Selected AbstractsEffect of Different Crop Densities of Winter Wheat on Recovery of Nitrogen in Crop and Soil within the Growth PeriodJOURNAL OF AGRONOMY AND CROP SCIENCE, Issue 3 2001K. Blankenau Previous experiments have shown that, at harvest of winter wheat, recovery of fertilizer N applied in early spring [tillering, Zadok's growth stage (GS) 25] is lower than that of N applied later in the growth period. This can be explained by losses and immobilization of N, which might be higher between GS 25 and stem elongation (GS 31). It was hypothesized that a higher crop density (i.e. more plants per unit area) results in an increased uptake of fertilizer N applied at GS 25, so that less fertilizer N is subject to losses and immobilization. Different crop densities of winter wheat at GS 25 were established by sowing densities of 100 seeds m,2 (Slow), 375 seeds m,2 (Scfp= common farming practice) and 650 seeds m,2 (Shigh) in autumn. The effect of sowing density on crop N uptake and apparent fertilizer N recovery (aFNrec = N in fertilized treatments , N in unfertilized treatments) in crops and soil mineral N (Nmin), as well as on lost and immobilized N (i.e. non-recovered N = N rate , aFNrec), was investigated for two periods after N application at GS 25 [i.e. from GS 25 to 15 days later (GS 25 + 15d), and from GS 25 + 15d to GS 31] and in a third period between GS 31 and harvest (i.e. after second and third N applications). Fertilizer N rates varied at GS 25 (0, 43 and 103 kg N ha,1), GS 31 (0 and 30 kg N ha,1) and ear emergence (0, 30 and 60 kg ha,1). At GS 25 + 15d, non-recovered N was highest (up to 33 kg N ha,1 and up to 74 kg N ha,1 at N rates of 43 and 103 kg N ha,1, respectively) due to low crop N uptake after the first N dressing. Non-recovered N was not affected by sowing density. Re-mineralization during later growth stages indicated that non-recovered N had been immobilized. N uptake rates from the second and third N applications were lowest for Slow, so non-recovered N at harvest was highest for Slow. Although non-recovered N was similar for Scfp and Shigh, the highest grain yields were found at Scfp and N dressings of 43 + 30 + 60 kg N ha,1. This combination of sowing density and N rates was the closest to common farming practice. Grain yields were lower for Shigh than for Scfp, presumably due to high competition between plants for nutrients and water. In conclusion, reducing or increasing sowing density compared to Scfp did not reduce immobilization (and losses) of fertilizer N and did not result in increased fertilizer N use efficiency or grain yields. Einfluß unterschiedlicher pflanzendichten von Winterweizen auf die Wiederfindung von Stickstoff in Pflanze und Boden während der Vegetationsperiode Aus Wintergetreideversuchen ist bekannt, daß zur Ernte die Wiederfindung von Düngerstickstoff aus der Andüngung (Bestockung, [GS-Skala nach Zadok] GS 25) im Aufwuchs und in mineralischer Form im Boden (Nmin) niedriger ist als die von Düngerstickstoff der Schosser-und Ährengaben. Dies kann auf höhere Verluste bzw. eine höhere Immobilisation von Düngerstickstoff zwischen GS 25 und Schoßbeginn zurückgeführt werden, da hier die N-Aufnahme der Pflanzen im Vergleich zu späteren Wachstumsstadien gering ist. Daraus wurde abgeleitet, daß eine Erhöhung der Pflanzendichte zu einer erhöhten Aufnahme von früh gedüngtem N führen könnte, so daß weniger Dünger-N für Verlust- und Immobilisationsprozesse im Boden verbleibt. Unterschiedliche Pflanzendichten wurden durch unterschiedliche Aussaatstärken im Herbst erreicht (Slow= 100 Körner m,2, Scfp [herkömmliche Praxis]= 375 Körner m,2, Shigh= 650 Körner m,2). In der folgenden Vegetationsperiode wurde der Einfluß der verschiedenen Aussaatstärken auf die N-Aufnahme, die apparente Wiederfindung von Dünger-N (aFNrec = N in gedüngten , N in ungedüngten Prüfgliedern) in Pflanzen und Nmin, sowie auf potentielle Verluste und Immobilisation von Dünger-N (N-Defizit = N-Düngung , aFNrec) für zwei Phasen im Zeitraum zwischen der