    Scene Graph and Frame Update Algorithms for Smooth and Scalable 3D Visualization of Simulated Construction Operations

    One of the prime reasons inhibiting the widespread use of discrete-event simulation in construction planning is the absence of appropriate visual communication tools. Visualizing modeled operations in 3D is arguably the best form of communicating the logic and the inner working of simulation models and can be of immense help in establishing the credibility of analyses. New software development technologies emerge at incredible rates that allow engineers and scientists to create novel, domain-specific applications. The authors capitalized on a computer graphics technology based on the concept of the scene graph to design and implement a general-purpose 3D visualization system that is simulation and CAD-software independent. This system, the Dynamic Construction Visualizer, enables realistic visualization of modeled construction operations and the resulting products and can be used in conjunction with a wide variety of simulation tools. This paper describes the scene graph architecture and the frame updating algorithms used in designing the Dynamic Construction Visualizer. [source]


    Origins of a stereotype: categorization of facial attractiveness by 6-month-old infants

    Like adults, young infants prefer attractive to unattractive faces (e.g. Langlois, Roggman, Casey, Ritter, Rieser-Danner & Jenkins, 1987; Slater, von der Schulenburg, Brown, Badenoch, Butterworth, Parsons & Samuels, 1998). Older children and adults stereotype based on facial attractiveness (Eagly, Ashmore, Makhijani & Longo, 1991; Langlois, Kalakanis, Rubenstein, Larson, Hallam & Smooth, 2000). How do preferences for attractive faces develop into stereotypes? Several theories of stereotyping posit that categorization of groups is necessary before positive and negative traits can become linked to the groups (e.g. Tajfel, Billig, Bundy & Flament, 1971; Zebrowitz-McArthur, 1982). We investigated whether or not 6-month-old infants can categorize faces as attractive or unattractive. In Experiment 1, we familiarized infants to unattractive female faces; in Experiment 2, we familiarized infants to attractive female faces and tested both groups of infants on novel faces from the familiar or novel attractiveness category. Results showed that 6-month-olds categorized attractive and unattractive female faces into two different groups of faces. Experiments 3 and 4 confirmed that infants could discriminate among the faces used in Experiments 1 and 2, and therefore categorized the faces based on their similarities in attractiveness rather than because they could not differentiate among the faces. These findings suggest that categorization of facial attractiveness may underlie the development of the ,beauty is good' stereotype. [source]


    Superhydrophobic Mats of Polymer-Derived Ceramic Fibers

    Solid preceramic polyaluminasilazane was synthesized through the reaction between liquid cyclosilazane and aluminum tri-sec-butoxide at 160°C. Electrospinning of polyaluminasilazane/polyethyleneoxide (1/0.0001 mass ratio) in chloroform solutions generated smooth fibers while the electrospun fibers from the chloroform/N,N -dimethylformamide solutions had submicrometer structures on the fiber surfaces. Smooth and rough SiCNO ceramic fibers were obtained by the pyrolysis of the green fibers with an 80% yield. Superhydrophobic mats of ceramic fibers were fabricated via a chemical vapor deposition of perfluorosilane onto the rough fibers. These superhydrophobic mats possess good chemical and thermal stability. [source]


    Crosslinked Polyacrolein Microspheres with High Loading of Aldehyde Groups for Use as Scavenger Resins in Organic Synthesis,

    Abstract Summary: Suspension polymerization yielded microspheres (40,50 ,m) of polyacrolein. Smooth and rugged surfaces can be created by varying the polymerization procedure. We have shown that the polyacrolein resins with a high loading of aldehyde groups serve as effective scavengers for primary amines and may be used to remove compounds bearing amino groups in the combinatorial synthesis of compound libraries. Copolymerization with styrene can help to separate the adjacent aldehyde groups, thus making the functional groups more available in organic reactions. The polyacrolein resins in the aldehyde form or after appropriate chemical modifications may also be useful as support materials in solid-phase synthesis.     Smooth, undisturbed dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the Perseus cluster core: Implications for dark matter content

