    STOCHASTIC STABILIZATION AND H, CONTROL FOR DISCRETE JUMPING SYSTEMS WITH TIME DELAYS

    ABSTRACT In this paper, robust stochastic stabilization and H, control for a class of uncertain discrete-time linear systems with Markovian jumping parameters are considered. Based on a new bounded real lemma derived upon an inequality recently proposed, a new iterative state-feedback controller design procedure for discrete time-delay systems is presented. Sufficient conditions for stochastic stabilization are derived in the form of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) based on an equivalent model transformation, and the corresponding H, control law is given. Finally, numerical examples are given to illustrate the solvability of the problems and effectiveness of the results. [source]


    Experimental Evidence of the Knowledge Gap: Message Arousal, Motivation, and Time Delay

    This study experimentally tested the knowledge gap from an information processing perspective. Specifically, knowledge acquisition was investigated under conditions of medium and low news message arousal, with time delay. Results show the persistence of a knowledge gap, particularly for low arousing messages. In fact, at low levels of message arousal, the gap is larger than at medium levels of arousal. Some existing research suggests that message salience explains the knowledge gap. Findings from this study show that information processing aptitude may also be a significant factor. Measures of several dimensions of participant motivation to cognitively engage with news messages were added as covariates to statistical analyses. These were found not to affect the knowledge gap outcomes in this data set. Résumé Des preuves expérimentales de l,écart des savoirs : intérêt des messages, motivation et décalage de temps Cette étude a testé expérimentalement l'écart des savoirs à partir d,une perspective du traitement de l'information. En particulier, l,acquisition des connaissances fut étudiée dans des conditions d'intérêt moyen et faible des messages d,information, avec un décalage de temps. Les résultats démontrent la persistance d'un écart des savoirs, particulièrement pour les messages à faible intérêt. En fait, l,écart est plus large à de faibles niveaux d'intérêt qu,à des niveaux moyens. Des recherches préalables suggèrent que la prépondérance des messages explique l'écart des savoirs. Les résultats de cette étude démontrent que les aptitudes de traitement de l,information peuvent aussi être un facteur important. Insbesondere wurde die Wissensaneignung bei Nachrichten unter Bedingungen eines mittleren und niedrigen Botschaftserregungsniveaus mit Zeitverzögerung untersucht. Die Ergebnisse zeigen das Fortdauern einer Wissenskluft insbesondere bei wenig erregenden Botschaften. Tatsächlich ist die Kluft bei einem geringen Niveau der Botschaftserregung größer als bei mittleren Erregungsniveaus. Los resultados muestran la persistencia de la brecha de conocimiento, particularmente en los mensajes de excitación baja. De hecho, en los niveles de excitación de mensaje bajos la brecha fue mayor que en los niveles de excitación medianos. Algunas investigaciones existentes sugieren que la notabilidad del mensaje explica la brecha de conocimiento. Los hallazgos de este estudio muestran que la aptitud de procesamiento de información puede ser un factor significante también. Las medidas de varias dimensiones de la motivación del participante para involucrarse cognitivamente con los mensajes de noticias fueron agregadas como covarianzas a los análisis estadísticos.     Control of Teleoperators with Communication Time Delay through State Convergence

    This paper describes a new control method of teleoperation systems with communication time delay. This method models the teleoperation system in the state space, considering all the possible interactions that could appear in the operator-master-slave-environment set, and it uses the Taylor expansion to model the time delay. The control system allows that the slave manipulator follows the master in spite of the time delay in the communication channel. The tracking is achieved by state convergence between the master and the slave. The method is also able to establish the desired dynamics of this convergence and the dynamics of the slave manipulator. Furthermore, a simple design procedure is provided to obtain the control system gains. These control gains are calculated solving a set of seven equations. The control method is robust to the uncertainty of the design parameters, so it is not necessary to obtain good estimations of these parameters.     Early treatment after a symptomatic event is not associated with an increased risk of stroke in patients undergoing carotid stenting

