An analytical solution of one-dimensional consolidation for soft sensitive soil ground

Abstract An analytical solution of one-dimensional consolidation for soft sensitive soil ground is presented. The moving boundary is introduced to indicate the notable change of consolidation behaviour of sensitive soil with the increase of stress level. It is assumed that the soil structure of the upper subsoil gradually destroys downwards with the dissipation of pore pressure, and the coefficient of consolidation as well as the coefficient of permeability of the upper subsoil become small, which hinders the dissipation of pore pressure of the lower subsoil. The consolidation degree curve obtained from the present solution is found to lie between the two curves obtained from Terzaghi one-dimensional consolidation solution with the parameters of the undisturbed soil and the remolded soil. The calculated results provide a new explanation for a general phenomenon in the consolidation of soft sensitive soil ground, as that for high loadings the consolidation is longer than for small ones. It should be pointed out from this study that both the deep mixing method and the long vertical drains methods are effective techniques for improving deep sensitive soil ground. Effect of rheological behavior of epoxy during precuring on foaming

Abstract In this study, the effect of rheological behavior of epoxy during precuring on foaming was investigated. Dynamic time sweep test of epoxy/curing agent (100/1, w/w) was conducted. The viscosities as a function of time showed extremely rapid increase from the order of 102,103 to 106Pa · s at a certain time, followed by slow increase of the viscosities. Dynamic frequency sweep test of precured epoxy with curing agent was conducted at 90°C. The critical gelation time was obtained by using rheological criterion proposed by Winter and Chambon. We found that the slopes of G,(,) and G,(,) decreased with increasing precuring time. Correspondingly, tan , showed a change from negative to positive slope at a critical time. By using the results, the critical gelation time was determined as t = 895,935 s. Samples of epoxy/curing agent/blowing agent (100/1/0.5) were precured for 960,1620 s. And then precured samples were foamed at 230°C for 300 s to decompose chemical blowing agent. The formed bubble size distribution becomes sharp with increase of the precuring time. There are roughly two sizes of bubbles when precured for relatively short time (t < 1080 s) before foaming: large bubbles (>100 ,m) and small ones (,30 ,m). On the other hand, foams precured for long time (t > 1200 s) before foaming, large bubbles disappear, and the average diameter of the bubble becomes small while the porosity is low. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Body size and determinants of laying date variation in the Snow Petrel Pagodroma nivea

We studied several determinants of laying date variation and the relationship between laying date and reproductive success in the Snow Petrel Pagodroma nivea. The effects of female body size and condition, year, individual laying period, colony size, mate fidelity, previous reproductive success, and duration of the pre-laying exodus on laying date, were investigated during a 3-year study. The average laying date was 4 December. The laying period was compressed into 10,16 days and was very constant from year to year, both for the population as a whole and for individual females. The laying period of individual females varied from year to year on average by less than one day. Body size explained 24% of the variation in laying dates, with large females laying their egg later than small ones. Laying in large colonies occurred c. 2 days later than in small colonies, mainly because a higher proportion of large females bred in large colonies. There was no effect of mate fidelity, age, body condition and previous reproductive success on laying date, but the duration of the pre-laying exodus was strongly correlated with laying date. Smaller females had shorter pre-laying exodus (c. 17.7 days) than larger ones (c. 20.4 days). During the three years of the study reproductive success either increased, decreased or did not vary with laying date. Although body size is not maintained by selection on laying date alone, the genetic body size component of this species suggests that balancing selection on body size may act through laying date. Multiple differentiation centres of a non-Mediterranean butterfly species in south-eastern Europe

