Selected AbstractsLooking for Coherence within the European Community*EUROPEAN LAW JOURNAL, Issue 2 2005Stefano Bertea It focuses on a specific dimension of this relationship and shows how the appeals to coherence made by the European Court of Justice have shaped a particular branch of the European legal order, namely, the judicial review of Community acts. The analysis of the Court of Justice's case law in this field shows that in its extensive use of coherence the Court of Justice explored and brought into play different types of coherence and, while it failed to distinguish between them, it made use of sorts of coherence that thus far legal theorists have disregarded. The article concludes that a closer collaboration between legal theory and legal practice would be profitable for both legal theorists and Community law specialists. [source] A generalized dimension-reduction method for multidimensional integration in stochastic mechanicsINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL FOR NUMERICAL METHODS IN ENGINEERING, Issue 12 2004H. Xu Abstract A new, generalized, multivariate dimension-reduction method is presented for calculating statistical moments of the response of mechanical systems subject to uncertainties in loads, material properties, and geometry. The method involves an additive decomposition of an N -dimensional response function into at most S -dimensional functions, where S,N; an approximation of response moments by moments of input random variables; and a moment-based quadrature rule for numerical integration. A new theorem is presented, which provides a convenient means to represent the Taylor series up to a specific dimension without involving any partial derivatives. A complete proof of the theorem is given using two lemmas, also proved in this paper. The proposed method requires neither the calculation of partial derivatives of response, as in commonly used Taylor expansion/perturbation methods, nor the inversion of random matrices, as in the Neumann expansion method. Eight numerical examples involving elementary mathematical functions and solid-mechanics problems illustrate the proposed method. Results indicate that the multivariate dimension-reduction method generates convergent solutions and provides more accurate estimates of statistical moments or multidimensional integration than existing methods, such as first- and second-order Taylor expansion methods, statistically equivalent solutions, quasi-Monte Carlo simulation, and the fully symmetric interpolatory rule. While the accuracy of the dimension-reduction method is comparable to that of the fourth-order Neumann expansion method, a comparison of CPU time suggests that the former is computationally far more efficient than the latter. [source] Fun in the family: tourism and the Commonwealth GamesINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF TOURISM RESEARCH, Issue 6 2008Leonie Lockstone Abstract This paper uses the context of the Commonwealth in order to focus on a specific dimension of tourism that is located within it, that of the mega all-Commonwealth event, the Commonwealth Games, and its impact in tourism terms. Sports events and tourism are closely linked and it is abundantly clear that the tourism potential of mega sporting events such as the Commonwealth Games is a major factor in encouraging cities to bid to host such events. Such tourism potential relates to the immediate attraction of the event to athletes and officials associated with the event, volunteers and paid employees who work at the event and, in particular, international and domestic visitors as games spectators and participants. This paper sets the Commonwealth Games in the wider context of sports tourism and will address their impact through consideration of the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia. [source] Poorly performing physicians: Does the script concordance test detect bad clinical reasoning?,THE JOURNAL OF CONTINUING EDUCATION IN THE HEALTH PROFESSIONS, Issue 3 2010François Goulet MD Abstract Introduction Evaluation of poorly performing physicians is a worldwide concern for licensing bodies. The Collège des Médecins du Québec currently assesses the clinical competence of physicians previously identified with potential clinical competence difficulties through a day-long procedure called the Structured Oral Interview (SOI). Two peer physicians produce a qualitative report. In view of remediation activities and the potential for legal consequences, more information on the clinical reasoning process (CRP) and quantitative data on the quality of that process is needed. This study examines the Script Concordance Test (SCT), a tool that provides a standardized and objective measure of a specific dimension of CRP, clinical data interpretation (CDI), to determine whether it could be useful in that endeavor. Methods Over a 2-year period, 20 family physicians took, in addition to the SOI, a 1-hour paper-and-pencil SCT. Three evaluators, blind as to the purpose of the experiment, retrospectively reviewed SOI reports and were asked to estimate clinical reasoning quality. Subjects were classified into 2 groups (below and above median of the score distribution) for the 2 assessment methods. Agreement between classifications is estimated with the use of the Kappa coefficient. Results Intraclass correlation for SOI was 0.89. Cronbach alpha coefficient for the SCT was 0.90. Agreement between methods was found for 13 participants (Kappa: 0.30, P = 0.18), but 7 out of 20 participants were classified differently in both methods. All participants but 1 had SCT scores below 2 SD of panel mean, thus indicating serious deficiencies in CDI. Discussion The finding that the majority of the referred group did so poorly on CDI tasks has great interest for assessment as well as for remediation. In remediation of prescribing skills, adding SCT to SOI is useful for assessment of cognitive reasoning in poorly performing physicians. The structured oral interview should be improved