ersten N-Gabe (GS 25) und der Schossergabe zu GS 31 (d. h. zwischen GS 25 und 15 Tagen später [GS 25 + 15d] und von GS 25 + 15d bis GS 31), sowie zwischen GS 31 und der Ernte (d. h. nach der zweiten und dritten N-Gabe) untersucht. Die N-Düngung variierte zu den Terminen GS 25 (0, 43, 103 kg N ha,1), GS 31 (0, 30 kg N ha,1) und zum Ährenschieben (0, 30, 60 kg N ha,1). Unabhängig von der Aussaatstärke war das N-Defizit zum Termin GS 25 + 15d am höchsten (bis zu 33 kg N ha,1 und 74 kg N ha,1 bei einer N-Düngung von 43 bzw. 103 kg N ha,1), da die N-Aufnahme durch die Pflanzen während der Bestockungsphase am geringsten war. Das N-Defizit zeigt vornehmlich immobilisierten N an, da zu späteren Terminen eine Re-Mobilisation von N auftrat. Zwischen GS 31 und der Ernte wurden für die Aussaatstärke Slow die geringsten Aufnahmeraten von Düngerstickstoff aus der Schosser- und Ährengabe errechnet, so daß für Slow die höchsten N-Defizitmengen ermittelt wurden. Obwohl die N-Defizitmengen für Scfp und Shigh annähernd gleich waren, wurden bei N-Düngung von 43 + 30 + 60 kg N ha,1 für Scfp die höchsten Kornerträge erzielt. Diese Kombination von Aussaatstärke und N-Düngung kann als praxisüblich bezeichnet werden. Für Shigh wurden vermutlich niedrigere Kornerträge erzielt, weil die Konkurrenz um Nährstoffe und Wasser zwischen den Pflanzen aufgrund der hohen Pflanzendichte am intensivsten war. Die Ergebnisse lassen den Schluß zu, daß eine Verringerung oder Erhöhung der Pflanzendichte über entsprechende Aussaatstärken nicht zu einer Reduktion der Dünger-N-Immobilisation (oder von N-Verlusten) führt und demnach auch nicht die Dünger-N-Ausnutzung durch die Bestände erhöht wird. [source] Conditionality covenants: Commitment versus discretion in sovereign credit contractsJOURNAL OF INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT, Issue 4 2010Sherif Khalifa Abstract This paper investigates the impact of imposing conditionality covenants on the performance of the signatories to a sovereign credit contract. A two period model is developed in which creditors provide a loan to a sovereign conditional upon the implementation of investments. Commitment to these covenants overcome the debt repudiation problem, as it increases the likelihood of repayment, if the implemented conditionalities contribute to an increase in the sovereign's productive capacity. A three period model is also developed to entertain the possibility that the sovereign engage in credit activities in subsequent periods, where in the final period the debtor has obligations towards junior and senior creditors. This allows for dynamic inconsistency, as the sovereign may be tempted to increase its debt in the second period, thus increasing the probability of repudiation in the third period. Imposing conditionality covenants by senior creditors that increase the portion they can appropriate in case of repudiation, relative to junior creditors, reduces the supply of credit by junior creditors in the second period and thus overcomes the debt dilution problem. [source] Randomised controlled trial of the effects of two rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lens materials and two surface cleaners on straylight valuesOPHTHALMIC AND PHYSIOLOGICAL OPTICS, Issue 5 2009Marten F. Fortuin Abstract Purpose:, In a double-masked randomized controlled crossover study we investigated both the retinal responses to straylight, and the effects of lens cleaners on straylight values, in two different RGP contact lens materials. Methods:, Thirty patients (20,59 years) wearing RGP lenses were refitted with new lenses made of Boston XO material in one eye and made of Comfort O2 (ONSI-56) material in the other eye. Reported wetting angles for the Boston XO material (103°) and for the ONSI-56 material (7.2°) were obtained by sessile drop measurements. After refitting, the study comprised three 5-week trial periods. In Period 1 half of the participants (Group A) wore Boston XO lenses in their right eye and Comfort O2 (ONSI-56) lenses