Cephalometric evaluation of the effects of pendulum appliance on various vertical growth patterns and of the changes during short-term stabilization

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the pendulum appliance in dental Class II patients with varying vertical growth patterns and to evaluate the changes during the short-term stabilization period of 3 months. The sample (n=30) was divided into two groups based on their FMA°. The high-angle group consisted of 14 patients (10 girls and 4 boys) and had a mean age of 157.7±8.0 months. The low-angle group consisted of 16 patients (8 girls and 8 boys) and had a mean age of 155.5±18.6 months. Pretreatment, posttreatment and poststabilization cephalometric radiographs were obtained to measure the changes. Mann,Whitney U and Wilcoxon tests were used for statistical evaluation. The amount of upper molar distalization was 5.9 mm (p<0.001) in the high-angle group and 1 mm (p<0.001) in the low-angle group, showing no intergroup difference. The amount of anchorage loss at the second premolars was 4.8 mm (p<0.001) in the high-angle group and 6.6 mm (p<0.001) in the low-angle group. Upper incisors moved anteriorly for 2.1 mm (p<0.05) in the high-angle group and 4.1 mm (p<0.001) in the low-angle group. Intergroup difference was statistically significant (p<0.001). During the stabilization period, 1.5 mm of anchorage loss was measured at the upper molar region in the high-angle group and 1.7 mm of anchorage loss was measured at the upper molar region in the low-angle group. During the stabilization period, upper second premolars and incisors tended to move back to their original places. The results of this study showed that pendulum appliance could move the upper molars distally in a short period of time without depending on the patient compliance. Care should be taken to prevent anchorage loss and to stabilize the upper molars for, at least, 3 months. [source]


An unusual lateral luxation of an upper incisor owing to long-term boxing without protection

The tooth displacement gradually worsened over several months because the boxer received repeated blows to the head without using a mouthguard. Being a chronic dental trauma, rather than an acute lateral luxation, this case had several unique features: the labial plate of the alveolar bone was penetrated, the root apex was free in the vestibulum, the tooth was mobile (second degree) and radiographs revealed bone resorption. This case emphasized the need for a mouthguard to be used even with amateur boxing. The dental practitioner should educate his sportsmen,patients of the risk of sport-related dental trauma and the benefit of a mouthguard. [source]


Subjective and objective perception of upper incisors

summary, The purpose of this study was to evaluate the subjective judgment (SJ) of patients on their own dental appearance and to correlate the results with objective measurements (OM) of their dentition concerning the appearance of the upper incisors. Seventy-five participants (30 men and 45 women) with normal well-being were included in the study. In a questionnaire they judged the appearance of their upper incisors. Furthermore, OM were evaluated by the investigator with regard to the following points: (i) absolute length of the upper central incisors, (ii) their length exposed during laughing, (iii) width-to-length ratio of central incisors and (iv) the proportion between the width of the lateral and central incisors. The subjective results were registered on visual-analogue scales. For the objective results standardized photographs were taken. No gender dependent differences could be found for the objectively measured parameters (median): OM1, 10·7 mm; OM2, 8·1 mm; OM3, 0·81; OM4, 0·79. However, significant correlations between subjective and objective results (SJ1/OM1, SJ2/OM2, SJ3/OM3) could be shown for men, but not for women. The maximum of the calculated regression-curves for men reflect ,golden standard values' well known from the literature. The degree of satisfaction concerning appearance of anterior incisors in accordance with golden standard values is higher for men than for women. [source]


A new species of Pseudoloris (Omomyidae, Primates) from the middle Eocene of Sant Jaume de Frontanyà (Eastern Pyrenees, Spain)

Abstract In this article we describe a new species of Pseudoloris (Omomyidae, Primates) from the Robiacian (middle Eocene) locality of Sant Jaume de Frontanyà (Eastern Pyrenees, Spain). Pseudoloris pyrenaicus is characterized by its medium size, thickened paracristid, absence of a distinct paraconid, and well-developed buccal cingulid in the lower molars, large hypoconulid in the M3, paraconule and hypocone reduced in the M1 and M2 and absent in the M3. The material from Sant Jaume de Frontanyà constitutes the most abundant sample of the genus Pseudoloris found until now in the Iberian Peninsula. Almost all the dental elements have been recovered, including those teeth hardly known for other species of the genus, such as lower and upper incisors. The new species shows intermediate features between Pseudoloris isabenae from Capella and Pseudoloris parvulus, present in different Spanish and French sites. Expression of Notch signalling-related genes in normal and differentiating rat dental pulp cells

Abstract Notch signalling is of fundamental importance to various processes during embryonic development and in adults. The possible role of Hey1, an important Notch signalling component, in odontoblast differentiation was evaluated in this study. Primary cultured dental pulp cells, derived from upper incisors of 5-week-old Wistar rats, were placed in ,-modification of Eagle's minimal essential medium supplemented with 10% Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS), and ascorbic acid (AA) and ,-glycerophosphate (,-GP), with or without dexamethasone, and cultured on dishes coated with collagen type IA for 7 days. Conventional and real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) was performed to determine the expression of Notch-related genes and dentin sialophosphoprotein as a marker of odontoblast differentiation. Dentin sialophosphoprotein and Hey1 expression was significantly increased and decreased in the presence of AA + ,-GP compared with controls, respectively. These findings suggest that Hey1 may be a negative regulator in odontoblast differentiation. [source]
