Selected AbstractsEvaluating transformative practice in the U.S. Postal Service REDRESS programCONFLICT RESOLUTION QUARTERLY, Issue 3 2010Tina Nabatchi Interest in transformative mediation is growing, yet there are few tools with which to assess mediators' use of the transformative model. This study presents a novel way of examining transformative mediation in practice. It triangulates data from training and screening processes and surveys of both mediators and participants to determine whether mediators in the U.S. Postal Service REDRESS program were correctly using transformative mediation. The results indicate that during the period of the study REDRESS mediators were in fact engaged in transformative practice. Such triangulation of data may be a useful approach to assessing transformative practice in other organizations. [source] Successful Treatment of a Cosmetic Tattoo Using a Combination of LasersDERMATOLOGIC SURGERY, Issue 1 2004Karen Rebecca Suchin MD Background. Cosmetic tattoos are becoming more popular and are often composed of several colors. Tattoo pigments containing ferric oxide and titanium dioxide can change to a blue-black color after exposure to Q-switched lasers that can be permanent. Objective. Using a patient who presented with rouge tattoos on the cheeks as an example, we describe a useful approach to laser treatment of cosmetic tattoos. Methods. Test areas were done with the Q-switched Nd:YAG at both 532 and 1064 nm and with the pulsed-dye laser at 595 nm. Results. Although an immediate blue-black color change occurred after treatment with the Nd:YAG at 532 and 1064 nm, sequential treatments at 1064 nm produced a near complete clearance of the tattoos. The pulsed-dye laser was used to remove subtle pink tones. Conclusion. Performing small test areas before complete treatment and using several laser wavelengths throughout the course of therapy are essential to the successful treatment of cosmetic tattoos. [source] Localization of Indian hedgehog and PTH/PTHrP receptor expression in relation to chondrocyte proliferation during mouse bone developmentDEVELOPMENT GROWTH & DIFFERENTIATION, Issue 2 2005Helen E. MacLean We have developed a useful approach to examine the pattern of gene expression in comparison to cell proliferation, using double in situ hybridization and immunofluorescence. Using this system, we examined the expression of Indian hedgehog (Ihh) and PTH/PTHrP receptor (PPR) mRNA in relation to chondrocyte proliferation during embryonic mouse bone development. Both genes are expressed strongly in prehypertrophic and early hypertrophic chondrocytes, and there is a strong correlation between upregulation of both Ihh and PPR expression and chondrocyte cell cycle arrest. At embryonic day (E14.5), PPR mRNA upregulation begins in the columnar chondrocytes just prior to cell cycle exit, but at later time points expression is only observed in the postproliferative region. In contrast, Ihh mRNA expression overlaps slightly with the region of columnar proliferating chondrocytes at all stages. This study provides further evidence that in the developing growth plate, cell cycle exit and upregulation of Ihh and PPR mRNA expression are coupled. [source] Internet forums: a self-help approach for individuals with schizophrenia?ACTA PSYCHIATRICA SCANDINAVICA, Issue 6 2005H. Haker Objective:, To study if and how online self-help forums for individuals with schizophrenia are used. Method:, We analysed 1200 postings of 576 users in 12 international schizophrenia forums regarding communicative skills [fields of interest and self-help mechanisms (SHM)]. Results:, The forums were predominantly used by affected individuals, few relatives or friends. The fields of interest of the users concern daily problems of the illness like symptoms and emotional involvement with the illness. Self-help mechanisms mostly used are disclosure and providing information. Emotional interaction e.g. empathy or gratitude were comparatively rare. Conclusion:, Individuals suffering from schizophrenia participate in online self-help forums using the same SHM, discussing similar topics as do individuals with other psychiatric disorders as well as not affected relatives and caregivers. Therefore, this tool seems to be a useful approach to cope with alienation and isolation, albeit only a small number of schizophrenia forums are found in the Internet. [source] A parallel multigrid solver for high-frequency electromagnetic field analyses with small-scale PC clusterELECTRONICS & COMMUNICATIONS IN JAPAN, Issue 9 2008Kuniaki Yosui Abstract Finite element analyses of electromagnetic fields are commonly used for designing various electronic devices. The scale of the analyses becomes larger and larger, therefore, a fast linear solver is needed to solve linear equations arising from the finite element method. Since a multigrid solver is the fastest linear solver for these problems, parallelization of a multigrid solver is quite a useful approach. From the viewpoint of industrial applications, an effective usage of a small-scale PC cluster is important due to initial cost for introducing parallel computers. In this paper, a distributed parallel multigrid solver for a small-scale PC cluster is developed. In high-frequency electromagnetic analyses, a special block Gauss, Seidel smoother is used for the multigrid solver instead of general smoothers such as a Gauss, Seidel or Jacobi smoother in order to improve the convergence rate. The block multicolor ordering technique is applied to parallelize the smoother. A numerical example shows that a 3.7-fold speed-up in computational time and a 3.0-fold increase in the scale of the analysis were attained when the number of CPUs was increased from one to five. