Selected AbstractsRelationship between Relative Aerobic Power and Echocardiographic Characteristics in Male AthletesECHOCARDIOGRAPHY, Issue 9 2007Zsuzsanna Kneffel M.Ed. The relationship between relative aerobic power (rel.VO2max) as a generally accepted indicator of endurance capacity and certain characteristics of the athlete's heart, such as body-size related (relative) left ventricular (LV) diastolic wall thickness (WTd), internal diameter (LVIDd), muscle mass (MM), WTd/IDd, heart rate (HR), fractional shortening (FS) and E/A ratio, were investigated in 346 young males (18,35 years, 291 athletes of various events and 55 nonathletic control subjects). Rel.VO2max was measured by spiroergometry; cardiac characteristics were determined by two-dimensionally guided M-mode and Doppler-echocardiography. When the groups were pooled, correlation of rel.VO2max with the cardiac parameters was significant: LVMM·BSA,1.5= 0.413, LVWTd·BSA,0.5= 0.327, LVIDd·BSA,0.5= 0.292, HR =,0.434, E/A = 0.272 (P < 0.001), but no significant relationship was seen with FS and WTd/IDd. In the endurance trained group, rel. VO2max correlated significantly with LVMM·BSA,1.5, LVWT·BSA,0.5, HR, and E/A, in the ballgame players with LVMM·BSA,1.5, LVWT·BSA,0.5, and E/A, in the power-and-sprint event athletes with HR and E/A. In the control group, no significant relationship was observed. Results indicate that in athletes having higher endurance capacity maximal oxygen consumption depends largely on cardiac condition, while in athletes with a lower endurance capacity it can be limited by peripheral conditions. [source] Cryptococcus neoformans capsule biosynthesis and regulationFEMS YEAST RESEARCH, Issue 8 2004Guilhem Janbon Abstract The capsule is certainly the most prominent virulence factor in Cryptococcus neoformans: acapsular strains are avirulent, and capsular polysaccharides have a deleterious effect on the immune system. Until very recently, very few genes involved in capsule biosynthesis had been identified , and this despite the existence of a detailed body of work concerning the capsule's composition, structure and their regulation by environmental factors. The tremendous development of experimental tools and techniques suited to the study of C. neoformans biology together with the sequencing of three complete genomes have, over the last three years, enabled the identification of a number of proteins which participate directly in biosynthesis of the capsule or which regulate its size. Even though this knowledge is still preliminary, it gives us a clearer picture of the various events needed for biosynthesis of this fascinating structure. [source] Roles of nodal-lefty regulatory loops in embryonic patterning of vertebratesGENES TO CELLS, Issue 11 2001Hou Juan Nodal is a signalling molecule that belongs to the transforming growth factor,, superfamily of proteins, and Lefty proteins are antagonists of Nodal signalling. The nodal and lefty genes form positive and negative regulatory loops that resemble the reaction-diffusion system. As a pair, these genes control various events of vertebrate embryonic patterning, including left-right specification and mesoderm formation. In this review, we will focus on recent studies that have addressed the roles of nodal and lefty in mouse development. [source] Analysis of the 2002 May earthquake sequence in the central Pyrenees, consequences for the evaluation of the seismic risk at Lourdes, FranceGEOPHYSICAL JOURNAL INTERNATIONAL, Issue 3 2004Noalwenn Dubos SUMMARY Three earthquakes of magnitudes 4.6, 4.3 and 3.7 occurred in 2002 May at two locations 20 km from the pilgrimage city of Lourdes in the French Pyrenees. They were well recorded by the permanent Pyrenean seismic networks, by a temporary local network, as well as by accelerometric stations. In order to understand their tectonic contexts, and to come to a better evaluation of the seismic risk at Lourdes, a detailed analysis of these events is performed. The first two events are located south of Lourdes in an area where only a few earthquakes have occurred up to now. Their focal solutions derived from first-motion polarities indicate reverse faulting, with a N110°E strike consistent with the geological structures. 