Selected AbstractsTranslation of specification units between IP and ATM quality of service declarationsINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS, Issue 4 2003Jens Schmitt Abstract An integral part of any network quality of service (QoS) system are its QoS declarations. QoS declarations consist of service classes, parameters, and specification units. QoS declarations are a component of the QoS architecture, as such they are a source of heterogeneity stemming from the fact that different QoS systems may be based on different QoS architectures and thus use different QoS declarations. A particular problem in that domain is the translation of specification units for QoS systems that are based on different forwarding technologies with respect to variable vs fixed packet sizes, i.e. packet vs cell switching. This is a problem that can be dealt with generically such that its solution can be applied to several situations of technically heterogeneous QoS systems like an RSVP/IntServ,or DiffServ,over an ATM-based system. While straightforward translations have been proposed, we investigate how more efficient translations can be achieved by using a slight but effective modification of existing AAL framing schemes as well as making use of statistical knowledge about packet size distributions. [source] Case study: robotic person following using fuzzy control and image segmentationJOURNAL OF FIELD ROBOTICS (FORMERLY JOURNAL OF ROBOTIC SYSTEMS), Issue 9 2003M. Tarokh The paper proposes a scheme for amobile robot to follow a person in reasonably complex dynamic environments. The scheme consists of an image processing technique for person identification, and a fuzzy controller for following the person. The identification process utilizes image color, shape characteristics, and a region growing technique. The fuzzy logic controller receives image data such as the mass, center of mass, and their rates of change to produce steering and speed commands for the robot. A behavior control strategy is also incorporated to cope with several situations, such as hazard, that are not accounted for in the fuzzy controller. Descriptions of the software/hardware as well as experimental setup and results are provided to demonstrate the feasibility of the scheme. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. [source] The evolving role of liver biopsyALIMENTARY PHARMACOLOGY & THERAPEUTICS, Issue 3 2004M. S. Campbell Summary Liver biopsy is traditionally the ,gold standard, for the evaluation of liver diseases. There are several situations in which its role is being challenged. In hepatitis C, liver biopsy helps assess prognosis and treatment candidacy. An important exception is genotype 2 or 3 because treatment is more likely to succeed and therapy is relatively short in duration. For hepatitis B, liver biopsy gives some prognostic information, but serologic tests and hepatic biochemical tests are the primary determinants of treatment candidacy. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease can be accurately diagnosed without a liver biopsy and, furthermore, there are no specific therapies available. The role of liver biopsy to assess methotrexate-associated hepatotoxicity remains controversial. Finally, patients with focal liver lesions usually do not require biopsy and, in the case of hepatocellular carcinoma, biopsy carries a risk of needle-track seeding. In short, the need for liver biopsy depends on the specific situation and should be performed when there is sufficient uncertainty about diagnosis, severity of disease, prognosis, and treatment decisions. [source] Atypical polysaccharide physical gels: structure/property relationshipsMACROMOLECULAR SYMPOSIA, Issue 1 2003Alexandra Clayer Abstract Chitin and chitosan are polysaccharides produced by the biomass. They have the same general chemical structure and constitute the series of linear copolymers of linked ,, (1->4) glucosamine and N-actylglucosamine. We studied the possibility of forming physical gels with all the terms of this series, whatever the proportion of the two kinds of residues included in the polymer chains. We show that physical gelation is still possible through a percolating process when certain important conditions are met. Initially the concentration in polymer must be above C*; a critical value of the balance between hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions must be achieved and gelation must occur simultaneously everywhere in the medium. These conditions were observed in several situations allowing the formation of different kinds of gels at all values of DA. In view of the rare bio-active properties of chitin and chitosan, these gels were tested for living tissue regeneration and constitute very interesting examples in illustration of our concept of decoys for biological media. Aim., To summarize a current knowledge about this region, represented by the course of sulcus nervi dorsalis penis/clitoridis. Methods., Literature search of years 1970,2007. Main Outcome Measures., In male, it accommodates nervus dorsalis penis whereas in female nervus et arteria dorsalis clitoridis. Lateral border of sulcus nervi dorsalis penis corresponds to vertical ridge and lateral border of sulcus nervi dorsalis clitoridis to ventral arc,two parameters, which are parts of the Phenice's method for sexing of isolated os pubis. Results., Exact preparation of nervus dorsalis penis is crucial in correct performance of conversion of genitalia in patients with transsexualism, in reconstruction of posterior urethra, in hypospadia, during performance of penile blockade during circumcision and in revascularization surgery of erectile dysfunction. Possible role of the sulcus nervi dorsalis penis in the Alcock's syndrome is discussed. Similarly, it is advisable to take care of nervus dorsalis clitoridis during reduction clitoridoplasty in patients with adrenogenital syndrome and during the insertion of transobturator vaginal tape. Injury of nervus dorsalis penis/clitoridis leads to hypestesia or anestesia of glans penis/clitoridis. The injury to arteria dorsalis clitoridis leads to bleeding and/or hematoma. Conclusions., Clinical anatomy of sulci is important in several situations in urologic surgery. [source] HIGH-DOSE TAURINE SUPPLEMENTATION INCREASES SERUM PARAOXONASE AND ARYLESTERASE ACTIVITIES IN EXPERIMENTAL HYPOTHYROIDISMCLINICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL PHARMACOLOGY AND PHYSIOLOGY, Issue 9 2007Melahat Dirican SUMMARY 1Hypothyroidism is accompanied by hyperlipidaemia and oxidative stress and is associated with several complications, such as atherosclerosis. Paraoxonase activity has been reported to decrease in several situations associated with atherosclerosis and oxidative stress. In the present study, the effects of different doses of taurine on serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities, as well as on the serum lipid profile, were investigated in hypothyroid rats. 2Forty male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into five groups as follows: Group 1, rats received normal rat chow and tap water; Group 2, rats received standard rat chow + 0.05% propylthiouracil (PTU) in the drinking water; and Groups 3,5, taurine-supplemented PTU groups (standard rat chow + 0.5, 2 or 3% taurine in the drinking water, respectively, in addition to PTU). Paraoxon or phenylacetate were used as substrates to measure paraoxonase and arylesterase activity, respectively. Plasma and tissue malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, indicators of lipid peroxidation, were determined using the thiobarbituric-acid reactive substances method. Serum triglyceride, total cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein,cholesterol (following precipitation with dextran sulphate,magnesium chloride) were determined using enzymatic methods. 3Serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities were increased and plasma and tissue MDA levels and serum triglyceride levels were reduced in a dose-dependent manner in taurine-treated hypothyroid rats. Taurine concentrations were positively correlated with enzyme activities and negatively correlated with MDA and triglyceride levels. 4Further studies are needed to investigate the role of taurine supplementation in hypothyroidism in human subjects.