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Separation, detection, and quantification of the RT-PCR products were accomplished using the Agilent 2100 bioanalyzer in conjunction with the DNA 1000 LabChip kit. After 0 and 12 h of enrichment, it was possible to generate a linear standard curve between the amount of cells and amplicon concentration of RT-PCR and PCR products. Using this method, cell diminution was verified in samples of orange juice treated with a natural inhibitor (Sapindus saponaria), determining the persistence of viable cells. Semiquantitative RT-PCR using the Agilent 2100 bioanalyzer is a potentially useful approach for rapid in vitro determination of A. acidoterrestris and monitoring of inhibitor susceptibility for the orange juice-producing industry. [source] Concept Acquisition within the Context of an AS Media Studies CourseENGLISH IN EDUCATION, Issue 2 2003Vivien Whelpton Abstract This article explores the means by which students' concept formation can be promoted and outlines findings from an action research project undertaken with a class of 17-year-old AS Media Studies students as a submission for the British Film Institute's MA Certificate in Media Education in 2001. It argues that academic concepts can neither be allowed to develop spontaneously nor be directly taught, but that indirect methods of teacher intervention can be found. It also examines the relationship between thought and language and argues that, while contact with academic discourse can be alienating, its features include a fluency which the handling of complex and abstract ideas requires, particularly in the written mode. The writer suggests that, while this discourse cannot be explicitly taught or learned, modelling techniques may offer a useful approach. [source] Detection of clastogenic and aneugenic damage in newborn ratsENVIRONMENTAL AND MOLECULAR MUTAGENESIS, Issue 5 2006Ion Udroiu Abstract The last 25 years have seen an ever-growing use of the erythrocyte micronucleus test for measuring damage to mammalian chromosomes in vivo. In addition, staining micronuclei with antikinetochore antibodies from CREST serum discriminates aneugenic from clastogenic damage. The use of the micronucleus test in rats, however, has been problematic because the spleen of adult rats efficiently removes micronucleated erythrocytes from the blood. In the present study, we have treated 5-day-old rats with either X-rays (a clastogen) or vinblastine (an aneugen) and measured micronuclei in erythrocytes from the blood and liver. Each treatment increased the frequency of micronuclei in both tissues, with the percentages of CREST-staining micronuclei reflecting the mechanism of micronucleus induction by the two agents. The results indicate that performing the micronucleus assay in the liver and peripheral blood of 5-day-old rats may be a useful approach for detecting the in vivo genotoxicity of chemical and physical agents. [source] Induction of cytochrome P4501A in African brown house snake (Lamprophis fuliginosus) primary hepatocytesENVIRONMENTAL TOXICOLOGY & CHEMISTRY, Issue 2 2006Markus Hecker Abstract Ahough there have been numerous sudies involving fish, birds, and mammals, little is known about the response of the cytochrome P4501A system of snakes to halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons (HAHs). The present study describes the induction of ethoxyresorufin- O -deethylase (EROD) in primary hepatocytes of the African brown house snake (Lamprophis fuliginosus). Hepatocytes were exposed in multiwell plates to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo- p -dioxin (TCDD) and four different non- ortho -substi-tuted coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs 77, 81, 126, and 169). Exposure to TCDD and PCB 126 resulted in a dose-dependent increase in EROD activity, with maximum inducible EROD activities of 177 ± 56 (mean ± SEM) and 101.1 ± 55 pmol/min/mg protein for TCDD and PCB 126, respectively. None of the other PCBs caused a measurable induction of EROD, which suggests reduced inducibility of snake hepatocytes compared to some vertebrate taxa. Median effective concentrations (EC50s) were 0.16 ± 0.03 nM for TCDD and 8.25 ± 4.14 nM for PCB 126. The relative potency (REP20,80) range for PCB 126 was 0.044 to 0.046. Compared to results from in vitro systems using other vertebrate species, both the maximum inducibility and the REPs estimated for L. fuliginosus were within the same range as those reported for mammals and the more sensitive bird species but were greater than the values reported for most fish species. In conclusion, induction of EROD activity in primary hepatocytes appears to be a useful approach for evaluating the dioxin-like potencies of aryl hydrocarbon,receptor agonists in snakes. The test system offers a method for rapid screening of reptilian