    Cytotoxicity and Cell Cycle Effects of Bare and Poly(vinyl alcohol)-Coated Iron Oxide Nanoparticles in Mouse Fibroblasts

    Super-paramagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) are recognized as powerful biocompatible materials for use in various biomedical applications, such as drug delivery, magnetic-resonance imaging, cell/protein separation, hyperthermia and transfection. This study investigates the impact of high concentrations of SPIONs on cytotoxicity and cell-cycle effects. The interactions of surface-saturated (via interactions with cell medium) bare SPIONs and those coated with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with adhesive mouse fibroblast cells (L929) are investigated using an MTT assay. The two SPION formulations are synthesized using a co-precipitation method. The bare and coated magnetic nanoparticles with passivated surfaces both result in changes in cell morphology, possibly due to clustering through their magnetostatic effect. At concentrations ranging up to 80,×,10,3,M, cells exposed to the PVA-coated nanoparticles demonstrate high cell viability without necrosis and apoptosis. In contrast, significant apoptosis is observed in cells exposed to bare SPIONs at a concentration of 80,×,10,3,M. Nanoparticle exposure (20,80,×,10,3,M) leads to variations in both apoptosis and cell cycle, possibly due to irreversible DNA damage and repair of oxidative DNA lesions, respectively. Additionally, the formation of vacuoles within the cells and granular cells indicates autophagy cell death rather than either apoptosis or necrosis. [source]


    Chemical Bonding of Fullerene and Fluorinated Fullerene on Bare and Hydrogenated Diamond

    Abstract We investigate the interface between a C60 fullerite film, C60F36, and diamond (100) by using core-level photoemission spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). We show that C60 can be covalently bonded to reconstructed C(100)-2×1 and that the bonded interface is sufficiently robust to exhibit characteristic C60 redox peaks in solution. The bare diamond surface can be passivated against oxidation and hydrogenation by covalently bound C60. However, C60F36 is not as stable as C60 and desorbs below 300,°C (the latter species being stable up to 500,°C on the diamond surface). Neither C60 fullerite nor C60F36 form reactive interfaces on the hydrogenated surface,they both desorb below 300,°C. The surface transfer doping process of hydrogenated diamond by C60F36 is the most evident one among all the adsorbate systems studied (with a coverage-dependent band bending induced by C60F36).     Suspended sediment transport in a small Mediterranean agricultural catchment

    Abstract The aim of this study is to analyze suspended sediment transport in a Mediterranean agricultural catchment under traditional soil and water conservation practices. Field measurements were conducted in Can Revull, a small ephemeral catchment (1.03 km2) on the island of Mallorca. This study uses continuous turbidity records to analyse suspended sediment transport regimes, construct and interpret multiple regression models of total suspended sediment concentration (SSC) and of SSC related to stormflow discharge, and assess the sediment loads and yields of three hydrological years (2004,2005 to 2006,2007). An annual average SSC of 17.3 mg l,1, with a maximum of 2270 mg l,1, was recorded in the middle of the winter period when rainfall intensities are high and headwater slopes are ploughed and thus bare. Strong seasonal contrasts of baseflow dynamics associated with different degrees of dilution provide a large scatter in SSC and in the derived rating curves, reflecting that other factors control the supply of suspended sediment. Multiple regression models identify rainfall intensity as the most significant variable in sediment supply. However, under baseflow conditions, physical and biological processes generate sediment in the channel that is subsequently removed during high flow. In contrast, when baseflow is not present, rainfall intensity is the only process that supplies sediment to the channel, mostly from hillslopes. Considering the study period as average in terms of total annual rainfall and intensities, suspended sediment yields were an order of magnitude lower than those obtained in other Mediterranean catchments, a factor that can be related to the historical use of soil conservation practices.     Concentrated flow erosion rates reduced through biological geotextiles

