Selected AbstractsThe role of soil in the collapse of 18 piers of Hanshin Expressway in the Kobe earthquakeEARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING AND STRUCTURAL DYNAMICS, Issue 5 2006George Mylonakis Abstract An investigation is presented of the collapse of a 630 m segment (Fukae section) of the elevated Hanshin Expressway during the 1995 Kobe earthquake. The earthquake has, from a geotechnical viewpoint, been associated with extensive liquefactions, lateral soil spreading, and damage to waterfront structures. Evidence is presented that soil,structure interaction (SSI) in non-liquefied ground played a detrimental role in the seismic performance of this major structure. The bridge consisted of single circular concrete piers monolithically connected to a concrete deck, founded on groups of 17 piles in layers of loose to dense sands and moderate to stiff clays. There were 18 spans in total, all of which suffered a spectacular pier failure and transverse overturning. Several factors associated with poor structural design have already been identified. The scope of this work is to extend the previous studies by investigating the role of soil in the collapse. The following issues are examined: (1) seismological and geotechnical information pertaining to the site; (2) free-field soil response; (3) response of foundation-superstructure system; (4) evaluation of results against earlier studies that did not consider SSI. Results indicate that the role of soil in the collapse was multiple: First, it modified the bedrock motion so that the frequency content of the resulting surface motion became disadvantageous for the particular structure. Second, the compliance of soil and foundation altered the vibrational characteristics of the bridge and moved it to a region of stronger response. Third, the compliance of the foundation increased the participation of the fundamental mode of the structure, inducing stronger response. It is shown that the increase in inelastic seismic demand in the piers may have exceeded 100% in comparison with piers fixed at the base. These conclusions contradict a widespread view of an always-beneficial role of seismic SSI. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source] Do competitive intraguild interactions affect space and habitat use by small carnivores in a forested landscape?ECOGRAPHY, Issue 4 2006Caroline St-Pierre Complex interactions such as interference competition and predation, including intraguild predation, are now recognized as important components in animal community structure. At the lower end of a guild, weasels may be highly affected by other guild members due to small body size in relation to other predators. In 2000 and 2001, we radio-collared 24 ermines Mustela erminea and 25 long-tailed weasels M. frenata in 2 areas that differed in abundance of guild members. We tested the hypothesis that when faced with an increased density of other guild members, weasels would modify space and habitat use to reduce the risk of predation associated with encounters involving guild members. We predicted that weasels would increase use of specific habitats (such as refuges) to reduce encounter rates in the presence of a greater number of guild members. Because M. erminea is smaller than M. frenata and thus better able to take advantage of small rodent burrows as refuges from predators and as feeding grounds, we also predicted that M. frenata would show a stronger response to a higher abundance of guild members than M. erminea. Results were consistent with our predictions. Faced with an increased abundance of guild members, M. frenata showed increased habitat selectivity and reduced activity levels, which resulted in increased daily travel distances and increased home ranges. Mustela erminea responded to an increased abundance of guild members through reduced use of preferred habitat which M. frenata already occupied. The contrasting pattern of habitat selection observed between the 2 mustelid species suggested cascading effects, whereby large-predator pressure on M. frenata relaxed pressure of M. frenata on M. erminea. Our results draw attention to the likelihood that competitive intraguild interactions play a facilitating role in M. erminea,M. frenata coexistence. [source] Vocal Discrimination in Mate Guarding Male Australian Sea Lions: Familiarity Breeds ContemptETHOLOGY, Issue 8 2010Marie R. G. Attard The vocal characteristics of a species can be immensely diverse, and can significantly impact animal social interactions. The social structure of a species may vary with geographical variation in call characteristics. The ability of pinnipeds (true seals, fur seals, sea lions and walrus) to distinguish between conspecifics may assist male reproductive strategies, particularly mate acquisition. We assessed the ability of mate guarding Australian sea lion (Neophoca cinerea) males to discriminate local from foreign males' barks recorded from a geographically distant breeding colony. Bark characteristics were significantly different between colonies, with barks produced by males from the Lewis Island breeding colony higher pitched and longer in both duration and interval duration than barks produced by males on Kangaroo Island. Mate guarding males displayed inter-colony discrimination of barks, with a significantly stronger response to barks from local males than to those of males from a colony approx. 