Marketing networks as a form of strategic alliance among craft enterprises

Craft enterprises are a unique form of small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) and represent an amalgam between the manufacture of products and the fulfilment of artistic vision. Craft enterprises typically have insufficient resources, inadequate access to specialised expertise and limited opportunities to make an impact on the marketplace. One way to redress these limitations and to improve the competitive position of craft enterprises is by forming networks, or cooperative alliances. The case study of ,Homethrown', a successful marketing network for potters, provides insight into the advantages and limitations of this type of strategic alliance, as well as guidelines for fostering cooperation and moderating conflict. THE CHRISTOLOGICAL FOCUS OF VLADIMIR SOLOV'EV'S SOPHIOLOGY*

Vladimir Solov'ev (1853,1900) is one of the major influences on Sergii Bulgakov's "sophiology" and has been praised by both Hans Urs von Balthasar and John Milbank. However, his theology has often been read as a mere "religious philosophy" unduly influenced by Gnosticism and German Idealism. The article argues that Solov'ev's theology is more accurately understood as a unique form of Christology which integrates Gnostic and Idealist thought into Chalcedonian orthodoxy. Solov'ev's most important contribution is a sophiological reading of Christology which attempts to found the created on the uncreated without collapsing one into the other or ontologically juxtaposing them. Implantable Defibrillator Therapy in Naxos Disease

Naxos disease is a unique form of right ventricular cardiomyopathy with a high prevalence of malignant ventricular arrhythmias, including sudden cardiac death. As a hereditary systemic disease confined to a small island, it has been closely studied over the last 15 years. The implantation of an automatic defibrillator provides an alternative form of antiarrhythmic management to improve life expectancy in these high risk cardiac patients. We present the first two Naxos disease patients with malignant ventricular arrhythmias who had defibrillator implantation. [source]


The Microanatomy of the Palatine Tonsils of the One-Humped Camel (Camelus dromedarius)

Abstract Tonsils form a first line of defense against foreign antigens and are also a route of entry and a replication site for some pathogens. The palatine tonsils are the largest of all the tonsils. Despite their general importance, little is known about the microanatomy of the palatine tonsils of the one-humped camel. Palatine tonsils of 10 clinically healthy male camels were obtained directly after slaughtering for human consumption. The tonsils were examined macroscopically and by light, scanning, and transmission electron microscopy. Palatine tonsils had the unique form of several spherical macroscopic nodules protruding into the pharyngeal lumen. These spherical masses were numerous and close together in the lateral oropharyngeal wall, with a few solitary nodules in the dorsal wall. Each nodule had one or two apical openings to crypts, and was enclosed by an incomplete connective tissue capsule and covered apically with stratified squamous keratinized epithelium. The tonsillar crypt was lined with stratified squamous non keratinized epithelium. Several lymphocytes infiltrated the epithelial layer, forming patches of reticular epithelium. Lymphoid follicles with obvious germinal centers extended under the epithelial surface. Diffusely localized lymphocytes were seen in the interfollicular region. High endothelial venules, dendritic cells, macrophages, and plasma cells were observed among these lymphocytes. The unique arrangement of palatine tonsils in separate units with individual crypts results in a very large surface exposed to antigen and indicates a significant immunological role of palatine tonsils in the camel. Product Technology Transfer in the Upstream Supply Chain

This article addresses the transfer of new product technologies from outside the firm for integration into a new product system as part of a product development effort. Product technology transfer is a key activity in the complex process of new product development and is the fundamental link in the technology supply chain. Product technology transfer too often is dealt with in an ad-hoc fashion. Purposeful management of the product technology transfer process leads to more effective transfers in terms of timeliness, cost, functional performance, and competence building. Better management of product technology transfer gives firms access to a greater variety of new technology options, improves a firm's ability to offer significantly differentiated products, deepens the firm's competitive competencies, and positively influences sustained product development success. The central objective of this article is to gain insight into product technology transfer so that companies can manage this process more successfully and so that researchers can investigate this critical activity further. This article describes the technology supply chain as a unique form of a supply chain that poses a set of managerial challenges and requirements distinguishing it from the more traditional component supply chain. Because a single product technology transfer project is the fundamental piece in the technology supply chain, understanding this piece well is key to leveraging the extended technology supply chain and to improving overall product development performance. This article integrates literatures on new product development, supply chain management, and technology management and builds on organizational theory to present a conceptual model of determinants of product technology transfer success. The core proposition is that product technology transfer effectiveness is greatest when companies carefully match (or "fit") the type of technology to be transferred (the "technology uncertainty") with the type of relationship between the technology supplier and recipient (the "interorganizational interaction"). A quite detailed framework characterizing technology uncertainty along the dimensions of technology novelty, complexity, and tacitness is presented to help in assessing the challenges associated with transferring a particular product technology. This article also considers detailed elements characterizing the interorganizational interactions between the technology source and recipient firms. This helps firms consider the appropriate means to facilitate the interfirm process of technology transfer. Overall, this article provides practical insight into characterizing technologies and into improving the product technology transfer process. This article also provides a strong theoretical foundation to aid future research on product technology transfer in the technology supply chain. [source]


Characterization of apoptosis induced by protein kinase C inhibitors and its modulation by the caspase pathway in acute promyelocytic leukaemia

Acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APL;M3) is a unique form of acute myelogenous leukaemia characterized by t(15;17) translocation. The induction of apoptosis via inhibiting protein kinase C (PKC) has been recently viewed as a promising tool for the eradication of several malignant disorders. In the present study, we investigated the effect of two different protein kinase C inhibitors, Gö6976 and safingol, on the induction of apoptosis in the APL cell line NB4 and its all trans retinoic acid (ATRA)-resistant variant NB4.306. The effect of the PKC inhibitors on leukaemic cells obtained from three APL patients was also studied. We also evaluated the possible involvement of the caspases in apoptosis induced by PKC inhibitors. Significant time- and concentration-dependent apoptotic changes were demonstrated using Gö6976 and safingol. In addition, our results demonstrated that the caspases were involved in the apoptosis induced by the PKC inhibitors. In conclusion, our study illustrates that the PKC inhibitors Gö6976 and safingol induce apoptosis in APL and hence could be potential therapeutic agents for the treatment of this disease. [source]
