Selected AbstractsReflections of Two Trainees: Person-of-the-Therapist Training for Marriage and Family TherapistsJOURNAL OF MARITAL AND FAMILY THERAPY, Issue 4 2009Lauren Lutz In this article we share our personal and professional experiences, struggles, and growth, as former trainees of the Person-of-the-Therapist Training pilot study, conducted during our master's coursework in the Couple and Family Therapy Department at Drexel University. We include our perceptions of the training process in vivo, the challenges and benefits of doing this work in an academic setting, case examples to convey our journey of personal discovery, and the use of what we learned about ourselves in our development as therapists. This development includes a deepening of awareness of self in our relationship and work with our clients, a greater ability to work with both our personal assets and vulnerabilities, as well as the acquisition of skills to actively and purposefully use our entire person diagnostically and therapeutically in our work with clients. [source] Training the Person of the Therapist in an Academic SettingJOURNAL OF MARITAL AND FAMILY THERAPY, Issue 4 2009Harry J. Aponte Drexel University's Couple and Family Therapy Department recently introduced a formal course on training the person of a therapist. The course is based on Aponte's Person-of-the-Therapist Training Model that up until now has only been applied in private, nonacademic institutes with postgraduate therapists. The model attempts to put into practice a philosophy that views the full person of therapists, and their personal vulnerabilities in particular, as the central tool through which therapists do their work in the context of the client,therapist relationship. This article offers a description of how this model has been tested with a group of volunteer students, and subsequently what had to be considered to formally structure the training into the Drexel curriculum. [source] New graduate therapists in acute care hospitals: Priorities, problems and strategies for departmental actionAUSTRALIAN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY JOURNAL, Issue 4 2004Anne Cusick This study presents findings from an action research study of occupational therapists working in one acute care university-affiliated hospital department to ascertain their views regarding new graduates (NG). The aim of the study was to inform decisions regarding the development of NG support strategies to enhance organisational effectiveness. Twenty-four department participants identified 56 issues they perceived were important for NG. These were in four areas: (i) retention of NG staff; (ii) NG function in clinical roles; (iii) NG function in the occupational therapy department; and (iv) whose problem was it (NG themselves or staff already in the department that NGs join). A delphi survey was then conducted with 27 participants to identify which of the 56 issues were priorities. Fifteen issues of importance were identified and examples of departmental strategies, which were developed in response to these priorities, are described. Recommendations for application of action research approach as a change strategy in occupational therapy departments and further suggestions for research are made. [source] The reliability and validity of patient self-rating of their own voice qualityCLINICAL OTOLARYNGOLOGY, Issue 4 2005M. Lee Objectives:, To provide preliminary data on the reliability and validity of dysphonic patients rating their own voice quality. Design:, Prospective reliability/validity assessment of voice ratings in dysphonic patients. Setting:, The Royal Free Hampstead NHS Primary Care Trust. Participants:, Thirty-five adult dysphonia patients recruited from ENT referrals to a speech and language therapy department. Exclusion criteria were (i) a hearing impairment which may affect auditory discrimination and (ii) a diagnosis of cognitive impairment which may affect task comprehension. Main outcome measures:, Patient intra-rater reliability was assessed by test,retest ratings, using G (Grade), R (Rough), B (Breathy), A (Asthenic), S (Strained) (GRBAS). Validity was assessed by comparing (i) patient,clinician inter-rater reliability, (ii) patients' GRBAS ratings with their Vocal Performance Questionnaire (VPQ) responses. Result:, (i) Patients had lower intrarater reliability than clinicians (for G of GRBAS, kappa = 0.51 versus 0.74); (ii) patients consistently rated their voices more severely than clinicians (for G of GRBAS, mean rating = 1.4 versus 1.0); (iii) clinician,patient inter-rater agreement was no better than chance (paired t -test, all P < 0.05); (iv) patient ratings correlated significantly with vocal performance scores (r > 0.4, P < 0.05). Conclusions:, Patients appear to have good validity and consistency using GRBAS as a self-perception tool. However, validity measured in terms of agreement with clinician ratings is poor. Voice patients may rate what they perceive rather than what they hear. Disagreement between patient and clinician ratings has implications for therapy aims, prognosis, patient expectations and outcomes. Where disagreement persists, the clinician may have to determine whether therapy priorities need redesigning to reflect patients' perceived needs, or to evaluate whether patient perceptions and expectations are unrealistic. [source] Lived experiences of eating problems for patients with head and neck cancer during radiotherapyJOURNAL OF CLINICAL NURSING, Issue 4 2003Maria Larsson MNSc Summary ,,Only a small proportion of cancer patients undergo radical radiotherapy to the head and neck, but their needs are particularly complex. Although extensive research describes the side-effects of radiotherapy to the head and neck, few studies focus on patients' subjective experiences of eating problems and the impact these have on the patients' daily life. ,,In this study a phenomenological approach was used, as the purpose was to acquire deeper understanding of head and neck cancer patients' lived experiences of eating problems, their consequences in daily life and patients' strategies of coping with these problems. ,,Eight patients from two radiation therapy departments in mid-Sweden were interviewed in an open dialogue. Data analysis was based on Colaizzi's method. ,,Eating problems experienced were captured in two interrelated main themes: ,Ability to chew and swallow' and ,Will and desire to eat'. The eating problems were found to cause a number of severe consequences in daily life. These are incorporated into one main theme: ,The way of life is disturbed'. Ways to cope with this disturbance were captured in one main theme: ,Trying to see the end , To survive'. ,,This study identifies the need to view eating problems as a complex phenomenon in a specific context including the individual patient's life situation. The findings create the opportunity to develop nursing interventions based on patients' own needs. To facilitate this, a specialist nurse should be responsible for reviewing patients regularly throughout radiation therapy. Intervention studies are needed to provide optimal clinical guidelines.
