Abstract A major, and essential, part of the diagnostic process for pulp disease is the use of pulp sensibility tests. When diagnosing pulp pain, these tests can be used to reproduce the symptoms reported by the patient to diagnose the diseased tooth as well as the disease state. However, a major shortcoming with these tests is that they only indirectly provide an indication of the state of the pulp by measuring a neural response rather than the vascular supply, so both false positive and false negative results can occur. The relevant literature on pulp sensibility tests in the context of endodontics up to January 2009 was reviewed using PubMed and MEDLINE database searches. This search identified papers published between November 1964 and January 2009 in all languages. Thermal tests have been used as an integral part of dental examinations. Two types of thermal tests are available, one uses a cold stimulus and the other uses a hot stimulus, and each has various methods of delivery. If these tests are used properly, injury to the pulp is highly unlikely. A review of the literature regarding the rationale, indications, limitations, and interpretation of thermal tests, the value of these diagnostic tests, as well as a discussion of the important points about each of these tests is presented. Calil Abstract Aim, To evaluate the use of pulse oximetry as a test for pulp vitality, by comparing in the same patient, the levels of oxygen saturation of the index finger and of the maxillary central incisor and canine teeth without clinically detectable pulp inflammation. Methodology, Seventeen male and female patients aged between 26 and 38 years participated and a total of 32 maxillary central incisor and 32 canine teeth were analysed. Selection criteria required the teeth to have healthy crowns, or with restorations no more than 2 mm in diameter and no clinical and radiographical signs or symptoms of pulp or periapical inflammatory changes. The negative control group consisted of 10 root filled teeth. Measurements were first taken from the index finger of patients. Their teeth were then subjected to a thermal test with refrigerant gas and then to a vitality test with pulse oximetry. Data were analysed by Pearson's and paired t- tests. Results, There were no significant statistical correlations between blood oxygen levels in the index finger and in the teeth of the patient (P > 0.05). There was a statistically significant difference in the oxygen levels between the two tooth groups studied and the index finger (P , 0.002). Mean oxygen values in the index finger of patients were 95% (SD = 1.6), oxygen values in the maxillary central incisor were 91.29% (SD = 2.61) and mean oxygen values in maxillary canine were 90.69% (SD = 2.71). Conclusion, The method determined consistently the level of blood oxygen saturation of the pulp in maxillary central incisor and canine teeth and can therefore be used for pulp vitality testing. Further studies are required to assess the effectiveness and validity of pulse oximetry in determining pulp vitality in traumatized teeth. This study investigated in the rat the impact of ageing on the antinociceptive effect of reference analgesics, acetaminophen (50, 100, 200, 400 mg kg,1 po), aspirin (50, 100, 200, 400 mg kg,1 sc), clomipramine (5, 10, 20, 40 mg kg,1 sc) and morphine (1.25, 2.5, 5, 10 mg kg,1 sc). Lou/c rats were chosen because they provide a model of healthy ageing and they do not develop obesity with age. Three groups of 40 rats each (mature (4 months), middle-aged (18 months) and old (26 months)), were treated with each drug at 14 days interval. Two tests were used: a thermal test (tail immersion in 48°C water and measurement of reaction latency) and a mechanical test (paw pressure and measurement of struggle threshold). Results confirm the increased mechanical sensitivity to pain and no change in thermal sensitivity for old rats compared to mature and middle-aged animals. They show a marked decrease in the effect of morphine with age and no age-related effect for acetaminophen, aspirin or clomipramine. Plasma levels of morphine and metabolites are not different in the three age groups. It is likely that the influence of age on morphine analgesia is linked mainly to pharmacodynamic rather than pharmacokinetic changes.
