Effect of ethyl icosapentate on urinary calcium and oxalate excretion

Background: The effect of ethyl icosapentate (EPA-E) on urinary calcium and oxalic acid excretion was examined to evaluate whether EPA-E is useful in the prevention of calcium-containing urinary stones. Methods: For 6 months, urine was measured daily from 40 calcium-containing urinary stone producers at an outpatient clinic, before and after the administration of 1800 mg/day EPA-E. The urine was measured for volume, urea nitrogen, creatinine, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, uric acid, oxalic acid and citric acid. Serum total cholesterol and triglyceride were also measured. Results: Urinary calcium excretion was not reduced in any of the patients or particular hypercalciuric groups, nor did the level of calcium change. However, nine of the 25 hypercalciuric patients experienced a significant urinary calcium reduction to the normal calciuric level (a reduction of approximately 44%). It is not known why these particular patients experienced a reduction. Urinary oxalic acid did not change, whether hypercalciuria was present or not. Conclusions: These findings suggest that EPA-E is not particularly effective in reducing urinary calcium excretion in the hypercalciuric patients, but it needs future investigation because some patients experienced significant urinary calcium reduction. Influences of Gender and Age on Relationships Between Alcohol Drinking and Atherosclerotic Risk Factors

Background:, Alcohol drinking affects atherosclerotic progression mainly through blood pressure and lipid metabolism. The purpose of the present study was to clarify whether effects of alcohol drinking on atherosclerotic risk factors differ by gender and age. Methods:, The database of periodic health check-ups for local district workers was used. The subjects were divided into 3 groups according to mean ethanol consumption per day (nondrinkers; light drinkers, less than 30 g per day; moderate-to-heavy drinkers, 30 g or more per day). The mean levels of each atherosclerosis-related variable in the 3 groups were compared. Results:, The mean level of body mass index (BMI) was slightly but significantly lower in drinkers than in nondrinkers in the thirties, forties, and fifties age groups in men and in the twenties, thirties, forties, and fifties age groups in women, while this tendency was not found in the sixties age groups of men and women. In men, mean blood pressure was higher in moderate-to-heavy drinkers than in nondrinkers in all age groups and was higher in light drinkers than in nondrinkers only in the age groups after 40 years. Mean blood pressure of women was higher in the moderate-to-heavy drinker group than in the nondrinker group and this difference became higher with advance of age. In women, mean blood pressure was not affected by light drinking in any of the age groups except for the fifties age group. In men, serum total cholesterol was higher in drinkers than in nondrinkers in the twenties age group but was lower in drinkers than in nondrinkers at thirties or older. Serum total cholesterol in women was lower in drinkers than in nondrinkers in the age groups from twenties to forties but tended to be higher in drinkers than in nondrinkers in the sixties age group. Serum HDL cholesterol increased with advance of age from thirties to sixties in men, while it decreased with advance of age from twenties to sixties in women. Serum HDL cholesterol was higher in drinkers than in nondrinkers in all age groups of men and women, and atherogenic index, calculated by using serum total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol concentrations, was lower in drinkers than in nondrinkers in all age groups of men and women. Conclusion:, Both in men and women, blood pressure and HDL cholesterol were strongly affected by alcohol drinking: the elevating effect of alcohol drinking on blood pressure was more prominent in the elderly than in the young, while the elevating effect of alcohol drinking on serum HDL cholesterol was not influenced by age. Relationships of drinking with total cholesterol and BMI vary by age and gender. [source]


New criteria of normal serum lipid levels in Japanese children: The nationwide study

