Selected AbstractsRhodium Fluoroapatite Catalyzed Conjugate Addition of Arylboronic Acids to ,,, -Unsaturated Carbonyl CompoundsHELVETICA CHIMICA ACTA, Issue 10 2008Lakshmi Kantam, Mannepalli Abstract Rhodium fluoroapatite (RhFAP) is an efficient catalyst for conjugate addition of organoboron reagents to ,,, -unsaturated carbonyl compounds. A variety of arylboronic acids and ,,, -unsaturated carbonyl compounds were converted to the corresponding conjugate-addition products, demonstrating the versatility of the reaction. The reaction is highly selective. RhFAP was recovered quantitatively by simple filtration, and reused for four cycles. The reaction was convenient to carry out with a loading of 1,mol% catalyst at room temperature without inert gas protection. This method provides an easy approach to trans vicinal haloamino derivatives of ,,,-unsaturated carbonyl compounds and simple olefins in high yields (up to 99.8%) and in excellent regio- and stereoselectivities. The electron-rich and electron-deficient olefins show significant differences in activity to the aminobromination reaction and give the opposite regioselectivities. Two possible pathways involving separately a bromonium or an aziridinium intermediate have been proposed. The exceptional stability of 1b,5b has been attributed to the deeply buried nickel,NHC ,-bonding molecular orbitals as evidenced from the density functional theory (DFT) studies.