responsiveness to these compounds using smaller numbers of organisms than with in vivo studies, an important consideration for many declining reptile species. [source] Ecdysteroid synthesis and imaginal disc development in the midge Chironomus riparius as biomarkers for endocrine effects of tributyltinENVIRONMENTAL TOXICOLOGY & CHEMISTRY, Issue 5 2002Torsten Hahn Abstract Acute effects of the endocrine disruptor bis (tri- n -butyltin) oxide (TBTO) on molting-hormone biosynthesis and imaginaldisc development were investigated in larvae of the midge Chironomus riparius (Meigen). Ecdysteroid synthesis was measured by 24-h incubation of molting-hormone-synthesizing tissues (prothoracic glands) in vitro with or without the addition of TBTO. The amount of ecdysteroids produced was analyzed by radioimmunoassay. Developmental effects in vivo were investigated by determining the developmental phase of the genital imaginal discs before and after a 48-h exposure to TBTO in water. Sex-specific effects were found with both endpoints. Ecdysteroid synthesis was significantly reduced (analysis of variance [ANOVA], p , 0.005) in female larvae at all concentrations (TBTO-Sn at 50, 500, and 5,000 ng/L), whereas a significant elevation of the biosynthesis rate occurred in male larvae in the 500-ng/L treatment (ANOVA, p , 0.05). In vivo experiments with development of the genital imaginal disc within a 48-h exposure period revealed a significantly slower development in female larvae and a significantly faster development in male larvae (contingency tables, p , 0.001) at all concentrations tested (TBTO-Sn at 10, 50, 200, and 1,000 ng/L). These results partly coincided with the in vitro effects on molting-hormone synthesis. The 48-h median lethal concentration (LC50) was 25 ,g/L (20,30 ,g/L 95% confidence intervals). The combination of in vitro and in vivo methods has proven to be a useful approach for the detection of endocrine effects of TBTO in C. riparius at levels 2,000-fold below the LC50 value. High sensitivity and short test duration suggest that chironomids may have potential as freshwater sentinel organisms for endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Verrengia Guerrero Abstract The uptake of anthropogenic chemicals by benthic bivalves may occur through the water phase and also by the ingestion of particles from both the suspended matter and bottom sediments. Many chemicals sorb to sediments and, subsequently, are released in the digestive tract of animals. The assessment of sediment-bound chemicals has been difficult because of the complexity of the association between these chemicals and natural particles. To simplify this complexity, we previously devised a test system using artificial particles with known chemical structures. In the present work, we improved this experimental design by adding humic materials as a source of organic matter. Bioassays were conducted by exposing the fingernail clam Sphaerium corneum to sublethal levels of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in the presence or absence of the artificial particles, treated with or without a commercial preparation of humic acids. The results showed that the bioavailability and bioaccumulation could be explained on the basis of the interactions of PCP with the active groups and/or the backbone of the resins, both in systems with or without humic acids. This model may constitute a useful approach to modeling and predicting the uptake and accumulation of chemicals bound to natural sediments. [source] Amino acids in Quaternary soil horizons from southwest PolandEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF SOIL SCIENCE, Issue 2 2003A. Szponar Summary Aminostratigraphy has proved to be a useful approach for dating fossils from the Quaternary. In these studies the amino acids in Quaternary soil formations were determined in an attempt to establish their stratigraphical relationships and relative ages. The sampling sites are in the southwest of Poland, in the Trzebnickie Hills. Three samples of fossil soils and two of recent soils were analysed. The absolute age of the soil samples was estimated by radiocarbon dating. We found that the total amount of amino acids decreased with the increasing age of soil. The smallest amounts of amino acids were found in the oldest fossil soil of Denekamp (Vistulian) age dated 29 600 ± 760 years bp. A sample of recent loess soil contained the most total amino acids, whereas the fossil soil of Lower Atlantic age, dated 3540 ± 230 years bp, was intermediate in respect of the total amount of amino acids, oxidation state and degree of biochemical transformation. Neutral amino acids formed a majority of all the amino acids studied. The method we describe could be useful in relative chronostratigraphical identification of fossil soils. [source] Monitoring Subsurface Contamination Using Tree BranchesGROUND WATER MONITORING & REMEDIATION, Issue 1 2007Gayathri Gopalakrishnan This paper proposes a method of assessing the distribution of chlorinated solvents in soil and ground water using tree branches. Sampling branches is a potentially more cost-effective and easier method than sampling tree cores, with less risk of damage to the tree. This approach was tested at Argonne National Laboratory, where phytoremediation is being used