Abstract Aim: To make new criteria of serum lipid levels in current Japanese children using the large nationwide data provided from Japan Association of Health Service for the analysis. Methods: The subjects were schoolchildren who received screening and care programs for lifestyle related diseases since 1993,1999. Serum total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC) and triglyceride (TG) levels were measured, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC) levels were calculated. Serum lipid levels were analyzed by age and sex. For each serum lipid, we extracted age- and sex-specific group which the mean value was not statistically different from that in 1999 by Student's t -test analysis. Results: The level below the 75th percentile was defined to be acceptable, from the 75th to 95th to be borderline and over the 95th to be high in TC/LDLC. The level below the fifth percentile in HDLC was defined to be low and the level over the 95th percentile in TG to be high. Therefore, TC level was categorized as follows: acceptable < 190 mg/dL; borderline 190,219 mg/dL; and high > 220 mg/dL. The LDLC level was also categorized into: acceptable < 110 mg/dL; borderline 110,139 mg/dL; and high > 140 mg/dL. The cut-off value in TG was determined to be 140 mg/dL and in HDLC was 40 mg/dL. Conclusions: This new criteria should prove valuable in health strategies for rational prevention and intervention in children. It should be emphasized to provide some intervention for Japanese children immediately. [source]


The Effect of Intracavernous Injection of Adipose Tissue-Derived Stem Cells on Hyperlipidemia-Associated Erectile Dysfunction in a Rat Model

ABSTRACT Introduction., Hyperlipidemia has been associated with erectile dysfunction (ED) via damage to the cavernous endothelium and nerves. Adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ADSC) have been shown to differentiate into endothelial cells and secrete vasculotrophic and neurotrophic factors. Aim., To assess whether ADSC have therapeutic effects on hyperlipidemia-associated ED. Methods., Twenty-eight male rats were induced to develop hyperlipidemia with a high-fat diet (hyperlipidemic rats, HR). Ten additional male rats were fed a normal diet to serve as controls (normal rats, NR). Five months later, all rats were subjected to ADSC isolation from paragonadal fat. The cells were cultured for 1 week, labeled with 5-ethynyl-2,-deoxyuridine (EdU), and then injected autologously into the corpus cavernosum of 18 HR. The remaining 10 HR rats were injected with phosphate buffered saline (PBS). At 2 and 14 days post-transplantation, four rats in the HR + ADSC group were sacrificed for tracking of the transplanted cells. At 28 days post-transplantation, all remaining rats were analyzed for serum biochemistry, erectile function, and penile histology. Main Outcome Measures., Erectile function was assessed by intracavernous pressure (ICP) measurement during electrostimulation of the cavernous nerve. Cavernous nerves, endothelium, and smooth muscle were assessed by immunohistochemistry. Results., Serum total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein levels were significantly higher in HR than in NR. High-density lipoprotein level was significantly lower in HR than in NR. Mean ICP/mean arterial pressure ratio was significantly lower in HR + PBS than in NR + PBS or HR + ADSC. Neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS)-positive nerve fibers and endothelial cells were fewer in HR + PBS than in HR + ADSC. Smooth muscle content was significantly higher in both HR groups than in NR. Conclusions., Hyperlipidemia is associated with abnormalities in both the nerves and endothelium. Beneficial effect of laserpitin, a coumarin compound from Angelica keiskei, on lipid metabolism in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats

Summary 1.,Recently, we found that 4-hydroxyderricin, one of the major chalcones in Angelica keiskei extract (an ethyl acetate extract from the yellow liquid of stems), suppressed increases in systolic blood pressure and reduced both serum very low-density lipoprotein levels and liver triglyceride content in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP). In the present study, we have isolated laserpitin, a characteristic coumarin, from the A. keiskei extract and examined the effect of dietary laserpitin on blood pressure and lipid metabolism in SHRSP. 2.,Six-week-old male SHRSP were fed diets containing 0.1% laserpitin for 7 weeks with free access to the diet and water. Bodyweight gain was reduced by dietary laserpitin after 4 weeks through to 7 weeks without any significant change in daily food intake. Serum total cholesterol, phospholipid and apolipoprotein (apo) E levels were significantly increased, which was due to significant increases in cholesterol, phospholipid and apoE contents in the low- and high-density lipoprotein (LDL and HDL, respectively) fractions. These results suggest that dietary laserpitin increases serum apoE-HDL levels. 3.,In the liver, significant decreases in relative liver weight and triglyceride content were found after treatment with laserpitin for 7 weeks. 4.,An investigation of hepatic mRNA expression of proteins involved in lipid metabolism indicated that a significant decrease in hepatic triglyceride lipase may be responsible for the increase in serum HDL levels and also indicated that a marked decrease in adipocyte determination and differentiation factor 1 may be responsible, at least in part, for the decrease in hepatic triglyceride content. 5.,In conclusion, dietary laserpitin produces increases in serum HDL levels, especially apoE-HDL, and decreases in the hepatic triglyceride content in SHRSP. Relationship of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particle size to thyroid function status in Koreans