in their left eye, and the other half (Group B) vice versa. In Period 2 Group A wore Comfort O2 (ONSI-56) lenses in their right eye and Boston XO lenses in their left, and Group B vice versa. All participants used Miraflow cleaner during periods 1 and 2. In Period 3, during which all participants used Boston cleaner, Group A wore Boston XO lenses in their right eye and Comfort O2 (ONSI-56) lenses in their left eye and Group B vice versa. Straylight data (log S) were obtained with and without contact lenses using the Oculus C-Quant straylight meter in all three periods. Central corneal thickness (CCT) was measured in the second and third periods. Results:, When not wearing lenses (n = 60 eyes) at the end of the second 5 week trial period straylight was measured twice with averages of 1.07 log S, and the corrected CCT measurements averaged 546 ,m. Straylight values with Comfort O2 (ONSI-56) reached 1.15 log S at the end of both the second (n = 25 eyes) and third periods (n = 23 eyes). Straylight values with Boston XO were 1.17 log S (n = 26 eyes) at the end of the second period, and 1.16 log S (n = 25 eyes) at the end of the third period. Conclusions:, Existing RGP lens wearers refitted with new lenses with different contact angles, made of Boston XO and Comfort O2 (ONSI-56) showed, over three 5 week periods, relatively small increases in straylight, which were functionally comparable, irrespective of the type of lens material or lens cleaner used. At every visit, straylight values and CCTs returned to baseline levels after RGP lens removal, confirming that the straylight fluctuations were mainly due to scattering from the RGP lenses; or tear film interaction; or a combination of both. [source] Prolonged exposure to inhaled nitric oxide transiently modifies tubular function in healthy piglets and promotes tubular apoptosisACTA PHYSIOLOGICA, Issue 4 2009W. Go, dzik Abstract Aim:, Inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) is a selective pulmonary vasodilator. We hypothesized that those piglets exposed to prolonged iNO react with a modified renal function. Methods:, Randomized, placebo-controlled exposure to 40 p.p.m. iNO (30 h) in piglets (n = 20). Plasma and urine were sampled during three periods (first and second 12 h periods, and finally a 6 h period). We measured urine volumes, plasma and urine electrolytes (UNa, UK, UCl), plasma creatinine and urea. We calculated creatinine clearance (Ccr), and fractional excretions of sodium and potassium (FENa, FEK) and urinary excretions of electrolytes (UENa, UEK, UECl). Haemodynamic data were recorded and renal tubular apoptosis detected. Results:, For the first 12 h, certain parameters significantly increased in the iNO group (mean ± SD): UNa (mmol L,1), 87.7 (±35.0) vs. 39.3 (±22.9), UCl (mmol L,1) 80.4 (±32.8) vs. 48.0 (±26.7), FENa (%) 2.1 (±0.8) vs. 0.7 (±0.5), FEK (%) 31.7 (±7.0) vs. 20.7 (±12.3), as well as UENa (mmol) 61.0 (±21.1) vs. 27.6 (±17.9) and UECl (mmol) 57.3 (24.5) vs. 37.6 (29.0). These changes were absent in the second and third periods of the study. Significant differences in percentage of apoptotic cell nuclei in the renal cortex and medulla were found after iNO exposure: 39% vs. 15%. Conclusion:, Exposure to 40 p.p.m. iNO in healthy anaesthetized piglets has a transient natriuretic effect that disappears after 12 h. We also found evidence of renal tubular apoptosis promotion after 30 h of iNO. [source] Evaluating the Impact of an Educational Intervention on Documentation of Decision-making Capacity in an Emergency Medical Services SystemACADEMIC EMERGENCY MEDICINE, Issue 7 2004Jennifer Riley MD Abstract Objectives: To compare the documentation of decision-making capacity by advanced life support (ALS) providers and signature acquisition before, one month after, and one year after an educational intervention. Methods:The intervention comprised a one-and-a-half-hour module on assessment and documentation of decision-making capacity. Ambulance call reports were reviewed