    Abstract Using deep HST/ACS observations of the core of the Perseus Cluster, we identify a large population of dwarf elliptical galaxies down to MV = ,12. All these dwarfs are remarkably smooth in appearance, showing no evidence for internal features that could be the result of tidal processes or star formation induced by the cluster potential. Based on these observations and the relatively large sizes of these dwarfs, we argue that at least some must have a large dark matter component to prevent their disruption by the cluster potential. We further derive a new method to quantify the dark matter content of cluster dSphs without the use of kinematics, which are impossible to obtain at these distances. We find that mass-to-light ratios for dwarfs in the core of the Perseus Cluster are comparable to those found for Local Group dSphs, ranging between M,/L, , 1 and 120. This is evidence that dwarf spheroidals reside in dark matter subhalos that protect them from tidal processes in the cores of dense clusters (© 2009 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.     Fabrication and Characteristics of Carbon Nanofiber-Reinforced Carbon/Carbon Composites by Fast Catalytic Infiltration Processes,

    Abstract The simultaneous in-situ growth of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and densification of a CNFs/CF hybrid multiscale felt are accomplished in a single step by thermal gradient chemical vapor infiltration using Fe as the catalyst and vaporized kerosene under atmospheric pressure. A three-dimensional CNF network which could bridge dissimilar components of composites is formed on carbon fibers (CFs). The length of CNFs can reach several micrometers and the diameters are about 80,nm. Smooth and rough surface densified CNFs can be produced after further higher temperature infiltration. CNFs, anchoring to CFs by the adherence of the catalyst nanoparticles, enhance the bonding between CFs and pyrocarbon as well as promoting the formation of a rough laminar pyrocarbon matrix. The deposition mechanisms and physical model are also discussed. This fast catalytic infiltration process can be applied to other ceramic materials and has significant enlargement potential.     A hybrid approach for simulating human motion in constrained environments

    Abstract We present a new algorithm to generate plausible motions for high-DOF human-like articulated figures in constrained environments with multiple obstacles. Our approach is general and makes no assumptions about the articulated model or the environment. The algorithm combines hierarchical model decomposition with sample-based planning to efficiently compute a collision-free path in tight spaces. Furthermore, we use path perturbation and replanning techniques to satisfy the kinematic and dynamic constraints on the motion. In order to generate realistic human-like motion, we present a new motion blending algorithm that refines the path computed by the planner with motion capture data to compute a smooth and plausible trajectory. We demonstrate the results of generating motion corresponding to placing or lifting object, walking, and bending for a 38-DOF articulated model. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source]


    Algorithm for Accurate Three-Dimensional Scene Graph Updates in High-Speed Animations of Previously Simulated Construction Operations

    Early efforts resulted in a scene graph and frame update algorithm that was capable of converting discrete information from simulation models into smooth and continuous 3D animations. That algorithm did not account for high speed or concurrent animation because the need to do so was not anticipated. Recent advances in computing power and an interest in using the technology for next generation applications now demand accurate high speed and concurrent animations. This article presents the design of the original algorithm at a previously undocumented level of detail and specificity, and that allows for the analysis of its shortcomings when used at high speeds or concurrently with simulation. Two subsequent but still inadequate designs of the algorithm are also presented and analyzed in detail so that they can serve as an illustration of the path toward the final design and place it in proper context. The article concludes with the final design and evaluation of the algorithm, which is accurate at very high animation speeds and supports concurrent animation of simulation models. [source]


    Preliminary Highway Design with Genetic Algorithms and Geographic Information Systems

    A method that integrates geographic information systems (GIS) with genetic algorithms (GAs) for optimizing horizontal highway alignments between two given end points is presented in this article. The proposed approach can be used to optimize alignments in highly irregular geographic spaces. The resulting alignments are smooth and satisfy minimum-radius constraints, as required by highway design standards. The objective function in the proposed model considers land-acquisition cost, environmental impacts such as wetlands and flood plains, length-dependent costs (which are proportional to the alignment length), and user costs. A numerical example based on a real map is employed to demonstrate application of the proposed model to the preliminary design of horizontal alignments. [source]


