oral insulins which are publicly reported to be undergoing clinical studies. Currently, two oral insulin products are in an advanced stage of clinical development and first data from long-term therapy are expected to be available in the second half of 2010. Fernandez Magnetic resonance imaging, bi-plane X-ray fluoroscopy and biomechanical modelling are enabling technologies for the non-invasive evaluation of muscle, ligament and joint function during dynamic activity. This paper reviews these various technologies in the context of their application to the study of human movement. We describe how three-dimensional, subject-specific computer models of the muscles, ligaments, cartilage and bones can be developed from high-resolution magnetic resonance images; how X-ray fluoroscopy can be used to measure the relative movements of the bones at a joint in three dimensions with submillimetre accuracy; how complex 3-D dynamic simulations of movement can be performed using new computational methods based on non-linear control theory; and how musculoskeletal forces derived from such simulations can be used as inputs to elaborate finite-element models of a joint to calculate contact stress distributions on a subject-specific basis. A hierarchical modelling approach is highlighted that links rigid-body models of limb segments with detailed finite-element models of the joints. A framework is proposed that integrates subject-specific musculoskeletal computer models with highly accurate in vivo experimental data. Bonwick Abstract The purpose of this paper is to introduce the reader to immunoassays. This paper is the first in a themed issue of the Journal in which a number of papers have been brought together in order to demonstrate the types and variety of immunoassays, which are currently available. Indeed it might be said that all an analyst needs to do is to name a molecule and somewhere there will now be an immunoassay for the detection of that molecule. This obviously is not entirely accurate, however immunoassays do provide a powerful tool, which can be used in the analysis and quality control of food materials. For both the novice and the experienced worker the specialist terminology of a subject presents an initial barrier, which must be overcome before full understanding is achieved. In this paper an attempt is made to introduce the important terms with which the reader should be familiar and to try to set the various technologies in context. The various basic methods are described and the theoretical and practical basis of more sophisticated assays now being devised are introduced. [source] World Vision case study of Sigma, an analysis tool based on the Alterian database engineINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF NONPROFIT & VOLUNTARY SECTOR MARKETING, Issue 4 2001Scott Logie One of the major issues charities have been concerned with for many years is the inability to access donor records for marketing analysis purposes,donor information has literally been locked up. Charity database tools such as Raiser's Edge and Alms have been built to provide donor details on a record-by-record basis rather than to provide summary information across the entire base. These tools carry out this function very well and have the added benefit of providing data to call centre staff as they make or receive calls from donors. As each charity has to compete more intensely for their share of donor value, however, more detailed behavioural analysis of donor bases is required. To do this, access to the entire donor data is essential, not one record at a time, but structured in a way that allows ad hoc querying. This paper discusses the various technologies that can be used to access donor data for analytical purposes and explains the merits of a new database engine developed by Alterian that allows easy and fast access to many records across multiple data tables. It also shows how one organisation has used the engine to develop a bespoke analysis tool for the charity sector and how a leading relief and development agency, World Vision, is using this tool. Abstract:, Whole pancreas and islet cell transplantation are both reliant upon the procurement and preservation of a high quality donor pancreas for a successful outcome. In the climate of a reducing donor pool it is imperative that donor optimization, meticulous surgical retrieval and evidence based methods of preservation are practiced to ensure optimal graft quality. Moreover expanded criteria donors and novel methods of pancreas preservation have the potential to expand the number of usable grafts and increase the availability of these transplant modalities to suitable patients with diabetes. This article provides a review of the current literature surrounding donor management, surgical technique and the various technologies of organ preservation applicable to the donor pancreas.