    Abstract Soil erosion by concentrated flow can cause serious environmental damage. Erosion-control geotextiles have considerable potential for reducing concentrated flow erosion. However, limited data are available on the erosion-reducing potential of geotextiles. In this study, the effectiveness of three biological geotextiles in reducing soil losses during concentrated flow is investigated. Hereto, runoff was simulated in a concentrated flow flume, filled with an erodible sandy loam on three slope gradients (13·5, 27·0 and 41·5%). Treatments included three biological geotextiles (borassus, buriti and bamboo) and one bare soil surface. Darcy,Weisbach friction coefficients ranged from 0·01 to 2·84. The highest values are observed for borassus covered soil surfaces, followed by buriti, bamboo and bare soil, respectively. The friction coefficients are linearly correlated with geotextile thickness. For the specific experimental conditions of this study, borassus geotextiles reduced soil detachment rate on average to 56%, buriti geotextiles to 59% and bamboo geotextiles to 66% of the soil detachment rate for bare soil surfaces. Total flow shear stress was the hydraulic parameter best predicting soil detachment rate for bare and geotextile covered surfaces (R2 = 0·75,0·84, p <0·001, n = 12,15). The highest resistance against soil detachment was observed for the borassus covered soil surfaces, followed by buriti, bamboo and bare soil surfaces, respectively.     Modelling increased soil cohesion due to roots with EUROSEM

    Abstract As organic root exudates cause soil particles to adhere firmly to root surfaces, roots significantly increase soil strength and therefore also increase the resistance of the topsoil to erosion by concentrated flow. This paper aims at contributing to a better prediction of the root effects on soil erosion rates in the EUROSEM model, as the input values accounting for roots, presented in the user manual, do not account for differences in root density or root architecture. Recent research indicates that small changes in root density or differences in root architecture considerably influence soil erosion rates during concentrated flow. The approach for incorporating the root effects into this model is based on a comparison of measured soil detachment rates for bare and for root-permeated topsoil samples with predicted erosion rates under the same flow conditions using the erosion equation of EUROSEM. Through backwards calculation, transport capacity efficiencies and corresponding soil cohesion values can be assessed for bare and root-permeated topsoils respectively. The results are promising and present soil cohesion values that are in accordance with reported values in the literature for the same soil type (silt loam). The results show that grass roots provide a larger increase in soil cohesion as compared with tap-rooted species and that the increase in soil cohesion is not significantly different under wet and dry soil conditions, either for fibrous root systems or for tap root systems. Power and exponential relationships are established between measured root density values and the corresponding calculated soil cohesion values, reflecting the effects of roots on the resistance of the topsoil to concentrated flow incision. These relationships enable one to incorporate the root effect into the soil erosion model EUROSEM, through adapting the soil cohesion input value. A scenario analysis shows that the contribution of roots to soil cohesion is very important for preventing soil loss and reducing runoff volume. The increase in soil shear strength due to the binding effect of roots on soil particles is two orders of magnitude lower as compared with soil reinforcement achieved when roots mobilize their tensile strength during soil shearing and root breakage.     Effects of spatially structured vegetation patterns on hillslope erosion in a semiarid Mediterranean environment: a simulation study

    Abstract A general trend of decreasing soil loss rates with increasing vegetation cover fraction is widely accepted. Field observations and experimental work, however, show that the form of the cover-erosion function can vary considerably, in particular for low cover conditions that prevail on arid and semiarid hillslopes. In this paper the structured spatial distribution of the vegetation cover and associated soil attributes is proposed as one of the possible causes of variation in cover,erosion relationships, in particular in dryland environments where patchy vegetation covers are common. A simulation approach was used to test the hypothesis that hillslope discharge and soil loss could be affected by variation in the spatial correlation structure of coupled vegetation cover and soil patterns alone. The Limburg Soil Erosion Model (LISEM) was parameterized and verified for a small catchment with discontinuous vegetation cover at Rambla Honda, SE Spain. Using the same parameter sets LISEM was subsequently used to simulate water and sediment fluxes on 1 ha hypothetical hillslopes with simulated spatial distributions of vegetation and soil parameters. Storms of constant rainfall intensity in the range of 30,70 mm h,1 and 10,30 min duration were applied. To quantify the effect of the spatial correlation structure of the vegetation and soil patterns, predicted discharge and soil loss rates from hillslopes with spatially structured distributions of vegetation and soil parameters were compared with those from hillslopes with spatially uniform distributions. The results showed that the spatial organization of bare and vegetated surfaces alone can have a substantial impact on predicted storm discharge and erosion. In general, water and sediment yields from hillslopes with spatially structured distributions of vegetation and soil parameters were greater than from identical hillslopes with spatially uniform distributions. Within a storm the effect of spatially structured vegetation and soil patterns was observed to be highly dynamic, and to depend on rainfall intensity and slope gradient.     Waterponding: Reclamation technique for scalded duplex soils in western New South Wales rangelands

