Larval cannibalism during the late developmental stages of a facultatively gregarious encyrtid endoparasitoid

ECOLOGICAL ENTOMOLOGY, Issue 6 2009
ALEJANDRO TENA
Abstract. 1The larvae of many gregarious parasitoid species are usually non-aggressive when they develop in or on a host, but those of Metaphycus flavus are one of the few exceptions known. Herein we describe their aggressive behaviour and the conditions under which it occurs, using observations in which larval development and physical conflict within parasitised and superparasitised hosts were mapped daily. 2Metaphycus flavus larvae often engaged in physical conflict that resulted in consumption of the losing larvae (= cannibalism ) in superparasitised hosts, whereas such conflict and consumption occurred rarely when a single brood developed in a host. 3Cannibalism among M. flavus larvae only occurred after the host resources had become scarce. Typically it occurred after the sixth day of development (fourth-instar larvae) when the larvae in a clutch had separated from their aeroscopic plate and were freed of their attachment to the host's cuticle. 4Female larvae in the initial clutch appeared more aggressive than male larvae when a second clutch was allocated 4 h after the first clutch. The probability of a larva being attacked and consumed by a brood mate increased as the number of larvae increased in the host. This partial tolerance might allow the members of the initial brood to defend themselves from offspring of a superparasitising female (= competitors ). Such post-ovipositional regulation of brood size might be interpreted as high-density intolerance among female offspring. [source]

Acute toxicity and bioaccumulation of pesticide Diazinon in red tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus x Mossambicus albina)

ENVIRONMENTAL TOXICOLOGY, Issue 4 2002
Jaime A. Palacio
Abstract Young red tilapias were exposed for 96 h to each one of 6 concentrations of the pesticide Diazinon in order to determine the pesticide's acute toxicity level. After the ascertaining the lethal concentration (LC50) at 96 h, a level 10 times lower was selected for the bioaccumulation study of the pesticide in male and female specimens exposed for 9 days. The elimination process was carried out for 10 days beginning right after the conclusion of the accumulation process. Analytical procedures were developed and used for the studies of acute toxicity and bioaccumulation of Diazinon in red tilapia. A lethal concentration [LC50 (96 h)] of 3.85 mg/L was found, and steady-state accumulation, at a concentration of 28.45 mg/kg, was reached at 7.72 days. In the elimination process a concentration of 0.29 mg/kg was found in tilapia tissue by the sixth day after the fish were moved to clean water, and it continued to decrease quickly toward nondetectable levels. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A blinded, crossover study of the efficacy of the ketogenic diet

EPILEPSIA, Issue 2 2009
John M. Freeman
Summary Despite over 80 years of use, the ketogenic diet (KD) has never been tested in a blinded manner. Twenty children with intractable Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) were fasted 36 h and then randomized to receive the classic KD in conjunction with a solution containing either 60 g/day of glucose or saccharin. Parents and physicians were blinded to both the solution composition and level of ketosis. A crossover to the KD with the alternate solution occurred following the sixth day and a repeat fast. A 24-h electroencephalography (EEG) was obtained at baseline and after each arm. After administration of the solution, there was moderate evidence of a reduction in parent-reported seizures between the glucose and saccharin arms, with a median difference of 1.5 seizures per day (p = 0.07). There was no reduction in the number of EEG-identified events, with a median reduction of 7 events per day (p = 0.33). Ketosis was not completely eliminated in the glucose-added arm. [source]

Human hematopoietic stem/progenitor-enriched CD34+ cells are mobilized into peripheral blood during stress related to ischemic stroke or acute myocardial infarction

EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF HAEMATOLOGY, Issue 6 2005
E. Paczkowska
Abstract:, The hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells harvested directly from the bone marrow (BM) or G-CSF mobilized peripheral blood were demonstrated to play an important role in regeneration of damaged organs (1, 2). Here, we asked if the stroke- or acute heart infarct-related stress triggers mobilization of stem/progenitor-enriched CD34+cells from the BM into the peripheral blood, which subsequently could contribute to regeneration of damaged tissues. To address this question the peripheral blood samples were harvested from patients with ischemic stroke during the first 24 h of manifestation of symptoms and on the second and sixth day afterwards or during the first 24 h of acute cardiac pain as well as on the second and sixth day of infarct. We measured in these patients (i) percentage of circulating hematopoietic stem/progenitor-enriched CD34+ cells in peripheral blood by employing fluorescence activated cell sorter (FACS) and (ii) number of hematopoietic progenitor cells for the granulocyte-monocytic colony-forming unit (CFU-GM) and erythoid burst-forming unit (BFU-E) lineages circulating in peripheral blood. We concluded that stress related to ischemic stroke or acute myocardial infarction triggers the mobilization of hematopoietic stem/progenitor-enriched CD34+ cells from the BM into peripheral blood. These circulating stem/progenitor-enriched CD34+ cells may contribute to the regeneration of ischemic tissues, however, this possibility requires further studies. [source]

Majocchi's granuloma trichophyticum in an immunocompromised patient

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF DERMATOLOGY, Issue 2 2000
Somesh Gupta MD
A 40-year-old man with alcoholic liver disease was referred to the dermatology clinic for asymptomatic papulonodular lesions over the face of 15 days' duration. Cutaneous examination revealed multiple, dusky red to yellow, follicular as well as perifollicular papulonodular lesions, varying in size from 0.5 to 2 cm ( Fig. 1). They were distributed over the forehead, cheeks, eyelids, nose, chin, beard area, retroauricular area, and neck. Careful examination revealed well-defined scaly margins on the back of the pinna ( Fig. 2). KOH examination of a scraping from the neck revealed nonpigmented septate hyphae. Histopathologic examination of the excised nodule revealed epitheloid cell granulomas with neutrophilic microabscesses surrounding the hair follicles. Periodic acid,Schiff stain was noncontributory. Culture of an excised nodule on Sabouraud's agar showed growth of Trichophyton rubrum. Considering his liver disease, the patient was initially treated with topical terbinafine. Because of a lack of a satisfactory response this was changed to oral terbinafine 250 mg/day. There was marked regression of the lesions by the sixth day. Unfortunately, the patient succumbed to complications relating to his liver disease. Figure 1. Follicular and perifollicular lesions of Majocchi's granuloma Figure 2. Quality of thawed deepwater pink shrimp (Parapenaeus longirostris) treated with melanosis-inhibiting formulations during chilled storage

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF FOOD SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY, Issue 9 2007
Maria Elvira López-Caballero
Summary This work investigates how the treatment of thawed deepwater pink shrimp (Parapenaeus longirostris) with several melanosis-inhibiting formulations, affects the quality of the shrimp during chilled storage. Formulations were as follows: a formulation containing 4-hexylresorcinol (0.1 and 0.05%), in combination with organic acids and chelating agents, a commercial formula based on sulphites, and a mixture of gluconic acid and commercial sulphites. No noticeable differences were observed for both trimethylamine and total volatile bases during chilled storage. pH evolution was irrespective of the treatment condition. Microbial load enlarged after the sixth day of chilled storage. Higher total bacteria counts were associated with the control and sulphite treatment conditions, while lactic acid bacteria growth seemed to be favoured under formulations based on 4-hexylresorcinol. The appearance of melanosis occurred more rapidly in control shrimp or in shrimp treated with commercial sulphites. 4-hexylresorcinol formulations preserved the quality of thawed shrimp and could replace traditional sulphites. Effect of seawater temperature on reproductive seasonality and fecundity of Pseudoplexaura porosa (Cnidaria: Octocorallia): latitudinal variation in Caribbean gorgonian reproduction

INVERTEBRATE BIOLOGY, Issue 3 2009
Samantha J. De Putron
Abstract. The majority of tagged colonies of Pseudoplexaura porosa in Bermuda were reproductive over 2 months in the summer. They spawned 5,8 d after the full moon, with a peak on the sixth day, similar to colonies in Panama. The months of spawning were August and September in 1998, but July and August in 1999 and 2000. This temporal difference between the months of spawning corresponded to inter-annual variations in seawater temperature profiles. Initial gamete development each year occurred only when the daily mean seawater temperature during the month before spawning exceeded 27°C. There was a significant positive relationship between reproductive effort (gamete volume) of colonies and rising seawater temperature in the month preceding spawning; this was true for both the initial and the second spawning months. The end of the reproductive season each year was triggered by the decline in seawater temperature past the summer maximum. The duration of the reproductive season of conspecifics at the central Caribbean reef of Panama is 2 months longer than in Bermuda. This can be explained by the smaller annual temperature range at the lower latitude and the earlier onset of temperatures favorable for gamete development. Fecundity estimates for members of P. porosa (mean oocyte and spermary densities) in Bermuda were lower than for conspecifics in Panama. The shorter reproductive season in Bermuda, in addition to the lower fecundity of colonies, indicates that reproduction in P. porosa is compromised at this high latitude reef. [source]