Abstract Aim, The analysis of the phylogeographical structures of many European species reveals the importance of Mediterranean glacial refugia for many thermophilic species, but also underlines the relevance of extra-Mediterranean glacial differentiation centres for a number of temperate species. In this context, phylogeographical analyses of species from south-eastern Europe are highly important for a comprehensive understanding of Europe as a whole. Location, Romania and Bulgaria. Methods, We analysed 19 allozyme loci for 615 individuals of the temperate butterfly species Erebia medusa from 28 populations. Results, These populations had an intermediate genetic diversity, but the Bulgarian populations were significantly more diverse than the ones north of the Danube in Romania. The differentiation among populations was strong, and 52.1% of the genetic variance among populations was distributed between these two countries. The genetic differentiation was considerably stronger in Romania than in Bulgaria, but several sublineages were distinguished within each of these countries. Main conclusions, The observed genetic structure is so strong that it is most probably the result of glacial differentiation processes in south-eastern Europe and not a post-glacial structure. The strong differentiation into the two groups north and south of the Danube suggests a separating effect by this river valley. The strong differentiation accompanied with genetic impoverishment in Romania suggests the existence of several differentiation centres: at least two small ones on the southern slopes of the southern Carpathians and one in the eastern Carpathian Basin. The considerably weaker differentiation among the Bulgarian samples and their significantly higher genetic diversity imply that gene flow occurred among different regions of Bulgaria during the last ice age. Influence of powder particle size distribution on complex viscosity and other properties of acrylic bone cement for vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty,

Abstract For use in vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty, an acrylic bone cement should possess many characteristics, such as high radiopacity, low and constant viscosity during its application, low value of the maximum temperature reached during the polymerization process (Tmax), a setting time (tset) that is neither too low nor too high, and high compressive strength. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of the powder particle distribution on various properties of one acrylic bone cement; namely, residual monomer content, Tmax, tset, complex viscosity, storage and loss moduli, injectability, and quasi-static compressive strength and modulus. It was found that the formulations that possessed the most suitable complex viscosity-versus-mixing time characteristics are those in which the ratio of the large poly(methyl methacrylate) beads (of mean diameter 118.4 ,m) to the small ones (of mean diameter 69.7 ,m) was at least 90% w/w. Site productivity and plant size explain the response of annual species to grazing exclusion in a Mediterranean semi-arid rangeland

Summary 1The response of an annual plant community to protection from grazing as a function of variation in site productivity was studied in a semi-arid Mediterranean rangeland in Israel over 4 years (1996,99). The abundance of species was compared in grazed vs. ungrazed plots (exclosures) in four neighbouring topographic sites (south- and north-facing slopes, hilltop and Wadi shoulders), representing a gradient of resource availability and productivity. 2Above-ground potential productivity at peak standing crop in spring (i.e. inside exclosures) varied considerably between years and topographic sites. Productivity was similar among the hilltop, south- and north-facing slopes, and was typical of semi-arid ecosystems (10,200 g,2). Productivity in the Wadi was consistently greater (up to 700 g,2) and reached the range of subhumid grassland ecosystems. 3The effect of grazing exclusion on the composition of the annual vegetation was productivity-dependent. Lower similarity (Sorenson's quantitative similarity index) between grazed and ungrazed subplots was observed in the productive Wadi compared with the less productive sites. The small-scale variation in grazing impact on species composition, due to differences in productivity, is consistent with models predicting similar trends in perennial grasslands across larger scale gradients. 4The relationship between plant size (above-ground dry-weight), site productivity and response to fencing was analysed for the 36 most abundant annual species. Large species were more abundant in more productive sites, and small species at lower productivity, although few species were restricted to particular productivity levels. The response of individual species to protection from grazing was productivity dependent, with plant size playing a central role. Larger species tended to increase and small ones to decrease in abundance after fencing, with a mixed response in species with intermediate size. 5A conceptual model is presented relating the response to protection from grazing along gradients of productivity to species plant size. Habitat preferences of European grayling in a medium size stream, the Ain river, France

The three grayling Thymallus thymallus age-classes had strong preferences for their local habitat in the Ain river. All age-classes preferred high water velocities between 70 and 110 cm s -1, confirming that grayling is a typical rheophilic species. An important intraspecific segregation regarding depth occurred, as large individuals preferred deeper water than small ones (optimal ranges=50,60, 80,120 and 100,140 cm for 0+, 1+ and adults respectively). The three age-classes had similar preferences for small substratum articles, with optimal values between 0·5 and 16·0 mm. Preference curves were generally comparable between the two sites, despite important differences in habitat availability. It is emphasized that grayling needs various habitat conditions to achieve its entire life cycle. The increasing scarcity of this species underlines the urgency of protecting lotic habitat integrity and diversity. [source]


Factors influencing food collection behaviour of Brants' whistling rat (Parotomys brantsii): a central place forager

