Progressive Sensorineural Hearing Loss in Children With Mitochondrial Encephalomyopathies,

Abstract Objective Mitochondrial disorders are responsible for a variety of neurological syndromes. Specific mitochondrial DNA mutations have been identified recently in some of these rare disorders. Clinical symptoms may occur in different organs to various extent; often they are associated with progressive hearing loss. The aims of this study were to determine incidence, onset, and characteristics of hearing loss in children with mitochondrial encephalomyopathies and to investigate a possible correlation between the degree of hearing loss and neurological symptoms. In addition, we investigated the prognostic value of hearing loss as a predictor of the disease. Study Design From August 1992 to September 1998, 29 patients ranging in age from 5 to 23 years (mean years) were studied. These children were hospitalized for diagnostic purposes in the neuropediatric department. Methods The mitochondrial disorder was diagnosed by clinical and laboratory testings, including analysis of the mtDNA. Audiological evaluation consisted of measurements of pure-tone and speech audiometry, tympanometry, and acoustic refle- threshold testing, auditory brainstem response, and evoked as well as distortion-product otoacoustic emissions. Results A sensorineural hearing loss was identified in 12 children. Three of these were diagnosed as having classic Kearns-Sayre syndrome; five as having multisystem KSS; two as having the syndrome of mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS); one as having KSS-MELAS overlap syndrome; and one as having Friedreich ataxia. Longitudinal testing was performed in seven children, and in all of them a progression of the hearing loss could be demonstrated. Audiological test results in all 12 children suggested cochlear as well as retrocochlear origin of the hearing loss presenting independently from the severity of hearing impairment. No correlation between the characteristics and degrees of hearing loss and the number and severity of clinical neurological symptoms could be found. Conclusions The present study demonstrated a high incidence (42%) of sensorineural hearing loss in children with mitochondrial encephalomyopathies. The progressive nature of the hearing impairment was confirmed by a significant correlation between the duration in years and severity of hearing loss in the children. The hearing loss does not have a prognostic value for the progression of the disorder. Based on our findings, we recommend regular audiometric examinations in patients with mitochondrial disorders. The grassland farming system and sustainable agricultural development in China

Abstract Grassland is the largest terrestrial ecosystem in China, at about 39 280 × 104 ha and covers 41% of the total land area. Grasslands not only provide forage to feed livestock, but also play a critical role in alleviating many of the most challenging environmental and ecological problems that humankind is facing. About 90% of the total usable grassland in China has been degraded to various extents and this is the number one problem facing agricultural production, rural development and environmental improvement. Research on grassland degradation has been carried out since the early 1950s. Enormous achievements have been made and theory and a technical system for pastoral agriculture have been developed. This pastoral agriculture system is a well-organized modern farming system including four production levels, that is, preplant, plant, animal and postbiotic levels, and is linked by three interfaces, including vegetation-site, grassland-animal and production-management. The system capacity and productivity could be improved by system coupling. Since it emerged, this pastoral agriculture system has been established in various ecological regions in China and significant improvements in agricultural sustainability, farmer's income and environmental stability have been obtained. In the future, it will play a more critical role in developing sustainable agriculture in China. [source]


Geochemistry of peridotite xenoliths in alkali basalts from Jeju Island, Korea

Abstract Ultramafic xenoliths in alkali basalts from Jeju Island, Korea, are mostly spinel lherzolites with subordinate amounts of spinel harzburgites and pyroxenites. The compositions of major oxides and compatible to moderately incompatible elements of the Jeju peridotite xenoliths suggest that they are residues after various extents of melting. The estimated degrees of partial melting from compositionally homogeneous and unfractionated mantle to form the residual xenoliths reach 30%. However, their complex patterns of chondrite-normalized rare earth element, from light rare earth element (LREE)-depleted through spoon-shaped to LREE-enriched, reflect an additional process. Metasomatism by a small amount of melt/fluid enriched in LREE followed the former melt removal, which resulted in the enrichment of the incompatible trace elements. Sr and Nd isotopic ratios of the Jeju xenoliths display a wide scatter from depleted mid-oceanic ridge basalt (MORB)-like to near bulk-earth estimates along the MORB,oceanic island basalt (OIB) mantle array. The varieties in modal proportions of minerals, (La/Yb)N ratio and Sr-Nd isotopes for the xenoliths demonstrate that the lithospheric mantle beneath Jeju Island is heterogeneous. The heterogeneity is a probable result of its long-term growth and enrichment history. [source]


