Terahertz Photonic Crystals Based on Barium Titanate/Polymer Nanocomposites,

ADVANCED MATERIALS, Issue 19 2008
Joseph Lott
Polymeric materials with engineered refractive indices for applications in the THz regime can be fabricated and processed by conventional melt-processing of inorganic nanomaterials and conventional host polymers. The approach opens up new opportunities for the creation of optical elements to manipulate the technologically relevant THz radiation, for example photonic crystals. [source]

Coherence control of electron spin currents in semiconductors

PHYSICA STATUS SOLIDI (B) BASIC SOLID STATE PHYSICS, Issue 10 2006

Abstract We provide an overview of some of our recent work on the use of one color and two color optical techniques to generate and control electronic spin currents in semiconductors for which a spin, orbit interaction exists. The generation process relies on the quantum interference between different absorption pathways, such as that between single and two photon absorption or those involving different polarization states of a monochromatic beam. For different crystal orientations and/or beam polarizations it is possible to generate a spin current with or without an electric current, and an electrical current with or without a spin current. In our experiments, which are conducted either at 80 K or 295 K, we typically employ nominally 100 fs pulses centered near 1500 and 750 nm. The currents generated are quasi-ballistic and the carriers typically move distances of ,1,10 nm, determined by the momentum relaxation time, which is of the order of 100 fs. The transient characteristics of spin-polarized electrical currents generated in strained GaAs at room temperature by ,100 fs pulses is detected by the emitted THz radiation. Pure spin currents can be detected by taking advantage of the accumulation of up and down spins on opposite sides of tightly focused pump beams. The spin states are detected through differential transmission measurements of tightly focused right and left circularly polarized, near-band-edge probe pulses, delayed by several picoseconds from the pump pulses to allow carrier thermalization to occur. By spatial scanning across the differential spin profiles and determining the amplitude of the response we are able to translate this into nm spatial resolution of spin displacement. Finally, the ability to generate ballistic currents using purely optical techniques allows us to generate transverse Hall-like currents, with transverse charge currents generated from pure spin currents and transverse spin currents generated from pure charge currents. Effects of 100 GHz radiation on alkaline phosphatase activity and antigen, antibody interaction,

BIOELECTROMAGNETICS, Issue 3 2009
A. Homenko
Abstract Equipment that generates microwave radiation (MWR) spanning the frequency range of 300 MHz,100 GHz is becoming more common. While MWR lacks sufficient energy to break chemical bonds, the disagreement as to whether MWR exposure is detrimental to cellular dysfunction may be difficult to clarify using complex systems such as whole animals, cells, or cell extracts. Recently, the high frequency range of terahertz (THz) radiation has been explored and sources of radiation and its detectors have been developed. THz radiation is associated with the frequency interval from 100 GHz to 20 THz and constitutes the next frontier in imaging science and technology. In the present study, we investigated the effect of radiation in the low frequency THz range (100 GHz) on two defined molecular interactions. First, the interaction of soluble or immobilized calf alkaline phosphatase with the substrate p -nitrophenylphosphate and second, the interaction between an antibody (mouse monoclonal anti-DNP) and its antigen (DNP). Irradiation of enzyme either prior to addition of substrate or during the enzymatic reaction resulted in small but significant reductions in enzyme activity. These differences were not observed if the enzyme had previously been immobilized onto plastic microwells. Exposure of immobilized antigen to radiation did not influence the ability of the antigen to interact with antibody. However, irradiation appeared to decrease the stability of previously formed antigen, antibody complexes. Our data suggest that 100 GHz radiation can induce small but statistically significant alterations in the characteristics of these two types of biomolecular interactions. Nitride based nanotransistors as new sources and detectors of THz radiations

PHYSICA STATUS SOLIDI (C) - CURRENT TOPICS IN SOLID STATE PHYSICS, Issue 6 2008

Abstract The plasma waves in gated two-dimensional electron gas have a linear dispersion law, similar to the sound waves. The transistor channel is acting as a resonator cavity for the plasma waves, which can reach frequencies in the Terahertz (THz) range for a sufficiently short gate length Field Effect Transistors (FETs). THz emission and detection by nanometer III-V transistors have been recently reported. In this work we report on THz emission and detection by nanometer GaN/AlGaN HEMTs. In particular, we show that specific GaN properties allow to observe THz emission up to room temperature. (© 2008 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim) [source]