Abstract The hypothesis that Brants' whistling rat Parotomys brantsii is a central place forager, whose foraging decisions are modified by (a) predation risk, (b) time of day, and (c) food choice, was tested. Field observations showed that whistling rats followed central place foraging rules for a single-prey loader and much of their food material was brought back to burrow entrances to feed on, with larger food items being carried back greater distances than small ones. Small food items were consumed in situ more often than large ones, suggesting that predation risk may also play a role in their foraging behaviour. Larger food items were preferentially stored at burrow entrances or carried underground, whilst smaller items tended to be consumed immediately. Individuals foraged more actively in the afternoon than in the morning and, although there was no tendency for individuals to eat more food at this time, far more food was stored or taken underground during the afternoon. Different foraging strategies were used for different plant species with some species preferentially eaten, and others stored or taken below ground more frequently. This study shows that the foraging behaviour of Brants' whistling rats is complex, and whilst they may follow simple central place foraging strategies, other factors such as the time of day and food plant species also influence their foraging behaviour. Specificity of staphylococcal phage and SaPI DNA packaging as revealed by integrase and terminase mutations

Summary SaPI1 and SaPIbov1 are chromosomal pathogenicity islands in Staphylococcus aureus that carry tst and other superantigen genes. They are induced to excise and replicate by certain phages, are efficiently encapsidated in SaPI-specific small particles composed of phage virion proteins and are transferred at very high frequencies. In this study, we have analysed three SaPI genes that are important for the phage,SaPI interaction, int (integrase) terS (phage terminase small subunit homologue) and pif (phage interference function). SaPI1 int is required for SaPI excision, replication and packaging in a donor strain, and is required for integration in a recipient. A SaPI1 int mutant, following phage induction, produces small SaPI-specific capsids which are filled with partial phage genomes. SaPIbov1 DNA is efficiently packaged into full-sized phage heads as well as into SaPI-specific small ones, whereas SaPI1 DNA is found almost exclusively in the small capsids. TerS, however, determines DNA packaging specificity but not the choice of large versus small capsids. This choice is influenced by SaPIbov1 gene 12, which prevents phage DNA packaging into small capsids, and which is also primarily responsible for interference by SaPIbov1 with phage reproduction. Gas Classification of Particles Using a Packed Bed

Abstract Gas classification of particles using a packed bed is, for the first time, proposed and tested for two materials, i.e., glass ballotini and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). A 2,m long column with 9.5,mm diameter is packed with 2,mm spherical particles. The particles to be classified are injected into the inlet of the packed bed by a carrier gas. Measurements of the breakthrough curves of the particles are carried out at the outlet of the packed bed. The results show that the particle elution order is particle size dependent with large particles elutriated faster than small ones. Taking the particle size into account, the retention time of irregular MCC particles is much longer than that of spherical glass beads and the difference is attributed to the particle shape and cohesiveness. Based on the findings, binary mixtures of both, glass and MCC beads are injected into the packed bed for the classification experiments. The results show different dependence on the superficial gas velocity of the particle classification efficiency. The particle classification efficiency of glass particles increases with decreasing superficial gas velocity, whereas that of MCC particles increases with increasing superficial gas velocity. Maximum ingested food size in captive strepsirrhine primates: Scaling and the effects of diet

Abstract Little is known about ingested food size (Vb) in primates, even though this variable has potentially important effects on food intake and processing. This study provides the first data on Vb in strepsirrhine primates using a captive sample of 17 species. These data can be used for generating and testing models of feeding energetics. Strepsirrhines are of interest because they are hypometabolic and chewing rate and daily feeding time do not show a significant scaling relationship with body size. Using melon, carrot, and sweet potato we found that maximum Vb scales isometrically with body mass and mandible length. Low dietary quality in larger strepsirrhines might explain why Vb increases with body size at a greater rate than does resting metabolic rate. Relative to body size, Vb is large in frugivores but small in folivores; furthermore scaling slopes are higher in frugivores than in folivores. A gross estimate of dietary quality explains much of the variation in Vb that is not explained by body size. Gape adaptations might favor habitually large bites for frugivores and small ones for folivores. More data are required for several feeding variables and for wild populations. ENDOGENOUS FORMATION OF COMPETITIVE RESEARCH SHARING JOINT VENTURES,