with more precise reporting by those who assess the clinical reasoning process of examinees, and caution is recommended in interpreting SCT scores; they reflect only a part of the reasoning process. [source] Ten Dimensions of Health and Their Relationships with Overall Self-Reported Health and Survival in a Predominately Religiously Active Elderly Population: The Cache County Memory StudyJOURNAL OF AMERICAN GERIATRICS SOCIETY, Issue 2 2006Truls Østbye MD OBJECTIVES: To document the extent of healthy aging along 10 different dimensions in a population known for its longevity. DESIGN: A cohort study with baseline measures of overall self-reported health and health along 10 specific dimensions; analyses investigated the 10 dimensions as predictors of self-reported health and 10-year mortality. SETTING: Cache County, Utah, which is among the areas with the highest conditional life expectancy at age 65 in the United States. PARTICIPANTS: Inhabitants of Cache County aged 65 and older (January 1, 1995). MEASUREMENTS: Self-reported overall health and 10 specific dimensions of healthy aging: independent living, vision, hearing, activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living, absence of physical illness, cognition, healthy mood, social support and participation, and religious participation and spirituality. RESULTS: This elderly population was healthy overall. With few exceptions, 80% to 90% of persons aged 65 to 75 were healthy according to each measure used. Prevalence of excellent and good self-reported health decreased with age, to approximately 60% in those aged 85 and older. Even in the oldest old, the majority of respondents were independent in activities of daily living. Although vision, hearing, and mood were significant predictors of overall self-reported health in the final models, age, sex, and cognition were significant only in the final survival models. CONCLUSION: This population has a high prevalence of most factors representing healthy aging. The predictors of overall self-reported health are distinct from the predictors of survival in this age group and, being potentially modifiable, are amenable to clinical and public health efforts. Background., Nurses experience role discrepancy, which refers to incompatibility between the roles nurses desire and expect to take, and the roles they actually engage in at work. However, there is a paucity of information as to how this role discrepancy affects nurses' intention to quit their jobs. Design., A correlational design was used to investigate the impact of role discrepancy on nurses' intention to quit their jobs. Methods., A total of 346 Australian nurses participated in this study by completing questionnaires. The results were analysed by t -test, polynomial regression and response surface analysis. Results., Nurses tended to experience role discrepancy, in particular, in decision making with hospital policies and provision of patient education. The overall results show that this role discrepancy contributes to nurses' intention to quit their jobs. Nurses' intention to quit their jobs also increased when they had a low desire to engage in nursing roles and when they only performed a few roles. When specific dimensions of nursing roles were examined, a role discrepancy in the use of nursing skills, such as participation in decision making and providing patient education and emotional support, had little impact on their turnover intention. On the contrary, a role discrepancy in task delegation practice showed a significant association with nurses' intention to leave their jobs. Conclusions., Role discrepancy has been experienced by many nurses, and this discrepancy partially contributes to nurses' intention to quit their jobs. Relevance to clinical practice., To reduce nursing turnover, it is important to create a work environment where nurses are inspired to engage in various nursing roles and their work desires are reinforced by existing work opportunities. Rak This article examines the therapeutic work in three cases (child, adolescent, adult) to study the impact of a supportive and nurturing parent early in life upon the development of resilience. The close analysis of the clinical material of each client's personal narrative is the primary source. The metaphor of "heroes in the nursery" is posited as a vehicle for enhancing understandings of the development of resilience. Each case provides additive meaning to recent studies that elevate the importance of the memories of parents to the development of resilient responses of children later in life. Each case reveals specific dimensions of the impact of heroes in the nursery which extend our understandings of resiliency in children and adolescents as a proactive response to stress, trauma, and loss. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Swenson Peer collaboration can be a useful tool in a school classroom to help students perform at their best. With whom should students be paired, though? Previous research yields inconsistent findings regarding whether the benefits of peer collaboration depend on the gender or friendship of collaborators. We paired students with a same-gender friend or a nonfriend in their classroom to examine whether friendship and specific dimensions of relationship quality were important for understanding adolescent (N = 132 high-school students) boys' and girls' performance on a scientific reasoning task. Dimensions of relationship quality were related to task performance with greater perceived conflict predicting poorer performance. Girls outperformed boys, but the difference was marginal and nonsignificant after accounting for dimensions of relationship quality. Friends' and nonfriends' performance was similar. Results are informative for educators who use collaboration as an instructional technique and for other professionals who work to support the development of effective reasoning and problem-solving skills among adolescents. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