    Homoepitaxy of ZnTe on (100) oriented substrates: Technology issues and MOVPE growth aspects

    Abstract The metalorganic vapour phase epitaxy of ZnTe on single crystal (100)ZnTe:P wafers is reported. The technological steps to prepare a substrate surface suitable for the high quality homoepitaxy of ZnTe are identified and optimised in terms of structural and morphological properties of overgrown epilayers. Removal of ,7 µm of material from the ZnTe:P wafers by chemical etching in 1% Br2 -methanol solution proved necessary to achieve a sufficiently smooth and homogeneous surface; in-situ H2 heat treatment of the wafers at 350°C immediately before growth ensures optimal desorption of residual oxides, allowing epilayer crystalline quality comparable to the substrate. However, the structure of epilayers degrades for growth temperatures (TG) above 350 °C due to the occurrence of stacking faults (SFs) within ,200-300 nm from the epilayer-substrate interface. Accordingly, the epilayer band-edge luminescence vanishes below 350 nm, indicating a worsening of the material radiative efficiency in very thin epilayers. The epilayer surface morphology is the result of a complex interplay between SF nucleation and Te:Zn ad-atom stoichiometry during growth. Almost featureless morphologies are obtained for growth at 350 °C, i.e. under nearly stoichiometric surface conditions. Pyramid-like hillocks develop instead for TG , 360 °C, corresponding to Te-rich surface conditions, their density rapidly increasing up to around 9 × 106 cm,2 at TG = 400 °C. Hillocks occur in close pairs on the epilayer surface, their nucleation being strongly reduced if a thin ZnTe buffer layer is grown at low (325 °C) temperature, i.e. if SFs do not occur at the epilayer-substrate interface. This demonstrates that hillocks form as a result of three-dimensional growth around partial dislocations pairs bounding SFs, the phenomenon being driven by Te ad-atoms experiencing a Schwoebel potential barrier at the surface step edges around the dislocations.     Preparation and characterization of powders and crystals of Vn-xTixO2n-1 Magneli oxides

    Abstract Vn-xTixO2n-1 Magnéli phases have been synthesized under vacuum in powder form (n = 4, 0 , x , 0.4) and crystals (n = 4 and 5, x = 0.5 and 1.4, respectively), grown by chemical vapour transport in closed ampoules. TeCl4 and NH4Cl were used as transporting agents. Needle-shaped crystals as long as 200-300 micrometers or 2-3 mm were obtained when in presence of NH4Cl or TeCl4, respectively. The powder and crystal structures were examined by X-ray diffraction and the transport and magnetic characteristics were measured.. The powders resulted to be single-phase and the relevant composition was assumed to be equal to the nominal one. The overall stoichiometry of compounds, n, was determined from single crystal X-ray diffraction data. The Ti content, x, was deduced from the elementary cell volume, by applying the Végard law. Crystals were mainly untwinned and of good quality. The elementary cell of both, powders and crystals, was triclinic (P-1) and did not change with doping. DC electrical resistivity of the crystals was measured in a four-points (van der Pauw) configuration. DC magnetic susceptibility of the powders was measured in a SQUID magnetometer. The Ti doping was found to progressively smooth and finally to suppress the magnetic transitions occurring in the V4O7. The metal-insulator transitions observed in V4O7 and V5O9, at around 235 and 125 K respectively, were not observed in the doped crystals, thus indicating some significant change of the electronic structure of the V oxides.     Simulated microgravity activates MAPK pathways in fibroblasts cultured on microgrooved surface topography