    Summary Building on previous trials initiated in the 1960s, a demonstration programme involving 18 landholders was established at Nyngan, New South Wales Australia; in the mid-1980s to refine ,waterponding' techniques used to rehabilitate scalded claypans. The waterponding technique involves building horseshoe shaped banks (about 240 m in length) to create ponds of about 0.4 ha each. Each pond retains up to 10 cm of water after rain which leaches soluble salts from the scald surface. This improves the remaining soil structure, inducing surface cracking, better water penetration and allows entrapment of wind-blown seed. Consequently, niches are formed for the germination of this (and any sown) seed and recovery of a range of chenopod native pasture species occurs on the sites, which can be supplemented by direct seeding. What started as a project continues now as a standard rangeland rehabilitation process for reclaiming bare, scalded semi-arid areas of New South Wales and turning them back into biodiverse and productive rangelands. Since 1985, further modifications have been made to the method and the ongoing programme has surveyed, marked out and built approximately 56 700 waterponds within the Marra Creek waterponding district.     Simultaneous Determination of Ascorbic Acid, Dopamine and Uric Acid at Pt Nanoparticles Decorated Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes Modified GCE

    Abstract A modified electrode was fabricated by electrochemically deposition of Pt nanoparticles on the multiwall carbon nanotube covered glassy carbon electrode (Pt nanoparticles decorated MWCNT/GCE). A higher catalytic activity was obtained to electrocatalytic oxidation of ascorbic acid, dopamine, and uric acid due to the enhanced peak current and well-defined peak separations compared with both, bare and MWCNT/GCE. The electrode surfaces were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Individual and simultaneous determination of AA, DA, and UA were studied by differential pulse voltammetry. The detection limits were individually calculated for ascorbic acid, dopamine, and uric acid as being 1.9×10,5,M, 2.78×10,8,M, and 3.2×10,8,M, respectively. In simultaneous determination, LODs were calculated for AA, DA, and UA, as of 2×10,5,M, 4.83×10,8,M, and 3.5×10,7,M, respectively. [source]


    Alkanethiols Modified Gold Electrodes for Selective Detection of Molecules with Different Polarity and Molecular Size.

    Application to Vitamin B2 Analysis
    Abstract The cyclic voltammetry behavior of several molecules with different polarity and molecular size on gold electrodes modified with nonfunctionalized alkanethiols of different chain length, usually employed as chromatographic stationary phases, are studied. The redox systems hexacyanoferrate(II/III), ferrocene/ferrocine and hydroquinone/quinone are chosen as template molecules. As modifiers, ethanethiol, 1-octanethiol and di- n -octadecyldisulfide are selected. We can conclude that polar molecules can reach the electrode surface through channels created by the modifiers. However, when nonpolar compounds are analyzed, the nonpolar interactions between the analyte and the terminal group of the modifier lead to retention of the compound, retarding its arrival to the electrode surface. A molecule with polar and nonpolar part was used for the application of this conclusion. If the gold electrode is modified with di- n -octadecyldisulfide, the electrochemical behavior of vitamin B2 becomes simpler than that observed on a bare one. This result allows a sensitive and selective procedure to be developed for direct determination of vitamin B2 in pharmaceutical formulations. [source]


    Suppression of Premature Fracture of Silicon under Three-Point Bending: Role of Nanoscale Localized Deformation of Metallic Multilayered Coating,

    Brittle single crystal Si with and without Au/Cu multilayer coating was investigated via three-point bending test. Load-bearing capacity of the Si coated with the Au/Cu multilayer is improved evidently compared with the bare Si. Especially the nanoscale plastic deformation of the multilayer was observed to be effective in delaying instable crack propagation within the Si. That would shed significant light in toughening methods of brittle materials. [source]


    Microstructure and Microfabrication Considerations for Self-Supported On-Chip Ultra-Thin Micro-Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Membranes

    Abstract La0.6Sr0.4Co0.8Fe0.2O3,,,, (LSCF) has been sputtered on bare Si and Si3N4 and yttria-stabilised zirconia (YSZ) thin films to investigate annealing temperature- and thickness-dependent microstructure and functional properties, as well as their implications for designing failure-resistant micro-solid oxide fuel cell (,SOFC) membranes. The LSCF thin films crystallise in the 400,450,°C range; however, after annealing in the 600,700,°C range, cracks are observed. The formation of cracks is also thickness-dependent. High electrical conductivity, ,520,Scm,1 at 600,°C, and low activation energy, ,0.13,eV, in the 400,600,°C range, are still maintained for LSCF films as thin as 27,nm. Based on these studies, a strong correlation between microstructure and electrical conductivity has been observed and an annealing temperature-thickness design space that is complementary to temperature-stress design space has been proposed for designing reliable membranes using sputtered LSCF thin films. Microfabrication approaches that maintain the highest possible surface and interface quality of heterostructured membranes have been carefully examined. By taking advantage of the microstructure, microfabrication and geometrical structural considerations, we were able to successfully fabricate large-area, self-supported membranes. These results are also relevant to conventional or grid-supported SOFC membranes using ultrathin nanocrystalline cathodes and ,SOFCs using cathode thin films other than LSCF. [source]