Simple Repair of Aortico-Left Ventricular Tunnel in a Newborn with Early Prenatal Diagnosis

JOURNAL OF CARDIAC SURGERY, Issue 4 2008
Roland Henaine M.D.
Early recognition of ALVT by antenatal ultrasound allows prompt neonatal management and avoidance of harmful aortic valve regurgitation. The present case is unique because of the conjunction of very early antenatal diagnosis, prompt postnatal management, early surgical repair on the sixth day of life, direct closure from the aorta of the aortic orifice only, and optimal postoperative course with excellent mid-term result. Neurocognitive Functions after Beating Heart Mitral Valve Replacement without Cross-Clamping the Aorta

JOURNAL OF CARDIAC SURGERY, Issue 2 2008
Ferit Cicekcioglu M.D.
The aim of this study was to compare preoperative and postoperative neurocognitive functions in patients who underwent beating heart mitral valve replacement on cardiopulmonary bypass without cross-clamping the aorta. Methods: The prospective study included 25 consecutive patients who underwent mitral valve replacement. The operations were carried out on a beating heart method using normothermic cardiopulmonary bypass without cross-clamping the aorta. All patients were evaluated preoperatively (E1) and postoperatively (at sixth day [E2] and second month [E3]) for neurocognitive functions. Results: Neurologic deficit was not observed in the postoperative period. Comparison of the neurocognitive test results, between the preoperative and postoperative assessment for both hemispheric cognitive functions, demonstrated that no deterioration occurred. In the three subsets of left hemispheric cognitive function test evaluation, total verbal learning, delayed recall, and recognition, significant improvements were detected at the postoperative second month (E3) compared to the preoperative results (p = 0.005, 0.01, and 0.047, respectively). Immediate recall and retention were significantly improved within the first postoperative week (E2) when compared to the preoperative results (p = 0.05 and 0.05, respectively). Conclusions: The technique of mitral valve replacement with normothermic cardiopulmonary bypass without cross-clamping of the aorta may be safely used for majority of patients requiring mitral valve replacement without causing deterioration in neurocognitive functions. Left Ventricular Rhabdomyoma With Severe Left Ventricular Outflow Tract Obstruction

JOURNAL OF CARDIAC SURGERY, Issue 5 2007
Ali Sarigul M.D.
Rhabdomyomas are the most common tumors in this group of patients. We herein report a 40-day-old male patient with left ventricular rhabdomyoma. The tumor caused syncope attack and supraventricular tachycardia. An emergency operation was planned and the life-threatening lesion was excised via left ventriculotomy. The patient was extubated on postoperative sixth hour and discharged from hospital on the sixth day of the postoperative period without any problem. This successful operation encourages us not to hesitate to perform an operation in newborns with cardiac neoplasms causing hemodynamic instability. [source]

Nocturnal Oviposition Behavior of Necrophagous Dipterans in Kelantan, Malaysia,

JOURNAL OF FORENSIC SCIENCES, Issue 5 2009
Helmi Mohd Hadi Pritam B.Sc.
Abstract:, The likelihood of dipteran maggots colonizing a corpse due to nocturnal oviposition can be used to challenge the postmortem interval (PMI) estimated assuming diurnal oviposition. Earlier experiments tested nocturnal oviposition behavior by exposing fresh baits once during a single night. In this pilot study, oviposition behavior was studied using beef baits, which, simulating the decay of the body seen in case situations, decomposed inside cages designed to open and close at scheduled intervals during consecutive night or twilight periods. Freshly hatched maggots from diurnally oviposited eggs emerged in control baits on the third day, while a limited number of maggots attributable to nocturnal or twilight oviposition were observed in experimental baits only on the fifth or sixth day, indicating a categorical delay. These results suggest that such delayed and limited nocturnal oviposition is not forensically significant since the larger maggots deriving from diurnal oviposition would be the ones considered when estimating PMI. Acetic Acid, Ethanol and Steam Effects on the Growth of Botrytis cinerea in vitro and Combination of Steam and Modified Atmosphere Packaging to Control Decay in Kiwifruit

