    St. Thomas University: Which Balanced Scorecard to Use?,/ST.

    ABSTRACT This case provides background on a university that undertook a formal strategic-planning initiative. Mary White, Vice-President (Administration), was responsible for developing the performance evaluation framework. She established a special task force, which included Peter Crimson, Assistant Vice-President (Administration), Eva Black, Director of Financial Analysis, and Adam Green, Director of Planning and Analysis, to assist her in this endeavor. The special task force had an insightful discussion on the balanced scorecard during its first meeting. When the meeting concluded, Mary White asked Adam Green to conduct research on the different approaches to the balanced scorecard adopted in a number of universities. She expected Adam Green to provide an analysis of the different balanced scorecard approaches in universities, to make recommendations on the balanced scorecard approach that St. Thomas should adopt, and to develop a balanced scorecard for the university. An objective of the case is to provide students with an opportunity to evaluate the implementation of the balanced scorecard in universities, to recommend an approach for developing the performance evaluation framework, and to design a balanced scorecard for the university. Mary White, vice-présidente à l'administration, assumait la responsabilité de l'élaboration du cadre d'évaluation de la performance. Elle a constitué un groupe de travail spécial, réunissant Peter Crimson, adjoint à la vice-présidente à l'administration, Eva Black, directrice de l'analyse financière, et Adam Green, directeur de la planification et de l'analyse, pour lui prêter main-forte dans cette entreprise. Lors de sa première réunion, le groupe de travail spécial a tenu une discussion instructive sur le tableau de bord.     Der Melanbogen über die Sieg bei Menden/St. Augustin wurde 1929 errichtet und ist einer der letzten erhaltenen Bögen seiner Art in Deutschland. Die stetige Zunahme der Verkehrsbelastungen und das hohe Alter der Brücke erforderten im Jahr 2006 eine umfangreiche Bestandsaufnahme und eine rechnerische Untersuchung der Brücke. Durch eine sofortige Verstärkung der überbeanspruchten Hänger konnte die Nutzung der Brücke durch den öffentlichen Nahverkehr und einen begrenzten Schwerverkehr sichergestellt werden.     Thermal stability of porous it -PMMA thin film obtained by the extraction of st -PMAA from it -PMMA/st -PMAA stereocomplex with layer-by-layer assembly on a substrate

    Abstract The functionality of porous isotactic (it) poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) thin films, which were previously developed by the selective extraction of syndiotactic (st) poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) from the it -PMMA/st -PMAA stereocomplex thin film on a substrate using the layer-by-layer assembly method was investigated after thermal treatment (70, 80, and 90 °C) in water for 4 h. Quartz crystal microbalance analysis and infrared spectra measurements revealed that the st -PMAA incorporation ability of the porous it -PMMA thin film decreased in order at 80 and 90 °C, while there was no decrease observed at 70 °C. X-ray diffraction analysis also supported the thermal stability of the porosity at 70 °C, whereas two it -PMMA crystalline peaks (2, = 9° and 14°) were generated during heating at 90 °C. The loss of the functionality of the it -PMMA thin film was thus shown to be due to crystallization, which was caused by the increase in polymer-chain mobility during the heating process. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.     Performance of a Rate Responsive Accelerometer-Based Pacemaker with Autocalibration During Standardized Exercise and Recovery

The rate responsiveness of a single chamber, accelerometer-based pacemaker with an autocalibration function (Opus G VVIR pacemaker, ELA Medical) was studied with a daily life protocol developed to automatically optimize the programming of accelerometer-based sensors. This new sensor was compared with two other body activity sensors that were manually optimized patient by patient. Forty-three pacemaker recipients (mean age 71 ± 11 years), paced > 95% of the time, underwent a daily life protocol consisting of rapid walking for 6 minutes (W), climbing upstairs for 1.5 minutes (U), and downstairs for 1.5 minutes (D), alternated by recovery phases. The results were compared with performances measured in a control population of healthy subjects and in two paced patient populations (one equipped with a Dash Intermedics VVIR pacemaker and the other equipped with a Sensolog III Pacesetter/St. Jude VVIR pacemaker). Sex distribution and mean age between paced patients and control subjects were statistically comparable. The mean heart rate achieved by all paced patients at each time sample was compared with the normograms, assigning acceleration (slope) and rate (rate) scores for exercise and recovery phases. Scores ranged from -10 (hypochronotropic) to +10 (hyperchronotropic). Zero represents exact concordance with the responses of healthy individuals, and values between -2.5 and +2.5 were considered statistically similar to normal. During W, although the overall performances of the Dash, Sensolog, and Opus G did not statistically differ from healthy controls, the scores obtained by the Opus G were significantly closer to controls than those of the two other pacemakers (P = 0.02). For U, the three sensors were hypochronotropic (P = 0.03), though the Opus G was associated with a heart rate response closer to that of healthy controls (P = 0.04). D provided similar mean heart rate scores for the Opus G and the Dash compared with healthy controls, in contrast with the hyperchronotropic behavior of the Sensolog (P = 0.02). Opus G revealed a physiological modulation of the heart rate for W and D tests with a slightly hypochronotropic behavior during U. The Opus G autocalibration function provided daily life performances closer to those of healthy controls than two other pacemakers equipped with a body activity sensor that were manually optimized.     Effect of Point-of-care Influenza Testing on Management of Febrile Children