to remove tetrachloroethene (PCE), trichloroethene (TCE), and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) from soil and ground water. The phytoremediation system consists of shallow-rooted willows planted in an area with contaminated soil and deep-rooted poplars planted in an area with clean soil and contaminated ground water. Branch samples were collected from 126 willows and 120 poplars. Contaminant concentrations from 31 soil borings and six monitoring wells were compared to those from branches of adjacent trees. Regression equations with correlation coefficients of at least 0.89 were obtained, which were found to be chemical specific. Kriged profiles of TCE concentration based on soil and willow branch data were developed and showed good agreement. Profiles based on ground water data could not be developed due to lack of sufficient monitoring wells for a meaningful statistical analysis. An analytical model was used to simulate TCE concentrations in tree branches from soil concentrations; the diffusion coefficient for TCE in the tree was used as the fitting parameter and the best-fit value was two orders of magnitude greater than literature values. This work indicates that tree branch sampling is a useful approach to assess contaminant distribution and potentially to determine where to locate monitoring wells or perform detailed soil analysis. Further research is necessary prior to using this method as a quantitative monitoring tool for soil and ground water. [source] Characterization and Application of a New Monoclonal Antibody with High Specificity for Helicobacter hepaticusHELICOBACTER, Issue 1 2009Yoshihiro Fukuda Abstract Background and Aims:, Infection with Helicobacter hepaticus is suggested to play a role in the pathogenesis of chronic liver disease in humans. However, reactive antigens among Helicobacter species make the development of an H. hepaticus ELISA test with high specificity difficult. A new monoclonal antibody from a hybridoma clone (HRII-51) showed high specificity to H. hepaticus without cross-reaction to other gastrointestinal bacteria. Methods:, The molecular weight of HRII-51 immunoreactive antigen was examined by Western blot of H. hepaticus probed with the monoclonal antibody HRII-51. A HRII-51-immunoreactive antigen capture ELISA was prepared in which the specific antigen was anchored by HRII-51-immobilized ELISA plate. Accuracy of HRII-51 antigen capture ELISA was examined using sera obtained from mice inoculated with Helicobacter species. Specificity of HRII-51 antigen capture ELISA was compared to that of H. hepaticus antigen-based ELISA using human sera with absorption by H. pylori cell lysate. Results:, HRII-51 immunoreactive antigen had a molecular weight of 15 kDa. Sensitivity and specificity of HRII-51 antigen capture ELISA were 87.0% and 97.6% in mice inoculated with Helicobacter species. In human sera, modification of the results by absorption with H. pylori lysate was smaller in HRII-51 antigen capture ELISA comparing with H. hepaticus -antigen-based ELISA. Conclusion:, Use of the HRII-51 antigen capture ELISA would be a useful approach for the serodiagnosis of H. hepaticus infection in both experimental animals and humans. [source] Bioaccessibility studies of ferro-chromium alloy particles for a simulated inhalation scenario: A comparative study with the pure metals and stainless steelINTEGRATED ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT AND MANAGEMENT, Issue 3 2010Klara Midander Abstract The European product safety legislation, REACH, requires that companies that manufacture, import, or use chemicals demonstrate safe use and high level of protection of their products placed on the market from a human health and environmental perspective. This process involves detailed assessment of potential hazards for various toxicity endpoints induced by the use of chemicals with a minimum use of animal testing. Such an assessment requires thorough understanding of relevant exposure scenarios including material characteristics and intrinsic properties and how, for instance, physical and chemical properties change from the manufacturing phase, throughout use, to final disposal. Temporary or permanent adverse health effects induced by particles depend either on their shape or physical characteristics, and/or on chemical interactions with the particle surface upon human exposure. Potential adverse effects caused by the exposure of metal particles through the gastrointestinal system, the pulmonary system, or the skin, and their subsequent potential for particle dissolution and metal release in contact with biological media, show significant gaps of knowledge. In vitro bioaccessibility testing at conditions of relevance for different exposure scenarios, combined with the generation of a detailed understanding of intrinsic material properties and surface characteristics, are in this context a useful approach to address aspects of relevance for accurate risk and hazard assessment of chemicals, including metals and alloys and to avoid the use of in vivo testing. Alloys are essential engineering materials in all kinds of applications in society, but their potential adverse effects on human health and the environment are very seldom assessed. Alloys are treated in REACH as mixtures of