A record of Late Pleistocene and Holocene carbon accumulation and climate change from an equatorial peat bog (Kalimantan, Indonesia): implications for past, present and future carbon dynamics

Abstract A 9.5,m core from an inland peatland in Kalimantan, Indonesia, reveals organic matter accumulation started around 26,000,cal.,yr,BP, providing the oldest reported initiation date for lowland ombrotrophic peat formation in SE Asia. The core shows clear evidence for differential rates of peat formation and carbon storage. A short period of initial accumulation is followed by a slow rate during the LGM, with fastest accumulation during the Holocene. Between ,13,000 and 8000,cal.,yr,BP, >,450,cm of peat were deposited, with highest rates of peat (>,2,mm,yr,1) and carbon (>,90,g,C,m,2,yr,1) accumulation between 9530 and 8590,cal.,yr,BP. These data suggest that Kalimantan peatlands acted as a large sink of atmospheric CO2 at this time. Slower rates of peat (0.15,0.38,mm,yr,1) and carbon (7.4,24.0,g,C,m,2,yr,1) accumulation between ,8000 and 500,cal.,yr,BP coincide with rapid peat formation in coastal locations elsewhere in SE Asia. The average LORCA (long-term apparent carbon accumulation rate) for the 9.5,m core is 56,g,C,m,2,yr,1. These data suggest that studies of global carbon sources, sinks and their dynamics need to include information on the past and present sizeable peat deposits of the tropics. Impaired oxygen kinetics in beta-thalassaemia major patients

Abstract Aim:, Beta-thalassaemia major (TM) affects oxygen flow and utilization and reduces patients' exercise capacity. The aim of this study was to assess phase I and phase II oxygen kinetics during submaximal exercise test in thalassaemics and make possible considerations about the pathophysiology of the energy-producing mechanisms and their expected exercise limitation. Methods:, Twelve TM patients with no clinical evidence of cardiac or respiratory disease and 10 healthy subjects performed incremental, symptom-limited cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) and submaximal, constant workload CPET. Oxygen uptake (Vo2), carbon dioxide output and ventilation were measured breath-by-breath. Results:, Peak Vo2 was reduced in TM patients (22.3 ± 7.4 vs. 28.8 ± 4.8 mL kg,1 min,1, P < 0.05) as was anaerobic threshold (13.1 ± 2.7 vs. 17.4 ± 2.6 mL kg,1 min,1, P = 0.002). There was no difference in oxygen cost of work at peak exercise (11.7 ± 1.9 vs. 12.6 ± 1.9 mL min,1 W,1 for patients and controls respectively, P = ns). Phase I duration was similar in TM patients and controls (24.6 ± 7.3 vs. 23.3 ± 6.6 s respectively, P = ns) whereas phase II time constant in patients was significantly prolonged (42.8 ± 12.0 vs. 32.0 ± 9.8 s, P < 0.05). Conclusion:, TM patients present prolonged phase II on-transient oxygen kinetics during submaximal, constant workload exercise, compared with healthy controls, possibly suggesting a slower rate of high energy phosphate production and utilization and reduced oxidative capacity of myocytes; the latter could also account for their significantly limited exercise tolerance. THE CRIME-CONTROL EFFECT OF INCARCERATION: DOES SCALE MATTER?,

Research Summary: Several prominent empirical studies estimate models of a constant proportional effect of prison on crime, finding that effect is substantial and negative. A separate literature argues against the crime-reducing effect of prison but mainly on theoretical grounds. This second literature suggests that the elasticity of the prison/crime relationship is not constant. We provide a model that nests these two literatures. Using data from the United States over 30 years, we find strong evidence that the negative relationship between prison and crime becomes less strongly negative as the scale of imprisonment increases. This revisionist model indicates that (1) at low levels of incarceration, a constant elasticity model underestimates the negative relationship between incarceration and crime, and (2) at higher levels of incarceration, the constant elasticity model overstates the negative effect. Policy Implications: These results go beyond the claim of declining marginal returns, instead finding accelerating declining marginal returns. As the prison population continues to increase, albeit at a slower rate, after three decades of phenomenal growth, these findings provide an important caution that for many jurisdictions, the point of accelerating declining marginal returns may have set in. Any policy discussion of the appropriate scale of punishment should be concerned with the empirical impact of this expensive and intrusive government intervention. [source]