180 km away. Local males' barks were apparently considered a greater threat than barks from unfamiliar males. We propose that discrimination of acoustic characteristics may facilitate reproductive isolation in this species that may lead to an ethological,acoustic barrier between breeding colonies, and subsequent genetic isolation. [source] Chemotactic response of plant-growth-promoting bacteria towards roots of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal tomato plantsFEMS MICROBIOLOGY ECOLOGY, Issue 3 2003Sushma Gupta Sood Abstract The chemotactic responses of the plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria Azotobacter chroococcum and Pseudomonas fluorescens to roots of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (Glomus fasciculatum) tomato plants were determined. A significantly (P=0.05) greater number of bacterial cells of wild strains were attracted towards vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal tomato roots compared to non-vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal tomato roots. Substances exuded by roots served as chemoattractants for these bacteria. P. fluorescens was strongly attracted towards citric and malic acids, which were predominant constituents in root exudates of tomato plants. A. chroococcum showed a stronger response towards sugars than amino acids, but the response was weakest towards organic acids. The effects of temperature, pH, and soil water matric potential on bacterial chemotaxis towards roots were also investigated. In general, significantly (P=0.05) greater chemotactic responses of bacteria were observed at higher water matric potentials (0, ,1, and ,5 kPa), slightly acidic to neutral pH (6, 6.5 and 7), and at 20,30°C (depending on the bacterium) than in other environmental conditions. It is suggested that chemotaxis of P. fluorescens and A. chroococcum towards roots and their exudates is one of the several steps in the interaction process between bacteria and vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal roots. [source] Contrasting response of native and alien plant species richness to environmental energy and human impact along alpine elevation gradientsGLOBAL ECOLOGY, Issue 6 2009Lorenzo Marini ABSTRACT Aim, We tested whether the species,energy and species,human relationships vary between native and both naturalized and casual alien species richness when other environmental variables had been taken into account. Location, Trento Province, a region (c. 6200 km2) on the southern border of the European Alps (Italy), subdivided into 156 contiguous (c. 37.5 km2) cells and ranging in elevation from 66 to 3769 m. Methods, Data were separated into three subsets, representing richness of natives, naturalized aliens and casual aliens and separately related to temperature, human population and various environmental correlates of plant species diversity. We applied ordinary least squares and simultaneous autoregressive regressions to identify potential contrasting responses of the three plant status subsets and hierarchical partitioning to evaluate the relative importance of the predictor variables. Results, Variation in alien plant species richness along the region was almost entirely explained by temperature and human population density. The relationships were positive but strongly curvilinear. Native species richness was less strongly related to either factor but was positively related to the presence of calcareous bedrock. Native species richness had a decelerating positive relationship with temperature (R2= 55%), whereas naturalized and casual aliens had a positive accelerating relationship explaining 86% and 62% of the variation in richness, respectively. Native species richness had a positive decelerating relationship with population density (R2= 42%), whilst both alien subsets had a positive accelerating relationship. Main conclusions, Alien species richness was higher in areas with the most rich and diverse assemblages of native species. Areas at high altitudes are not especially prone to alien invasion due to energy constraints, low propagule pressure and disturbance, even considering a potential increased in temperature. Thus, if we consider future environmental change, we should expect a stronger response of aliens than natives in the currently warm, urbanized, low-altitude areas than in cold, high-altitude areas where human population density is low. [source] T-cell seeding: neonatal transfer of anti-myelin basic protein T-cell lines renders Fischer rats susceptible later in life to the active induction of experimental autoimmune encephalitisIMMUNOLOGY, Issue 1 2009Ilan Volovitz Summary Fischer strain rats resist active induction of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) following immunization with guinea-pig myelin basic protein (MBP) in complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA). Nevertheless, we now report that an encephalitogenic CD4+ anti-MBP T-cell line could be developed from actively immunized Fischer rats. Adoptive transfer of the activated line mediated acute EAE in adult Fischer rats, but not in 1-day-old rats. Moreover, we found that both resting and activated anti-MBP T cells injected 1 day post-natally rendered these rats susceptible later in life to the active induction of EAE by immunization with MBP/CFA. The actively