    Abstract Objectives To determine the effect of point-of-care testing (POCT) for influenza on the physician management of febrile children who are at risk for serious bacterial illness (SBI) on the basis of age and temperature and who are presenting to a pediatric emergency department (ED) during an influenza outbreak. Methods Patients 2,3 months of age with temperature of ,38°C and patients 3,24 months of age with temperature of ,39°C who were presenting to a pediatric ED during an influenza outbreak were enrolled into a prospective, quasi-randomized, controlled trial. Influenza testing was performed on enrolled patients by either the POCT or the standard-testing (ST) methods. The two groups were compared in terms of laboratory testing, chest radiography, antibiotic use, visit-associated costs, pediatric ED lengths of stay, inpatient admission, and return visits to the pediatric ED. Similar analyses also were performed on the resulting subgroups of patients on the basis of method of testing (POCT or ST) and test result (positive or negative). Results Of 767 eligible patients, 700 (91%) completed the study. No significant differences were demonstrated between the POCT and ST groups with respect to laboratory tests ordered, chest radiographs obtained, antibiotic administration, inpatient admission, return visits to the pediatric ED, lengths of stay, or visit-associated costs. In the subgroup analysis, the adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for blood culture in influenza test,positive to ,negative patients were 0.59 and 0.71 in the POCT and ST groups, respectively (p = 0.088). The adjusted ORs for urine culture in influenza test,positive to ,negative patients were 0.46 and 0.67 in the POCT and ST groups, respectively (p = 0.005). Conclusions When using a strategy of performing influenza testing on all patients at risk for SBI who presented to a pediatric ED during an influenza outbreak, the method of testing (POCT or ST) did not appear to significantly alter physician management, cost, or length of stay in the pediatric ED. However, if the interaction of the method of testing and the test result (positive or negative) were considered, a positive POCT for influenza was associated with a significant reduction in orders for urinalyses and urine cultures.     Development and validation of a smoothing-splines-based correction method for improving the analysis of CEST-MR images

    Abstract Chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) imaging is an emerging MRI technique relying on the use of endogenous or exogenous molecules containing exchangeable proton pools. The heterogeneity of the water resonance frequency offset plays a key role in the occurrence of artifacts in CEST-MR images. To limit this drawback, a new smoothing-splines-based method for fitting and correcting Z -spectra in order to compensate for low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) without any a priori model was developed. Global and local voxel-by-voxel Z -spectra were interpolated by smoothing splines with smoothing terms aimed at suppressing noise. Thus, a map of the water frequency offset (,zero' map) was used to correctly calculate the saturation transfer (ST) for each voxel. Simulations were performed to compare the method to polynomials and zero-only-corrected splines on the basis of SNR improvement. In vitro acquisitions of capillaries containing solutions of LIPOCEST agents at different concentrations were performed to experimentally validate the results from simulations. Additionally, ex vivo investigations of bovine muscle mass injected with LIPOCEST agents were performed as a function of increasing pulse power. The results from simulations and experiments highlighted the importance of a proper ,zero' correction (15% decrease of fictitious CEST signal in phantoms and ex vivo preparations) and proved the method to be more accurate compared with the previously published ones, often providing a SNR higher than 5 in different simulated and experimentally noisy conditions.     Effects of transient muscle contractions and stretching on the tendon structures in vivo

    ABSTRACT This study compared the effects of static stretching (ST) and repeated muscle contractions (CON) on the viscoelastic properties of tendon structures in vivo. Eight male subjects performed ST (passively flexed to 35 of dorsiflexion) for 5 min and 50 repetitions of isometric maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) for 3 s each with 3 s relaxation. Before and after each task, the elongation of the tendon and aponeurosis of the medial gastrocnemius muscle (MG) was directly measured by ultrasonography, while the subjects performed ramp isometric plantar flexion up to MVC, followed by a ramp relaxation. The relationship between the estimated muscle force (Fm) and tendon elongation (L) during the ascending phase was applied to a linear regression, the slope of which was defined as stiffness of the tendon structures. The percentage of the area within the Fm,L loop to the area beneath the curve during the ascending phase was calculated as an index representing hysteresis. The ST protocol significantly decreased the stiffness (,8%) and hysteresis (29%)., respectively. In contrast, the CON protocol significantly decreased the stiffness, but not the hysteresis. These results suggested that the stretching and repeated contractions would make the tendon structures more complaint, and further decreased the hysteresis of the tendon structures. [source]


    Effect of storage media on human periodontal ligament cell apoptosis

    However, the mechanisms by which different storage conditions alter the functional status of PDL cells have not been determined. The purpose of the present study was to investigate, in vitro, the level of programed cell death or apoptosis in a population of PDL cells following storage under different conditions. Primary human PDL cells were plated into 24-well-culture plates and allowed to attach for 24 h. Cells were then exposed for 1 h to milk, Hank's balanced salt solution (HBSS), Soft Wear contact lens solution or Gatorade at room temperature or on ice. Culture medium was used as a negative control. Apoptosis was evaluated at 24, 48, and 72 h after treatment on quadruplicate samples by using the ST 160 ApopTag Fluorescein Direct In Situ Detection Kit. The total number of cells and the total number of apoptotic cells were counted. The results indicated that at 24 and 72 h, PDL treated with Gatorade and the contact lens solution displayed the highest percentages of apoptotic cells when compared with the other treatment groups at room temperature. Overall, cells treated on ice showed significantly lower levels of apoptosis when compared with treatments at room temperature. In conclusion, the results indicated that apoptosis plays a major role in cell death in cells treated with Gatorade and contact lens solutions in comparison to other storage solutions and that storage on ice can inhibit programed cell death.     The Effectiveness of Jobs Reservation: Caste, Religion and Economic Status in India