    Abstract This study evaluated in vitro the differences in morphological behaviour between fibroblast cultured on smooth and microgrooved substrata (groove depth: 0.5 ,m, width: 1 ,m), which were subjected to simulated microgravity. The aim of the study was to clarify which of these parameters was more dominant to determine cell behaviour. Morphological characteristics were investigated using scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence microscopy in order to obtain qualitative information on cell alignment. Expression of collagen type I, and ,1-, ,1-, ,3-integrin were investigated by QPCR. Finally, immunoblotting was applied to visualise MAPK signalling pathways. Microscopy and image analysis showed that the fibroblasts aligned along the groove direction on all textured surfaces. On the smooth substrata, cells had spread out in a random fashion. The alignment of cells cultured on grooved surfaces under simulated microgravity, after 48 h of culturing appeared similar to those cultured at 1g, although cell shape was different. Analysis of variance proved that all main parameters: topography, gravity force, and time were significant. In addition, gene levels were reduced by simulated microgravity particularly those of ,3-integrin and collagen, however alpha-1 and beta-1 integrin levels were up-regulated. ERK1/2 was reduced in RPM, however, JNK/SAPK and p38 remained active. The members of the small GTPases family were stimulated under microgravity, particularly RhoA and Cdc42. The results are in agreement that application of microgravity to fibroblasts promotes a change in their morphological appearance and their expression of cell-substratum proteins through the MAPK intracellular signalling pathways. The alignment of cells cultured on grooved surfaces decreased under simulated microgravity, especially after 24 h of culturing. Cell surface area on grooved substrata were significantly smaller than on smooth substrata, but simulated microgravity on the grooved groups resulted in an enlargement of cell area. ANOVA was performed on all main parameters: topography, gravity force, and time. In this analysis, all parameters proved significant. In addition, gene levels were reduced by microgravity particularly those of ,1-integrin and fibronectin. From our data it is concluded that the fibroblasts primarily adjust their shape according to morphological environmental cues like substratum surface whilst a secondary, but significant, role is played by microgravity conditions. The aim of the study was to clarify which of these parameters was more important to determine cell behaviour. Morphological characteristics were investigated using scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence microscopy in order to obtain qualitative information on cell spreading and alignment. Confocal laser scanning microscopy visualised distribution of actin filaments and vinculin anchoring points through immunostaining. Finally, expression of collagen type I, fibronectin, and ,1 - and ,1 -integrin were investigated by PCR. Microscopy and image analysis showed that the fibroblasts aligned along the groove direction on all textured surfaces. On the smooth substrata (control), cells spread out in a random fashion. The alignment of cells cultured on grooved surfaces increased with higher g-forces until a peak value at 25 g. An ANOVA was performed on the data, for all main parameters: topography, gravity force, and time. In this analysis, all parameters proved significant. In addition, most gene levels were reduced by hypergravity. Still, collagen type 1 and fibronectin are seemingly unaffected by time or force. From our data it is concluded that the fibroblasts primarily adjust their shape according to morphological environmental cues like substratum surface whilst a secondary, but significant, role is played by hypergravity forces.     Chicken gizzard filamin, retina filamin and cgABP260 are respectively, smooth muscle-, non-muscle- and pan-muscle-type isoforms: Distribution and localization in muscles

    Abstract We determined the full cDNA sequences of chicken gizzard filamin and cgABP260 (chicken gizzard actin-binding protein 260). The primary and secondary structures predicted by these sequences were similar to those of chicken retina filamin and human filamins. Like mammals, chickens have 3 filamin isoforms. Comparison of their amino acid sequences indicated that gizzard filamin, retina filamin, and cgABP260 were the counterparts of human FLNa (filamin a), b, and c, respectively. Antibodies against the actin-binding domain (ABD) of these 3 filamin isoforms were raised in rabbits. Using immunoabsorption and affinity chromatography, we prepared the monospecific antibody against the ABD of each filamin. In immunoblotting, the antibody against the gizzard filamin ABD detected a single band in gizzard, but not in striated muscles or brain. In brain, only the antibody against the retina filamin ABD produced a strong single band. The antibody against the cgABP260 ABD detected a single peptide band in smooth, skeletal, and cardiac muscle. In immunofluorescence microscopy of muscular tissues using these antibodies, the antibody against the gizzard filamin ABD only stained smooth muscle cells, and the antibody against the retina filamin ABD strongly stained endothelial cells of blood vessels and weakly stained cells in connective tissue. The antibody against the cgABP260 ABD stained the Z-lines and myotendinous junctions of breast muscle, the Z-lines and intercalated disks of cardiac muscle, and dense plaques of smooth muscle. These findings indicate that chicken gizzard filamin, retina filamin, and cgABP260 are, respectively, smooth muscle-type, non-muscle-type, and pan-muscle-type filamin isoforms. Cell Motil.     Double Butterfly Suture for High Tension: A Broadly Anchored, Horizontal, Buried Interrupted Suture