for all ALS calls occurring during three two-month periods, and refusals of transport were recorded. Provider compliance with documentation of decision-making capacity and signature acquisition were determined from a convenience sample of 75 reports from each period. Reviewers were blinded to study period. Twenty-percent double data entry was undertaken to evaluate accuracy. Ninety-five percent confidence intervals were calculated to compare frequencies of cancelled calls and documentation. Results: From the emergency medical services database, 7,744 calls before the intervention, 7,444 immediately after, and 7,604 one year later were identified. Documentation rates in the second and third periods did not differ from that prior to the intervention (1.3% vs. 0.0% and 0.0% in subsequent periods), nor did the rates of signature acquisition differ (85.3% vs. 85.3% and 78.6%). The accuracy of data entry was 92.6%. However, the frequency of call refusals decreased significantly after the intervention (from 9.0% to 2.0% and 6.6% in the respective periods). Conclusions: An educational intervention resulted in no change in the rate of decision-making capacity documentation or signature acquisition by ALS providers for refusal of transport. There was a temporary increase in the number of transported patients. [source] Role of antiretroviral therapies in mucocutaneous manifestations in HIV-infected children over a period of two decadesBRITISH JOURNAL OF DERMATOLOGY, Issue 2 2005E. Seoane Reula Summary Background, Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection causes a severe cellular immunodeficiency, which results in a greater susceptibility to infectious, inflammatory and malignant conditions. Among these, pathologies of the skin seem to be those most frequently observed in HIV+ patients. However, there are few reports on how antiretroviral therapy affects skin disorders in HIV-infected children. Objective, To study the incidence and prevalence of skin disorders in a cohort of HIV-infected children, in relation to the antiviral therapy [nontreated, monotherapy, combined therapy and highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART)] received, and their impact on immunological and virological markers. The treatments were those available in different calendar periods in the history of antiviral treatment. Materials and methods, A retrospective, observational study in a cohort of 210 HIV-infected children was carried out. These children were followed up every 3 months throughout 22 years. The viral load (HIV RNA copies mL,1) was quantified using reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and the viral phenotype of HIV-1 isolates was determined by in vitro culture. T-lymphocyte subsets in peripheral blood were quantified by flow cytometry. Results, Mucocutaneous manifestations were diagnosed in 17% of the untreated infected children. Of the treated children in different treatment periods, 22% in the monotherapy period, 25% in the combined therapy period but only 10% on HAART had some type of mucocutaneous manifestation, concordant with a higher number of CD4+ T cells, a lower viral load and less cytopathic virus in the last group. Mucocutaneous manifestations of infectious aetiology were most frequently observed; they were detected in 13% of the children during the first calendar period (untreated children), 16% during the second and third periods (monotherapy and combined therapy) and only 5% in the last period (HAART). Interestingly, syncytium-inducing virus was present in 69% of all children with mucocutaneous manifestations of infectious aetiology. Conclusion, Only in the last calendar period (HAART) was a significant decrease observed in the prevalence of mucocutaneous manifestations with HIV infection associated with an increase in CD4+ T cells. In addition, we found a strong association between children who had mucocutaneous manifestations with an infectious aetiology and a more cytopathic (X4/SI) viral phenotype. [source] |