    ABSTRACT This article investigates the effect of jobs reservation on improving the economic opportunities of persons belonging to India's Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST). Using employment data from the 55th NSS round, the authors estimate the probabilities of different social groups in India being in one of three categories of economic status: own account workers; regular salaried or wage workers; casual wage labourers. These probabilities are then used to decompose the difference between a group X and forward caste Hindus in the proportions of their members in regular salaried or wage employment. This decomposition allows us to distinguish between two forms of difference between group X and forward caste Hindus: ,attribute' differences and ,coefficient' differences. The authors measure the effects of positive discrimination in raising the proportions of ST/SC persons in regular salaried employment, and the discriminatory bias against Muslims who do not benefit from such policies. They conclude that the boost provided by jobs reservation policies was around 5 percentage points. They also conclude that an alternative and more effective way of raising the proportion of men from the SC/ST groups in regular salaried or wage employment would be to improve their employment-related attributes.     Neuronal differentiation and long-term survival of newly generated cells in the olfactory midbrain of the adult spiny lobster, Panulirus argus

    Abstract The fate of continuously generated cells in the soma clusters of the olfactory midbrain of adult spiny lobsters, Panulirus argus, was investigated by in vivo pulse-chase experiments with the proliferation marker 5-bromo-2,-deoxyuridine (BrdU) combined with immunostainings for neuropeptides of mature neurons. A BrdU injection after a survival time (ST) of 14 h labeled about 100 nuclei in the lateral soma clusters (LC), comprised of projection neurons, and about 30 nuclei in the medial soma clusters (MC), comprised of local interneurons. The BrdU-positive nuclei were confined to small regions at the inside of these clusters, which also contain nuclei in different phases of mitosis and thus represent proliferative zones. After STs of 2 weeks or 3 months, the number of BrdU-positive nuclei was doubled, indicating a mitosis of all originally labeled cells. Dependent on ST, the BrdU-positive nuclei were translocated from the proliferative zones towards the outside of the clusters, where somata of mature neurons reside. Immunostainings with antibodies to the neuropeptides FMRFamide and substance P, both of which label a large portion of somata in the MC and a pair of giant neurons projecting into the LC, revealed that in both clusters the proliferative zones are surrounded by, but are themselves devoid of, labeling. In the MC, some BrdU-positive somata were double-labeled by the FMRFamide antibody after an ST of 3 months, and by the substance P antibody after STs of 6 and 11/14 months, but not after 3 months. In the LC, BrdU-positive somata after an ST of 3 months partially and after 6 and 11/14 months widely overlapped with the arborizations of the giant neurons, indicating the establishment of synaptic input. The experiments show that cells generated in proliferative zones in the LC and MC of adult spiny lobsters after a final mitosis differentiate into neurons within months, survive for at least 1 year, and are integrated into the circuitry of the olfactory midbrain. A new hypothesis about the mechanism of adult neurogenesis in the central olfactory pathway of decapod crustaceans is developed, linking it to neurogenesis during embryonic and larval development. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     University faculty perceptions of the health risks related to cigarettes and smokeless tobacco

    Abstract Introduction and Aims. It is now widely understood by tobacco research and policy experts that smokeless tobacco (ST) use confers significantly less risk than smoking, but no studies have assessed tobacco risk perceptions in highly educated populations. The purpose of this study was to explore the perception of risks related to smoking and ST use among full-time faculty on two campuses at the University of Louisville. Design and Methods. In October 2007, a survey that quantified risk perceptions of cigarette smoking and ST use with respect to four health domains (general health, heart attack/stroke, all cancer, oral cancer) was sent to 1610 full-time faculty at the Belknap and the Health Sciences Center (HSC) campuses of the University of Louisville, and 597 (37%) returned a completed survey. Results. Overall, cigarettes were considered as high risk for all health domains by large majorities (75,97%). Except for heart attack/stroke, ST was also considered as high risk by the majority of faculty (69,87%), and at least half perceived cigarettes and ST to be equally harmful across all domains. HSC faculty had somewhat more accurate risk perceptions than Belknap faculty for ST, but both groups overestimated the risks, especially for oral cancer. Discussion and Conclusions. This study found that the risks of ST use are overestimated and conflated to that of cigarettes among highly educated professionals, demonstrating the need for better education about the risks of tobacco use and for communication of accurate information by health organisations and agencies.[Peiper N, Stone R, Van Zyl R & Rodu B.     Assessment of Elastic Properties of the Descending Thoracic Aorta By Transesophageal Echocardiography with Acoustic Quantification in Patients with a Stroke