    One-Pot Preparation of Polymer,Enzyme,Metallic Nanoparticle Composite Films for High-Performance Biosensing of Glucose and Galactose

    Abstract New polymer,enzyme,metallic nanoparticle composite films with a high-load and a high-activity of immobilized enzymes and obvious electrocatalysis/nano-enhancement effects for biosensing of glucose and galactose are designed and prepared by a one-pot chemical pre-synthesis/electropolymerization (CPSE) protocol. Dopamine (DA) as a reductant and a monomer, glucose oxidase (GOx) or galactose oxidase (GaOx) as the enzyme, and HAuCl4 or H2PtCl6 as an oxidant to trigger DA polymerization and the source of metallic nanoparticles, are mixed to yield polymeric bionanocomposites (PBNCs), which are then anchored on the electrode by electropolymerization of the remaining DA monomer. The prepared PBNC material has good biocompatibility, a highly uniform dispersion of the nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution, and high load/activity of the immobilized enzymes, as verified by transmission/scanning electron microscopy and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance. The thus-prepared enzyme electrodes show a largely improved amperometric biosensing performance, e.g., a very high detection sensitivity (99 or 129,µA cm,2 mM,1 for glucose for Pt PBNCs on bare or platinized Au), a sub-micromolar limit of detection for glucose, and an excellent durability, in comparison with those based on conventional procedures. Also, the PBNC-based enzyme electrodes work well in the second-generation biosensing mode. The proposed one-pot CPSE protocol may be extended to the preparation of many other functionalized PBNCs for wide applications. [source]


    2,7-Carbazolenevinylene-Based Oligomer Thin-Film Transistors: High Mobility Through Structural Ordering,

    Abstract We have fabricated organic field-effect transistors based on thin films of 2,7-carbazole oligomeric semiconductors 1,4-bis(vinylene-(N -hexyl-2-carbazole))phenylene (CPC), 1,4-bis(vinylene-(N,-methyl-7,-hexyl-2,-carbazole))benzene (RCPCR), N -hexyl-2,7-bis(vinylene-(N -hexyl-2-carbazole))carbazole (CCC), and N -methyl-2,7-bis(vinylene-(7-hexyl- N -methyl-2-carbazole))carbazole (RCCCR). The organic semiconductors are deposited by thermal evaporation on bare and chemically modified silicon dioxide surfaces (SiO2/Si) held at different temperatures varying from 25 to 200,°C during deposition. The resulting thin films have been characterized using UV-vis and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopies, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction, and the observed top-contact transistor performances have been correlated with thin-film properties. We found that these new ,-conjugated oligomers can form highly ordered structures and reach high hole mobilities. Devices using CPC as the active semiconductor have exhibited mobilities as high as 0.3,cm2,V,1,s,1 with on/off current ratios of up to 107. These features make CPC and 2,7-carbazolenevinylene-based oligomers attractive candidates for device applications. [source]


    1. NARRATIVE FORM AND HISTORICAL SENSATION: ON SAUL FRIEDLÄNDER'S THE YEARS OF EXTERMINATION,

    ABSTRACT Saul Friedländer's magnum opus, The Years of Extermination, has been received worldwide as an exemplary work of history. Yet it was written by a historian who in the last two decades has strenuously asserted the limits of Holocaust representation. At the center of this essay is a problem of historical writing: how to write a historical narrative of the Holocaust that both offers explanations of the unfolding events and also suggests that the most powerful sensation about those events, at the time and since, is that they are beyond words. I explore Friedländer's crafting of such a narrative by considering, first, the role of his attempt in The Years of Extermination to explain the Holocaust and, second, the narrative form of the book. The book is best seen, I argue, not primarily as a work of explanation but as a vast narrative that places an explanation of the Holocaust within a specific form of describing that goes beyond the boundaries of the historical discipline as it is usually practiced. This form of describing goes beyond the almost positivist attachment to facts that dominates current Holocaust historiography. By using Jewish individual testimonies that are interspersed in the chronological history of the extermination, Friedländer creates a narrative based on ruptures and breaks, devices we associate with works of fiction, and that historians do not usually use. The result is an arresting narrative, which I interpret by using Johan Huizinga's notion of historical sensation. Friedländer sees this narrative form as specific to the Holocaust. I view this commingling of irreducible reality and the possibility of art as a required sensibility that belongs to all historical understanding. And in this respect, The Years of Extermination only lays bare more clearly in the case of the Holocaust what is an essential element in all historical reconstruction. [source]