Controlling factors of gullying in the Maracujá Catchment, southeastern Brazil

Abstract Hundreds of gullies (,voçorocas') of huge dimensions (up to 400,500 m long, 150 m wide and 50 m deep) are very common in the small Maracujá Catchment in southeastern Brazil. These erosional features, which occur with an uneven intensity throughout the area, started due to bad soil management practices at the beginning of European settlement, at the end of the 17th century, and nowadays are still evolving, but at a slower rate. As surface soils are usually very resistant to erosion, the outcrop of the more erodible basement saprolites seems to be an essential condition for their beginning. An analysis of well known erosion controlling factors was performed, aiming to explain the beginning and evolution of these gullies and to understand the reasons for their spatial distribution. Data shows that geology and, mainly, geomorphology are the main controlling factors, since gullies tend to be concentrated in basement rock areas with lower relief (domain 2) of Maracujá Catchment, mainly at the fringes of broad and flat interfluves. At the detailed scale (1:10 000), gullies are more common in amphitheatre-like headwater hollows that frequently represent upper Quaternary gullies (paleogullies), which demonstrate the recurrence of channel erosion. So, gullies occur in areas of thicker saprolites (domain 2), in places with a natural concentration of surface and underground water (hollows). Saprolites of the preserved, non-eroded hollows are usually pressurized (confined aquifer) due to a thick seal of Quaternary clay layer, in a similar configuration to the ones found in hollows of mass movement (mudflow) sites in southeastern Brazil. Therefore, the erosion of the resistant soils by human activities, such as road cuts and trenches (,valos'), or their mobilization by mudflow movements, seem to be likely mechanisms of gullying initiation. Numerical evaluation of the damping-solvent extraction method in the frequency domain

Abstract The damping-solvent extraction method for the analysis of unbounded visco-elastic media is evaluated numerically in the frequency domain in order to investigate the influence of the computational parameters,domain size, amount of artificial damping, and mesh density,on the accuracy of results. An analytical estimate of this influence is presented, and specific questions regarding the influence of the parameters on the results are answered using the analytical estimate and numerical results for two classical problems: the rigid strip and rigid disc footings on a visco-elastic half-space with constant hysteretic material damping. As the domain size is increased, the results become more accurate only at lower frequencies, but are essentially unaffected at higher frequencies. Choosing the domain size to ensure that the static stiffness is computed accurately leads to an unnecessarily large domain for analysis at higher frequencies. The results improve by increasing artificial damping but at a slower rate as the total (material plus artificial) damping ratio ,t gets closer to 0.866. However, the results do not deteriorate significantly for the larger amounts of artificial damping, suggesting that ,t,0.6 is appropriate; a larger value is not likely to influence the accuracy of results. Presented results do not support the earlier suggestion that similar accuracy can be achieved by a large bounded domain with small damping or by a small domain with larger damping. Long-term succession in a Danish temperate deciduous forest

Forest successional trajectories covering the last 2000 yr from a mixed deciduous forest in Denmark show a gradual shift in dominance from Tilia cordata to Fagus sylvatica and a recent increase in total forest basal area since direct management ceased in 1948. The successions are reconstructed by combining a fifty-year record of direct tree observations with local pollen diagrams from Draved Forest, Denmark. Five of the seven successions record a heathland phase of Viking Age dating from 830 AD. The anthropogenic influence is considerable throughout the period of study even though Draved contains some of the most pristine forest stands in Denmark. Anthropogenic influence including felling masks the underlying natural dynamics, with the least disturbed sites showing the smallest compositional change. Some effects of former management, such as loss of Tilia cordata dominance, are irreversible. Artificial disturbance, particularly drainage, has accelerated and amplified the shift towards Fagus dominance that would have occurred on a smaller scale and at a slower rate in the absence of human intervention. Organochlorine pesticides and mercury in cottonmouths (Agkistrodon piscivorus) from northeastern Texas, USA,

Abstract Dspite their ecological importance andglobal decline, snakes remain poorly studied in ecotoxicology. In this study, we examined organochlorine (OC) pesticide and mercury accumulation in cottonmouths (Agkistrodon piscivorus) living on a contaminated site in northeastern Texas (USA). Mercury and p,p,-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p,-DDE) were detected in all snakes examined. Other OCs, including p,p,-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (p,p,-DDT), methoxychlor, aldrin, and heptachlor, also were detected, but less frequently. Concentrations of p,p,-DDE were higher in fat than in liver, while mercury concentrations were highest in liver, followed by kidney and tail clips. One animal contained the highest mercury concentration yet reported for a snake (8,610 ng/g). Mercury concentrations in liver and kidney were higher in males than females, while no intersex differences in p,p,-DDE concentrations were observed. Concentrations of p,p,-DDE in fat were correlated positively with body size in male cottonmouths but not females, suggesting a slower rate of accumulation in females. Body size strongly predicted mercury concentrations in liver, kidney, and tail clips of both sexes. Tail clips were strong predictors of mercury in liver and kidney in males but not females, suggesting possible sex-dependent differences in mercury toxicokinetics. Both long-term field studies and controlled laboratory investigations are needed to adequately assess the response of cottonmouths to chronic contaminant exposure. [source]


Effect of ethoxylate number and alkyl chain length on the pathway and kinetics of linear alcohol ethoxylate biodegradation in activated sludge