induced EAE manifested the accelerated onset of a secondary, memory-type response. Resting anti-MBP T cells injected even up to 2 weeks post-natally produced no clinical signs but seeded 50,100% of the recipients for an active encephalitogenic immune response to MBP. An earlier T-cell injection (1,2 days) produced a higher incidence and stronger response. The transferred resting T cells entered the neonatal spleen and thymus and proliferated there but did not change the total anti-MBP precursor number in adults. Splenocytes harvested from rats that were injected neonatally but not exposed to MBP in vivo proliferated strongly and produced significant amounts of interferon-, to MBP in vitro. Similar results were observed in rats injected with resting T-cell lines reactive to ovalbumin, suggesting that the neonatal injection of resting T cells specific for a self or for a foreign antigen can seed the immune system with the potential for an enhanced effector response to that antigen later in life. [source] Earlywood vessel size of oak as a potential proxy for spring precipitation in mesic sitesJOURNAL OF BIOGEOGRAPHY, Issue 12 2008Patrick Fonti Abstract Aim, In this study, we evaluate the importance of the mean earlywood vessel size of oaks as a potential proxy for climate in mesic areas. Location, The study was conducted in Switzerland at three forest sites dominated by oak (Quercus petraea and Q. pubescens). The three sites were in different climatic zones, varying mainly in terms of precipitation regime. Methods, Three 50-year-long site chronologies of mean earlywood vessel size and tree-ring widths were obtained at each site and related to monthly meteorological records in order to identify the main variables controlling growth. The responses of mean vessel size to climate were compared with those of the width variables to evaluate the potential climatic information recorded by the earlywood vessels. Results, The results show that the mean vessel size has a different and stronger response to climate than ring-width variables, although its common signal and year-to-year variability are lower. This response is better in particular at mesic sites, where it is linked to precipitation during spring, i.e. at the time of vessel formation, and is probably related to the occurrence of only a few processes controlling vessel growth, whereas radial increment is controlled by multiple and varying factors. Main conclusions, The mean earlywood vessel size of oak appears to be a promising proxy for future climate reconstructions of mesic sites, where radial growth is not controlled by a single limiting factor. BRAMBILLA Abstract Many functions in behavioural processes of small passerines are regulated via vocal messages. Song plays an important role in the development of reproductive barriers and thus playback experiments can often be used for investigating the potential for reproductive isolation through behavioural mechanisms. Moltoni's warbler Sylvia (cantillans) moltonii is characterized by diagnostic vocalizations and a peculiar pattern of distribution, being parapatric and partly sympatric with the nominate Sylvia c. cantillans. With this work, we test whether these two closely related taxa react equally to their own song and to the song of the other taxon, shedding light on whether they perceive each other's songs as coming from the same species. We carried out 184 playback experiments within the mainland range of the two forms. We judged the response of the bird on a scale of scores. Each taxon responded more strongly to playback when faced with the song of its own taxon. This held true when applied only to males or females. Additionally, birds tested for both songs showed a stronger response to the song of their own taxon. The distributional context (sympatry vs. allopatry) did not affect bird response. Results indicate that a certain degree of reproductive isolation between the two taxa (because of diverged mate recognition systems) already exists; consistently with genetic data and with the peculiar pattern of distribution; this suggests that the two taxa have reached species status. J Periodont Res 2010; 45: 451,457. © 2010 John Wiley & Sons A/S Background and Objective:, To understand the role of the androgen receptor in gingival overgrowth, the effects of flutamide on interleukin-1,- and nifedipine-induced gene expression of connective tissue growth factor (CTGF/CCN2) and collagen production in gingival fibroblasts were examined. Material and Methods:, Gingival fibroblasts from healthy subjects and patients with dihydropyridine-induced gingival overgrowth (DIGO) were used. Confluent cells were treated with nifedipine, interleukin-1, or both. The mRNA expression was examined using real-time polymerase chain reaction, and the concentration of total soluble collagen in conditioned media was analysed by Sircol Collagen Assay. In addition, the protein expressions of androgen receptor, CTGF/CCN2 and type I collagen in gingival tissue were determined by western blot. Results:, Interleukin-1, was more potent than nifedipine in stimulating CTGF/CCN2 and procollagen ,1(I) mRNA expression, and there was an additive effect of the two drugs. Healthy cells exhibited an equal or stronger response of procollagen ,1(I) than those with DIGO, but DIGO cells displayed a stronger response in the secretion of soluble collagen in the