    Previous studies have described the use of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) with acoustic quantification (AQ) in assessing aortic elastic properties. We hypothesized that patients with a prior history of stroke (ST) may have a higher risk of atherosclerotic change in great vessels compared to nonstroke subjects (NST) and thus have decreased elastic properties. We assessed the elastic properties of the descending thoracic aorta (DTA) by TEE in ST patients and compared them with data in NST patients. Subjects included 31 with ST without any evidence of emboli originating from the heart (age 51 ± 10 years, M: F = 20: 11) and 25 age-matched NST (M: F= 8: 17). Patients with significant valvular heart disease including aortic and mitral regurgitation, left ventricular dysfunction (ejection fraction < 55%), and congenital heart disease were excluded. Compliance (C), distensibility (D), and stiffness index (SI) were measured using AQ and M-mode measurement at a level of the left atrium. We scored atherosclerotic risk factors (ARF) such as a history of diabetes, hypertension, smoking, hypercholesterolemia, and the presence of atheroma of DTA. There was no evidence of atheroma of DTA in NST. There were no significant differences in heart rate and systolic and diastolic blood pressure between ST and NST patients. Fractional area change (FAC) of DTA was significantly lower in ST than in NST patients (3.2 ± 1.6 vs 5.4 ± 2.5%, P= 0.000). ST patients had significantly lower C (1.2 ± 0.4 vs 1.5 ± 0.7 times 10 -3 cm2 mmHg -1, P= 0.039), lower D (0.8 ± 0.3 vs 1.5 ± 0.8 times 10 -3 mmHg -1, P= 0.000), and higher SI (10.3 ± 8.8 vs 5.3 ± 2.9, P= 0.006) than NST patients. ST patients without atheroma of DTA (n± 21) also had significantly lower C (1.1 ± 0.4 vs 1.5 ±0.7 times 10 -3 cm -2 mmHg -1, P= 0.038) and lower D (3.5 ± 1.4 vs 4.8 ± 2.4 times 10 -3 mmHg -1, P= 0.021) than NST patients. There was a significant positive correlation between SI and the score of ARF (r= 0.51, P= 0.000). The regional elastic properties of DTA measured by TEE with AQ and M-mode method were abnormal in ST. Therefore, TEE with AQ technique may have a possible clinical application for the detection of early atherosclerotic changes such as alteration of elastic properties in morphological normal DTA.     Extended treatment of older cigarette smokers

    ABSTRACT Aims Tobacco dependence treatments achieve abstinence rates of 25,30% at 1 year. Low rates may reflect failure to conceptualize tobacco dependence as a chronic disorder. The aims of the present study were to determine the efficacy of extended cognitive behavioral and pharmacological interventions in smokers , 50 years of age, and to determine if gender differences in efficacy existed. Design Open randomized clinical trial. Setting A free-standing, smoking treatment research clinic. Participants A total of 402 smokers of , 10 cigarettes per day, all 50 years of age or older. Intervention Participants completed a 12-week treatment that included group counseling, nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and bupropion. Participants, independent of smoking status, were then assigned randomly to follow-up conditions: (i) standard treatment (ST; no further treatment); (ii) extended NRT (E-NRT; 40 weeks of nicotine gum availability); (iii) extended cognitive behavioral therapy (E-CBT; 11 cognitive behavioral sessions over a 40-week period); or (iv) E-CBT plus E-NRT (E-combined; 11 cognitive behavioral sessions plus 40 weeks nicotine gum availability). Measurements Primary outcome variable was 7-day point prevalence cigarette abstinence verified biochemically at weeks 24, 52, 64 and 104. Findings The most clinically important findings were significant main effects for treatment condition, time and the treatment × time interaction. The E-CBT condition produced high cigarette abstinence rates that were maintained throughout the 2-year study period [(week 24 (58%), 52 (55%), 64 (55%) and 104 (55%)], and was significantly more effective than E-NRT and ST across that period. No other treatment condition was significantly different to ST. No effects for gender were found. Conclusions Extended cognitive behavioral treatments can produce high and stable cigarette abstinence rates for both men and women. NRT does not add to the efficacy of extended CBT, and may hamper its efficacy. Research is needed to determine if these results can be replicated in a sample with a greater range of ages, and improved upon with the addition of medications other than NRT. [source]


    Assessing the impact of pollution on the Japaratuba river in Brazil using the Drosophila wing spot test

    Abstract The Drosophila melanogaster somatic mutation and recombination test (SMART) was used to assess the genotoxicity of surface (S) and bottom (B) water and sediment samples collected from Sites 1 and 2 on the Japaratuba River (Sergipe, Brazil), an area impacted by a petrochemical industrial complex that indirectly discharges treated effluent (produced water) into the river. The genotoxicity tests were performed in standard (ST) cross and high bioactivation (HB) cross flies and were conducted on samples taken in March (dry season) and in July (rainy season) of 2003. Mutant spot frequencies found in treatments with unprocessed water and sediment samples from the test sites were compared with the frequencies observed for similar samples taken from a clean reference site (the Jacarecica River in Sergipe, Brazil) and those of negative (ultrapure water) controls. While samples from the Japaratuba River generally produced greater responses than those from the Jacarecica River, positive responses were detected for both the test and reference site samples. All the water samples collected in March 2003 were genotoxic. In July 2003, the positive responses were restricted to water samples collected from Sites 1 B and 2 S in the ST cross. The genotoxicity of the water samples was due to mitotic recombination, and the samples produced similar genotoxic responses in ST and HB flies. The spot frequencies found in the July water samples were considerably lower than those for the March water samples, suggesting a seasonal effect. The only sediment samples that were genotoxic were from Site 1 (March and July) and from the Jacarecica River (March). The genotoxins in these samples produced both somatic mutation (limited to the Site 1 sample in HB flies) and recombination. The results of this study indicate that samples from both the Japaratuba and Jacarecica Rivers were genotoxic, with the most consistently positive responses detected with Site 1 samples, the site closest to the putative pollution source.     Investigating Burkholderia cepacia complex populations recovered from Italian maize rhizosphere by multilocus sequence typing

