Sustainability quotients and the social footprint

Abstract We argue that most of what passes for mainstream reporting in corporate sustainability management fails to do precisely the one thing it purports to do , which is make it possible for organizations to measure and report on the sustainability of their operations. It fails because of the lack of what the Global Reporting Initiative calls sustainability context, a shortcoming from which it, too, suffers. We suggest that this missing context calls for a new notion of sustainability (the binary perspective), which can be conceptualized in the form of sustainability quotients. We provide specifications for such quotients in ecological and social contexts, and suggest that sustainability is best understood in terms of the impact organizations can have on the carrying capacity of non-financial capital, or what in the social case we call anthro capital. We conclude by introducing a quantitative quotients-based method for measuring and reporting on the social sustainability of an organization, the social footprint method. MAKING SUSTAINABLE CREATIVE/CULTURAL SPACE IN SHANGHAI AND SINGAPORE,

ABSTRACT. Shanghai and Singapore are two economically vibrant Asian cities that have recently adopted creative/cultural economy strategies. In this article I examine new spatial expressions of cultural and economic interests in the two cities: state-vaunted cultural edifices and organically evolved cultural spaces. I discuss the simultaneous precariousness and sustainability of these spaces, focusing on Shanghai's Grand Theatre and Moganshan Lu and on Singapore's Esplanade,Theatres by the Bay and Wessex Estate. Their cultural sustainability is understood as their ability to support the development of indigenous content and local idioms in artistic work. Their social sustainability is examined in terms of the social inclusion and community bonds they engender; environmental sustainability refers to the articulation with the language of existing urban forms and the preservation of or improvements to the landscape. Although both Shanghai and Singapore demonstrate simultaneous precariousness and sustainability, Singapore's city-state status places greater pressure on it to ensure sustainability than does Shanghai, within a much larger China in which Beijing serves as the cultural hearth while Shanghai remains essentially a commercial center. Fear of the Dead as a Factor in Social Self-Organization

The image of dead person returning to life was the most ancient source of irrational fear (i.e. fear not caused by objective menace) appeared in culture. This conclusion is argued with empirical data from archeology and ethnography. Fear has been expressed in funeral rites, the tying of extremities, burning and dismemberment of dead bodies, and ritual cannibalism (compensatory necrophilia) etc. At the same time, it was attended by effective care for helpless cripples, which seems to descend to the Lower Paleolithic as well. Dread of posthumous revenge played a decisive regulative role at the earliest stage of anthropogenesis, as the disparity between artificial weapons (the tools) and natural aggression-retention mechanisms (the instincts) became self-destructive. In the new conditions, individuals with normal animal mind were doomed to catastrophe. Those hominid groups proved viable, in which mystical fear, a product of unnaturally developed imagination, bounded lethal conflicts among kinsmen. The phobias corresponded to the psycho-nervous system's "strategic pathology"; that was a condition for early hominids' self-preservation. As a result, a causal connection between instrumental potential, cultural regulation quality and social sustainability (the techno-humanitarian balance law) was formed, which has been a mechanism of social selection for all of human history and prehistory. Power and Wisdom: Toward a History of Social Behavior

Cross-disciplinary studies carried out lately by Russian scholars discovered a causal relationship between the three variables: technological potential, cultural regulation quality, and social sustainability. The patterns called techno-humanitarian balance law, states that the higher production and war technologies' power, the more refined the behaviorregulation means (consolidated values and norms, etc.) that are required for self-preservation of the society. The article shows that the law has controlled social selection for all of human history and prehistory, discarding unbalanced social organisms, as far as they could not cope with ecological and (or) geopolitical crises, which had been caused by their own activities. It also shows how successive growth of instrumental opportunities in long-term retrospection has dramatically led to the consecutive perfection of cultural and psychological regulation mechanisms. Relevant calculations, comparative-anthropological evidence, and historical illustrations are provided. Regularities in mental processes are described that precede and accompany crisis-causing behavior, to certain extent regardless of population's historical and cultural peculiarities. [source]


Seeking red herrings in the wood: tending the shared spaces of environmental and feminist geographies