    Changes in hydrology and erosion over a transition from grassland to shrubland

    Abstract The degradation of grasslands is a common problem across semi-arid areas worldwide. Over the last 150 years, much of the south-western United States has experienced significant land degradation, with desert grasslands becoming dominated by shrubs and concurrent changes in runoff and erosion which are thought to propagate further the process of degradation. Plot-based experiments to determine how spatio-temporal characteristics of soil moisture, runoff and erosion change over a transition from grassland to shrubland were carried out at four sites over a transition from black grama (Bouteloua eriopoda) grassland to creosotebush (Larrea tridentata) shrubland at the Sevilleta NWR LTER site in New Mexico. Each site consisted of a 10 × 30 m bounded runoff plot and adjacent characterization plots with nested sampling points where soil moisture content was measured. Results show distinct spatio-temporal variations in soil moisture content, which are due to the net effect of processes operating at multiple spatial and temporal scales, such as plant uptake of water at local scales versus the redistribution of water during runoff events at the hillslope scale. There is an overall increase in runoff and erosion over the transition from grassland to shrubland, which is likely to be associated with an increase in connectivity of bare, runoff-generating areas, although these increases do not appear to follow a linear trajectory. Erosion rates increased over the transition from grassland to shrubland, likely related in part to changes in runoff characteristics and the increased capacity of the runoff to detach, entrain and transport sediment. Over all plots, fine material was preferentially eroded which has potential implications for nutrient cycling since nutrients tend to be associated with fine sediment.     Measurements of rain splash on bench terraces in a humid tropical steepland environment

    Abstract Soil loss continues to threaten Java's predominantly bench-terraced volcanic uplands. Sediment transport processes on back-sloping terraces with well-aggregated clay-rich oxisols in West Java were studied using two different techniques. Splash on bare, cropped, or mulched sub-horizontal (2,3°) terrace beds was studied using splash cups of different sizes, whereas transport of sediment on the predominantly bare and steep (30,40/deg ) terrace risers was measured using a novel device combining a Gerlach-type trough with a splash box to enable the separate measurement of transport by wash and splash processes. Measurements were made during two consecutive rainy seasons. The results were interpreted using a recently developed splash distribution theory and related to effective rainfall erosive energy. Splash transportability (i.e. transport per unit contour length and unit erosive energy) on the terrace risers was more than an order of magnitude greater than on bare terrace beds (0·39,0·57 versus 0·013,0·016 g m J,1). This was caused primarily by a greater average splash distance on the short, steep risers (>11 cm versus c. 1 cm on the beds). Splashed amounts were reduced by the gradual formation of a protective ,pavement' of coarser aggregates, in particular on the terrace beds. Soil aggregate size exhibited an inverse relationship with detachability (i.e. detachment per unit area and unit erosive energy) and average splash length, and therefore also with transportability, as did the degree of canopy and mulch cover. On the terrace risers, splash-creep and gravitational processes transported an additional 6,50% of measured rain splash, whereas transport by wash played a marginal role.     Infiltration, runoff and sediment production in blanket peat catchments: implications of field rainfall simulation experiments