Abstract Batch activated-sludge die-away studies were conducted with various pure homologs to determine the effect of ethoxylate number and alkyl chain length on the kinetics of primary and ultimate biodegradation of linear alcohol ethoxylates. The 14C-(ethoxylate) homologs C14E1, C14E3, C14E6, and C14E9 were used to investigate the effect of ethoxylate number, and 14C-(ethoxylate) homologs C12E6, C14E6, and C16E6 were used to examine the effect of chain length. Activated sludge was dosed with a trace concentration (0.2 ,M) of each homolog, and the disappearance of parent, formation of metabolites, production of 14CO2, and uptake into solids were monitored with time. Ethoxylate number had little effect on the first-order decay rates for primary biodegradation, which ranged from 61 to 78 h,1. However, alkyl chain length had a larger effect, with the C16 chain-length homolog exhibiting a slower rate of parent decay (18 h,1) compared to its corresponding C12 and C14 homologs (61,69 h,1). Ethoxylate number affected the mechanism of biodegradation, with fission of the central ether bond to yield the corresponding fatty alcohol and (poly)ethylene glycol group increasing in dominance with increasing ethoxylate number. Based upon the measured rates of primary biodegradation, removal of parent during activated-sludge treatment was predicted to range between 99.7 and 99.8% for all homologs except C16E6, which had a predicted removal of 98.9%. Based upon the measured rates of ultimate biodegradation, removal of ethoxylate-containing metabolites was predicted to exceed 83% for all homologs. These predictions corresponded closely with previously published removal measurements in laboratory continuous activated-sludge systems and actual treatment plants. [source]


Ammonium perchlorate effects on thyroid function and growth in bobwhite quail chicks

Abstract Bobwhite quail chicks were used to investigate ammonium perchlorate (AP; NH4ClO4) effects on thyroid function and growth. Beginning at 3 to 4 d posthatch, we evaluated organismal thyroid status (circulating hormones), activation of the hypo-thalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis (thyroid wt) and thyroidal hormone content over a wide range of AP concentrations (50 ,g/L , 4,000 mg/L) in drinking water, for relatively short (2-week) and longer (8-week) exposures. Thyroidal thyroxine (T4) content, the most sensitive index of decreased thyroid function, decreased markedly in response to increasing perchlorate exposure. Thyroid weight and plasma T4 were less sensitive indicators and similar in their ability to detect thyroid changes. Growth measurements (body wt and skeletal growth) were very insensitive indices. Because thyroids contain large hormone stores, with low exposures or short time periods, these stores can be used to maintain circulating hormones, at least temporarily. Most depletion of thyroidal T4 occurred during the first two weeks of AP exposure. Subsequent decreases were at a slower rate presumably because thyrotropin stimulation of the thyroids at least partially compensated for some of the perchlorate effect. Additional studies of the interactions between AP concentration and exposure time are needed for understanding the complex nature of thyroid responses to perchlorate. [source]


Pharmacokinetics of detomidine administered to horses at rest and after maximal exercise

Summary Reason for performing study: Increased doses of detomidine are required to produce sedation in horses after maximal exercise compared to calm or resting horses. Objectives: To determine if the pharmacokinetics of detomidine in Thoroughbred horses are different when the drug is given during recuperation from a brief period of maximal exercise compared to administration at rest. Methods: Six Thoroughbred horses were preconditioned by exercising them on a treadmill. Each horse ran a simulated race at a treadmill speed that caused it to exercise at 120% of its maximal oxygen consumption. One minute after the end of exercise, horses were treated with detomidine. Each horse was treated with the same dose of detomidine on a second occasion a minimum of 14 days later while standing in a stocks. Samples of heparinised blood were obtained at various time points on both occasions. Plasma detomidine concentrations were determined by liquid chromatographymass spectrometry. The plasma concentration vs. time data were analysed by nonlinear regression analysis. Results: Median back-extrapolated time zero plasma concentration was significantly lower and median plasma half-life and median mean residence time were significantly longer when detomidine was administered after exercise compared to administration at rest. Median volume of distribution was significantly higher after exercise but median plasma clearance was not different between the 2 administrations. Conclusions and potential relevance: Detomidine i.v. is more widely distributed when administered to horses immediately after exercise compared to administration at rest resulting in lower peak plasma concentrations and a slower rate of elimination. The dose requirement to produce an equivalent effect may be higher in horses after exercise than in resting horses and less frequent subsequent doses may be required to produce a sustained effect. Phenotypic diagnosis of dwarfism in six Friesian horses

Summary An extreme form of abnormal development, dwarfism, is common in man and some animals, but has not been officially reported in horses. Within the Friesian horse breed, congenital dwarfism has been recognised for many years, but no detailed report exists on its phenotype. The most salient feature of the dwarf syndrome is the physeal growth retardation in both limbs and ribs. Affected animals have approximately 25% shorter fore- and hindlimbs and approximately 50% reduced bodyweight. Post natal growth is still possible in these animals, albeit at a slower rate: the head and back grow faster than the limbs and ribs leading to the characteristic disproportional growth disturbance. Thus, mature dwarfs exhibit a normal, but a relatively larger head conformation, a broader chest with narrowing at the costochondral junction, a disproportionally long back, abnormally short limbs, hyperextension of the fetlocks and narrow long-toed hooves. Furthermore, a dysplastic metaphysis of the distal metacarpus and metatarsus is radiographically evident. Microscopic analysis of the growth plates at the costochondral junction shows an irregular transition from cartilage to bone, and thickening and disturbed formation of chondrocyte columns, which is similar to findings in osteochondrodysplasia. Alarm Calls Affect Foraging Behavior in Eastern Chipmunks (Tamias striatus, Rodentia: Sciuridae)

