Social vulnerability and the natural and built environment: a model of flood casualties in Texas

Studies on the impacts of hurricanes, tropical storms, and tornados indicate that poor communities of colour suffer disproportionately in human death and injury., Few quantitative studies have been conducted on the degree to which flood events affect socially vulnerable populations. We address this research void by analysing 832 countywide flood events in Texas from 1997,2001. Specifically, we examine whether geographic localities characterised by high percentages of socially vulnerable populations experience significantly more casualties due to flood events, adjusting for characteristics of the natural and built environment. Zero-inflated negative binomial regression models indicate that the odds of a flood casualty increase with the level of precipitation on the day of a flood event, flood duration, property damage caused by the flood, population density, and the presence of socially vulnerable populations. Odds decrease with the number of dams, the level of precipitation on the day before a recorded flood event, and the extent to which localities have enacted flood mitigation strategies. The study concludes with comments on hazard-resilient communities and protection of casualty-prone populations. [source]

Influence of psychosocial factors on the development of sleep bruxism among children

Background., Bruxism is described as an orofacial parafunction that affects both children and adults. The maintenance of the childhood habit into adulthood may compromise health. As there are few studies on this issue, there is a need for further research on sleep bruxism among children. Aim., The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of sleep bruxism in children and the influence of psychosocial factors. Methods., A cross-sectional study was carried out on 652 randomly selected children aged 7,10 years at public and private schools in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The instruments used were: questionnaire for parents, Child Stress Scale, and the scales on neuroticism and responsibility from the prevalidated Big Five Questionnaire for Children. Psychological tests were administered and evaluated by psychologists. Sleep bruxism among children was reported by parents. The Social Vulnerability Index from the city hall database was used to determine the social classification of the families. The chi-squared test, binary and multivariate logistic regressions were used, with the significance level set at 5%. Results., A 35.3% prevalence of bruxism was found. No association was found between bruxism and stress, gender, age, or social vulnerability. The adjusted logistic model determined that children with high levels of neuroticism (OR = 1.9, CI 1.3,2.6) and responsibility (OR = 2.2, CI 1.0,5.0) are twice as likely to have the habit of sleep bruxism when compared to those who have low levels of these personality traits. Conclusions., A high degree of responsibility and neuroticism, which are individual personality traits, are determinant factors for the development of sleep bruxism among children. [source]


Prevalence of hepatitis B and hepatitis C virus infections in France in 2004: Social factors are important predictors after adjusting for known risk factors

Abstract To monitor the prevalence of hepatitis B and hepatitis C a cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2004 among French metropolitan residents. A complex sampling design was used to enroll 14,416 adult participants aged 18,80 years. Data collected included demographic and social characteristics and risk factors. Sera were tested for anti-HCV, HCV-RNA, anti-HBc and HBsAg. Data were analyzed with SUDAAN® software to provide weighted estimates for the French metropolitan resident population. The overall anti-HCV prevalence was 0.84% (95% CI: 0.65,1.10). Among anti-HCV positive individuals, 57.4% (95% CI: 43.2,70.5) knew their status. Factors associated independently with positive anti-HCV were drug use (intravenous and nasal), blood transfusion before 1992, a history of tattoos, low socioeconomic status, being born in a country where anti-HCV prevalence >2.5%, and age >29 years. The overall anti-HBc prevalence was 7.3% (95%: 6.5,8.2). Independent risk factors for anti-HBc were intravenous drug use, being a man who has sex with men, low socioeconomic status, a stay in a psychiatric facility or facility for the mentally disabled, <12 years of education, being born in a country where HBsAg prevalence >2%, age >29 and male sex. The HCV RNA and HBsAg prevalence were 0.53% (95% CI: 0.40,0.70) and 0.65% (95% CI: 0.45,0.93), respectively. Among HBsAg positive individuals, 44.8% (95% CI: 22.8,69.1) knew their status. Anti-HCV prevalence was close to the 1990s estimates whereas HBsAg prevalence estimate was greater than expected. The dynamic nature of social disadvantage: implications for hazard exposure and vulnerability in Greater Vancouver

The current study explores vulnerability to hazards in Greater Vancouver over a 15-year period (1986 to 2001). Results illustrate how social disadvantage is multi-dimensional and emerges from the social geography of a city. The study illustrates the speed with which both the structure and spatial patterns of social disadvantage can change in cities experiencing rapid growth or redevelopment. The study also suggests that Greater Vancouver does not display consistent patterns of minority- or income-based environmental inequity in hazard exposure, which raises questions about the role of various policies in ameliorating vulnerability to natural and technological hazards. La nature dynamique de la défavorisation sociale: conséquences sur l'exposition au risque et la vulnérabilité dans le Grand Vancouver L'urbanisation et la réurbanisation modifient sans cesse les schémas spatiaux de la défavorisation sociale et de l'exposition au risque qui, à leur tour, contribuent à la vulnérabilité sociale. Cette étude présente une analyse de la vulnérabilité aux risques dans le Grand Vancouver pendant une période de quinze ans (1986,2001). Les résultats de l'analyse font ressortir combien la défavorisation sociale comporte plusieurs dimensions et se dégage de la géographie sociale d'une ville. L'étude illustre la vitesse avec laquelle la structure et les schémas spatiaux de la défavorisation sociale peuvent se modifier au sein de villes qui connaissent une forte croissance ou un réaménagement. Il ressort également de l'étude que le Grand Vancouver ne présente pas de schémas cohérents d'inégalité environnementale à l'exposition aux risques liés au statut minoritaire ou au revenu. Ceci soulève la question de savoir comment les diverses politiques peuvent contribuer à la vulnérabilité aux dangers naturels et technologiques. [source]