    Summary The Burkholderia cepacia complex (BCC) comprises at least nine closely related species of abundant environmental microorganisms. Some of these species are highly spread in the rhizosphere of several crop plants, particularly of maize; additionally, as opportunistic pathogens, strains of the BCC are capable of colonizing humans. We have developed and validated a multilocus sequence typing (MLST) scheme for the BCC. Although widely applied to understand the epidemiology of bacterial pathogens, MLST has seen limited application to the population analysis of species residing in the natural environment; we describe its novel application to BCC populations within maize rhizospheres. 115 BCC isolates were recovered from the roots of different maize cultivars from three different Italian regions over a 9-year period (1994,2002). A total of 44 sequence types (STs) were found of which 41 were novel when compared with existing MLST data which encompassed a global database of 1000 clinical and environmental strains representing nearly 400 STs. In this study of rhizosphere isolates approximately 2.5 isolates per ST was found, comparable to that found for the whole BCC population. Multilocus sequence typing also resolved inaccuracies associated with previous identification of the maize isolates based on recA gene restriction fragment length polymorphims and species-specific polymerase chain reaction. The 115 maize isolates comprised the following BCC species groups, B. ambifaria (39%), BCC6 (29%), BCC5 (10%), B. pyrrocinia (8%), B. cenocepacia IIIB (7%) and B. cepacia (6%), with BCC5 and BCC6 potentially constituting novel species groups within the complex. Closely related clonal complexes of strains were identified within B. cepacia, B. cenocepacia IIIB, BCC5 and BCC6, with one of the BCC5 clonal complexes being distributed across all three sampling sites. Overall, our analysis demonstrates that the maize rhizosphere harbours a massive diversity of novel BCC STs, so that their addition to our global MLST database increased the ST diversity by 10%.     Long-term clopidogrel administration following severe coronary injury reduces proliferation and inflammation via inhibition of nuclear factor-kappaB and activator protein 1 activation in pigs

    ABSTRACT Background, The optimal duration of clopidogrel treatment following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and the patient population that would benefit most are still unknown. In a porcine coronary injury model, we tested two different durations of clopidogrel treatment on severely or moderately injured arteries and examined the arterial response to injury. To understand the molecular mechanism, we also investigated the effects on transcription factors nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-,B) and activator protein 1 (AP-1). Materials and methods, In 24 cross-bred pigs, one coronary artery was only moderately injured by percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) and one coronary artery was severely injured by PTCA and subsequent beta-irradiation (Brachy group). Animals received 325 mg aspirin daily for 3 months and 75 mg clopidogrel daily for either 28 days [short-term (ST) clopidogrel group] or 3 months [long-term (LT) clopidogrel group]. Results, After 3 months, the number of proliferating cells per cross-section differed significantly between ST and LT in both injury groups (PTCAST 90·2 ± 10·3 vs. PTCALT 19·2 ± 4·7, P < 0·05; BrachyST 35·8 ± 8·4 vs. BrachyLT 7·5 ± 2·0, P < 0·05). Similar results were seen for inflammatory cells (CD3+ cells): PTCAST 23·5 ± 3·55 vs. PTCALT 4·67 ± 0·92, P < 0·05; BrachyST 83·17 ± 11·17 vs. BrachyLT 20 ± 4·82, P < 0·05). Long-term administration also reduced the activity of NF-,B and AP-1 by 62,64% and 42,58%, respectively. However, the effects of different durations of clopidogrel administration on artery dimensions were not statistically significant. Conclusions, Regarding inflammation and transcription factor activity at the PCI site, long-term clopidogrel administration is superior to short-term administration, especially in severely injured arteries. Transferring our results to the human situation, patients with more severely diseased arteries may benefit from a prolonged clopidogrel medication after PCI. [source]


    Tetranuclear Manganese Complexes with [MnII4] and [MnII2MnIII2] Units: Syntheses, Structures, Magnetic Properties, and DFT Study,

    Abstract Two tetranuclear manganese compounds, [Mn4(,3,,2 -L)4Br4(LH)4] (1) and [Mn4(,3,,2 -L)2(,,,2 -L)4L2Br2] (2), with cubane and defect dicubane-like cores were synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic measurements, and DFT calculations (LH = 2-methoxyethanol). The magnetic properties of the resulting [Mn4] building blocks are presented and discussed in detail. In particular, in 2 the MnIII,O,MnIII angle 103.12(8)° is the largest observed to date for such a system. The conjunction of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions within the tetranuclear mixed-valent MnII2MnIII2 complexes results in an unusual ST = 1 ground state. [source]