Research sharing is an important objective of many research joint ventures. When partners share R&D but do not maximize joint profits, large consortia are more profitable than small ones, and joint ventures prefer dispersed rivals. For much of the spillover space, a coalition formation game that permits limited membership predicts that at most, three joint ventures form. Research-sharing joint ventures improve welfare when spillovers are low, and banning research sharing joint ventures is beneficial for high spillovers. With imperfect research sharing and low spillovers, allowing only research sharing is the best industry-wide joint venture alternative for consumer surplus. [source]


Light and Electron Microscopic Study of the Thyroid Gland of the Camel (Camelus dromedarius)

The thyroid gland of sexually immature dromedary camels was studied using both light and electron microscopy. The thyroid gland contained follicles of different sizes in both summer and winter. However, most of the follicles were large in summer and small in winter. The large follicles were lined by very low cuboidal or semi-squamous follicular cells whereas the small ones were lined by high cuboidal or low columnar follicular cells. Electron microscopy showed that the very low cuboidal follicular cells were poor in organelles and were considered hypoactive. High cuboidal follicular cells on the other hand, were rich in organelles that included mitochondria, cisternae of rough endoplasmic reticulum, secretory vesicles, colloid droplets, heterosomes and autophagic vacuoles; they were considered to be very active. The possible role played by these organelles in synthesis of thyroglobulin and liberation of tri- and tetraiodothyronine is discussed. A few degenerate follicular cells were infrequently encountered in the camel thyroid. Parafollicular (C) cells were not seen in this study either with light or electron microscopy. [source]


Estimating the risk of rare complications: is the ,rule of three' good enough?

Abstract The clinical problem:, If a surgeon has performed a particular operation on n consecutive patients without major complications, what is the long-term risk of major complications after performing many more such operations? Examples of such operations are endoscopic cholecystectomy, nephrectomy and sympathectomy. The statistical problem and solutions:, This general problem has exercised the minds of theoretical statisticians for more than 80 years. They agree only that the long-term risk is best expressed as the upper bound of a 95% confidence interval. We consider many proposed solutions, from those that involve complex statistical theory to the empirical ,rule of three', popular among clinicians, in which the percentage risk is given by the formula 100 × (3/n). Our conclusions:, The ,rule of three' grossly underestimates the future risks and can be applied only when the initial complication rate is zero (that is, 0/n). If the initial complication rate is greater than zero, then no simple ,rule' suffices. We give the results of applying the more popular statistical models, including their coverage. The ,exact' Clopper,Pearson interval has wider coverage across all proportions than its nominal 95%, and is, thus, too conservative. The Wilson score confidence interval gives about 95% coverage on average overall population proportions, except very small ones, so we prefer it to the Clopper,Pearson method. Unlike all the other intervals, Bayesian intervals with uniform priors yield exactly 95% coverage at any observed proportion. Thus, we strongly recommend Bayesian intervals and provide free software for executing them. [source]


Formation Laws of Inorganic Gas Pools in the Northern Jiangsu Basin

Abstract, In the Northern Jiangsu basin there are high pure CO2 gas pools, low condensed oil-containing CO2 gas pools, high condensed oil-containing CO2 gas pools and He-containing natural gas pools, with the ,13Cco2 (PDB) values ranging from ,2.87%o to ,6.50%o, 3He/4He 3.71 × 10,6 to 6.42 × 10,6, R/Ra 2.64 to 4.5, 40Ar/36Ar 705 to 734, belonging to typical mantle source inorganic gas pools which are related to young magmatic activity. The gas layers occur in two major reservoir-caprock systems, the terrestrial Meso-Cenozoic clastic rock system and the marine Meso-Palaeozoic carbonate rock-clastic rock system. Controlled by the difference in the scale of traps in the two reservoir-caprock systems, large and medium-scale inorganic gas pools are formed in the marine Meso-Palaeozoic Group and only small ones are formed in the terrestrial Meso-Cenozoic strata. Inorganic gas pools in this basin are distributed along the two deep lithospheric faults on the west and south boundaries of the basin. Gas pools are developed at the intersected part of the ENE-trending faults that control the half graben and the E-W tenso-shear faults, mainly distributed near the Es1, Ny1 and Ny2 -Q basalt eruption centres.