JOURNAL OF PHYTOPATHOLOGY, Issue 2 2009
Anastasia L. Lagopodi
Abstract The effects of acetic acid fumigation, ethanol fumigation, and steam heat treatment on growth of Botrytis cinerea in vitro were investigated. The effect of steam heat treatments in combination with modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) on Botrytis decay development on ,Hayward' kiwifruit was also studied. The fungus was grown in Petri dishes on potato dextrose agar. Ethanol fumigation with 100 ,l/l for 3 or 6 min, or 200 ,l/l for 6 min enhanced the growth of B. cinerea. The effect of acetic acid on growth of B. cinerea was time and dosage-dependent. Fumigation with 1 ,l/l for 6 min, 2 ,l/l for 3 min, and 4 ,l/l for 3 min promoted radial growth of the fungus when compared to the growth of the untreated control. Fumigation with 2 ,l/l for 6 min delayed the growth of the fungus for the first 6 days, while fumigation with 6 ,l/l for 3 min delayed the growth of the fungus after the sixth day. Fumigation with 4 or 6 ,l/l acetic acid for 6 min, and 8 ,l/l acetic acid for 3 or 6 min resulted in complete inhibition of fungal growth. Steam heat treatment at 45°C for 6 min, and at 48, 51, and 54°C for 3 or 6 min completely inhibited fungal growth in vitro. Furthermore, steam treatments at 47, 50, and 53°C for 3 or 6 min completely inhibited decay at the stem end of kiwifruit kept at 10°C in MAP for 12 days. However, none of the steam treatments inhibited decay in wounds on the surface of the fruit kept in MAP. [source]

Number of Follicular Waves and Their Effect on Pregnancy Rate in the Cow

REPRODUCTION IN DOMESTIC ANIMALS, Issue 2 2005
HA Çelik
Contents In the study, the relationship of follicular growth waves, oestradiol and pregnancy rates were investigated during oestrus cycle in cows. A total of 22, Brown Swiss cows (3,5 years old) were used for the study. The ovaries of animals were examined from sixth day of cycle to next oestrus by ultrasound. The follicles that were present in the ovarium were recorded. Follicular growth was observed every day by means of ultrasound examination. The blood samples were taken for analysis of oestradiol simultaneously with ultrasound examinations. The oestrus animals were inseminated. Each animal that inseminated was examined by ultrasound on day 28 after insemination for pregnancy diagnosis. Two follicular growth waves were observed in nine of 22 (40.9%), three waves in 13 of 22 (59.1%) animals. The oestradiol was found in the same concentration but in different release patterns between two and three waves animals. Pregnancy rate in cows with three and two follicular waves did not differ. In conclusion, emergence of three waves of follicular growth was higher in Brown Swiss cows, the analysis of oestradiol could be used for determination of the wave numbers and the animals with different waves may have had the same pregnancy rates. 24-Hour Secretion Patterns of Plasma Oestradiol 17, in Pony Mares in Late Gestation

REPRODUCTION IN DOMESTIC ANIMALS, Issue 3 2003
LJ O'Donnell
Contents The mare exhibits nocturnal uterine contractions in the last 6 days of gestation. It is hypothesized that estradiol 17, (O17,) may be associated with the nightly increase in uterine contractions. The 24-h secretion pattern of plasma O17, was measured in 3 pony mares in late gestation to identify changes in release as the mare neared parturition. Blood was collected weekly at 08:00 hours beginning on day 240 and every third day from day 330 until delivery. Serial blood samples were collected from each mare every 30-min for 24-h beginning on gestation day 310 and every sixth day thereafter until parturition. Concentrations of O17, were elevated at night with lowest concentrations occurring directly before sunset (p < 0.01). The natural log of the variance was increased at sunset (p < 0.01) and was decreased during the 6-h period immediately after sunrise. This pattern was especially evident in the 6 days that preceded parturition. The contrast between nocturnal and daytime concentrations of O17, in the last 6 days of gestation may contribute to night-time delivery in the mare. [source]