    A recently symptomatic carotid artery stenosis carries a high risk of subsequent ischaemic events and thus requires rapid treatment. We investigated the influence of the time delay between the last symptomatic event of a carotid stenosis and subsequent carotid artery stenting (CAS) with respect to the combined 30-day outcome of stroke and death. In a group of 320 patients undergoing CAS the median delay before the intervention was 19 days (interquartile range 10,36) and the combined 30-day complication rate was 8.4%. Time delay was not significantly associated with peri-procedural complications, regardless of whether this variable was dichotomized (<14 days and ,14 days), separated into interquartile ranges or analysed as a continuous variable. Our results indicate that early CAS is not associated with an increased complication rate in patients with a recently symptomatic carotid stenosis. Thus, if CAS has been selected as the treatment modality for a patient, it should be performed as soon as possible to maximize the benefit of the intervention in reducing the risk of stroke.     Stability analysis for real-time pseudodynamic and hybrid pseudodynamic testing with multiple sources of delay

    Abstract Real-time pseudodynamic (PSD) and hybrid PSD test methods are experimental techniques to obtain the response of structures, where restoring force feedback is used by an integration algorithm to generate command displacements. Time delays in the restoring force feedback from the physical test structure and/or the analytical substructure cause inaccuracies and can potentially destabilize the system. In this paper a method for investigating the stability of structural systems involved in real-time PSD and hybrid PSD tests with multiple sources of delay is presented. The method involves the use of the pseudodelay technique to perform an exact mapping of fixed delay terms to determine the stability boundary. The approach described here is intended to be a practical one that enables the requirements for a real-time testing system to be established in terms of system parameters when multiple sources of delay exist. Several real-time testing scenarios with delay that include single degree of freedom (SDOF) and multi-degree of freedom (MDOF) real-time PSD/hybrid PSD tests are analyzed to illustrate the method. From the stability analysis of the real-time hybrid testing of an SDOF test structure, delay-independent stability with respect to either experimental or analytical substructure delay is shown to exist. The conditions that the structural properties must satisfy in order for delay-independent stability to exist are derived. Real-time hybrid PSD testing of an MDOF structure equipped with a passive damper is also investigated, where observations from six different cases related to the stability plane behavior are summarized.     The Geysers geothermal field: results from shear-wave splitting analysis in a fractured reservoir

    SUMMARY Clear shear-wave splitting (SWS) is observed in 1757 high signal-to-noise ratio microearthquake seismograms recorded by two high density seismic arrays in the NW and the SE Geysers geothermal fields in California. The Geysers reservoir rocks within the study area are largely composed of lithic, low-grade metamorphism, well-fractured metagraywackes which commonly lack schistosity, warranting the general assumption that shear-wave splitting here is induced solely by stress-aligned fracturing in an otherwise isotropic medium. The high quality of observed shear-wave splitting parameters (fast shear-wave polarization directions and time delays) and the generally good data spatial coverage provide an unprecedented opportunity to demonstrate the applicability and limitations of the shear-wave splitting approach to successfully detect fracture systems in the shallow crust based on SWS field observations from a geothermal reservoir. Results from borehole stations in the NW Geysers indicate that polarization orientations range between N and N60E; while in the SE Geysers, ground surface stations show polarization directions that are generally N5E, N35E-to-N60E, N75E-to-N85E, and N20W-to-N55W. Crack orientations obtained from observed polarization orientations are in good agreement with independent field evidence, such as cracks in geological core data, tracer tests, locally mapped fractures, and the regional tectonic setting. Time delays range typically between 8 and 40 ms km,1, indicating crack densities well within the norm of fractured reservoirs. The sizeable collection of high resolution shear-wave splitting parameters shows evidence of prevalent vertical to nearly vertical fracture patterns in The Geysers field. At some locations, however, strong variations of SWS parameters with ray azimuth and incident angle within the shear-wave window of seismic stations indicate the presence of more complex fracture patterns in the subsurface.     The network behind spatio-temporal patterns: building low-complexity retinal models in CNN based on morphology, pharmacology and physiology

    Abstract In this paper, a vertebrate retina model is described based on a cellular neural network (CNN) architecture. Though largely built on the experience of previous studies, the CNN computational framework is considerably simplified: first-order RC cells are used with space-invariant nearest-neighbour interactions only. All non-linear synaptic connections are monotonic continuous functions of the pre-synaptic voltage. Time delays in the interactions are continuous represented by additional first-order cells. The modelling approach is neuromorphic in its spirit relying on both morphological and pharmacological information. However, the primary motivation lies in fitting the spatio-temporal output of the model to the data recorded from biological cells (tiger salamander). In order to meet a low-complexity (VLSI) implementation framework some structural simplifications have been made. Large-neighbourhood interaction (neurons with large processes), furthermore inter-layer signal propagation are modelled through diffusion and wave phenomena. This work presents novel CNN models for the outer and some partial models for the inner (light adapted) retina. It describes an approach that focuses on efficient parameter tuning and also makes it possible to discuss adaptation, sensitivity and robustness issues on retinal ,image processing' from an engineering point of view.     Deployable Truss Operation by ETS-VII Robot Arm Using Force Accommodation Control