We used playback experiments to test whether alarm calls affected the foraging behavior of eastern chipmunks (Tamias striatus). We subjected chipmunks, foraging at artificial feeding stations, to three playback treatments (silent, control noise, and alarm call) and examined changes in vigilant and foraging behavior. Chipmunks responded to alarm calls with a greater degree and duration of vigilant behavior, such as look-ups and alert postures. Chipmunks also ran a shorter distance to cover and took longer to re-emerge from the burrow after hearing an alarm call. Alarm calls caused individuals to spend more time exposed at the feeding stations; however, individuals also took significantly fewer seeds after hearing an alarm call. This was not due to a difference in the time spent handling food, but rather to a slower rate of loading. Chipmunks appear to sacrifice energy gain by increasing vigilance after hearing an alarm call. This study suggests that to avoid the costs of unnecessary escape behavior, individuals directly assess their own risk rather than relying only on indirect cues such as alarm calls. [source]


Dynamics of skeletal muscle oxygenation during sequential bouts of moderate exercise

In rat muscle, faster dynamics of microvascular PO2 (approximately blood flowto O2 uptakeratio) after prior contractions that did not alter blood [lactate] have been considered to be a consequence of fasterkinetics. However, in humans, prior exercise below the lactate threshold does not affect the pulmonarykinetics. To clarify this apparent discrepancy, we examined the effects of prior moderate exercise on the kinetics of muscle oxygenation (deoxyhaemoglobin, [HHb],) and pulmonaryin humans. Eight subjects performed two bouts (6 min each) of moderate-intensity cycling separated by 6 min of baseline pedalling. Muscle (vastus lateralis) oxygenation was evaluated by near-infrared spectroscopy andwas measured breath-by-breath. The time constant (,) of the primary component ofwas not significantly affected by prior exercise (21.5 ± 9.2 versus 25.6 ± 9.7 s; Bout 1 versus 2, P= 0.49). The time delay (TD) of [HHb] decreased (11.6 ± 2.6 versus 7.7 ± 1.5 s; Bout 1 versus 2, P < 0.05) and ,[HHb] increased (7.0 ± 3.5 versus 10.2 ± 4.6 s; Bout 1 versus 2, P < 0.05), while the mean response time (TD +,) did not change (18.6 ± 2.7 versus 17.9 ± 3.9 s) after prior moderate exercise. Thus, prior moderate exercise resulted in shorter onset and slower rate of increase in [HHb] during subsequent exercise. These data suggest that prior exercise altered the dynamic interaction betweenandfollowing the onset of exercise. [source]


In vivo studies on the long-term persistence of volatiles in the breath

Abstract The long-term persistence of ,ve volatiles in the breath was studied to determine the effects of respiration and the physical properties of each of the volatiles. The long-term persistence of each of the volatiles in the breath was modelled successfully and used to show that the breath volatile concentration 1 min after consuming the solution was greater when panelists exhaled at a slower rate. The air,water partition coef,cient (Kaw) was in,uential in controlling the initial stages of persistence; compounds with a higher Kaw were found to decay at a much faster rate than compounds with a low Kaw. The decay rate during the later stages was constant for all the volatiles, which indicates that the rate-limiting factor during the later stages of persistence does not depend on the individual properties of the volatiles. The role of tightly bound ATP in Escherichia coli tRNA nucleotidyltransferase

Background The CCA-adding enzyme [ATP(CTP): tRNA nucleotidyltransferase (EC. 2.7.7.25)] catalyses the addition of the conserved CCA sequence to the 3,-terminus of tRNAs. All CCA-adding enzymes are classified into the nucleotidyltransferase superfamily. In the absence of ATP, the Escherichia coli CCA-adding enzyme displays anomalous poly(C) polymerase activity. Results We show that CCA-adding enzyme over-expressed in E. coli exists in an ATP-bound form. The affinities of ATP and CTP towards the enzyme were estimated by several methods, and the dissociation constants for ATP and CTP were determined to be 6.3 and 188 ,m, respectively. AMP-incorporation terminated the nucleotidyltransferase reaction, while in the absence of ATP, the enzyme continued poly(C) polymerization. In the case of a tRNA substrate with a mutation in the T-loop region, normal CC was added at a much slower rate compared with the wild-type, but anomalous poly(C) polymerization occurred at the same rate as in the wild-type. Conclusion Based on the findings outlined above, we concluded that the E. coli CCA-adding enzyme possesses at least two distinct nucleotide binding sites, one responsible for ATP binding and the other(s) for CTP binding. The addition of ATP from the tight ATP binding site terminates nucleotide incorporation, thus limiting poly(C) polymerization to CCA. It is also suggested that during anomalous poly(C) polymerization, tRNA translocates from the tRNA binding site upon the third C addition. [source]