10 aftershocks were recorded and relocated with respect to the main events, benefiting from the waveform similarity of the various events. This analysis reveals that the two main events concern probably the same fault, the second rupture being in the prolongation of the first one, whereas the other small aftershocks are located on fault segments in the vicinity of the hypocentre of the second event. The third large event, located to the SE of Lourdes, involves a normal mechanism with a N120°E plane parallel to the main geological structures. It occurred in a region of intense activity, including in particular an event of maximum macroseismic intensity IX in 1660. The first two events are at the boundary of a large quiet zone. In order to understand the related structural context, a new crustal tomographic model has been computed. It reveals that this quiet zone coincides with a block of high P -velocity. In contrast, the seismicity appears to be stronger at the northern and eastern boundaries of this block. The accelerometric data of the three main events recorded at Lourdes have been used to estimate the maximum peak ground accelerations in this city if a large event occurred, similar to those which damaged the city in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Horizontal accelerations of 0.25 ± 0.07 g are predicted in the frequency domain 1,5 Hz at the location of the Sanctuary for a magnitude 6 event occurring 10 km away from the city. Taking into account the error bars, these values could in some cases exceed those specified by the building codes in this region. Kane Summary Ligation of the T cell receptor for antigen (TCR) and/or costimulatory receptor CD28 results in rapid activation of phosphoinositide-3 kinase (PI-3 kinase). It remains unclear, however, precisely how this activation occurs and also how the newly generated phospholipid products trigger the various events associated with T cell activation. Here we discuss the current understanding of how PI-3 kinase is activated by the TCR and CD28 and what roles its products play in T cell activation. We also review recent advances in understanding the function of Akt in particular, especially its role in CD28 costimulation. Several functional targets of Akt are discussed in this regard: inducible transcription, cell survival, glucose metabolism, and the cellular translational machinery. These pathways have been associated with TCR/CD28 costimulation, and they have also been implicated as targets of Akt. [source] MARKET REACTIONS TO THE PASSAGE OF THE FINANCIAL HOLDING COMPANY ACT IN TAIWANPACIFIC ECONOMIC REVIEW, Issue 4 2008Jane-Sue Wang Abstract. We examine how financial institutions react to various events surrounding the passage of Taiwan's Financial Holding Company Act in June 2001. Empirical results indicate that the financial system experiences significant abnormal returns along the legislative process. Smaller firms have significantly higher abnormal returns, thus lending no support for the hypothesis that larger firms benefit more from the Act. Further analysis shows that the significance of market value is replaced by a significant securities industry effect, thereby consistent with the observation that Taiwan's securities firms are generally smaller in market values and are potential target firms for financial holding companies. [source] The Complex and Diversified Mitochondrial Gene Pool of Berber PopulationsANNALS OF HUMAN GENETICS, Issue 2 2009C. Coudray Summary The mitochondrial DNA variation of 295 Berber-speakers from Morocco (Asni, Bouhria and Figuig) and the Egyptian oasis of Siwa was evaluated by sequencing a portion of the control region (including HVS-I and part of HVS-II) and surveying haplogroup-specific coding region markers. Our findings show that the Berber mitochondrial pool is characterized by an overall high frequency of Western Eurasian haplogroups, a somehow lower frequency of sub-Saharan L lineages, and a significant (but differential) presence of North African haplogroups U6 and M1, thus occupying an intermediate position between European and sub-Saharan populations in PCA analysis. A clear and significant genetic differentiation between the Berbers from Maghreb and Egyptian Berbers was also observed. The first are related to European populations as shown by haplogroup H1 and V frequencies, whereas the latter share more affinities with East African and Nile Valley populations as indicated by the high frequency of M1 and the presence of L0a1, L3i, L4*, and L4b2 lineages. Moreover, haplogroup U6 was not observed in Siwa. We conclude that the origins and maternal diversity of Berber populations are old and complex, and these communities bear genetic characteristics resulting from various events of gene flow with surrounding and migrating populations. [source] Remembering