    An experiment for teleoperating a truss structure has been performed as part of a space robotics mission on Engineering Test Satellite No. 7 (ETS-VII). This article reports the results from truss experiments conducted by means of the ETS-VII robot arm using force accommodation control, which is a specific control law developed for the ETS-VII robot arm. With this control function, the robot arm moves toward the point where the external force becomes the command value, which is sent from the ground. This control technique is useful especially in the case of teleoperation with time delay, since excessive force and torque can be avoided, and in addition, no a priori trajectory information is required. However, the robot arm cannot attain the desired configuration for itself. These characteristics can be used for deployable and assembly truss operation, making full use of merits and avoiding demerits. The effectiveness is confirmed through an ETS-VII onboard experiment.     A pulse programmer for nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers

    Abstract A pulse programmer (PP) designed to control a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer is reported on. The heart of the PP is a computer programmable logic device (CPDL) that provides flexibility to the design and, at the same time, reduces the number of electronics components needed and the dimensions of the printed circuit board. The PP works as follow: first, a pulse sequence defined by a set of instructions is loaded into the RAM memory of the PP. Then, when the process is started, the instructions are, one by one, read, decoded, and executed. Four types of instructions (functions) were defined: PRINT A, PRINT B, WAIT, and STOP. PRINT A and PRINT B change the status of the output channels A and B, respectively, WAIT generates a time delay, and STOP terminates the sequence. The output ports A and B have 14 channels each, and the shortest pulse and resolution are both 200 ns. The design of the PP is versatile, and new functions can be added through software without modifying the printed circuit board. To control the PP from a personal computer, a program named PulseJr was developed. It contains a graphical user interface (GUI) and pulse sequences can be drawn on the monitor screen with the mouse of the computer. Once the pulse sequence is sketched, clicking a button the program compiles the pulse sequence, generates the set of instructions, loads them into the RAM memory of the PP, and starts the pulse sequence. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.     Influence of the Wall Characteristics on the Development of MARFE in Tokamaks

    Abstract Multifaceted asymmetric radiation from the edge (MARFE) normally develops in fusion devices close to the density limit. MARFE is considered a result of thermal instabilities excited under critical conditions through different mechanisms: impurity radiation, recycling of neutral particles, anomalous transport of charged particles and energy. Recent experiments on tokamaks TEXTOR and JET show that plasma-wall interaction, leading to release of recycling neutrals and impurities, plays a very important role for the formation of MARFE. In the present contribution we develop further the MARFE models based on the instability of particle recycling on the tokamak wall by including a simple description for the release of recycling neutrals from the wall surface into the plasma. This development takes into account the time delay between the out flow of charged particles from the plasma and in flux of neutrals. The linear stability analysis shows that this does not change the critical plasma density for the MARFE formation but modifies significantly the growth rate of unstable perturbations developing when the density exceeds the threshold. These findings are confirmed in a non-linear consideration by solving the equations for the particle, momentum and energy transfer in the plasma coupled with the wall particle balance equations. This is done in a one-dimensional approximation by taking into account the variation of the main plasma parameters in the poloidal direction and making averaging in the radial direction over the plasma edge width of the penetration depth of neutrals.     Investigation of the Influence of Overvoltage, Auxiliary Glow Current and Relaxation Time on the Electrical Breakdown Time Delay Distributions in Neon