same conditions. Flutamide, an androgen receptor antagonist, inhibited stimulation by nifedipine or interleukin-1,. Additionally, the protein expressions of androgen receptor and type I collagen were higher in DIGO gingival tissue than those in healthy gingival tissue. Conclusion:, The data suggest that both nifedipine and interleukin-1, play an important role in DIGO via androgen receptor upregulation and that gingival overgrowth is mainly due to collagen accumulation. Flutamide decreases the gene expression and protein production of collagen from dihydropyridine-induced overgrowth cells. Green MSc ABSTRACT Objective., Recent research suggests that higher scores on measures of empathy correlate with a stronger response to observed pain, as well as higher estimates of pain intensity. Little work to date has examined the impact of empathy on evaluations of different levels of expressed pain, or how empathy may alter the accuracy of interpreting these painful facial expressions. This study examines the role of empathy in rating the intensity of facial expressions of pain, and the accuracy of these ratings relative to self-reported pain. The potential mediating role of available pain cues or the moderating role of gender on this relationship are also examined. Methods., Undergraduate participants (observers, N = 130) were shown video clips of facial expressions of individuals from a cold presser pain task (senders), and then asked to estimate that pain experience. This estimate was compared with the video sender's actual pain ratings. Results., Higher empathy was associated with an overall increase in estimates of senders' pain, which was not mediated by video subject or participant gender or the duration of painful facial expressions. Further analyses revealed that high empathy was associated with greater accuracy in inferring pain on only one of three inferential accuracy indices. Conclusions., While observers with greater empathy may infer greater pain in senders, resulting in a smaller underestimation bias overall, they are not necessarily more accurate in estimating pain on any given stimuli. The importance of these potential differences in perceived pain for clinical assessment and interpersonal relationships are discussed. Hu Summary., Hemophilia A patients treated with coagulation factor (F)VIII may develop an anti-FVIII immune response. Anti-FVIII antibodies may occur also in healthy subjects. To understand the extent to which an immune response to FVIII occurs in healthy subjects, we investigated the proliferative response of blood CD4+ T cells from 90 blood donors to FVIII and to pools of overlapping synthetic peptides spanning the sequences of individual FVIII domains (A1,A3, C1,C2). Most subjects responded to FVIII and several FVIII domains. Men had stronger responses to FVIII than women, and older subjects than younger subjects. The domain-induced responses were weaker than the FVIII-induced responses, yet their intensity in individual subjects correlated with that of the response to FVIII. We examined whether Th1 and/or Th2 cells responded to FVIII in 68 subjects, by determining the CD4+ T cells that secreted interferon-, (IFN-,) or interleukin (IL)-5 after stimulation with FVIII: 25 subjects had FVIII-specific IFN-,-secreting cells, and seven of them had also FVIII-specific IL-5-secreting cells. None had only IL-5-secreting cells. Thus, a CD4+ T cell response to FVIII, which first involves Th1 cells, is common among subjects with a normal procoagulant function. [source] Unilateral suppression of pharyngeal motor cortex to repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation reveals functional asymmetry in the hemispheric projections to human swallowingTHE JOURNAL OF PHYSIOLOGY, Issue 2 2007Satish Mistry Inhibitory patterns of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) were applied to pharyngeal motor cortex in order to establish its role in modulating swallowing activity and provide evidence for functionally relevant hemispheric asymmetry. Healthy volunteers underwent single pulse TMS before and for 60 min after differing intensities of 1 Hz rTMS (n= 9, 6 male, 3 female, mean age 34 ± 3 years) or theta burst stimulation (TBS) (n= 9, 6 male, 3 female, mean age 37 ± 4 years). Electromyographic responses recorded from pharynx and hand were used as a measure of cortico-motor pathway excitability. Swallowing behaviour was then examined with a reaction time protocol, before and for up to 60 min after the most effective inhibitory protocol (1 Hz) applied to each hemisphere. Interventions were conducted on separate days and compared to sham using ANOVA. Only high intensity 1 Hz rTMS consistently suppressed pharyngeal motor cortex immediately and for up to 45 min (,34 ± 7%, P, 0.001). Adjacent hand and contralateral pharyngeal motor cortex showed no change in response (,15 ± 12%, P= 0.14 and 15 ± 12%, P= 0.45, respectively). When used to unilaterally disrupt each hemisphere, rTMS to pharyngeal motor cortex with the stronger responses altered normal (,12 ± 3%, P, 0.001) and fast (,9 ± 4%, P, 0.009) swallow times, not seen following rTMS to the contralateral cortex or after sham. Thus, suppression of pharyngeal motor cortex to rTMS is intensity and frequency dependent, which when applied to each hemisphere reveals functionally relevant asymmetry in the motor control of human swallowing.