    Background. The excision of skin lesions such as tumors, nevi, and scars frequently results in tension on surgical wound margins. This tension is commonly counteracted surgically with buried, intracutaneous, interrupted sutures of absorbable material which are anchored vertically in the corium. Method. The horizontal, buried, intracutaneous butterfly suture has been described elsewhere. It is firmly anchored in the corium, everts wound margins, and adapts them nearly as broadly as two vertical sutures. It can also be laid as a double butterfly suture, as described here, and then has the shape of an "8." This double butterfly suture is equivalent to three vertical sutures because of its broad base in the corium. Moreover, it can cope with much greater tension because of its "pulley" effect. A single double butterfly suture usually suffices for small defects, particularly when the wound edges are cut obliquely with a longer rim of epidermis. Materials. We have laid the traditional butterfly suture in more than 35,000 skin lesion excisions since 1985 and the double butterfly suture alone or as a supplement in more than 10,000 sutures since 1992. We use 2-0 to 6-0 polydioxanone for these procedures, since it has proven in trials to be the best-absorbed suture material. Results. In most cases, the resulting scars were narrow and smooth in spite of high tension. Results were unsatisfactory in only 6.2% of procedures. Conclusion. The double butterfly suture described here has the advantages of withstanding tension better while everting wound margins and requiring fewer stitches for wound closure. However, it is important that the suture knot be deeply anchored beneath the corium. [source]


    Ultrastructural analysis of the smooth-to-striated transition zone in the developing mouse esophagus: Emphasis on apoptosis of smooth and origin and differentiation of striated muscle cells

    Abstract The exact mechanism of smooth-to-striated muscle conversion in the mouse esophagus is controversial. Smooth-to-striated muscle cell transdifferentiation vs. distinct differentiation pathways for both muscle types were proposed. Main arguments for transdifferentiation were the failure to detect apoptotic smooth and the unknown origin of striated muscle cells during esophageal myogenesis. To reinvestigate this issue, we analyzed esophagi of 4-day-old mice by electron microscopy and a fine-grained sampling strategy considering that, in perinatal esophagus, the replacement of smooth by striated muscle progresses craniocaudally, while striated myogenesis advances caudocranially. We found numerous (1) apoptotic smooth muscle cells located mainly in a transition zone, where smooth intermingled with developing striated muscle cells, and (2) mesenchymal cells in the smooth muscle portion below the transition zone, which appeared to give rise to striated muscle fibers. Taken together, these results provide further evidence for distinct differentiation pathways of both muscle types during esophagus development.     Histology, histochemistry and morphometry of the ovary of the adult plains viscacha (Lagostomus maximus) in different reproductive stages

    Abstract Lagostomus maximus is a South American Hystricognathi rodent whose reproductive behaviour shows characteristics unusual for mammals, such as polyovulation (200,800 oocytes) and a high rate of embryo mortality. Thirty-six mature females captured in the province of Buenos Aires showed different physiological reproductive stages. Most of them presented a postpartum oestrus in August,September. This characteristic is different from that reported in other geographical areas. The stages considered were: anoestrus, follicular phase, early pregnancy and late pregnancy. The ovaries were light-pink and smooth and presented a tortuous cord-like aspect. Many primordial follicles were found in all the females studied. Follicles in different states of maturation and primary and accessory corpora lutea were observed in the cortex. These structures were smaller than those present in other related species. Follicles did not project into the surface of the organ. Calcified follicles of diverse size were found in all the ovaries. Atretic follicles were found in all the stages analysed. Interstitial tissue surrounding the follicles and the corpora lutea was also observed. The number and proportion of different cortical structures varied in the physiological stages analysed. The ovaries of the viscacha have differential characteristics in comparison to other Hystricognathi, some of them related to polyovulation. [source]