    Abstract Results of the statistical analysis of the electrical breakdown time delay for neon-filled tube at 13.3 mbar are presented in this paper. Experimental distributions of the breakdown time delay were established on the basis of 200 successive and independent measurements, for different overvoltages, relaxation times and auxiliary glows. Obtained experimental distributions deviate from usual exponential distribution. Breakdown time delay distributions are numerically generated, usingMonte-Carlo method, as the compositions of the two independent random variables with an exponential and a Gaussian distribution. Theoretical breakdown time delay distribution is obtained from the convolution of the exponential and Gaussian distribution. Performed analysis shows that the crucial parameter that determines the complex structure of time delay is the overvoltage and if it is of the order of few percentage, then distribution of time delay must be treated as an convolution of two random variables.     Free radical generation and oxidative stress with ageing and exercise: Differential effects in the myocardium and liver

    Reactive oxygen species and other oxidants are implicated in the mechanisms of biological ageing and exercise-induced tissue damage. The present study examined the effects of ageing and an acute bout of exercise on intracellular oxidant generation, lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation and glutathione (GSH) status in the heart and liver of young adult (8 month, N=24) and old (24 month, N=24) male Fischer 344 rats. Young rats ran on treadmill at 25 m min,1, 5% grade until exhaustion (55.4 ± 2.7 min), whereas old rats ran at 15 m min,1, 5% until exhaustion (58.0 ± 2.7 min). Rate of dichlorofluorescin (DCFH) oxidation, an indication of intracellular oxidant production, was significantly higher in the homogenates of aged heart and liver compared with their young counterparts. In the isolated heart and liver mitochondria, ageing increased oxidant production by 29 and 32% (P < 0.05), respectively. Acute exercise increased oxidant production in the aged heart but not in the liver. When nicodinamide dinucleotide phosphate (reduced), adenosine diphosphate and Fe3+ were included in the assay, DCFH oxidation rate was 47 and 34% higher (P < 0.05) in the aged heart and liver homogenates, respectively, than the young ones. The age differences in the induced state reached 83 and 140% (P < 0.01) in isolated heart and liver mitochondria, respectively. Lipid peroxidation was increased in the aged liver and exercised aged heart, whereas protein carbonyl content was elevated only in the aged heart (P < 0.05). Although our data using DCFH method probably underestimated cellular oxidant production because of time delay and antioxidant competition, it is clear that oxidative stress was enhanced in both heart and liver with old age. Furthermore, aged myocardium showed greater susceptibility to oxidative stress after heavy exercise. [source]


    Measurement delay associated with the Guardian® RT continuous glucose monitoring system

Abstract Aims, Using compartment modelling, we assessed the time delay between blood glucose and sensor glucose measured by the Guardian® RT continuous glucose monitoring system in young subjects with Type 1 diabetes (T1D). Methods, Twelve children and adolescents with T1D treated by continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (male/female 7/5; age 13.1 ± 4.2 years; body mass index 21.9 ± 4.3 kg/m2; mean ± sd) were studied over 19 h in a Clinical Research Facility. Guardian® RT was calibrated every 6 h and sensor glucose measured every 5 min. Reference blood glucose was measured every 15 min using a YSI 2300 STAT Plus Analyser. A population compartment model of sensor glucose,blood glucose kinetics was adopted to estimate the time delay, the calibration scale and the calibration shift. Results, The population median of the time delay was 15.8 (interquartile range 15.2, 16.5) min, which was corroborated by correlation analysis between blood glucose and 15-min delayed sensor glucose. The delay has a relatively low intersubject variability, with 95% of individuals predicted to have delays between 10.4 and 24.3 min. Population medians (interquartile range) for the scale and shift are 0.800 (0.777, 0.823) (unitless) and 1.66 (1.47, 1.84) mmol/l, respectively. Conclusions, In young subjects with T1D, the total time delay associated with the Guardian® RT system was approximately 15 min. This is twice that expected on physiological grounds, suggesting a 5- to 10-min delay because of data processing. Delays above 25 min are rarely to be observed. [source]


    Predictive instantaneous optimal control of elastic structures during earthquakes

