Selected AbstractsProduction of PHB from Crude GlycerolENGINEERING IN LIFE SCIENCES (ELECTRONIC), Issue 5 2007G. Mothes Abstract Crude glycerol , a by-product of the large scale production of diesel oil from rape , is examined for its possible use as a cheap feedstock for the biotechnological synthesis of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB). The glycerol samples of various manufacturers differ in their contamination with salts (NaCl or K2SO4), methanol or fatty acids. At high cell density fermentation these pollutants could possibly accumulate to inhibiting concentrations. The bacteria used were Paracoccus denitrificans and Cupriavidus necator JMP 134, which accumulate PHB from pure glycerol to a content of 70 % of cell dry mass. When using crude glycerol containing 5.5 % NaCl, a reduced PHB content of 48 % was observed at a bacterial dry mass of 50 g/L. Furthermore the PHB yield coefficient was reduced, obviously due to osmoregulation. The effect of glycerol contaminated with K2SO4 was less pronounced. The molecular weight of PHB produced with P. denitrificans or C. necator from crude glycerol varies between 620000 and 750000 g/mol which allows the processing by common techniques of the polymer industry. [source] Evaluation of efficacy in terms of antibody levels and cell-mediated immunity of acellular pertussis vaccines in a murine model of respiratory infectionFEMS IMMUNOLOGY & MEDICAL MICROBIOLOGY, Issue 3 2002Mineo Watanabe Abstract The efficacy of six acellular pertussis vaccines, prepared by various manufacturers in Japan, was investigated in a murine model of respiratory infection (aerosol challenge model) and a murine intracerebral (i.c.) challenge model. There was a good correlation between bacterial clearance from the lungs after aerosol challenge and the potency of vaccines as determined by i.c. challenge. The levels of antibodies against filamentous hemagglutinin were higher after immunizations with all tested vaccines than the levels of antibodies against pertussis toxin and pertactin. Spleen cells from mice immunized with each individual vaccine secreted interferon , (IFN-,) in response to stimulation by pertussis toxin, filamentous hemagglutinin and fimbriae. The production of interleukin-4 in response to each of the antigens tested was detected but was lower than that of IFN-,. However, antibody levels and cell-mediated immune responses were not correlated with the protective effects of the vaccines after aerosol challenge and after i.c. challenge. [source] Redo-OPCAB via Left Thoracotomy Using Symmetry Aortic Connector System:JOURNAL OF CARDIAC SURGERY, Issue 1 2004A Report of Two Cases This approach has also been successfully used in off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB). Traditionally, the grafts have been anastomosed proximally to the descending thoracic aorta or the left subclavian artery. Recently, proximal connectors have been introduced by various manufacturers for use on ascending aorta during primary CABG and OPCAB. One such device is the Symmetry aortic connector system (St. Jude Medical, Minneapolis, MN). These devices have obviated the need for partial occluding clamps for the construction of the proximal anastomoses and hence are extremely useful when the aorta is heavily calcified. We used this device successfully in two patients undergoing redo-OPCAB, where the proximal anastomosis was constructed on the descending aorta. In so doing, we also used the shortest possible length of vein graft since the descending aorta at that level was much closer than the left subclavian artery. This can be an additional factor in redo-operations where the availability of vein can be an issue. Abstract:, Body fillers are sometimes encountered with paint evidence from hit-and-run accidents. Little forensic research has been conducted and published on the subject since 1986. The objective of this study was to determine if chemical and physical differences in body fillers from various manufacturers existed and could be identified. Thirty-three samples of light-weight automobile body fillers and spot putties were obtained. The fillers and putties were compared using light microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDX), and pyrolysis gas chromatography (pyGC). Results from fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis placed the samples into five groups and differentiated six samples. Light microscopy placed the samples into one of five color groups. PyGC placed the samples into three groups and differentiated one sample. SEM-EDX placed the samples into four groups and differentiated 13 samples. Using these analysis methods, 19 of the 33 samples could be discriminated. The best discriminatory tool was found to be SEM-EDX. ROD GIMBEL M.D. Background: A relaxation of the prohibition of scanning cardiac rhythm device patients is underway, largely because of the growing experience of safe scanning events at 1.5T. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 3T is becoming more common and may pose a different risk profile and outcome of MRI of cardiac device patients. Methods: No restrictions were placed on pacemaker dependency, region scanned, device type, or manufacturer. Sixteen scans at 3T were performed with an electrophysiologist present on 14 patients with a variety of devices from various manufacturers. An "MRI-S" strategy was used. Multimodal monitoring was required. Device interrogation was performed prior to, immediately after, and 1,3 months after the MRI. For nonpacemaker-dependent device patients, attempts were made to turn all device features off (with OOO programming the goal) conceptually rendering the device "invisible." In pacemaker-dependent patients, the device was programmed to asynchronous mode at highest output for the duration of the scan with the goal of rendering the device conceptually "invulnerable" to MRI effects. The specific absorption rate (SAR) was limited to 2W/kg. Results: All patients were successfully scanned. No arrhythmias were noted. No significant change in the programmed parameters, pacing thresholds, sensing, impedance, or battery parameters was noted. The insertable loop recorder (ILR) recorded prolonged artifactual asystole during MRI. One patient noted chest burning during the scan. Conclusions: Device patients may undergo carefully tailored 3T MRI scans when pre-MRI reprogramming of the device occurs in conjunction with extensive monitoring, supervision, and follow-up.