    Areca nut use following migration and its consequences

    The combined use of areca nut and smokeless tobacco (ST) is practiced particularly in the Indo-Chinese continents. While there is considerable global variation in the use of these products, migrant studies relevant to areca nut use is of considerable interest to epidemiologists in suggesting the extent to which these environment exposures are important in the aetiology of different cancers and other health-related consequences. Studies on Indian migrants to the Malay peninsula, South and east Africa and various Asian ethnic groups resident in several parts of the United Kingdom have shown that the consumption of areca nut (often mixed with ST) is highly prevalent in these communities. Available data on the prevalence of areca chewing among these migrant populations are reviewed here. The carriage of these risk factors from South Asia to other countries has resulted in excess risk of oral cancer in these new settlements. There is also a high incidence of cardiovascular disease, hypertension and late onset diabetes among Indians living in the United Kingdom and there is new evidence to suggest that the combined roles of areca and ST may be contributory. Because of their enhanced financial situation, substance abuse may increase in their new country of domicile. The two products are psychologically addictive and a dependency syndrome related to their use among Asian immigrants to the United Kingdom has been described recently. [source]


    Exploiting the short,term and long,term channel properties in space and time: Eigenbeamforming concepts for the BS in WCDMA

    The deployment of adaptive antennas at base stations considerably increases the spectral efficiency of wireless communication systems. To reduce the computational complexity and increase performance of space,time (ST) processing, processing may take place in reduced dimension, i. e., pre,filtering takes place which is related to linear estimation theory based on second order statistics. To this end, long,term and short,term channel estimates are integrated into specific Tx/Rx systems. In this article, we present a new ST rake structure for uplink reception in WCDMA which operates in reduced dimension. Accordingly, our approach combines short,term and long,term spatial and temporal channel properties using an eigenanalysis. By choosing dominant eigenbeams in time and space, the algorithm enhances interference suppression as well as spatial and temporal receive diversity. In contrast to previously introduced well,known receiver structures, the ST eigenrake inherently adapts to different propagation environments and achieves higher spectral efficiency than other receivers. This is illustrated by Monte,Carlo simulations. Then we extend the proposed concept to the downlink. The downlink eigenbeamformer improves closed,loop downlink diversity compared to other proposals in standardization (3GPP) which only exploit short,term channel properties. Even though the short,term feedback rate remains unchanged, additional antenna elements can be included to increase antenna and diversity gain. We also present a tracking solution to the downlink eigenbeamforming in WCDMA. To this end, we propose a distributed implementation of the eigenspace/,beam tracking at the mobile terminal and base station (BS), respectively. Moreover, the specific nature of the deployed tracking scheme offers an advantageous feedback signalling. [source]


    SEASONAL CYCLES OF ALLOZYME-BY-CHROMOSOMAL-INVERSION GAMETIC DISEQUILIBRIUM IN DROSOPHILA SUBOBSCURA

    Abstract Allozyme loci are frequently found non randomly associated to the chromosomal inversions in which they are included in Drosophila. Two opposite views compete to explain strong allozyme-by-inversion gametic disequilibria: they result from natural selection or, conversely, merely represent remnants of associations accidentally established at the origin of inversions. Empirical efforts aimed at deciding between adaptive and historical scenarios have focused on the spatial distribution of disequilibria. Yet, the evolutionary significance of these associations remains uncertain. I report here the results of a time-series analysis of the seasonal variation of alleles at six allozyme loci (Acph, Lap, Pept-1, Ao, Mpi, and Xdh) in connection with the O chromosomal polymorphisms of D. subobscura. The findings were: (1) in the segment I of the O chromosome, Lap and Pept-1 allozymes changed seasonally in a cyclical fashion within the ST gene arrangement, but they changed erratically within the 3+4 gene configuration; (2) the frequencies of Lap111 and Pept-10,40 within ST dropped to their lowest values in early and late summer, respectively, when the seasonal level of the ST arrangement is lowest. Furthermore, Lap1,11 and Pept-10,40 covary with ST only within these seasons, yet in a fashion inconsistent with these alleles having a major influence on the dynamics of the inversion; (3) seasonal cycling of alleles within inversions were not detected at Acph, Ao, Mpi, and Xdh, yet these loci are nearly monomorphic at the study population, and/or their sampled series were shorter than those for Lap and Pept-1; and (4) simply monitoring allozyme frequencies separately for each inversion proved to be superior, for evidencing the seasonal cycles of the disequilibria, to the use of the D' coefficient of association. Observed seasonal cycles of allozymes within inversions likely reflect natural selection. [source]


    Vitamin D receptor FokI genotype influences bone mineral density response to strength training, but not aerobic training