Water savings in mature deciduous forest trees under elevated CO2

Abstract Stomatal conductance of plants exposed to elevated CO2 is often reduced. Whether this leads to water savings in tall forest-trees under future CO2 concentrations is largely unknown but could have significant implications for climate and hydrology. We used three different sets of measurements (sap flow, soil moisture and canopy temperature) to quantify potential water savings under elevated CO2 in a ca. 35 m tall, ca. 100 years old mixed deciduous forest. Part of the forest canopy was exposed to 540 ppm CO2 during daylight hours using free air CO2 enrichment (FACE) and the Swiss Canopy Crane (SCC). Across species and a wide range of weather conditions, sap flow was reduced by 14% in trees subjected to elevated CO2, yielding ca. 10% reduction in evapotranspiration. This signal is likely to diminish as atmospheric feedback through reduced moistening of the air comes into play at landscape scale. Vapour pressure deficit (VPD)-sap flow response curves show that the CO2 effect is greatest at low VPD, and that sap flow saturation tends to occur at lower VPD in CO2 -treated trees. Matching stomatal response data, the CO2 effect was largely produced by Carpinus and Fagus, with Quercus contributing little. In line with these findings, soil moisture at 10 cm depth decreased at a slower rate under high-CO2 trees than under control trees during rainless periods, with a reversal of this trend during prolonged drought when CO2 -treated trees take advantage from initial water savings. High-resolution thermal images taken at different heights above the forest canopy did detect reduced water loss through altered energy balance only at <5 m distance (0.44 K leaf warming of CO2 -treated Fagus trees). Short discontinuations of CO2 supply during morning hours had no measurable canopy temperature effects, most likely because the stomatal effects were small compared with the aerodynamic constraints in these dense, broad-leaved canopies. Hence, on a seasonal basis, these data suggest a <10% reduction in water consumption in this type of forest when the atmosphere reaches 540% ppm CO2. [source]


Short- and Long-Term Mortality after an Acute Illness for Elderly Whites and Blacks

Objective. To estimate racial differences in mortality at 30 days and up to 2 years following a hospital admission for the elderly with common medical conditions. Data Sources. The Medicare Provider Analysis and Review File and the VA Patient Treatment File from 1998 to 2002 were used to extract patients 65 or older admitted with a principal diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction, stroke, hip fracture, gastrointestinal bleeding, congestive heart failure, or pneumonia. Study Design. A retrospective analysis of risk-adjusted mortality after hospital admission for blacks and whites by medical condition and in different hospital settings. Principal Findings. Black Medicare patients had consistently lower adjusted 30-day mortality than white Medicare patients, but the initial survival advantage observed among blacks dissipated beyond 30 days and reversed by 2 years. For VA hospitalizations similar patterns were observed, but the initial survival advantage for blacks dissipated at a slower rate. Conclusions. Racial disparities in health are more likely to be generated in the posthospital phase of the process of care delivery rather than during the hospital stay. The slower rate of increase in relative mortality among black VA patients suggests an integrated health care delivery system like the VA may attenuate racial disparities in health. [source]


Evaluation of the impact of highly active antiretroviral therapy on immune recovery in antiretroviral naive patients

Objectives To examine the extent of immune reconstitution in treatment-naive patients with CD4 T-cell counts <500 cells/,L following 48 weeks of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Methods Thirteen antiretroviral naive patients were evaluated longitudinally for 48 weeks on HAART utilizing immune functional and lymphocyte phenotyping assays, including lymphocyte proliferation assay, flow cytometric evaluation of cell surface markers, and delayed type hypersensitivity skin tests. Virologic responses were monitored using commercially available viral load assays and gag/pol mRNA quantification using simultaneous immunophenotyping/UltraSensitive fluorescence in situ hybridization (ViroTect In Cell HIV-1 Detection Kit; Invirion, Frankfort, MI). Thymic function was evaluated for a subset of four patients using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for T-cell receptor excision circle (TREC) quantification and thymic scans using computerized axial tomography (CT) of the thymus. Results HAART initiation resulted in a significant decline in plasma viremia and percentage of infected peripheral blood cells, and a rise in CD4 T cells from a baseline median of 207 cells/,L to a week-48 median of 617 cells/,L. The rise was predominately in CD4 memory cells. Naive T cells also increased in number, but at a slower rate. Activated (HLA-DR CD38) CD4 and CD8 T cells were elevated at baseline (24 and 62%, respectively) and declined by week 48 (17 and 36%, respectively) but did not reach normal levels. The number of Fas CD4 T cells increased from a baseline median of 169 to 381 cells/,L at week 48. Both soluble interleukin (IL)-2 and tumour necrosis factor (TNF) II receptors declined by week 48. HIV p24 lymphocyte proliferation assay responses were transiently detected in three patients. TREC values increased from a median 6400 copies/,g at baseline to a week-48 median value of 26 697 copies/,g. Conclusion Immune functional reconstitution was not achieved in these HAART naive patients. [source]


