Spermatozoal ultrastructure in three Atlantic solenocerid shrimps (Decapoda, Dendrobranchiata)

JOURNAL OF MORPHOLOGY, Issue 3 2006
Antonio Medina
Abstract The spermatozoal ultrastructure in three solenocerid shrimps (Solenocera membranacea, S. africana, and Pleoticus muelleri) from different Atlantic locations was examined with the aim of increasing understanding of the phylogenetic relationships in the Dendrobranchiata. A considerable structural similarity between the sperm of these species and those of penaeid shrimps supports a close affinity between the Penaeidae and Solenoceridae. However, significant differences in the sperm morphology of the previously investigated sicyoniids (namely, a greater complexity of the acrosomal complex) suggest evolutionary separation of the Sicyoniidae from the assemblage Penaeidae-Solenoceridae. Two ultrastructural features distinguish the spermatozoa of the three studied solenocerids from penaeid sperm: 1) separation of the plasma and acrosome membranes at the base of the spike and anterior region of the cap, and 2) asymmetry of the acrosomal cap, which appears to be a synapomorphy of the group. No striking ultrastructural differences were found between the spermatozoa of the closely related species S. membranacea and S. africana, whereas a great number of morphological differences separate the spermatozoa of Pleoticus from those of Solenocera (e.g., shape of the acrosomal cap, structural arrangement of the contents of the whole acrosome vesicle, thickness and distribution of the cytoplasm, and external shape of the spike). Spermiogenesis and spermatozoal ultrastructure in Trichomycteridae (Teleostei: Ostariophysi: Siluriformes)

ACTA ZOOLOGICA, Issue 4 2010

Abstract Spadella, M.A., Oliveira, C. and Quagio-Grassiotto, I. 2009. Spermiogenesis and spermatozoal ultrastructure in Trichomycteridae (Teleostei: Ostariophysi: Siluriformes). ,Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 91: 373,389. Siluriformes comprises the most diverse and widely distributed ostariophysan group, a fish assemblage that includes about three quarters of the freshwater fish of the world. In this study, the ultrastructural characterization of spermiogenesis and spermatozoa in specimens of Copionodontinae (the sister group to all other trichomycterids), Trichomycterinae (a derived trichomycterid group), and Ituglanis (a genus not assigned to any trichomycterid subfamily) is presented. The comparative analyses of the data show that trichomycterid species share six of seven analyzed spermiogenesis characters, reinforcing the monophyly of the group. Analyses of trichomycterid sperm ultrastructure showed that the species studied share the same character states for nine of seventeen characters analyzed. Copionodon orthiocarinatus and Ituglanis amazonicus each share more ultrastructural characters with species of Trichomycterus than with one another. Regarding the families of Loricarioidea, the species of Trichomycteridae share more characters of spermatogenesis, spermiogenesis, and sperm with representatives of the families Callichthyidae, Loricariidae, and Scoloplacidae than with Nematogenyidae, its hypothesized sister group. With the exception of the family Nematogenyidae, the character similarities observed reinforce the monophyly of the superfamily Loricarioidea. [source]

Ultrastructure of spermatozoa of lizards in the genus Mabuya from Central Brazil

ACTA ZOOLOGICA, Issue 1 2009
S. M. De Sá Mandel
Abstract This is the first description of spermatozoal ultrastructure of Mabuya skinks. The spermatozoa of the species studied are filiform, consisting of a head region, a midpiece and a tail. The head is characterized by the following features: a depressed acrosome anteriorly, an acrosome vesicle divided into cortex and medulla, paracrystalline subacrosomal material, a pointed tip perforatorium, a circular perforatorium base plate inside the subacrosomal cone, an epinuclear lucent zone separated from the subacrosomal cone by a membrane, a large nuclear rostrum, and round nuclear shoulders. The midpiece presents a bilateral stratified laminar structure, a distal centriole, peripheral fibres 3 and 8 grossly enlarged, columnar mitochondria with linear cristae, dense body rings and a triangular annulus. Finally, the tail is composed of a principal piece and an end piece. An axoneme and a fibrous sheath characterize the principal piece, and the end piece is formed only by an axoneme, which loses its pattern in the last portion. Comparisons with members of Teiidae revealed differences in the numbers of dense rings. A well-developed epinuclear lucent zone in Mabuya is less prominent among teiids. In the spermatozoa of Mabuya, the first ring of dense bodies is very large, uniquely resembling the condition present in snakes. [source]

A dendrobranchiate, Peisos petrunkevitchi (Decapoda, Sergestidae), with reptant-like sperm: a spermiocladistic assessment

ACTA ZOOLOGICA, Issue 2 2004
Marcelo A. Scelzo
Abstract The spermatozoon of Peisos petrunkevitchi differs significantly from those of any of the investigated dendrobranchiates in the anterior fusiform acrosome, lacking a spike, and embedded in (instead of capping) the nuclear region. In contrast, the position of the acrosome and the internal arrangement of its contents, as well as the apomorphic presence of a pair of centrioles (absent in all known dendrobranchiate spermatozoa) at the base of the acrosomal perforatorium, indicate a close affinity between this sperm plan and that found in reptants, especially anomurans and brachyurans. Based on the present and previous observations on decapod spermatozoal ultrastructure, we review the phylogeny of dendrobranchiate spermatozoa in the perspective of most recent phylogenetic analyses of malacostracan crustaceans.