Synthesis and mobilization of glycogen and trehalose in adult male Rhodnius prolixus

ARCHIVES OF INSECT BIOCHEMISTRY AND PHYSIOLOGY (ELECTRONIC), Issue 1 2009
Ana C. Mariano
Abstract The vector of Chagas' disease, Rhodnius prolixus, feeds exclusively on blood. The blood meals are slowly digested, and these insects wait some weeks before the next meal. During the life of an insect, energy-requiring processes such as moulting, adult gonadal and reproductive growth, vitellogenesis, muscular activity, and fasting, lead to increased metabolism. Carbohydrates are a major source of energy and their mobilization is important. We determined the amounts of glycogen, trehalose, and glucose present in the fat body and/or hemolymph of adult males of R. prolixus and recorded the processes of accumulation and mobilization of these carbohydrates. We also tested our hypothesis that these processes are under endocrine control. The amount of glycogen in the fat body progressively increased until the fourth day after feeding (from 9.3±2.2 to 77. 3±7.5,µg/fat body), then declined to values around 36.3±4.9,µg/fat body on the fifteenth day after the blood meal. Glycogen synthesis was eliminated in decapitated insects and head-transplanted insects synthesized glycogen. The amount of trehalose in the fat body increased until the sixth day after feeding (from 16. 6±1.7 to 40. 6±5.3,nmol/fat body), decreased abruptly, and stabilized between days 7 and 15 at values ranging around 15,19,nmol/fat body. Decapitated insects did not synthesize trehalose after feeding, and this effect was reversed in head-transplanted insects. The concentration of trehalose in the hemolymph increased after the blood meal until the third day (from 0.07±0.01 to 0.75±0.05,mM) and at the fourth day it decreased until the ninth day (0.21±0.01,mM), when it increased again until the fourteenth day (0.79±0.06,mM) after the blood meal, and then declined again. In decapitated insects, trehalose concentrations did not increase soon after the blood meal and at the third day it was very low, but on the fourteenth day it was close to the control values. The concentration of glucose in the hemolymph of untreated insects remained low and constant (0.18±0.01,mM) during the 15 days after feeding, but in decapitated insects it progressively increased until the fifteenth day (2.00±0.10,mM). We recorded the highest trehalase activity in midgut, which was maximal at the eighth day after feeding (2,830±320,nmol of glucose/organ/h). We infer that in Rhodnius prolixus, the metabolism of glycogen, glucose, and trehalose are controlled by factors from the brain, according to physiological demands at different days after the blood meal. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Effects of intraperitoneal vitamin E, melatonin and aprotinin on leptin expression in the guinea pig eye during experimental uveitis

ACTA OPHTHALMOLOGICA, Issue 1 2006
Aysel Kükner
Abstract. Purpose:,To observe ultrastructural changes and leptin expression in the guinea pig eye during experimental uveitis (EU) and the effects of vitamin E, melatonin and aprotinin on leptin expression. Methods:,Thirty male guinea pigs were randomly classified into five groups. Group 1 was the control group. Groups 2, 3, 4 and 5 received intravitreal injections of bovine serum albumin (BSA) to induce EU. At the same time on the third day, groups 3 (EU + vitamin E), 4 (EU + melatonin) and 5 (EU + aprotinin) received intraperitoneal vitamin E (150 mg/kg), melatonin (10 mg/kg) and aprotinin (20 000 IU/kg), respectively. On the sixth day, histopathological and clinical scoring of inflammation were performed, and leptin expression was investigated in the retina, choroid, sclera, episclera and cornea, and compared. Results:,There was a remarkable increase in leptin expression in the retina, choroid, sclera and episclera in the EU group. Leptin expression in the treatment groups was similar to that in the control group. At light and electron microscopic levels, ganglion cells were oedematous and inner plexiform layer thickness had increased in the EU group retinas. Oedema was decreased in the treatment groups. Comparison of the EU and treatment groups revealed significant differences histopathologically and clinically. Conclusion:,Experimental uveitis causes an increase in leptin expression in the retina, choroid, sclera and episclera of guinea pigs. Vitamin E, melatonin and aprotinin inhibit this increase. Leptin seems to be closely related to ocular inflammation. [source]