Evaluation of the potential of polymeric carriers based on chitosan- grafted -polyacrylonitrile in the formulation of drug delivery systems

Abstract Graft copolymerization of chitosan with acrylonitrile (AN) was carried out by free radical polymerization using KMnO4 and oxalic acid as a combined redox initiator system. Graft copolymerization was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectra (1H-NMR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) measurements, and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). In addition, further modification of the cyano groups of the grafted copolymers was performed by partial hydrolysis into carboxylic function groups with various extents. The extent of hydrolysis was monitored using FTIR spectroscopy. The potential of the hydrolyzed and unhydrolyzed grafted copolymers as polymeric carriers for drug delivery systems was extensively studied by preparation of tablets incorporated with methyl orange (MO) as a drug model. In vitro drug release was carried out in simulated gastric and intestinal conditions. The effects of grafting percentage (GP) and the extent of hydrolysis on the release kinetics were evaluated. Release continued up to 24 h for both hydrolyzed and unhydrolysed chitosan- g -PAN copolymers. Surface wound healing: a new, general function of eukaryotic cells

Abstract The ability to repair surface wounds is a property, necessary for long-term survival, expressed to various extents by all eukaryotic cell types except erythrocytes. The process is based on the rapid Ca2+ -induced exocytosis of various types of specific organelles, such as lysosomes and enlargeosomes, that decreases surface tension and makes possible the spontaneous fusion of lipid monolayers at the lesion edges. The recognized importance of the process in physiology and in several cases of pathology is discussed. [source]


COOKING BEHAVIOR OF RICE AND BLACK GRAM IN THE PREPARATION OF IDLI, A TRADITIONAL FERMENTED PRODUCT OF INDIAN ORIGIN, BY VISCOGRAPHY

ABSTRACT Pasting profile of coarse rice, fine rice as well as black gram was carried out individually, in combination, in flour as well as in batter form, before and after fermentation by Brabender Viscoamylograph. Lowest gelatinization temperature was seen in black gram among the three commodities studied. Coarse rice registered a peak viscosity (PV) of 1,300 BU, fine rice 1,030 BU and black gram 1,080 BU. Cold paste viscosity (CPV) was highest in fine rice, lowest in black gram and intermediate in coarse rice. Breakdown (BD) was least in fine rice, highest in coarse rice and black gram lay in between. Values of total setback indicated the strong reason for use of coarse rice in parboiling as well as in idli and dosa preparations. Physical combination of black gram, with fine as well as coarse rice, reduced PV on an average to an extent of 26,30%. CPV was highest in fine rice and black gram combination compared with that of coarse rice and black gram. BD was high in the physical mix of coarse rice and black gram. In comparison with physical mix of fine rice and black gram, in the batter form before fermentation, the PV and CPV reduced by 23 and 34%, respectively, but there was no BD in this mix, indicating restricted swelling behavior in the batter before fermentation. Almost all viscographic parameters reduced before fermentation in coarse rice and black gram compared with their physical combination. Highest relative BD (BDr) was noticed in the pasting profile of black gram alone, probably because of the presence of mucilaginous principle. BDr values increased in batter form to various extents, before and after fermentation, compared with physical combination of rice and black gram. After fermentation, in coarse rice and black gram, the BDr value was low compared with that in fine rice and black gram. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Fermented products are commonly ingested in India, especially in the southern states. Nowadays, batter is sold in public for the sake of convenience, as it is a common breakfast preparation. The practice is to use coarse rice for the preparation of idli, a steamed fermented product. It is generally not known how the rice behaves before and after fermentation while cooking. Hence, this work was planned, and results indicated the scientific basis for the usage of coarse rice in the preparation of rice products. The behavior of batter prepared from fine rice has also been described, although it is not an economically viable option. [source]