In this article I argue the need for feminist and environmental geographers to work more diligently to find, mind and tend the intersections of their research agendas to enrich scholarship and deepen impacts on public policy. Such a project requires us to move beyond an obvious call to acknowledge one another's work and towards the boundaries of our respective fields in order to co-create ,boundary objects' that provide opportunities for mutual exchange, collaboration and learning. Rather than being ,red herrings' or diversions from our main research foci, boundary objects bring new insights to taken-for-granted concepts. I focus on one example to argue that social sustainability of rural places is better understood by an integrated understanding of what constitutes a ,worker' in a forestry community. A redefinition of the worker that draws on insights and interests from both environmental and feminist geographers reveals an underlying gender bias in environmental decision-making processes and illustrates how the concept of social sustainability has been artificially restricted in practice. Nevertheless, collaborations are never easy. I draw attention to potential challenges of such collaborations that include the need to establish mutually agreeable protocols, joint commitment to constructive, respectful debate and strategies to ensure that research provides meaningful contributions to theory and public policy. Dans cet article, je vais tenter de montrer que les géographes féministes et les géographes de l'environnement auront à travailler avec plus d'acharnement pour reconnaître, étudier et entretenir les points communs de leurs agendas de recherche en vue d'augmenter la valeur scientifique des études et d'accroître les retombées sur les politiques publiques. Un tel projet exige que nous puissions dépasser le stade de la reconnaissance de nos travaux et se tourner ainsi vers les frontières de nos disciplines afin de co-créer des ,objets frontaliers' qui offrent des possibilités d'échanges d'idées, de collaboration et d'apprentissage. Plutôt qu'être des ,fausses pistes' ou des déviations de nos principaux thèmes de recherche, ces objets frontaliers pourraient apporter un éclairage nouveau sur des concepts tenus pour acquis. À l'aide d'un exemple, j'avance que pour mieux comprendre la durabilité sociale en milieux ruraux, il faut acquérir une compréhension intégrée de l'ensemble des dimensions d'un ,ouvrier' membre d'une communauté forestière. L'ouvrier est redéfini en mettant à contribution les connaissances et intérêts des géographes environnementaux et féministes. Cette définition met au jour un parti pris fondé sur le sexe dans les processus décisionnels en matière d'environnement et démontre de quelle façon le concept de la durabilité sociale s'en trouve artificiellement restreint dans la pratique. Les collaborations ne sont cependant jamais faciles àétablir. J'attire l'attention sur les difficultés potentielles de ces collaborations concernant notamment la mise en place de protocoles acceptables pour les deux parties, la promesse de tenir des débats constructifs et respectueux, et les stratégies visant à garantir que la recherche participe de manière vitale autant au développement de la théorie que des politiques publiques. A ,business opportunity' model of corporate social responsibility for small- and medium-sized enterprises

In their book ,Corporate Social Opportunity', Grayson and Hodges maintain that ,the driver for business success is entrepreneurialism, a competitive instinct and a willingness to look for innovation from non-traditional areas such as those increasingly found within the corporate social responsibility (CSR) agenda'. Such opportunities are described as ,commercially viable activities which also advance environmental and social sustainability'. There are three dimensions to corporate social opportunity (CSO) , innovation in products and services, serving unserved markets and building new business models. While small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have traditionally been presented as non-entrepreneurial in this area, this paper demonstrates how SMEs can take advantage of the opportunities presented by CSR. Using data from 24 detailed case studies of UK SMEs from a range of sectors, the paper explores the numerous CSR opportunities that present themselves to SMEs, such as developing innovative products and services and exploiting niche markets. There are inevitable challenges for SMEs undertaking CSR, but by their very nature they have many characteristics that can aid the adoption of CSR; the paper explores these characteristics and how the utilisation of positive qualities will help SMEs make the most of CSOs. Integrating CSR into the core of a company is crucial to its success. Using the case studies to illustrate key points, the paper suggests how CSR can be built into a company's systems and become ,just the way we do things'. There are a number of factors that characterise the CSO ,mentality' in an organisation, and Grayson and Hodges's book describes seven steps that will move a company in the direction of a ,want to do' CSO mentality. This paper adapts these steps for SMEs, and by transferring and building on knowledge from the 24 detailed case studies, it develops a ,business opportunity' model of CSR for SMEs. [source]