Effects of neonatal nutrition on adult reproduction in a passerine bird

Effects of neonatal nutrition on adult reproductive performance have been little studied. In Zebra Finches Taeniopygia guttata, poor neonatal nutrition is known to be associated with reduced blood antioxidant levels in adulthood, which could impair reproductive performance. Here, we compare the effects of standard-quality (SQ) or lower-quality (LQ) neonatal nutrition on components of fecundity. Compared with controls, LQ birds took longer to initiate egg-laying, and then laid eggs at a slower rate. LQ birds did not, however, show reduced clutch mass or size, or yolk antioxidant levels (retinol; ,- or ,-tocopherol; carotenoids). Zebra Finches breed opportunistically, often only once in their short lifetime. Therefore, the timing but also the number and quality of eggs are critical fitness-related traits. Our results indicate that LQ birds had impaired reproductive capacity, suggesting resource accumulation constraints. Maximizing egg number and quality appears to have been more important than rapid egg production. [source]


Poor nutritional condition as a consequence of high dominance status in the Coal Tit Parus ater

The costs and benefits of dominance status have been investigated in the past and it has generally been reported that subdominant birds are at a nutritional disadvantage owing to their low dominance status. The nutritional condition of birds during winter can be important in determining their likelihood of survival. This is particularly so in small passerines that are sensitive to severe weather conditions. Ptilochronology is an accurate method used to produce a long-term estimate of body condition spanning the number of days that it takes to grow a new feather. Ptilochronology was used during this study to estimate the nutritional condition of Coal Tits Parus ater during one winter and how condition was affected by dominance status. Dominant Coal Tits produced poorer quality feathers, which they grew at a slower rate, than did subdominant conspecifics. This study highlights a nutritional cost to high dominance status that could have long-term consequences because the induced tail feathers will not be replaced for at least 5 months. [source]


The MMSE orientation for time domain is a strong predictor of subsequent cognitive decline in the elderly

Abstract Background The mini-mental state exam (MMSE) has been used to address questions such as determination of appropriate cutoff scores for differentiation of individuals with intact cognitive function from patients with dementia and rate of cognitive decline. However, little is known about the relationship of performance in specific cognitive domains to subsequent overall decline. Objective To examine the specific and/or combined contribution of four MMSE domains (orientation for time, orientation for place, delayed recall, and attention) to prediction of overall cognitive decline on the MMSE. Methods Linear mixed models were applied to 505 elderly nursing home residents (mean age,=,85,,>,12 years education,=,27%; 79% F, mean follow-up,=,3.20 years) to examine the relationship between baseline scores of these domains and total MMSE scores over time. Results Orientation for time was the only domain significantly associated with MMSE decline over time. Combination of poor delayed recall with either attention or orientation for place was associated with significantly increased decline on the MMSE. Conclusions The MMSE orientation for time predicts overall decline on MMSE scores over time. The effects of RANTES/CCR5 promoter polymorphisms on HIV disease progression in HIV-infected Koreans

Summary Recent studies have reported that two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the RANTES gene promoter region, ,403G/A and ,28C/G, are associated with a slower rate of decline in CD4+ T-cell number, whereas genetic polymorphisms within the CCR5 promoter are linked to acceleration of AIDS progression. In this study, we investigated the distribution of SNPs in the RANTES and CCR5 promoters and the association between these SNPs and HIV-1 disease progression in HIV-infected Koreans. Twenty-seven long-term non-progressors (LTNPs), 29 AIDS patients and 39 HIV-uninfected persons were enrolled in this study. SNPs for the RANTES and CCR5 promoters were determined by polymerase chain reaction,restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and a direct sequencing method. In the analysis of RANTES promoter polymorphisms, the genotypic and allelic frequencies of the RANTES ,28G mutation were significantly lower in HIV-infected patients than in HIV-uninfected persons (P = 0.005 and P = 0.001, respectively). The genotypic frequencies of RANTES ,28G and ,403A mutations did not differ significantly between LTNPs and AIDS patients. The frequencies of three CCR5 promoter polymorphisms, designated 59029 G/A, 59353T/C, and 59402G/A, did not differ significantly between HIV-uninfected and HIV-infected patients. However, the allelic frequency of CCR559353C was significantly higher in AIDS patients than in LTNPs (P = 0.003). These results suggest that RANTES-28G and CCR5 59353C mutations might be associated with HIV infection or pathogenesis in the Korean population. [source]


Supplementation of xylanase and phospholipase to wheat-based diets for weaner pigs

Summary The effects of supplementing a wheat-based diet for weaner pigs with exogenous xylanase and phospholipase on ileal and faecal nutrient digestibilities and on the level of microbial metabolites in ileal digesta were examined. Fourteen piglets, weaned at 11 days, were fitted with a simple T-cannula at the distal ileum. The pigs were offered a control diet or diets supplemented with xylanase and phospholipase individually or in combination, in a two period crossover design. The combination of xylanase and phospholipase tended to increase the ileal recovery of the amino sugar galactosamine, whereas the concentration expressed in mg/kg dry matter intake of glucosamine was slightly decreased (p < 0.10). There was neither an effect of enzyme supplementation on ileal and faecal digestibility of the other nutrients and energy, nor was there an effect on pH and on the level of microbial metabolites in ileal digesta. However, an increase in ileal and faecal nutrient and energy digestibility with increasing age was observed. The ileal and faecal digestibility coefficients (except for ether extract) were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in experimental period I than in period II. These higher values may be attributed to a lower feed intake during period I. Since a lower level of feed intake is generally associated with a slower rate of passage and a longer retention time of digesta, a positive impact on digestion and absorption of nutrients can be assumed, which, on the other hand, limits the potential of additional enzyme effects. A novel approach to assessing percutaneous VX poisoning in the conscious guinea-pig,

