RESURRECTION OF MESOPLODON TRAVERSII (GRAY, 1874), SENIOR SYNONYM OF M. BAHAMONDI REYES, VAN WAEREBEEK, CÁRDENAS AND YÁÑEZ, 1995 (CETACEA: ZIPHIIDAE)

Abstract Mesoplodon traversii (Gray, 1874) is shown to be a senior synonym of the recently described beaked whale Mesoplodon hahamondi Reyes et al., 1995 on the basis of a phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial DNA control region sequences. The mandible and teeth of M. traversii, first reported in 1873 by Hector as Dolichodon layardii. are redescribed. The species can be distinguished by features of the calvaria; including the large jugal, broad rostrum, and small distance between premaxillary foramina. The male teeth, which are large and spade-shaped with a strong terminal denticle, are also diagnostic. M. traversii is known only from Pitt Island and White Island, New Zealand and Robinson Crusoe Island, Juan Fernandez Archipelago, Chile. [source]


Thin absorbing structure for all incidence angles based on the use of a high-impedance surface

Abstract It is shown that thin mushroom layers (high-impedance surfaces realized as regular arrays of small patches at a small distance from a metal surface) can be used as radar-absorbing structures whose performance does not change with the incidence angle for TM-polarized waves. Self-Assembly of a Chiral Lipid Gelator Controlled by Solvent and Speed of Gelation

Abstract Glutamine derivative 1 with two-photon absorbing units has been synthesized and was found to show gelation ability in some solvents. Its self-assembly in the gel phase could be controlled by the solvent and speed of gelation. For example, in DMSO the organogelator self-assembled into H-aggregates with weak exciton coupling between the aromatic moieties. On the other hand, in DMSO/diphenyl ether (1:9, v/v) the molecules formed 1D aggregates, but with strong exciton coupling due to the small distance between the chromophores. Moreover, the formation of these two kinds of aggregates could be adjusted by the ratio of DMSO to diphenyl ether. In DMSO/toluene, DMSO/butanol, DMSO/butyl acetate, and DMSO/acetic acid systems similar results were observed. Therefore, conversion of the packing model occurs irrespective of the nature of the solvent. Notably, a unique sign inversion in the CD spectra could be realized by controlling the speed of gelation in the DMSO/diphenyl ether (1:9, v/v) system. It was found that a low speed of gelation induces the gelator to adopt a packing model with strong ,,, interactions between the aromatic units. Moreover, the gels, when excited at 800,nm, emit strong green fluorescence and the quantum chemical calculations suggest that intramolecular charge transfer leads to two-photon absorption of the gelator molecule. From age correction to genome-wide association

Objective:, Eric Strömgren was one of the pioneers of psychiatric genetics and family studies. There has now been an explosion of interest in this field and research progress, including linkage and association studies, whole genome genotyping, copy number variants and epigenetics is reviewed here. Method:, An overview of this area of psychiatric research is presented and discussed based on the relevant literature aiming at giving a recent status of the progress. Results:, Broadly speaking linkage and association are complementary approaches used to locate genes contributing to the genetic aetiology of psychopathology. Linkage can be detected over comparatively large distances, however power is problematic when searching for quantitative trait loci with small effect sizes. In contrast, association studies can detect small effects but only over very small distances. Therefore, while several genome-wide linkage studies in psychiatric disorders have been performed, the majority of association studies have investigated specific functional candidate genes. Conclusion:, Due to very recent technological advancements, genome-wide association studies have now become possible and have identified some completely novel susceptibility loci. Other recent advances include the discovery of epigenetic phenomena and copy number variants. [source]