    Abstract Blanket peat covers the headwaters of many major European rivers. Runoff production in upland blanket peat catchments is flashy with large flood peaks and short lag times; there is minimal baseflow. Little is known about the exact processes of infiltration and runoff generation within these upland headwaters. This paper presents results from a set of rainfall simulation experiments performed on the blanket peat moorland of the North Pennines, UK. Rainfall was simulated at low intensities (3,12 mm h,1), typical of natural rainfall, on bare and vegetated peat surfaces. Runoff response shows that infiltration rate increases with rainfall intensity; the use of low-intensity rainfall therefore allows a more realistic evaluation of infiltration rates and flow processes than previous studies. Overland flow is shown to be common on both vegetated and bare peat surfaces although surface cover does exert some control. Most runoff is produced within the top few centimetres of the peat and runoff response decreases rapidly with depth. Little vertical percolation takes place to depths greater than 10 cm owing to the saturation of the peat mass. This study provides evidence that the quickflow response of upland blanket peat catchments is a result of saturation-excess overland flow generation. Rainfall,runoff response from small plots varies with season. Following warm, dry weather, rainfall tends to infiltrate more readily into blanket peat, not just initially but to the extent that steady-state surface runoff rates are reduced and more flow takes place within the peat, albeit at shallow depth.     Anarchical Governance: Neoliberal Governmentality in Resonance with the State of Exception

    Beside the promotion of a politics of inclusion, implemented by governing at a distance, the global governmentality also promotes a politics of exclusion, such as establishing targeted governance that is aimed at deviant groups at the periphery of global politics. This highly disciplinary social control that is imposed upon the marginalized population sometimes leads to instances of the state of exception, in which people are forced to endure "bare lives." This kind of exception existing at the marginalized periphery of the neoliberal global governmentality becomes normal. This neoliberal governmentality creates an informal sector of an enormous scale, whose spatial representation is the global slum, and where vicious cycles of violence become normal. [source]


    What is the origin of the carabid beetle fauna of dry, anthropogenic habitats in western Europe?

    Abstract Aim To study the origin of the carabid beetle fauna of dry, open anthropogenic habitats. Location Various parts of Europe. Methods Collecting by hand in habitats influenced by humans (arable land, sand pits, ruderal places, road verges, meadows) and naturally open habitats such as talus, supralittoral sand dunes, alvar as well as littoral habitats in south and central Scandinavia. Studies made in other parts of Europe were included in the discussion. Results and conclusion The material comprises about 37,700 specimens. About 8% of the Scandinavian species occurring in anthropogenic habitats may have a littoral origin, about 10% may originate from forests whereas about 9% are euryoecious. A majority of the species (about 66%) originate from primarily open, dry habitats and many of them constitute a steppe or steppe-like element. They invaded the bare landscape soon after the deglaciation and probably survived in naturally open habitats (supralittoral sand dunes, talus, alvar, old riverbeds) during the postglacial warm period, but some species have a recent origin in Scandinavia.     Comparison study of Doppler ultrasound surveillance of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene-covered stent versus bare stent in transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt

    Abstract Objective. This prospectively randomized controlled study aimed to assess with Doppler ultrasound (US) the shunt function of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE)-covered transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) stent versus bare stent and to evaluate the usefulness of routine TIPS follow-up of ePTFE-covered stents. Methods. Sixty consecutive patients were randomized for bare or covered transjugular TIPS stenting in our institution between April 2007 and April 2009. Data of follow-up Doppler US, angiography, and portosystemic pressure gradient measurements were collected and analyzed. Results. The follow-up period was 8.34 ± 4.42 months in the bare-stent group and 6.16 ± 3.89 months in the covered-stent group. Baseline clinical characteristics were similar in both groups. Two hundred three US studies were performed in 60 patients, with a mean of 3.4 per patient, and demonstrated abnormalities in 28 patients (21 bare stents, 7 ePTFE-covered stents), 19 of them (13 in bare-stent group, 6 in covered-stent group) showing no clinical evidence of recurrence. Ten of 13 patients in the bare-stent group underwent balloon angioplasty or additional stent placement, whereas only one of six patients in the covered-stent group needed reintervention for intimal hyperplasia. The average peak velocity in the midshunt of ePTFE-covered stent was 139 ± 26 cm/s after TIPS creation and 125 ± 20 cm/s during follow-up, which was significantly higher than the bare-stent group (p < 0.05). The main portal vein and hepatic artery showed higher flow velocities in the ePTFE-covered stent group than in the bare-stent group. ePTFE-covered stents maintained lower portosystemic pressure gradient than bare stents (9.5 ± 2.9 versus 13.2 ± 1.5 mmHg, p < 0.05). Conclusions. ePTFE-covered stents resulted in higher patency rates and better hemodynamics than bare stents.     Preparation, characterisation and modification of carbon-based monolithic rods for chromatographic applications