    To determine the influence of the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene FokI and BsmI genotype on bone mineral density response to two exercise training modalities, 206 healthy men and women (50,81 years old) were studied before and after ,5,6 months of either aerobic exercise training (AT) or strength training (ST). A totla of 123 subjects completed AT (51 men, 72 women) and 83 subjects completed ST (40 men, 43 women). DNA was extracted from blood samples of all subjects and genotyping was performed at the VDR FokI and BsmI locus to determine its association to training response. Total body, greater trochanter and femoral neck bone mineral density (BMD) were measured before and after both training programmes using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. VDR BsmI genotype was not significantly related to BMD at baseline or after ST or AT. However, VDR FokI genotype was significantly related to ST- but not AT-induced changes in femoral neck BMD (P < 0.05). The heterozygotes (Ff) in the ST group approached a significantly greater increase in femoral neck BMD (P= 0.058) compared to f homozygotes. There were no significant genotype relationships in the AT group. These data indicate that VDR FokI genotype may influence femoral neck BMD response to ST, but not AT. [source]


    Mice protected by oral immunization with Lactobacillus reuteri secreting fusion protein of Escherichia coli enterotoxin subunit protein

    Abstract A green fluorescent protein (gfp) gene was ligated to the Lactobacillus reuteri -specific nisin-inducible expression-secretion vector pNIES, generating a pNIES-GFP vector capable of secreting the cloned gene as a GFP-fusion protein with fluorescent activity. To develop this system as a live vehicle carrying the heat-stable enterotoxin (ST) and heat-labile enterotoxin B (LTB) of the enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC), a recombinant 5,- ST - LTB -3, DNA fragment was cloned into pNIES-GFP. The resulting L. reuteri/pNIES-GFP:STLTB system was found to possess the capability of adhering to the mice gut, secreting GFP:STLTB product at 0.14 and 0.026 pgcell,1 under induced and noninduced conditions, respectively. Further analysis of the GFP:STLTB product confirmed its ganglioside-binding ability, LTB antigenicity and relative freedom from the ST-associated toxicity, making it suitable for use as an oral vaccine in mice. Oral inoculation of the L. reuteri/pNIES-GFP:STLTB culture in mice elicited significant (P<0.01) serum IgG and mucosal IgA antibodies against the STLTB antigen. These immunized mice were subsequently challenged with ETEC and showed full protection against the fluid influx response in the gut. This is the first report of using L. reuteri as a vaccine carrier to induce complete immunologic protection against ETEC. [source]


    Histologic and biochemical changes during the evolution of chronic rejection of liver allografts

    Criteria for histologic diagnosis of chronic rejection (CR) are based on changes seen late in the disease process that are likely to be irreversible and unresponsive to treatment. Changes occurring during the evolution of CR are less clearly defined. The serial biopsy specimens, failed allografts, and biochemical profiles of 28 patients who underwent retransplantation for CR were examined with the aim of identifying histologic and biochemical features that were present during the early stages of CR. For each case, a point of acute deterioration in liver function tests (LFTs) was identified ("start time" [ST]) that subsequently progressed to graft failure. Biopsy specimens before, at the time of ("start biopsy" [SB]), and after the ST were assessed histologically, and findings were correlated with the biochemical changes. CR resulted from acute rejection (AR) that did not resolve. Centrilobular necroinflammation (CLNI) associated with an elevated aspartate transaminase (AST) level and portal tract features of AR were present at the start. Portal AR features resolved, CLNI persisted, AST level remained elevated, and bilirubin and alkaline phosphatase levels progressively increased throughout the evolution of CR. Portal tracts also showed a loss of small arterial and bile duct branches, with arterial loss occurring early and bile duct loss as a later progressive lesion. Foam cell arteriopathy was rarely seen in needle biopsy specimens. In conclusion, findings from this study may help identify patients at risk of progressing to graft loss from CR at a stage when the disease process is potentially reversible and amenable to treatment.     Estimation of rainfall from infrared-microwave satellite data for basin-scale hydrologic modelling

    Abstract The infrared-microwave rainfall algorithm (IMRA) was developed for retrieving spatial rainfall from infrared (IR) brightness temperatures (TBs) of satellite sensors to provide supplementary information to the rainfall field, and to decrease the traditional dependency on limited rain gauge data that are point measurements. In IMRA, a SLOPE technique (ST) was developed for discriminating rain/no-rain pixels through IR image cloud-top temperature gradient, and 243K as the IR threshold temperature for minimum detectable rainfall rate. IMRA also allows for the adjustment of rainfall derived from IR-TB using microwave (MW) TBs. In this study, IMRA rainfall estimates were assessed on hourly and daily basis for different spatial scales (4, 12, 20, and 100 km) using NCEP stage IV gauge-adjusted radar rainfall data, and daily rain gauge data. IMRA was assessed in terms of the accuracy of the rainfall estimates and the basin streamflow simulated by the hydrologic model, Sacramento soil moisture accounting (SAC-SMA), driven by the rainfall data. The results show that the ST option of IMRA gave accurate satellite rainfall estimates for both light and heavy rainfall systems while the Hessian technique only gave accurate estimates for the convective systems. At daily time step, there was no improvement in IR-satellite rainfall estimates adjusted with MW TBs. The basin-scale streamflow simulated by SAC-SMA driven by satellite rainfall data was marginally better than when SAC-SMA was driven by rain gauge data, and was similar to the case using radar data, reflecting the potential applications of satellite rainfall in basin-scale hydrologic modelling.     Merging formation and current amplification of field-reversed configuration

