Performance of very-high-order upwind schemes for DNS of compressible wall-turbulence

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL FOR NUMERICAL METHODS IN FLUIDS, Issue 7 2010
G. A. Gerolymos
Abstract The purpose of the present paper is to evaluate very-high-order upwind schemes for the direct numerical simulation (DNS) of compressible wall-turbulence. We study upwind-biased (UW) and weighted essentially nonoscillatory (WENO) schemes of increasingly higher order-of-accuracy (J. Comp. Phys. 2000; 160:405,452), extended up to WENO17 (AIAA Paper 2009-1612, 2009). Analysis of the advection, diffusion equation, both as ,x,0 (consistency), and for fixed finite cell-Reynolds-number Re,x (grid-resolution), indicates that the very-high-order upwind schemes have satisfactory resolution in terms of points-per-wavelength (PPW). Computational results for compressible channel flow (Re,[180, 230]; M,CL,[0.35, 1.5]) are examined to assess the influence of the spatial order of accuracy and the computational grid-resolution on predicted turbulence statistics, by comparison with existing compressible and incompressible DNS databases. Despite the use of baseline O(,t2) time-integration and O(,x2) discretization of the viscous terms, comparative studies of various orders-of-accuracy for the convective terms demonstrate that very-high-order upwind schemes can reproduce all the DNS details obtained by pseudospectral schemes, on computational grids of only slightly higher density. Local Capitalisms, Local Citizenship and Translocality: Rescaling from Below in the Pearl River Delta Region, China

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF URBAN AND REGIONAL RESEARCH, Issue 2 2007
ALAN SMART
Abstract Chinese economic reforms have profoundly changed the scale at which things get done. Much of the existing literature on scale has concentrated on the politics of rescaling from above. Less has been written about rescaling initiatives from below, the focus of this study. It distinguishes three important localisms. Local capitalisms treats capitalism as subordinate to local social and political processes that provide crucial conditions of existence. Local citizenship sees processes of entitlement and exclusion as accomplished locally rather than through national frameworks. Translocality describes the ways in which claims are made on the loyalties of those possessing capital but residing elsewhere and the promotion of the place through image-building and physical/social infrastructural enhancements. These three distinct localisms overlap and interact in a variety of ways to shape a new social and spatial order in post-reform China. A detailed study of the practices of localism in the Dongguan city-region reveals the ways in which the emergence of capitalism has been dependent on pre-existing social connections and based on villages and townships. The entitlements of citizenship are polarized between the local hukou population and the migrant workers irrespective of the national definition of social safety net and regardless of the physical presence of the individuals. On Public Toilets in Beijing

JOURNAL OF ARCHITECTURAL EDUCATION, Issue 4 2000
Tim C. Geisler
Public Toilets in China, as in most parts of the world throughout history, are stigmatized as unclean, associated with illicit activity, and joked about. But they were conceived by the Communists in China as symbols of cooperative living. Although they still pose grave sanitation problems, they exemplify communist ideals of simplicity, functionalism, and working-class sensibilities. They employ sound architectural principles of lighting, ventilation, and urban situation, and are playful in design. Communist Urbanism, defined as the spatial order of communal living, reserves a place of honor for the public toilet. [source]

Towards a feminist geopolitics

THE CANADIAN GEOGRAPHER/LE GEOGRAPHE CANADIEN, Issue 2 2001
JENNIFER HYNDMAN
The intersections and conversations between feminist geography and political geography have been surprisingly few. The notion of a feminist geopolitics remains undeveloped in geography. This paper aims to create a theoretical and practical space in which to articulate a feminist geopolitics. Feminist geopolitics is not an alternative theory of geopolitics, nor the ushering in of a new spatial order, but is an approach to global issues with feminist politics in mind. ,Feminist' in this context refers to analyses and political interventions that address the unequal and often violent relationships among people based on real or perceived differences. Building upon the literature from critical geopolitics, feminist international relations, and transnational feminist studies, I develop a framework for feminist political engagement. The paper interrogates concepts of human security and juxtaposes them with state security, arguing for a more accountable, embodied, and responsive notion of geopolitics. A feminist geopolitics is sought by examining politics at scales other than that of the nation-state; by challenging the public/private divide at a global scale; and by analyzing the politics of mobility for perpetrators of crimes against humanity. As such, feminist geopolitics is a critical approach and a contingent set of political practices operating at scales finer and coarser than the nation-state. [source]

Oriented Ensembles in Ultrafast Electron Diffraction

CHEMPHYSCHEM, Issue 7 2006
J. Spencer Baskin
Abstract Electron scattering expressions are presented which are applicable to very general conditions of implementation of anisotropic ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) experiments on the femto- and picosecond time scale. "Magic angle" methods for extracting from the experimental diffraction patterns both the isotropic scalar contribution (population dynamics) and the angular (orientation-dependent) contribution are described. To achieve this result, the molecular scattering intensity is given as an expansion in terms of the moments of the transition-dipole distribution created by the linearly polarized excitation laser pulse. The isotropic component (n=0 moment) depends only on population and scalar internuclear separations, and the higher moments reflect bond angles and evolve in time due to rotational motion of the molecules. This clear analytical separation facilitates assessment of the role of experimental variables in determining the influence of anisotropic orientational distributions of the molecular ensembles on the measured diffraction patterns. Practical procedures to separate the isotropic and anisotropic components of experimental data are evaluated and demonstrated with application to reactions. The influence of vectorial properties (bond angles and rotational dynamics) on the anisotropic component adds a new dimension to UED, arising through the imposition of spatial order on otherwise randomly oriented ensembles. Emergence and the Forms of Metabolism

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN, Issue 2 2010
Michael Weinstock
Abstract Earlier this year, Michael Weinstock published a seminal book, The Architecture of Emergence: The Evolution of Form in Nature and Civilisation, which challenges established cultural and architectural histories. The conventional worldview is expanded by placing human development alongside ecological development: the history of cultural evolution and the production of cities are set in the context of processes and forms of the natural world. As well as providing a far-reaching thesis, Weinstock's book gives lucid and accessible explanations of the complex systems of the physical world. In this abridged extract from Chapter 5, Weinstock explains the dynamics of individual and collective metabolisms from which intelligence and social and spatial orders emerge.