    Surface morphology of eggs of Euproctis chrysorrhoea (Linnaeus, 1758)

Filaments covering the egg batches and chorion structure were studied both by light and scanning electron microscopy in the brown-tailed moth Euproctis chrysorrhoea (Linnaeus, 1758). Females lay eggs in masses on the underside of apple leaves. The egg batches are covered with brown hairs derived from the bodies of the female. Each female lays about 200,400 eggs. The spherical eggs are about 0.84 mm long and 0.47 mm wide. Newly deposited eggs are golden-yellow and darken after the onset of embryonic development. The micropylar area appears somewhat depressed and has a circular outline. The region is surrounded by a rosette of 10,12 petal-shaped primary cells, which are completely surrounded by a series of secondary and tertiary cells. The remainder of the egg is largely smooth, but shows aeropyles. These are located in the corners of ill-defined polygons. [source]


    The micro-topography of the wetlands of the Okavango Delta, Botswana

    Abstract The surface of the 40 000 km2 Okavango alluvial fan is remarkably smooth, and almost everywhere lies within two to three metres of a perfectly smooth theoretical surface. Deviations from this perfect surface give rise to islands in the Okavango wetlands. This micro-topography was mapped by assigning empirical elevations to remotely sensed vegetation community classes, based on the observation that vegetation is very sensitive to small, local differences in elevation. Even though empirical, the method produces fairly accurate results. The technique allows estimation of depths of inundation and therefore will be applicable even when high resolution radar altimetry becomes available. The micro-topography has arisen as a result of clastic sedimentation in distributary channels, which produces local relief of less than two metres, and more importantly as a result of chemical precipitation in island soils, which produces similar local relief. The micro-topography is, therefore, an expression of the non-random sedimentation taking place on the fan. Volume calculations of islands extracted from the micro-topography, combined with estimates of current sediment in,ux, suggest that the land surface of the wetland may only be a few tens of thousands of years old. Constant switching of water distribution, driven by local aggradation, has distributed sediment widely. Mass balance calculations suggest that over a period of c. 150 000 years all of the fan would at one time or other have been inundated, and thus subject to sedimentation. Coalescing of islands over time results in net aggradation of the fan surface. The amount of vertical aggradation on islands and in channels is restricted by the water depth. Restricted vertical relief, in turn, maximizes the distribution of water, limiting its average depth. Aggradation in the permanent swamps occurs predominantly by clastic sedimentation. Rates of aggradation here are very similar to those in the seasonal swamps, maintaining the overall gradient, possibly because of the operation of a feedback loop between the two. The limited amount of local aggradation arising from both clastic and chemical sedimentation, combined with constant changes in water distribution, has resulted in a near-perfect conical surface over the fan.     Macro-scale bed roughness of the siple coast ice streams in West Antarctica

    Abstract Subglacial bed conditions are key to understanding ice stream behaviour and evolution, with bed roughness re,ecting substrate composition and ,ow resistance. Here we present an analysis of bed roughness in the Siple Coast region of West Antarctica from airborne radio-echo sounding data. The ice streams are associated generally with low bed roughness values, which decrease downstream. The bed of the slow-,owing Ice Stream C (,10 000 km2) is also characterized by being smooth at all scales (wavelengths ranging from 5 km to in excess of 40 km). Furthermore, the bed is smooth either side of Ice Stream C. This suggests the location of the ice stream is controlled by internal ice sheet dynamics rather than by bed morphology. If the ice stream were encouraged to migrate laterally, when active, there would be little resistance offered by the subglacial morphology. Other inter-ice stream regions are rough, however, indicating a subglacial topographic in,uence on ice stream position. Bed roughness increases up-,ow of ice streams, which, unless the bed is modi,ed, may limit the inland migration of these systems. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source]