    Abstract The merging formation of the field-reversed configuration (FRC) has been developed in the TS-3 merging experiment, leading us to a new scenario of FRC slow formation, heating and current amplification. Two force-free spheromaks with opposing toroidal fields were merged together in the axial direction to form a high-, FRC with higher efficiency than the conventional field-reversed theta-pinch method. This unique relaxation from the force-free (, , 0.05 , 0.1) spheromaks to the high-, (, , 0.7 , 1) FRC is attributed to the conversion of toroidal magnetic energy into ion thermal energy through the reconnection outflow. A central ohmic heating (OH) coil worked successfully to amplify the FRC plasma current by a factor of 2. Toroidal mode analysis of magnetic structure indicated that the tilting stability of the oblate FRC was provided by an ion kinetic effect. This oblate FRC is also useful as an initial equilibrium to produce a high-,p spherical tokamak (ST) with diamagnetic toroidal magnetic field, suggesting the close relationship between FRCs and high-,p STs in the second stable region of the ballooning mode. © 2007 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.     Evidence for extensive genetic differentiation among populations of the malaria vector Anopheles arabiensis in Eastern Africa

    Abstract We describe the geographical population structure of the malaria vector Anopheles arabiensis in Eastern Africa. Allelic variation at eight microsatellite loci was scored in samples from nine localities along a 4500 km transect from Sudan to Mozambique. Highly significant differences in genotype frequencies were found between all populations separated by more than 200 km. Populations within Malawi separated by 191 km were indistinguishable, as were those within Sudan separated by 134 km. FST and ,ST gave significant estimates of isolation by distance. These data, lead us to conclude that there are extensive barriers to gene flow in this region. The high estimates of Nm (9.4 from FST and 5.2 from ,ST) indicate recent range expansion in this species rather than extensive contemporary gene flow. [source]


    Space-time ring-TCM codes with CPM based on the decomposed model for transmission over Rayleigh fading channels

    Abstract Space,time (ST) coding is a proved technique for achieving high data rates in 3G mobile systems that combines coding, modulation and multiple transmitters and receivers. A novel algorithm is proposed for ST ring trellis-coded modulation (ST-RTCM) systems with continuous-phase modulation (CPM) when the channel coefficients are known to the receiver. This algorithm is based on the CPM decomposed model, which exploits the memory properties of this modulation method, resulting in a straightforward implementation of joint ST coding and CPM, which is particularly suitable for ring codes. This new scheme is used to investigate the performance of the delay diversity code with CPM over slow Rayleigh fading channels, in particular with MSK which is one of the most widely used modulation methods of continuous phase. Furthermore, a feedback version of delay diversity allowed by the decomposition is tested in 1REC and 1RC systems. This feedback configuration is seen to provide good results for low signal-to-noise ratios. Simulations results are also provided for multilevel ST-RTCM codes that achieve a higher throughput than MSK-coded systems. Additionally the serial concatenation of an outer Reed,Solomon code with an ST-RTCM code is shown, this combination further reduces the error probability and achieves even more reliable communications.     Personality dimensions measured using the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) and NEO-FFI on a Polish sample

    Abstract The results of two self-administered, paper-and-pencil tests based on biosocial theory of personality have been compared simultanously: the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) and NEO Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI). The stability of the personality dimensions was assessed across age, sex and education level samples in a group of 406 Polish adults with major mental diseases excluded by use of PRIME-MD questionnaire. Significant effects of age, sex, and education have been found while comparing personality dimensions in both temperamental (novelty seeking, NS; harm avoidance, HA; reward dependence, RD; persistence, P) and character scales (cooperativeness, C; self-transcendence, ST) in TCI. Among subscales of temperament only NS1, RD4 were stable according to concerning factors. All converted to their age and sex norms NEO-FFI dimensions were stable according to sex. Extraversion scale was changeable depending on age (p = 0.04). Neuroticism dimension was a little higher in lower educated group (p = 0.035). To sum up, it was concluded that sex- and age-specific norms for the dimensions of the Polish version of TCI are necessary considering the established significant differences. Particular personality genetic studies should account for age, sex and also educational differences in their methods of associative studies. Conclusions: In the exploration of personality dimensions on healthy volunteers the Polish version of NEO-FFI corresponds better than TCI to theory of stability and genetic determinants of human personality. As the study included persons with excluded major mental diseases, the sample is appropriate to provide a control group in the reaserch of psychiatric patients using both TCI and NEO-FFI. Significant Outcomes: TCI scores for persons with excluded mental disease are highly changeable depending on age, sex and education.     Development of eclipsed and staggered forms in some hydrogen bonded complexes

    Abstract Intermolecular hydrogen bonding in X3CH···NH3 (X = H, F, Cl, and Br) complexes has been studied by B3LYP, B3PW91, MP2, MP3, MP4, and CCSD methods using 6-311++G(d,p) and AUG-cc-PVTZ basis sets. These complexes could exist in both eclipsed (EC) and staggered (ST) forms. The differences between binding energies of EC and ST forms are negligible and all EC and ST shapes correspond to minimum stationary states. The order of stabilities of them is in an agreement with the results of atoms in molecules (AIM) and natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses. On the basis of low differences between binding energies, ST forms are more stable than EC forms in all complexes with the exception of Br3CH···NH3, which behaves just opposite.