when we last remembered our childhood experiences: Effects of age and context on retrospective metamemory judgmentsAPPLIED COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY, Issue 5 2009Rachel Abenavoli People sometimes exhibit a ,forgot-it-all-along bias' in which they claim that they have gone for months or years without thinking about certain childhood experiences despite recently recalling those memories. The present study examines memory for memories of childhood experiences, expanding on prior work by using manipulations that require greater reflection when thinking about remembered experiences and when making retrospective metamemory judgments. Age-related differences in memory-for-memory accuracy were also examined. Young (18,20) and older adults (63,89) recalled various events while focusing on emotional or perceptual details for some, and several weeks later were asked to indicate the last time they had remembered various events. Results showed that young adults were more accurate than older adults overall, though both age groups still exhibited a forgot-it-all-along bias that was reduced but not eliminated when a contextual reminder was provided. [source] The Relationships between Knowledge Structures and Appraisals of Economically Disadvantaged AdolescentsAPPLIED PSYCHOLOGY, Issue 4 2010Gülden Güvenç The study's objective was to test adolescents' self-regulation based upon Cervone, Shadel, Smith, and Fiori's (2006) knowledge and appraisal personality architecture model. Self-regulation was defined as the relationships between knowledge structures (enduring mental representations of the world) and appraisal processes (dynamic meanings constructed to evaluate various events). In our study, the knowledge variables were authoritarianism and locus of control while appraisal variables were categorized as personal orientation (coping, communication, self-esteem) and relational orientation (perspective taking, empathy, prosocial behavior tendency). The purpose of the study was to identify the relationships between these variables and compare gender differences for each indicator. The participants were 246 adolescents (125 males and 121 females) whose ages ranged between 12 and 15 and who were the inhabitants of a poor urban neighborhood in Ankara, Turkey. The results showed that external locus of control and authoritarianism were not related, while the former was negatively related to both personal and relational orientations and authoritarianism was positively related to only relational orientation. Boys' external locus of control was higher than girls', whereas girls' scores exceeded boys' in self-reliant coping with stress, open communication, and interpersonal reactivity. No gender differences were observed for authoritarianism, prosocial behavior tendency, and self-esteem. Notre projet était d'estimer l'autorégulation des adolescents à partir du modèle structurale de connaissances et d'évaluation de la personnalité de Cervone, Shadel, Smith et Fiori (2006). L'autorégulation recouvre les relations entre les connaissances (les représentations stables du monde) et les processus d'évaluation (les significations dynamiques élaborées pour apprécier différents évènements). Dans notre recherche, les variables de connaissances étaient l'autoritarisme et le locus of control tandis que les variables d'évaluation étaient regroupées sous les rubriques « orientation personnelle » (faire-face, communication, estime de soi) et « orientation relationnelle » (changement de point de vue, empathie, tendance à adopter un comportement favorable aux autres). Ce travail cherchait à identifier les relations entre ces dimensions et à comparer les différences dues au genre pour chacun des indicateurs. Les sujets étaient 246 adolescents (125 garçons et 121 filles) entre douze et quinze ans qui habitent un quartier pauvre d'Ankara (Turquie). Les résultats montrent qu'un locus of control externe et l'autoritarisme ne sont pas en rapport, alors que le premier est corrélé négativement aux orientations personnelle et relationnelle ; l'autoritarisme n'est lié positivement qu'à l'orientation relationnelle. Le locus of control externe des garçons est supérieur à celui des filles alors que les scores des filles dépassent ceux des garçons dans le traitement autonome du stress, la communication libre et la sensibilité interpersonnelle. Les deux genres se rejoignent sur l'autoritarisme, la tendance à adopter un comportement favorable aux autres et l'estime de soi. [source] |