their constituent elements, an approach highly inappropriate because intrinsic properties of alloys generally are totally different compared with their pure metal components. A large research effort was therefore conducted to generate quantitative bioaccessibility data for particles of ferro-chromium alloys compared with particles of the pure metals and stainless steel exposed at in vitro conditions in synthetic biological media of relevance for particle inhalation and ingestion. All results are presented combining bioaccessibility data with aspects of particle characteristics, surface composition, and barrier properties of surface oxides. Iron and chromium were the main elements released from ferro-chromium alloys upon exposure in synthetic biological media. Both elements revealed time-dependent release processes. One week exposures resulted in very small released particle fractions being less than 0.3% of the particle mass at acidic conditions and less than 0.001% in near pH-neutral media. The extent of Fe released from ferro-chromium alloy particles was significantly lower compared with particles of pure Fe, whereas Cr was released to a very low and similar extent as from particles of pure Cr and stainless steel. Low release rates are a result of a surface oxide with passive properties predominantly composed of chromium(III)-rich oxides and silica and, to a lesser extent, of iron(II,III)oxides. Neither the relative bulk alloy composition nor the surface composition can be used to predict or assess the extent of metals released in different synthetic biological media. Alaiya Abstract Ovarian tumors range from benign to aggressive malignant tumors, including an intermediate class referred to as borderline carcinoma. The prognosis of the disease is strongly dependent on tumor classification, where patients with borderline tumors have much better prognosis than patients with carcinomas. We here describe the use of hierarchical clustering analysis of quantitative protein expression data for classification of this type of tumor. An accurate classification was not achieved using an unselected set of 1,584 protein spots for clustering analysis. Different approaches were used to select spots that were differentially expressed between tumors of different malignant potential and to use these sets of spots for classification. When sets of proteins were selected that differentiated benign and malignant tumors, borderline tumors clustered in the benign group. This is consistent with the biologic properties of these tumors. Our results indicate that hierarchical clustering analysis is a useful approach for analysis of protein profiles and show that this approach can be used for differential diagnosis of ovarian carcinomas and borderline tumors. © 2002 Wiley-Liss, Inc. Yardan Summary Objective:, B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) is a neurohormone secreted from cardiac ventricles in response to ventricular strain. The aim of present study was to evaluate the role of BNP in the diagnosis of the right ventricular (RV) dysfunction in acute pulmonary embolism (PE). Methods:, BNP levels were measured in patients with acute PE as diagnosed by high probability lung scan or positive spiral computed tomography. All patients underwent standard echocardiography and blood tests during the second hour of the diagnosis. Results:, Forty patients diagnosed as acute PE (mean age, 60.4 ± 13.2 years; 62.5% women) were enrolled in this study. Patients with RV dysfunction had significantly higher BNP levels than patients without RV dysfunction (426 ± 299.42 pg/ml vs. 39.09 ± 25.22 pg/ml, p < 0.001). BNP-discriminated patients with or without RV dysfunction (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, 0.943; 95% CI, 0.863,1.022). BNP > 90 pg/ml was associated with a risk ratio of 165 (95% CI, 13.7,1987.2) for the diagnosis of RV dysfunction. There was a significant correlation between RV end-diastolic diameter and BNP (r = 0.89, p < 0.001). Sixteen patients (40%) were diagnosed as having low-risk PE, 19 patients (47.5%) with submassive PE and five patients (12.5%) with massive PE. The mean BNP was 39.09 ± 25.2, 378.4 ± 288.4 and 609.2 ± 279.2 pg/ml in each group respectively. Conclusion:, Measurement of BNP levels may be a useful approach in diagnosis of RV dysfunction in patients with acute PE. The possibility of RV dysfunction in patients with plasma BNP levels > 90 pg/ml should be strongly considered. [source] A tutorial on using genetic algorithms for the design of network topologyINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF NETWORK MANAGEMENT, Issue 4 2006Bassam Al-Bassam The design of network topology is an important part of network design, since network topology is directly associated with network operational behavior, capacity, reliability, and cost. This paper is a tutorial paper concerned with illustrating how the optimization capabilities of genetic algorithms can be used to design suitable network topologies considering basic topology problems. Simple genetic algorithms have been developed for the topology problem of mesh networks, considering single node and single link failure tolerance. The algorithms are based on criteria of two important measures: minimizing the length of communication links; and minimizing