    Abstract A predictive instantaneous optimal control (PIOC) algorithm is proposed for controlling the seismic responses of elastic structures. This algorithm compensates for the time delay that happens in practical control applications by predicting the structural response over a period that equals the time delay, and by substituting the predicted response in the instantaneous optimal control (IOC) algorithm. The unique feature of this proposed PIOC algorithm is that it is simple and at the same time compensates for the time delay very effectively. Numerical examples of single degree of freedom structures are presented to compare the performance of PIOC and IOC systems for various time delay magnitudes. Results show that a time delay always causes degradation of control efficiency, but PIOC can greatly reduce this degradation compared to IOC. The effects of the structure's natural periods and the choice of control gains on the degradation induced by the time delay are also analyzed. Results show that shorter natural periods and larger control gains are both more sensitive and more serious to the degradation of control efficiency. Finally, a practical application of PIOC is performed on a six-story moment-resisting steel frame. It is demonstrated that PIOC contributes significantly to maintain stability in multiple degree of freedom structures, and at the same time PIOC has a satisfactory control performance.     Nitrate-Selective Solid Contact Electrodes with Poly(3-octylthiophene) and Poly(aniline) as Ion-to-Electron Transducers Buffered with Electron-Ion-Exchanging Resin

    Abstract The study of nitrate selective solid contact electrodes containing poly(3-octyl)thiophene and poly(aniline) demonstrated the advantage of buffering the transducing layer with electron-ion-exchanging resin. The buffering, in particular in the case of poly(aniline) doped with nitrate anions ensured significant improvement of the long-term stability and piece-to-piece reproducibility of the electrode potentials. It is shown that the redox species causes potential drift after a long time delay, probably because of slow diffusion in the membrane bulk. [source]


    Bilateral teleoperation under time-varying communication time delay considering contact with environment

    Abstract With recent popularization of the Internet, bilateral control systems which are robust to fluctuant and unpredictable time delay are desirable. In such a situation, communication disturbance observer (CDOB) has been proposed as a control method for fluctuant and unpredictable time delay in bilateral teleoperation. It compensates time delay using disturbance observer by considering the effect of communication delay on the system as acceleration dimensional disturbance. Since this method cannot separate network disturbance from contact force exerted on a slave, force response of the slave transmitted to the master side is not precise. This paper presents a method for separating network disturbance from the contact force exerted on the slave. By producing the compensation value using separated network disturbance the force response value of the slave is transmitted to the master side more precisely. Measurements, Autopsy investigation and toxicological analysis of blood and urine; and police reports. Findings, In two-thirds of the 192 cases, death occurred in public places, and mostly without any time delay. Blood concentrations of morphine ranged from 50 to 1200 ng/g, and of 6-MAM from 1 to 80 ng/g. Codeine was detected in 96% of the subjects. In the majority of cases the forensic investigation indicated polydrug use, the most common additional findings being alcohol and benzodiazepines. However, in one-quarter of the cases other drug combinations were found. Previous abstinence from heroin and use of alcohol were identified as risk factors. For 6-MAM there was also a correlation with the presence of THC and benzodiazepines. Despite a high frequency of heart abnormalities (e.g. myocarditis and focal myocardial fibrosis), these conditions did not correlate with morphine or 6-MAM blood concentrations. Conclusions, We confirm that alcohol intake and loss of tolerance are risk factors for death from heroin use, whereas no connection to heart pathology was observed. Further, prospective, studies should focus on other possible risk factors. [source]


    Early treatment after a symptomatic event is not associated with an increased risk of stroke in patients undergoing carotid stenting

    A recently symptomatic carotid artery stenosis carries a high risk of subsequent ischaemic events and thus requires rapid treatment. We investigated the influence of the time delay between the last symptomatic event of a carotid stenosis and subsequent carotid artery stenting (CAS) with respect to the combined 30-day outcome of stroke and death. In a group of 320 patients undergoing CAS the median delay before the intervention was 19 days (interquartile range 10,36) and the combined 30-day complication rate was 8.4%. Time delay was not significantly associated with peri-procedural complications, regardless of whether this variable was dichotomized (<14 days and ,14 days), separated into interquartile ranges or analysed as a continuous variable. Our results indicate that early CAS is not associated with an increased complication rate in patients with a recently symptomatic carotid stenosis. Thus, if CAS has been selected as the treatment modality for a patient, it should be performed as soon as possible to maximize the benefit of the intervention in reducing the risk of stroke.     The medullary dorsal reticular nucleus enhances the responsiveness of spinal nociceptive neurons to peripheral stimulation in the rat