    Abstract A range of porous carbon-based monolithic (PCM) rods with flow-through pore sizes of 1, 2, 5 and 10,,m, were produced using a silica particle template method. The rods were characterised using SEM and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, BET surface area and porous structure analysis, dilatometry and thermal gravimetry. SEM evaluation of the carbon monolithic structures revealed an interconnected rigid bimodal porous structure and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis verified the quantitative removal of the embedded silica beads. The specific surface areas of the 1, 2, 5 and 10,,m rods were 178, 154, 84 and 125,m2/g after pyrolysis and silica removal, respectively. Shrinkage of the monolithic rods during pyrolysis is proportional to the particle size of the silica used and ranged from 9 to 12%. Mercury porosimetry showed a narrow distribution of pore sizes, with an average of ,700,nm for the 1,,m carbon monolith. The suitability of bare and surface oxidised PCM rods for the use as a stationary phase for reversed and normal phase LC was explored. The additional modification of PCM rods with gold micro-particles followed by 6-mercaptohexanoic acid was performed and ion-exchange properties were evaluated. [source]


    Investigation of the separability of thaumatin by capillary electrophoresis

    Abstract The electrophoretic behaviour of the highly basic protein thaumatin was explored in strongly acid (pH 2) and mildly acid (pH 4.5) separation systems using both bare and coated fused silica capillaries. The separation selectivity for thaumatin I, thaumatin II, and for other sample constituents was insufficient for their baseline separation at pH 2 in an uncoated capillary because the separation efficiency was markedly lower than is common in the electrophoretic separations of proteins. A separation selectivity higher by up to one order of magnitude has been reached at pH 4.5. A pronounced asymmetry of zones, which impaired resolution at this pH, was effectively suppressed by coating of the capillary wall with a polymer. In fact, adsorption on the capillary coating always plays a contributory role whenever a good separation of thaumatin constituents is attained. This indicates that electrochromatographic separation systems based on capillaries coated with the layer of either cationic or hydrophilic uncharged polymer hold promise for the development of methods for thaumatin analysis.     The Determinants of Foreign Direct Investments: Sensitivity Analyses of Cross-Country Regressions

    A vast empirical literature has used ad hoc linear cross-country regressions to search for the determinants of FDI. The literature is extensive and controversial. Can policy-makers use this body of research to learn anything that can help them stimulate FDI? The author uses Extreme Bound Analysis (EBA) to examine if any of the conclusions from the existing studies is robust to small changes in the conditioning information set. The EBA upholds the robustness of the correlation between FDI and market-size, as measured by per-capita GDP, but indicates that the relation between FDI and many of the controversial variables (namely, tax, wage, openness, exchange rate, tariff, growth, and trade balance)bare highly sensitive to small alterations in the conditioning information set. The author also studies the distribution of the estimated coefficients of the controversial explanatory variables to rank them in order of their likelihood of their being correlated with FDI.     Mass and lifetime measurements of exotic nuclei in storage rings

    Abstract Mass and lifetime measurements lead to the discovery and understanding of basic properties of matter. The isotopic nature of the chemical elements, nuclear binding, and the location and strength of nuclear shells are the most outstanding examples leading to the development of the first nuclear models. More recent are the discoveries of new structures of nuclides far from the valley of stability. A new generation of direct mass measurements which allows the exploration of extended areas of the nuclear mass surface with high accuracy has been opened up with the combination of the Experimental Storage Ring ESR and the FRragment Separator FRS at GSI Darmstadt. In-flight separated nuclei are stored in the ring. Their masses are directly determined from the revolution frequency. Dependent on the half-life two complementary methods are applied. Schottky Mass Spectrometry SMS relies on the measurement of the revolution frequency of electron cooled stored ions. The cooling time determines the lower half-life limit to the order of seconds. For Isochronous Mass Spectrometry IMS the ring is operated in an isochronous ion-optical mode. The revolution frequency of the individual ions coasting in the ring is measured using a time-of-flight method. Nuclides with lifetimes down to microseconds become accessible. With SMS masses of several hundreds nuclides have been measured simultaneously with an accuracy in the 2,×,10,7 -range. This high accuracy and the ability to study large areas of the mass surface are ideal tools to discover new nuclear structure properties and to guide improvements for theoretical mass models. In addition, nuclear half-lives of stored bare and highly charged ions have been measured. This new experimental development is a significant progress since nuclear decay characteristics are mostly known for neutral atoms. For bare and highly charged ions new nuclear decay modes become possible, such as bound-state beta decay. Dramatic changes in the nuclear lifetime have been observed in highly charged ions compared to neutral atoms due to blocking of nuclear decay channels caused by the modified atomic interaction.     The dressed nonrelativistic electron in a magnetic field