traffic flow through these links for given traffic loads. The first measure contributes to minimizing the cost of cabling, while the second measure contributes to minimizing the cost of link capacity. The work provides a useful approach and tools to network students and professionals concerned with the topology design of backbone networks. However, much of this discussion is centred on China's strength as a centre of manufacturing and exports. The increase in affluence in pockets of China's 1.3 billion residents has also been the focus of firms interested in this large and virtually untapped consumer market. However, relatively little attention has been given to this market as potential sources of tourists. The purpose of this study was to profile the important visitor segments from mainland China who had previously visited, had the intention to visit or desired to visit Hong Kong,a destination traditionally priced and positioned for Western markets. Based on a sample of 470 Chinese from three cities in the mainland, the distinctive characteristics of tourists who had previously visited Hong Kong and who had strong intentions or interest to visit in the future were identified. It is hoped that this information will help tourism marketing professionals not only gain insights as to the potential of China as a source of visitors, but also highlight a useful approach to the market segmentation process. [source] Prophylactic intravesical instillation of mitomycin C and cytosine arabinoside for prevention of recurrent bladder tumors following surgery for upper urinary tract tumors: A prospective randomized studyINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF UROLOGY, Issue 5 2001Naotaka Sakamoto Abstract Background: A recurrence of bladder tumors following surgery for transitional cell carcinoma of the upper urinary tract is not rarely observed. A prospective randomized study was conducted to examine the significance of prophylactic intravesical instillation of mitomycin C (MMC) and cytosine arabinoside (Ara-C) to prevent recurrent bladder tumors after surgery for superficial transitional cell carcinoma of the upper urinary tract. Methods: The patients were randomized into an instillation group, who received postoperative intravesical instillation of MMC (20 mg) and Ara-C (200 mg) 28 times over a period of 2 years, and a non-instillation group. The non-recurrence rate was then compared between the groups. Results: Of the 27 patients registered, 25 patients (13 with instillation and 12 without instillation) were able to be evaluated, with a median follow-up period of 45 months. The non-recurrence rate of bladder tumors in the instillation group was higher than that in the non-instillation group. Although the difference was not statistically significant, the P -value (P = 0.079) demonstrated a strong trend. When any possible bias was allowed for a multivariate analysis, the difference was almost significant (P = 0.0567). No patients withdrew from this study due to any side-effects. Conclusion: The postoperative instillation of MMC and Ara-C may be a useful approach for reducing the recurrence of bladder tumors after surgery for upper urinary tract tumors. Lime stabilization especially improves the strength and the workability of the clay soil. In addition, lime improvement provides more resistance to the soil structure and to the effect of weather on the soil structure. This study has investigated lime stabilization of soft clay and the possibility of utilizing waste rock powder produced in crusher plants as a supplemental material for lime stabilization in order to increase the strength of the soil structure. The purpose of the study was to apply the results especially in irrigation projects in order to avoid the problems of soft clay on irrigation structures in Sri Lanka. However, the results and conclusions can be considered for other regions, where the same type of soft clay problems exists. The Dutch Oostvaardersplassen (OVP) soft clay, which has a high plasticity, low shear strength and high natural water content, was chosen for the investigations. The results of unconfined compressive strength for different water contents of clay and also for different lime and waste rock powder contents show an excellent increase in strength and workability. The waste rock powder proved to increase the effect of lime stabilization. The strength improvement caused by waste rock powder is more significant for those soils which have a low clay content. Since in irrigation projects a wide range of clay soils exist, this investigation may be useful to utilize waste rock powder in order to improve the quality and the durability of the foundation of irrigation structures in the long run. Therefore the application of lime and rock material improvement on soft clay in irrigation projects may be a useful approach to stabilize soft soils and improve medium-scale shallow foundation irrigation structures and road and canal embankments, including repairing canal leaks. It has also been found that by applying this method in irrigation projects in Sri Lanka, the stabilization cost for structures on soft clay can be significantly reduced compared to other methods. Spécialement la stabilisation de chaux améliore la force et la maniabilité de la terre