Community mental healthcare in England: associations between service organisation and quality of life

Abstract The present authors set out to explore the relationship between different forms of service organisation and quality of life (QoL) for service users. Four mental health trusts and their corresponding social services departments were recruited to exemplify: (1) high and low levels of integration between health and social services; and (2) high and low levels of targeting at users with severe mental health problems. The authors used the Lancashire Quality of Life Profile, and chose their sample size to be able to detect a difference of 0.5 in subjective satisfaction scales. Analysis of covariance was used to investigate the simultaneous impact of variables representing user characteristics, objective and subjective QoL, and service organisation. Two hundred and sixty users selected at random from the active caseloads of mental health services in the four districts were interviewed at time 1 and 232 people were interviewed 6 months later (time 2). No bias was detected in the non-respondents at time 2. The authors found few differences between districts. As in other similar studies, QoL seemed to be stable for the whole sample over time. In 6 months, general satisfaction with leisure increased and the number of people who had been in hospital fell. Negative affect score was the only variable found to be associated with subjective QoL, and no predictors of objective QoL were identified. There was some evidence of better objective outcomes for people in receipt of integrated mental health services. They socialised more, and seemed to have less difficulty accessing police and legal services. The results also suggest that interventions targeted at negative affect could have benefits for subjective QoL. [source]


Do nutrition labels improve dietary outcomes?,

Abstract The disclosure of nutritional characteristics of most packaged foods became mandatory in the United States with the implementation of the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act (NLEA) in 1994. Under the NLEA regulations, a ,Nutrition Facts' panel displays information on nutrients such as calories, total and saturated fats, cholesterol, and sodium in a standardized format. By providing nutrition information in a credible, distinctive, and easy-to-read format, the new label was expected to help consumers choose healthier, more nutritious diets. This paper examines whether the disclosure of nutrition information through the mandatory labels impacted consumer diets. Assessing the dietary effects of labeling is problematic due to the confounding of the label effect with unobserved label user characteristics. This self-selection problem is addressed by exploiting the fact that the NLEA exempts away-from-home foods from mandatory labeling. Difference-in-differences models that account for zero away-from-home intakes suggest that the labels increase fiber and iron intakes of label users compared with label nonusers. In comparison, a model that does not account for self-selection implies significant label effects for all but two of the 13 nutrients that are listed on the label. Cross-validation of neural network applications for automatic new topic identification

The purpose of this study is to provide results from experiments designed to investigate the cross-validation of an artificial neural network application to automatically identify topic changes in Web search engine user sessions by using data logs of different Web search engines for training and testing the neural network. Sample data logs from the FAST and Excite search engines are used in this study. The results of the study show that identification of topic shifts and continuations on a particular Web search engine user session can be achieved with neural networks that are trained on a different Web search engine data log. Although FAST and Excite search engine users differ with respect to some user characteristics (e.g., number of queries per session, number of topics per session), the results of this study demonstrate that both search engine users display similar characteristics as they shift from one topic to another during a single search session. The key finding of this study is that a neural network that is trained on a selected data log could be universal; that is, it can be applicable on all Web search engine transaction logs regardless of the source of the training data log. Information source horizons and source preferences of environmental activists: A social phenomenological approach

This study focuses on the ways in which people define their source preferences in the context of seeking orienting information for nonwork purposes. The conceptual framework of the study combines ideas drawn from social phenomenology and information-seeking studies. The study utilizes Alfred Schutz's model describing the ways in which actors structure everyday knowledge into regions of decreasing relevance. It is assumed that this structuring based on the actor's interest at hand is also reflected in the ways in which an actor prefers information sources and channels. The concept of information source horizon is used to elicit articulations of source preferences. The empirical part of the study draws on interviews with 20 individuals active in environmental issues. Printed media (newspapers), the Internet, and broadcast media (radio, television) were preferred in seeking for orienting information. The major source preferences were content of information, and availability and accessibility. Usability of information sources, user characteristics such as media habits, and situational factors were mentioned less frequently as preference criteria. [source]