    Abstract We consider a nonrelativistic electron interacting with a classical magnetic field pointing along the x3 -axis and with a quantized electromagnetic field. When the interaction between the electron and photons is turned off, the electronic system is assumed to have a ground state of finite multiplicity. Because of the translation invariance along the x3 -axis, we consider the reduced Hamiltonian associated with the total momentum along the x3 -axis and, after introducing an ultraviolet cutoff and an infrared regularization, we prove that the reduced Hamiltonian has a ground state if the coupling constant and the total momentum along the x3 -axis are sufficiently small. We determine the absolutely continuous spectrum of the reduced Hamiltonian and, when the ground state is simple, we prove that the renormalized mass of the dressed electron is greater than or equal to its bare one.     Writing in the Secondary Foreign Language Classroom: The Effects of Prompts and Tasks on Novice Learners of French

    This study investigated the effects of 3 different writing tasks (descriptive, narrative, and expository) and 3 different writing prompts (bare, vocabulary, and prose model) on 937 writing samples culled from 330 novice learners enrolled in 15 classes of Levels 1 and 2 high school French. In order to assess the quality, fluency, syntactic complexity, and accuracy of the writing samples, the researchers employed 4 evaluation methods: holistic scoring, length of product, mean length of T-units, and percentage of correct T-units. Results indicate that the descriptive task was the easiest and the expository task the most difficult. The prose model prompts produced the highest mean scores, and the bare prompts produced the lowest mean scores. Based on these findings, the researchers question whether the description of a novice writer in the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines(1986) should be used as a blueprint for curriculum development and textbook construction for secondary novice foreign language learners.     Nuri's testimony: HIV/AIDS in Indonesia and bare knowledge

    ABSTRACT As an epidemic that has emerged since the 1980s, still has no cure, and may bear no symptoms, HIV/AIDS is powerfully linked to questions of knowledge. In this article, I explore intersections of HIV/AIDS and knowledge by drawing from ethnographic and activist work with an HIV/AIDS nonprofit organization in Indonesia that focuses on gay men and warias (roughly, male transvestites). In particular, I look at testimony, a form of knowledge production differing from confession in that it emphasizes form over content. Examining testimony with regard to persons living with AIDS, I show how it produces a "bare" or "asymptomatic" knowledge that may cast light on broader dynamics of epistemology, selfhood, and belonging.     Loss of consumers alters the effects of resident assemblages on the local spread of an introduced macroalga

    Despite the great interest for the role played by resident assemblages in regulating biological invasions, few studies have assessed how these can influence the spread of exotic species that have successfully established or have included more than one trophic level. On shallow rocky reefs, we assessed how the effects of different benthic assemblages on the spread of an invasive alga, Caulerpa racemosa, are influenced by alterations in the density and species composition of the resident sea urchin assemblage. In order to simulate herbivore species loss scenarios, assemblages dominated by different morphological groups of algae (i.e. turfs or encrusting corallines) or experimentally cleared plots (i.e. bare rock) were exposed to grazing by different combinations of species (Arbacia lixula and Paracentrotus lividus) and densities (natural, ,50% and ,100% of natural densities) of urchins. Algal turfs and encrusting corallines generally facilitated C. racemosa. Manipulating urchins assemblages did not affect the cover and density of fronds of C. racemosa. In contrast, halving the density of P. lividus favoured the penetration of stolons of C. racemosa, consistently among algal assemblages. Other effects of urchins varied among algal assemblages, indicating interactions between trophic levels. In algal turfs, the total removal of urchins caused a decrease in the penetration of stolons, while it enhanced the length of fronds, indicating a shift in the growth form of this clonal plant and, ultimately, a depression of its spreading ability. In bare or encrusting corallines dominated surfaces, the removal of urchins had positive effects on the penetration of stolons and on the length of fronds of C. racemosa, irrespective of one or two species being manipulated and for the intensity of their removal. Our results show that tradeoffs between negative and positive effects of herbivores, varying according to relative densities of species and to the direction and strength of the effects of resident plant assemblages, can influence local rates of spread of C. racemosa. Thus, not only facilitation of exotics by natives can be key in enhancing the spread of exotic species, but it can occur between organisms at different trophic levels. Finally, our findings have important implications for the management of C. racemosa, in view of the progressive domination of shallow rocky reefs by algal turfs. [source]