argileuse. De plus l'amélioration de chaux fournit plus de résistance à la structure de la terre avec l'effet du temps sur la structure de la terre pendant les conditions atmosphériques différentes. Dans cette étude on a examiné la stabilisation de chaux dans l'argile molle et la possibilité de utiliser des déchets de pierre pulvérisée, obtenus par pulvériser des usines, comme une matérielle supplémentaire pour la stabilisation de chaux afin que la force de la structure de la terre s'améliore. L'objective de cette étude était d'appliquer les résultats spécialement dans des projets d'irrigation pour éviter des problèmes de l'argile molle dans des structures d'irrigation en Sri Lanka. Les résultats et les conclusions peuvent être considérés pour d'autres régions, ayant le même problème de l'argile molle. Les Oostvaarderplassen (OVP) en Hollande ont de l'argile molle ayant une plasticité haute, une résistance au cisaillement basse et un haut pourcentage de l'eau naturelle. C'est pour ça les Oostvaardersplassen ont été choisis pour accomplir la recherche. Les résultats de la force de pression indéfinie pour des teneurs en eau différents dans l'argile, aussi pour les teneurs en chaux différents et des déchets de pierres pulvérisées montrent une augmentation excellente de la force et de la maniabilité. Les déchets de pierre pulvérisée se révèlent d'augmenter l'effet de la stabilisation de chaux. L'amélioration de la force, causée par les déchets de pierre pulvérisée, est plus significative pour ces terres ayant un teneur d'argile bas. Parce que les projets d'irrigation ont beaucoup de la terre d'argile cette recherche peut être utile pour user des déchets de pierre pulvérisée pour améliorer la qualité et la durabilité de la fondation des structures d'irrigation à long terme. C'est pourquoi l'application du matériel de chaux et de pierre sur de l'argile molle dans des projets d'irrigation peut être une approche utile pour stabiliser des terres molles et peut améliorer des structures de fondations d'irrigation dans des eaux pas profondes, dans des remblais de chemins et de canaux, inclus dans des réparations des fuites de canaux. Aussi on a révélé qu'en appliquant ce méthode dans des projets d'irrigation en Sri Lanka les coûts de la stabilisation des structures sur de l'argile molle peuvent être réduits d'une manière importante comparée avec d'autres méthodes. Raboudi Abstract:, In Tunisia, four major aphid species have been identified based on adult female's morphological characters: Aphis gossypii Glover, Aphis craccivora Koch, Myzus persicae Sluzer and Macrosiphum euphorbiae Thomas. Species identification at individual collection sites is often difficult because adults are much fewer in number than larvae which are not so easy to distinguish morphologically. We therefore set up an experiment to determine if cuticular hydrocarbon phenotypes and mitochondrial DNA haplotypes could be used to distinguish such sympatric species. Results showed that each species had an unique cuticular hydrocarbon phenotype and mitochondrial cytochrome b sequence. Cytochrome b restriction fragment-length polymorphism markers, especially DdeI, identified in this sudy constitute a relatively simple and useful approach to distinguish the four species even at the nymphal stage. For this purpose, rats were divided into three groups: control, ultraviolet (UV) and ultraviolet + quercetin (UV + Q). The UV and UV + Q groups were irradiated for 4 h a day with UVA light (1.25 mW cm2) during periods of 3, 6 and 9 days. Quercetin (50 mg kg,1 body wt.) was administered intraperitoneally in the UV + Q group rats before irradiation periods. Blood was taken 3, 6 and 9 days post-treatment. Plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) levels significantly increased after 9 days of daily exposure to UVA. Whole blood glutathione (GSH) levels significantly declined after 3,9 days of irradiation. Glutathione peroxidase activity on days 6 and 9 and glutathione reductase activities on days 3, 6 and 9 post-irradiation were diminished significantly. Superoxide dismutase and catalase activities decreased significantly 3,9 days post-irradiation. The administration of quercetin before the 9-day period of irradiation significantly reduced the increase in plasma MDA value. Whole blood GSH levels significantly decreased with the administration of quercetin on all days. Quercetin significantly increased antioxidant enzymes diminished by UVA irradiation. Exposure of rats to UVA light leads to oxidative stress, reflected by increased MDA and reduced antioxidant enzyme levels. We show that 1 month of hPTH(1-34) treatment extends the bone-forming surface, increases mineral apposition rate, and initiates modeling-based formation. Introduction: Iliac crest biopsy, with histomorphometric evaluation, provides important information about cellular activity in bone. However, to obtain longitudinal information, repeat biopsies must be performed. In this study, we show the capability to obtain short-term longitudinal information on bone formation in a single biopsy using a novel, quadruple labeling technique. Materials and Methods: Two tetracycline labels were administered using a standard 3 days on, 12 days off, 3 days on format. Four weeks later, the tetracycline labeling was repeated using