Abstract Nerve agents like VX (S-2-diisopropylaminoethyl-O-ethyl-methylphosphonothiolate) are potent irreversible acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors. Following percutaneous nerve agent exposure there is a slower rate of absorption, later onset and longer duration of signs of poisoning. Relatively little is known about the physiological effects of percutaneously applied nerve agent in unanaesthetised laboratory animals. Heart rate (ECG), brain electrical activity (EEG), body temperature, locomotor activity and clinical signs were monitored following percutaneous application of VX to conscious guinea-pigs. A fall in heart rate (bradycardia) preceded incapacitation following the highest VX dose, and occurred in the absence of incapacitation at the lower doses. Following the highest dose of VX (0.592 mg kg,1) three out of four animals died within 24 h. The lower two doses of VX (0.296 and 0.148 mg kg,1), produced extended periods of bradycardia in the absence of observable signs of poisoning. Bradycardia preceded, or occurred in the absence of, a temperature decrease; seizure-like EEG changes were not observed at any of the VX doses tested. Acetylcholinesterase activity was significantly inhibited in the blood and most brain areas at 48 h. There were significant dose-related decreases in body weight at 24 and 48 h following VX. This preliminary study suggests that decreased heart rate may be an early sign of the toxic effects of VX, whereas temperature and observable clinical signs are not good early indicators of percutaneous VX poisoning in this animal model. Future studies will use this model to assess the benefit of administering medical countermeasures in response to a defined decrease in heart rate. © Crown Copyright 2007. Colonization success of carabid beetles on Baltic islands

Abstract Aims (1) To test whether there is a significant increase in carabid species richness with an increase in island size and, if so, if it is due to island area per se or habitat diversity. (2) To investigate whether scattered islands accumulate species quicker than islands close to each other, per island size. (3) To investigate changes in the proportions of carabid wing morphs between the Finnish mainland and islands in the Baltic Sea. Location Islands in the south-western archipelago of Finland, in the Baltic Sea. Methods Carabid beetles were collected using pitfall traps (diameter, 65 mm; volume, 170 mL), half-filled with an ethylene-glycol,water mixture, from 22 May to 20 September 1993 on 24 islands. Island size varied between 0.5 and c. 7000 ha, and each island had between one and four habitat types sampled. Results A total of 61 carabid species were captured on these islands. Pterostichus niger was numerically dominant on 15 of the 24 islands and made up 34.5% of the total catch. The islands had a significantly higher proportion of brachypterous species compared to the Finnish mainland. The islands also accumulated species at a much slower rate (z = 0.06) than that generally observed in the literature, and, for carabids, a mainly predacious group, habitat diversity had little predictive power in explaining species richness. Islands close to each other (a few hundred metres apart) accumulated species at a slower rate than did scattered islands, as island size increased. Main conclusions Although carabids disperse relatively easily to remote islands (perhaps a result of low Baltic Sea salinity and short interisland distances), colonization success appears to depend on a multitude of factors, including availability of suitable habitat on these islands, competitive superiority, survival ability during dispersal and island arrival sequence. Structural Trends in the Aging Femoral Neck and Proximal Shaft: Analysis of the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry Data,

Abstract Hip scans of U.S. adults aged 20,99 years acquired in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) were analyzed with a structural analysis program. The program analyzes narrow (3 mm wide) regions at specific locations across the proximal femur to measure bone mineral density (BMD) as well as cross-sectional areas (CSAs), cross-sectional moments of inertia (CSMI), section moduli, subperiosteal widths, and estimated mean cortical thickness. Measurements are reported here on a non-Hispanic white subgroup of 2719 men and 2904 women for a cortical region across the proximal shaft 2 cm distal to the lesser trochanter and a mixed cortical/trabecular region across the narrowest point of the femoral neck. Apparent age trends in BMD and section modulus were studied for both regions by sex after correction for body weight. The BMD decline with age in the narrow neck was similar to that seen in the Hologic neck region; BMD in the shaft also declined, although at a slower rate. A different pattern was seen for section modulus; furthermore, this pattern depended on sex. Specifically, the section modulus at both the narrow neck and the shaft regions remains nearly constant until the fifth decade in females and then declined at a slower rate than BMD. In males, the narrow neck section modulus declined modestly until the fifth decade and then remained nearly constant whereas the shaft section modulus was static until the fifth decade and then increased steadily. The apparent mechanism for the discord between BMD and section modulus is a linear expansion in subperiosteal diameter in both sexes and in both regions, which tends to mechanically offset net loss of medullary bone mass. These results suggest that aging loss of bone mass in the hip does not necessarily mean reduced mechanical strength. Femoral neck section moduli in the elderly are on the average within 14% of young values in females and within 6% in males. [source]


Tree species range shifts at a continental scale: new predictive insights from a process-based model