    Abstract Single-unit spinal recordings combined with application of glutamate into the medullary dorsal reticular nucleus were used to assess the action of this nucleus upon deep dorsal horn neurons in rats. Injection of high glutamate concentrations (10 and 100 mm) induced a dramatic and long-lasting increase of the responses of wide-dynamic range neurons to electrical stimulation of the sciatic nerve in the noxious range, without affecting ongoing discharges. Post-stimulus time histograms revealed that this increase concerned the post-discharge, but not A- or C-fibre-mediated responses, which remained unchanged independently of the stimulation frequency applied. The onset of the glutamate-induced response enhancement occurred with a concentration-dependent time delay and developed slowly until its maximum. These data indicate that the medullary dorsal reticular nucleus exerts a facilitating action upon deep dorsal horn wide-dynamic range neurons by enhancing their capacity to respond to peripheral stimulation through prolongation of their discharge. This action is accompanied by the strengthening of wind-up of deep dorsal horn wide-dynamic range neurons, hence providing a plausible substrate for chronic pain states. These results are in agreement with previous behavioural studies suggesting a pronociceptive role for the dorsal reticular nucleus [Almeida et al. (1996) Brain Res. Bull., 39, 7,15; Almeida et al. (1999) Eur. J. Neurosci., 11, 110,122], and support the involvement of a reverberating circuit, previously described in morphological studies [Almeida et al. (1993) Neuroscience, 55, 1093,1106; Almeida et al. (2000) Eur. J. Pain, 4, 373,387], which probably operates only at a certain threshold of activation. [source]


    Computation of time delay margin for power system small-signal stability

    Abstract With the extensive use of phasor measurement units (PMU) in the wide-area measurement/monitoring systems (WAMS), time delays have become unavoidable in power systems. This paper presents a direct and exact method to compute the delay margin of power systems with single and commensurate time delays. The delay margin is the maximum amount of time delay that the system can tolerate before it becomes unstable for a given operating point. First, without using any approximation or substitution, the transcendental characteristic equation is converted into a polynomial without the transcendentality such that its real roots coincide with the imaginary roots of the characteristic equation exactly. The resulting polynomial also enables us to easily determine the delay dependency of the system stability and the sensitivities of crossing roots with respect to time delay. Then, an expression in terms of system parameters and imaginary root of the characteristic equation is derived for computing the delay margin. The proposed method is applied to a single-machine-infinite bus (SMIB) power system with an exciter. Delay margins are computed for a wide range of system parameters including generator mechanical power, damping and transient reactance, exciter gain, and transmission line reactance. The results indicate that the delay margin decreases as the mechanical power, exciter gain and line reactance increase while it increases with increasing generator transient reactance Additionally, the relationship between the delay margin and generator damping is found be relatively complex.     Experimental and numerical studies on dynamic crack growth in layered slate rock under wedge impact loads: part II , non-plane strain problem

    ABSTRACT Dynamic crack propagation in non-plane strain (or 3D) slate blocks under wedge impact loads was investigated numerically in this part of the paper. A parabolic-shaped crack trajectory was taken into consideration to model the crack propagation in slate blocks for analyzing the impact splitting of layered slate rock. Major and minor axes of the parabola were determined from the condition of equal mode I stress intensity factors (SIFs) along the crack front. Mode I SIFs were determined for experimental breaking loads for each increment of crack growth in a manner similar to that mentioned in part I of this paper. These values were compared with the plane strain material fracture toughness value obtained from experimental studies and very good agreement was obtained between them, for the case of actual load applied on the specimen. Numerical analysis of a field problem, i.e., separation of a large-sized slate slab from the rock strata in a slate quarry using wedge impacting, was also carried out in this paper. It can be observed that a large magnitude of load is required to break large-sized slate blocks; but this load is applied through a number of smaller load-capacity actuators-in-parallel, requiring large power capacity for the hydraulic pumps. However, this required power could be reduced considerably if the load applied on the line of hydraulic actuators is cascaded across the (line of) actuators (starting from centrally placed actuators) with a small time delay (equal to the initial crushing time in slate rock).     Sympathetic control of short-term heart rate variability and its pharmacological modulation