    A Parsimonious Macroeconomic Model for Asset Pricing

    I study asset prices in a two-agent macroeconomic model with two key features: limited stock market participation and heterogeneity in the elasticity of intertemporal substitution in consumption (EIS). The model is consistent with some prominent features of asset prices, such as a high equity premium, relatively smooth interest rates, procyclical stock prices, and countercyclical variation in the equity premium, its volatility, and in the Sharpe ratio. In this model, the risk-free asset market plays a central role by allowing non-stockholders (with low EIS) to smooth the fluctuations in their labor income. This process concentrates non-stockholders' labor income risk among a small group of stockholders, who then demand a high premium for bearing the aggregate equity risk. Furthermore, this mechanism is consistent with the very small share of aggregate wealth held by non-stockholders in the U.S. data, which has proved problematic for previous models with limited participation. I show that this large wealth inequality is also important for the model's ability to generate a countercyclical equity premium. When it comes to business cycle performance, the model's progress has been more limited: consumption is still too volatile compared to the data, whereas investment is still too smooth. These are important areas for potential improvement in this framework. [source]


    UK Household Debt: A Threat to Growth or Stability?

    The liberalisation of credit constraints in the 1970s for UK consumers has had important implications for the housing market and consumer spending. This paper by John Muellbauer1 examines the factors that have driven soaring consumer debt and house price levels; in particular those observed since the mid-1990s. By relying on recent econometric evidence and trends in credit availability, real income per head, nominal and real after tax mortgage rates, measures of perceived risk and broad demographic trends, it also analyses the prospects for house prices, mortgage debt and unsecured debt over the coming years. The outlook is for a ,soft landing' in the housing market and associated declines in the rate of growth of consumer debt, which, although probably not smooth, does suggest the underlying situation is more benign and less crisis-prone than it was in 1988,89.     Performance of Impedimetric Biosensors Based on Anodically Formed Ti/TiO2 Electrodes

    Abstract The advantages and limitations of impedimetric sensors based on Ti/TiO2 architectures are described. Titanium dioxide (titania) was potentiostatically formed onto titanium electrodes of 2,mm diameter, at 10 and 30,V in 1,M H2SO4. The thickness of the titania layers was ellipsometrically determined to be 30 and 86,nm respectively and they are highly insulating with charge-transfer resistances in the M, range, as they were measured with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy under specific experimental conditions. Low voltage anodization (<10,V) results to amorphous TiO2, whereas at higher applied voltages (>25,V), anatase is the predominant form. SEM images are indicative of quite smooth, compact coatings without any severe cracks. [source]


    A statistical model for unwarping of 1-D electrophoresis gels

    Abstract A statistical model is proposed which relates density profiles in 1-D electrophoresis gels, such as those produced by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), to databases of profiles of known genotypes. The warp in each gel lane is described by a trend that is linear in its parameters plus a first-order autoregressive process, and density differences are modelled by a mixture of two normal distributions. Maximum likelihood estimates are computed efficiently by a recursive algorithm that alternates between dynamic time warping to align individual lanes and generalised-least-squares regression to ensure that the warp is smooth between lanes. The method, illustrated using PFGE of Escherichia coli O157 strains, automatically unwarps and classifies gel lanes, and facilitates manual identification of new genotypes. [source]


    Biology of Bactrocera (Zeugodacus) tau (Walker) (Diptera: Tephritidae)