Summary 1Climate change has already caused distribution shifts in many species, and climate predictions strongly suggest that these will accelerate in the future. Obtaining reliable predictions of species range shifts under climate change is thus currently one of the most crucial challenges for both ecologists and stakeholders. 2Here we simulate the distributions of 16 North American tree species at a continental scale for the 21st century according to two IPCC storylines, using a process-based species distribution model that for the first time allows identification of the possible causes of distribution change. 3Our projections show local extinctions in the south of species ranges (21% of the present distribution, on average), and colonizations of new habitats in the north, though these are limited by dispersal ability for most species. Areas undergoing local extinctions are slightly larger under climate scenario A2 (+3.2 C, +22% on average) than B2 (+1.0 C, +19% on average). This small difference is caused by nonlinear responses of processes (leaves and flowers phenological processes in particular) to temperature. We also show that local extinction may proceed at a slower rate than forecasted so far. 4Although predicted distribution shifts are very species-specific, we show that the loss of habitats southward will be mostly due to increased drought mortality and decreased reproductive success, while northward colonizations will be primarily promoted by increased probability of fruit ripening and flower frost survival. 5Synthesis. Our results show that different species will not face the same risks due to climate change, because their responses to climate differ as well as their dispersal rate. Focusing on processes, our study therefore tempers the alarming conclusions of widely used niche-based models about biodiversity loss, mainly because our predictions take into account the local adaptation and trait plasticity to climate of the species. Production and Shelf Stability of Multiple-Fortified Quick-Cooking Rice As a Complementary Food

ABSTRACT:, Rice-based complementary foods normally contain inadequate amounts of several micronutrients, such as iron, calcium, and zinc. This study aimed at improving the quality of commercially produced rice-based complementary foods. The analysis centered on identifying a rice-based complementary food that is safe, stable, sensory acceptable, and economical in terms of fortificants (iron, calcium, zinc, thiamine, folate) and effectively packaged for industrial production and distribution. Product colors were mostly in green-yellow tone and slightly changed to more yellow during storage. Sensory acceptability was affected by changes in odor and rancidity but not in color. Rancidity scores were low in aluminum foil laminated plastic bags (ALU). Lipid oxidation significantly increased during storage, but at a slower rate when sodium citrate and ALU were used. Color differences of raw products were detected but not in the cooked ones. Mineral and vitamin losses during processing were 2% to 11% and 20% to 30%, respectively, but no losses were found during storage. FeSO4+ NaFeEDTA added with sodium citrate resulted in the most acceptable product for all packagings. The multiple-fortified quick-cooking rice (MFQCR) developed from this study could be a potentially useful tool for combating micronutrient deficiencies among infants and young children in the countries where rice is the staple food. Comparative study of hydrogen, argon, and xenon uptake into a propane hydrate

Abstract The rate of absorption of hydrogen, argon, and xenon into a Type II propane clathrate hydrate has been studied. The propane hydrate is synthesized from 250-,m ice grains, is estimated to have a porosity of 65% and has roughly the consistency of chalk. Hydrogen is rapidly absorbed by the hydrate sample and approaches the equilibrium vapor pressure in an hour before a very slow residual absorption process ensues. For an initial hydrogen pressure of 1.5 MPa, about 4.5% of the available 512 cages are occupied by hydrogen after 1 h, and 4.9% after 18 h. In contrast, for both argon and xenon significantly more gas is absorbed by the hydrate but at a much slower rate: about 5% as fast for xenon and 1% as fast for argon. We conclude that hydrogen readily diffuses through the propane hydrate microcrystal structure, while argon and xenon are probably absorbed by growing new double hydrate while consuming the propane hydrate. Although considerably higher pressures would be required to store significant quantities of hydrogen in propane hydrate, it appears that the crystal can be loaded and emptied in relatively short times. © 2010 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2010 [source]


Investigation of human pharmacoscintigraphic behavior of two tablets and a capsule formulation of a high dose, poorly water soluble/highly permeable drug (efavirenz)

Abstract Human pharmacoscintigraphic behavior of two tablets and a capsule formulation of a high dose, poorly water soluble, highly permeable, micronized drug (efavirenz) was investigated. The tablets and capsule, prepared with samarium oxide and neutron activated to produce radioactive samarium-153, were evaluated for their in vivo disintegration and gastrointestinal (GI) transit in healthy subjects under fasted condition. Scintigraphic images were acquired to coincide with blood sampling times to assess the plasma concentration-time profile in relation to in vivo disintegration and GI transit. The mean gastric emptying times were approximately the same for all three formulations. Although in vivo dosage form disintegration was faster for Tablet A as compared to Tablet B and was similar between Tablet A and the capsule, Tablet A showed a slower rate and extent of drug absorption than Tablet B and the capsule. The results of this study eliminated the initial hypothesis that the difference in in vivo performance between the two tablet formulations is due to a different rate of in vivo disintegration and suggest that for this drug the in vivo dissolution rate of the drug from its disintegrated dosage form was a more important factor affecting the rate and extent of drug absorption. © 2007 Wiley-Liss, Inc. and the American Pharmacists Association J Pharm Sci 96: 2970,2977, 2007 [source]