    Abstract The static relationship between heart rate (HR) and the activity of either vagal or sympathetic nerves is roughly linear within the physiological range of HR variations. The dynamic control of HR by autonomic nerves is characterized by a fixed time delay between the onset of changes in nerve activity and the onset of changes in HR. This delay is much longer for sympathetically than for vagally mediated changes in HR. In addition, the kinetics of the HR responses shows the properties of a low-pass filter with short (vagal) and long (sympathetic) time constants. These differences might be secondary to differences in nervous conduction times, width of synaptic cleft, kinetics of receptor activation and post-receptor events. Because of the accentuated low-pass filter characteristics of the HR response to sympathetic modulation, sympathetic influences are almost restricted to the very-low-frequency component of HR variability, but the chronotropic effects of vagal stimulation usually predominate over those of sympathetic stimulation in this frequency band. Oscillations in cardiac sympathetic nerve activity are not involved in respiratory sinus arrhythmia (high-frequency component) and make a minor contribution to HR oscillations of approximately 10-s period (low-frequency component of approximately 0.1 Hz), at least in the supine position. In the latter case, HR oscillations are derived mainly from a baroreflex, vagally mediated response to blood pressure Mayer waves. Beta-blockers and centrally acting sympathoinhibitory drugs share the ability to improve the baroreflex control of HR, possibly through vagal facilitation, which might be beneficial in several cardiovascular diseases.     Optimal measurement of relative and absolute delay times by simulated annealing

    Summary Conventional approaches to determine relative arrival times of body waves recorded by a local or a regional array rely on cross-correlations between pairs of traces. This problem is better posed as a non-linear inverse problem, which involves the minimization of a cost function that measures the difference between a reference unknown waveform that can be time delayed, and the observed data. The unknown parameters that are solved for, are the amplitude values at each time sample of the optimal waveform and its time delay defined for each trace. The problem, which has a large number of unknown parameters, is solved with simulated annealing. The algorithm is very efficient and can be used for a routine analysis of seismic data. The application of this method to several earthquakes recorded during different PASSCAL experiments demonstrates that it provides accurate and robust differential traveltime measurements even with very noisy data.     Experimental Evidence of the Knowledge Gap: Message Arousal, Motivation, and Time Delay

    This study experimentally tested the knowledge gap from an information processing perspective. Specifically, knowledge acquisition was investigated under conditions of medium and low news message arousal, with time delay. Results show the persistence of a knowledge gap, particularly for low arousing messages. In fact, at low levels of message arousal, the gap is larger than at medium levels of arousal. Some existing research suggests that message salience explains the knowledge gap. Findings from this study show that information processing aptitude may also be a significant factor. Measures of several dimensions of participant motivation to cognitively engage with news messages were added as covariates to statistical analyses. These were found not to affect the knowledge gap outcomes in this data set.     The Effects of Graded Occlusion on Manual Search and Visual Attention in 5- to 8-Month-Old Infants

    Young infants may be limited in searching for hidden objects because they lack the means-end motor skill to lift occluders from objects. This account was investigated by presenting 5- to 8-month-old infants with objects hidden behind transparent, semitransparent, and opaque curtains. If a means,end deficit explains search limitations, then infants should search no more for an object behind a transparent curtain than for objects behind semitransparent or opaque curtains. However, level of occlusion had a significant effect on manual search and visual attention. Infants retrieved and contacted the object more, contacted the curtain more, and looked away less with the transparent curtain than with the semi transparent or opaque curtains. Adding a time delay before allowing search and presenting a distraction after occlusion further depressed infants' behavior. The findings fail to support the means,end deficit hypothesis, but are consistent with the account that young infants lack object permanence. [source]


    Stability and accuracy analysis of a discrete model reference adaptive controller without and with time delay

    Abstract Adaptive control techniques can be applied to dynamical systems whose parameters are unknown. We propose a technique based on control and numerical analysis approaches to the study of the stability and accuracy of adaptive control algorithms affected by time delay. In particular, we consider the adaptive minimal control synthesis (MCS) algorithm applied to linear time-invariant plants, due to which, the whole controlled system generated from state and control equations discretized by the zero-order-hold (ZOH) sampling is nonlinear. Hence, we propose two linearization procedures for it: the first is via what we term as physical insight and the second is via Taylor series expansion. The physical insight scheme results in useful methods for a priori selection of the controller parameters and of the discrete-time step. As there is an inherent sampling delay in the process, a fixed one-step delay in the discrete-time MCS controller is introduced. This results in a reduction of both the absolute stability regions and the controller performance. Owing to the shortcomings of ZOH sampling in coping with high-frequency disturbances, a linearly implicit L-stable integrator is also used within a two degree-of-freedom controlled system.     Semi-discretization method for delayed systems