39Ar- 40Ar chronology of R chondrites

The 39Ar- 40Ar ages were determined on whole-rock samples of four R chondrites: Carlisle Lakes, Rumuruti, Acfer 217, and Pecora Escarpment #91002 (PCA 91002). All samples are breccias except for Carlisle Lakes. The age spectra are complicated by recoil and diffusive loss to various extents. The peak 39Ar- 40Ar ages of the four chondrites are 4.35, ,4.47 ± 0.02, 4.30 ± 0.07 Ga, and 4.37 Ga, respectively. These ages are similar to Ar-Ar ages of relatively unshocked ordinary chondrites (4.52,4.38 Ga) and are older than Ar-Ar ages of most shocked ordinary chondrites («4.2 Ga). Because the meteorites with the oldest (Rumuruti, ,4.47 Ga) and the youngest (Acfer 217, ,4.30 Ga) ages are both breccias, these ages probably do not record slow cooling within an undisrupted asteroidal parent body. Instead, the process of breccia formation may have differentially reset the ages of the constituent material, or the differences in their age spectra may arise from mixtures of material that had different ages. Two end-member type situations may be envisioned to explain the age range observed in the R chondrites. The first is if the impact(s) that reset the ages of Acfer 217 and Rumuruti was very early. In this case, the ,170 Ma maximum age difference between these meteorites may have been produced by much deeper burial of Acfer 217 than Rumuruti within an impact-induced thick regolith layer, or within a rubble pile type parent body following parent body re-assembly. The second, preferred scenario is if the impact that reset the age of Acfer 217 was much later than that which reset Rumuruti, then Acfer 217 may have cooled more rapidly within a much thinner regolith layer. In either scenario, the oldest age obtained here, from Rumuruti, provides evidence for relatively early (,4.47 Ga) impact events and breccia formation on the R chondrite parent body. [source]


Plasma polymerization and deposition of glycidyl methacrylate on Si(100) surface for adhesion improvement with polyimide

Abstract Thin polymer films were deposited on Si(100) surfaces by plasma polymerization of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) under different glow discharge conditions. The FT-IR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and amine treatment results suggested that the epoxide functional groups of the deposited films had been preserved to various extents, depending on the plasma deposition conditions. The use of a low radio frequency power (, 5 W) and a relatively high system pressure (100,400 Pa) readily resulted in the deposition of thin films having nearly the same composition of the epoxide functional groups as that of the GMA homopolymer. The plasma-polymerized GMA (PP-GMA) thin films deposited on the Ar plasma-pretreated Si(100) surfaces were retained to a large extent after acetone extraction, suggesting the presence of covalent bonding between the PP-GMA layer and the Si surface. Thermal imidization of the poly(amic acid) precursor of polyimide on the GMA plasma-polymerized Si(100) surface resulted in a strongly adhered polyimide film. The adhesion results further suggested that the GMA polymer had been grafted on the Si(100) surface and the epoxide functional groups had undergone reactive interaction (curing) with the carboxylic and amine groups of the poly(amic acid) during thermal imidization. Adhesion of Pseudomonas aeruginosa ocular isolates to mucin

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to compare the adhesion of Pseudomonas aeruginosa ocular isolates to mucin. An adhesion assay was developed using biotin-labelled P. aeruginosa strains (two corneal ulcer, two acute red eye, one asymptomatic and one standard strains) incubated with porcine gastric mucin immobilized on a nitrocellulose membrane. The adhesion was semiquantified using densitometry. The results showed that all P. aeruginosa strains tested were able to adhere to mucin to various extents with three strains (one corneal ulcer, one acute red eye, one asymptomatic) binding significantly greater than the negative control (P < 0.1). Results suggest that ocular strains of P. aeruginosa strains differ in their adhesion to mucin but this did not correlate with the pathogenic origin of the strain. It is concluded that the adhesion of P. aeruginosa strains to mucin alone may not be a principal determinant of pathogenesis but may be a contributing factor along with other bacterial virulence traits.