    Abstract The biology of the fruit fly Bactrocera tau, an important horticultural pest, was studied under laboratory conditions at 25°C and 60,70% relative humidity on Cucurbita maxima. The duration of mating averaged 408.03 ± 235.93 min. After mating, the female fly had a preoviposition period of 11.7 ± 4.49 days. The oviposition rate was 9.9 ± 8.50 eggs and fecundity was 464.6 ± 67.98 eggs/female. Eggs were elliptical, smooth and shiny white, turning darker as hatching approached, and measured 1.30 ± 0.07 mm × 0.24 ± 0.04 mm. The chorion has polygonal microsculpturing and is species-specific with polygonal walls. The egg period lasts for 1.3 ± 0.41 days. The duration of the larval period is 1.2 ± 0.42, 1.7 ± 0.48 and 4.0 ± 0.94 days for first, second and third instars, respectively. Pupation occurs in the sand or soil and pupal periods are 7.0 ± 0.47 days. The life cycle from egg to adult was completed in 14.2 ± 1.69 days; the longevity of mated females and males was 130.33 ± 14.18 and 104.66 ± 31.21 days, respectively. At least two to three generations were observed from June 2008 to June 2009. [source]


    Semiparametric M -quantile regression for estimating the proportion of acidic lakes in 8-digit HUCs of the Northeastern US

    Abstract Between 1991 and 1995, the Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program of the US Environmental Protection Agency conducted a survey of lakes in the Northeastern states of the US to determine the ecological condition of these waters. Here, to this end, we want to obtain estimates of the proportion of lakes at (high) risk of acidification or acidified already for each 8-digit hydrologic unit code (HUC) within the region of interest. Sample sizes for the 113 HUCs are very small and 27 HUCs are not even observed. Therefore, small area estimation techniques should be invoked for the estimation of the distribution function of acid neutralizing capacity (ANC) for each HUC. The procedure is based on a semiparametric M -quantile regression model in which ANC depends on elevation and the year of the survey linearly, and on the geographical position of the lake through an unknown smooth bivariate function estimated by low-rank thin plate splines.     An image warping approach to spatio-temporal modelling

    Abstract In this article we present a spatio-temporal dynamic model that can be realized using image warping. Image warping is a non-linear deformation which maps every point in one image plane to a point in another image plane. Using thin-plate splines, these deformations are defined by how a small set of points is mapped, making the method computationally tractable. In our case the dynamics of the process is modelled by thin-plate spline deformations and how they vary in time. Thus we make no assumption of stationarity in time. Finding the deformation between two images in the space,time series is a trade-off between a good match of the images and a smooth, physically plausible, deformation. This is formulated as a penalized likelihood problem, where the likelihood measures how good the match is and the penalty comes from a prior model on the deformation. The dynamic model we suggest can be used to make forecasts and also to estimate the uncertainties associated with these. An introduction to image warping and thin-plate splines is given as well as an application where the methodology is applied to the problem of nowcasting radar precipitation.     A Density Functional Study of the Hydrogenation of Ketones Catalysed by Neutral Rhodium-Diphosphane Complexes

    Abstract The potential energy profile of RhI -catalysed hydrogenation of ketones has been computed for the simple model system [Rh{H3POCH2CH2N(H)PH3}(Cl)] using DFT calculations. The general sequence of the catalytic cycle involves coordination of the carbonyl derivative to the neutral RhI complex followed by oxidative addition of molecular hydrogen providing rhodium dihydride intermediates. The latter are converted into alkoxy hydrides by a migratory insertion reaction. Reductive elimination of the alcohol and substitution of the latter by the incoming substrate completes the catalyticcycle. Intermediates and transition states of all catalyticsteps have been located. Two isomeric derivatives bearingthe model substrate have been found for the [Rh{H3POCH2CH2N(H)PH3}(Cl)(H2CO)] complex. Eight diastereomeric pathways have been followed for the cis addition of molecular hydrogen to [Rh{H3POCH2CH2N(H)PH3}(Cl)(H2CO)] leading to eight distinct isomeric dihydride intermediates. Four dihydride complexes can be considered as the more accessible compounds. The site preference for migratory insertion and transition states discriminates the main path of the catalytic reaction. Migratory insertion to form the alkoxy hydride constitute the turn over limiting step of the process. The potential energy profile has been found to be smooth without excessive activation barriers.