Homogeneity analysis of Turkish meteorological data set

Abstract The missing value interpolation and homogeneity analysis were performed on the meteorological data of Turkey. The data set has the observations of six variables: the maximum air temperature, the minimum air temperature, the mean air temperature, the total precipitation, the relative humidity and the local pressure of 232 stations for the period 1974,2002. The missing values on the monthly data set were estimated using two methods: the linear regression (LR) and the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm. Because of higher correlations between test and reference series, EM algorithm results were preferred. The homogeneity analysis was performed on the annual data using a relative test and four absolute homogeneity tests were used for the stations where non-testable series were found due to the low correlation coefficients between the test and the reference series. A comparison was accomplished by the graphics where relative and absolute tests provided different outcomes. Absolute tests failed to detect the inhomogeneities in the precipitation series at the significance level 1%. Interestingly, most of the inhomogeneities detected on the temperature variables existed in the Aegean region of Turkey. It is considered that theseinhomogeneities were mostly caused by non-natural effects such as relocation. Because of changes at topography at short distance in this region intensify non-random characteristics of the temperature series when relocation occurs even in small distances. The marine effect, which causes artifical cooling effect due to sea breezes has important impact on temperature series and the orograhpy allows this impact go through the inner parts in this region. Rainfall interception in a lower montane forest in Ecuador: effects of canopy properties

Abstract Rainfall interception in forests is influenced by properties of the canopy that tend to vary over small distances. Our objectives were: (i) to determine the variables needed to model the interception loss of the canopy of a lower montane forest in south Ecuador, i.e. the storage capacity of the leaves S and of the trunks and branches St, and the fractions of direct throughfall p and stemflow pt; (ii) to assess the influence of canopy density and epiphyte coverage of trees on the interception of rainfall and subsequent evaporation losses. The study site was located on the eastern slope of the eastern cordillera in the south Ecuadorian Andes at 1900,2000 m above sea level. We monitored incident rainfall, throughfall, and stemflow between April 1998 and April 2001. In 2001, the leaf area index (LAI), inferred from light transmission, and epiphyte coverage was determined. The mean annual incident rainfall at three gauging stations ranged between 2319 and 2561 mm. The mean annual interception loss at five study transects in the forest varied between 591 and 1321 mm, i.e. between 25 and 52% of the incident rainfall. Mean S was estimated at 1·91 mm for relatively dry weeks with a regression model and at 2·46 mm for all weeks with the analytical Gash model; the respective estimates of mean St were 0·04 mm and 0·09 mm, of mean p were 0·42 and 0·63, and of mean pt were 0·003 and 0·012. The LAI ranged from 5·19 to 9·32. Epiphytes, mostly bryophytes, covered up to 80% of the trunk and branch surfaces. The fraction of direct throughfall p and the LAI correlated significantly with interception loss (Pearson's correlation coefficient r = ,0·77 and 0·35 respectively, n = 40). Bryophyte and lichen coverage tended to decrease St and vascular epiphytes tended to increase it, although there was no significant correlation between epiphyte coverage and interception loss. A coupled dispersion and exchange model for short-range dry deposition of atmospheric ammonia

Abstract The MODDAS-2D model (MOdel of Dispersion and Deposition of Ammonia over the Short-range in two dimensions) is presented. This stationary model couples a two-dimensional Lagrangian stochastic model for short-range dispersion, with a leaf-scale bi-directional exchange model for ammonia (NH3), which includes cuticular uptake and a stomatal compensation point. The coupling is obtained by splitting the upward and downward components of the flux, which can be generalized for any trace gas, and hence provides a way of simply incorporating bi-directional exchanges in existing deposition velocity models. The leaf boundary-layer resistance is parametrized to account for mixed convection in the canopy, and the model incorporates a stability correction for the Lagrangian time-scale for vertical velocity, which tends to increase the Lagrangian time-scale in very stable conditions compared with usual parametrizations. The model is validated against three datasets, where concentrations of atmospheric NH3 were measured at several distances from a line source. Two datasets are over grassland and one is over maize, giving a range of canopy structure. The model correctly simulates the concentration in one situation, but consistently overestimates it at further distances or underestimates it at small distances in the two other situations. It is argued that these discrepancies are mainly due to the lack of length of one of the line sources and non-aligned winds. Analysis shows that the surface exchange parameters and the turbulent mixing at the source level are the predominant factors controlling short-range deposition of NH3.