the same schedule but with a different tetracycline that can be distinguished from the first by its color under fluorescent light. Iliac crest biopsies were performed 1 week later and prepared undecalcified for histomorphometry. Indices of bone formation 1 month apart were measured and calculated using the two sets of labels. We used this method to investigate the early effects of teriparatide [hPTH(1-34)] treatment on bone formation. The results were compared with those from a group of control subjects who were quadruple-labeled, but did not receive hPTH(1-34). Results: Treatment with hPTH(1-34) dramatically stimulated bone formation on cancellous and endocortical surfaces. This was achieved by both an increase in the linear rate of matrix apposition and extension of the bone-forming surface. New bone was deposited on previously quiescent surfaces (i.e., modeling-based formation), but a proportion of this could occur by encroachment from adjacent resorption cavities. Conclusions: A single transiliac crest bone biopsy, after sequential administration of two sets of tetracycline labels is a useful approach to study the short-term effects of anabolic agents on human bone. In that paper two different relationships (short-memory and long-memory relationship) are regarded whereby the influence flow is decayed by geometric, or cutting off, or harmonic sequences. However, it limits the model to the stationary relationship. This paper extends the influence flow to a non-stationary relationship where the limitation is on ,0.5 , d , 1.0 and it can be used to detect whether the influence decays off (,0.5 , d < 0.5) or is permanent (0.5 , d , 1.0). Cenki Abstract Migmatitic cordierite gneisses within the Achankovil Zone (AZ) of southern Pan-African India record melt-producing and subsequent melt-consuming mineral reactions. Early mineral assemblages Bt-Sil-Qtz and Bt-Sil-Spl, deduced from inclusion textures in garnet prophyroblasts, break down via successive dehydration melting reactions to high- T phase assemblages (e.g. Grt-Crd-Liq, Opx-Liq, Spl-Crd-Liq). Later back reactions between the restite and the in situ crystallizing melt resulted in thin cordierite coronas separating garnet from the leucosome, and partial resorption of garnet to Opx-Crd or Crd-Bt-Qtz symplectites. Leucosomes generally display a moderate (low-strain gneisses) to strong (high-strain gneisses) depletion of alkali feldspar attributed to mineral-melt back reactions partly controlled by the degree of melt segregation. Using a KFMASH partial petrogenetic grid that includes a melt phase, and qualitative pseudosections for microdomains of high and low Al/Si ratios, the successive phase assemblages and reaction textures are interpreted in terms of a clockwise P,T path culminating at about 6,7 kbar and 900,950 °C. This P,T path is consistent with, but more detailed than published results, which suggests that taking a melt phase into account is not only a valid, but also a useful approach. Comparing P,T data and lithological and isotopic data for the AZ with adjacent East Gondwana fragments, suggests the presence of a coherent metasedimentary unit exposed from southern Madagascar via South India (AZ) and Sri Lanka (Wanni Complex) to the Lützow,Holm Bay in Eastern Antarctica. The results show that: (i) the majority of the TCR genes (82.5% of V, and 91.1% of V,) used by periodontal CD4+ T cells in A. actinomycetemcomitans -inoculated HuPBL-engrafted NOD/SCID mice overlap with those used by local periodontal T cells in LJP patients, (ii) although A. actinomycetemcomitans -reactive periodontal CD4+ TCR repertoire is relatively widespread, there are a few dominant genes shared by the LJP patients, suggesting a limited number of antigens or epitopes commonly recognized and (iii) A. actinomycetemcomitans likely lacks superantigenic characteristics. [source] N-in-1 dosing pharmacokinetics in drug discovery: Experience, theoretical and practical considerationsJOURNAL OF PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCES, Issue 7 2008Kan He Abstract N-in-1 (or cassette) dosing pharmacokinetics (PK) has been used in drug discovery for rapid assessment of PK properties of new chemical entities. However, because of potential for drug,drug interactions this procedure is still controversial. This study was to retrospectively evaluate the N-in-1 dosing approach in drug discovery with an emphasis on the potential for drug,drug interactions. The systemic clearance, volume of distribution, oral bioavailability, and renal excretion of the 31 lead compounds in rats, dogs or chimpanzees were significantly correlated between the N-in-1 dosing and discrete studies with r values of 0.69, 0.91, 0.53, and 0.83 (p,<,0.005 for all), respectively. PK parameters for 11 quality control compounds which were involved in 194 N-in-1 studies for screening approximately 1000 compounds had coefficient of variations of less than 70%. The intrinsic microsomal clearances generated from the N-in-1 and discrete incubations were nearly identical (r,=,0.97, p,<,0.0001). The intrinsic clearances of quality control compound from the N-in-1 incubations were consistent with its discrete CLint estimate (cv: 5.4%). Therefore, N-in-1 dosing is a useful approach in drug discovery to quickly obtain initial PK estimates.