Summary Objective, Dyslipidaemia is a well-known manifestation of thyroid dysfunction. Recently, small low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particle size has been linked with development of cardiovascular disease. To better understand the effects of thyroid dysfunction on the development of cardiovascular disease, we examined LDL particle size and lipid profiles in subjects with different thyroid function. Methods, Included were 46 patients with overt hypothyroidism, 57 patients with subclinical hypothyroidism, 46 patients with overt hyperthyroidism, 51 patients with subclinical hyperthyroidism, and 110 age- and sex-matched healthy control subjects. We measured LDL particle size and lipid profiles in these subjects. Results, No significant differences were found in LDL particle size between the groups with different thyroid function. Serum total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels were significantly higher in the cases of hypothyroidism than in the cases of hyperthyroidism and the healthy control subjects. Serum triglyceride levels were higher in subjects with overt hypothyroidism than in those with overt hyperthyroidism or healthy control subjects. Conclusions, LDL particle size, the emerging risk factor for atherosclerosis, did not appear to be significantly affected by the degree of thyroid dysfunction. Increased risk of atherosclerosis in hypothyroidism does not appear to be associated with LDL particle size, the non-traditional cardiovascular risk factor. [source]


Thyroid dysfunction and serum lipids: a community-based study

Summary Objective, It is uncertain whether subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) is associated with hypercholesterolaemia, particularly in subjects with SCH and serum TSH , 10 mU/l. Design, patients and measurements, Cross-sectional study of 2108 participants in a 1981 community health survey in Busselton, Western Australia. Serum total cholesterol and triglycerides were measured in all subjects and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) measured (and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) calculated) in a subgroup of 631 subjects at the time of the survey. In 2001, TSH and free T4 concentrations were measured on archived sera stored at ,70 °C. Serum lipid concentrations in subjects with thyroid dysfunction and euthyroid subjects were compared using linear regression models. Results, In the group as a whole, serum total cholesterol was higher in subjects with SCH (N = 119) than in euthyroid subjects (N = 1906) (mean ± SD 6·3 ± 1·3 mmol/l vs. 5·8 ± 1·2 mmol/l, P < 0·001 unadjusted, P = 0·061 adjusted for age, age2 and sex). Serum total cholesterol was similarly elevated in subjects with SCH and TSH , 10 mU/l (N = 89) (6·3 ± 1·3 mmol/l, P < 0·001 unadjusted, P = 0·055 adjusted for age, age2 and sex). In the subgroup analysis, LDL-C was higher in subjects with SCH (N = 30) than in euthyroid subjects (N = 580) (4·1 ± 1·2 mmol/l vs. 3·5 ± 1·0 mmol/l, P < 0·01 unadjusted, P = 0·024 adjusted for age, age2 and sex). LDL-C was significantly increased in subjects with SCH and TSH , 10 mU/l (N = 23) (4·3 ± 1·3 mmol/l, P < 0·001 unadjusted, P = 0·002 adjusted for age, age2 and sex). Conclusion, SCH is associated with increased serum LDL-C concentrations, which is significant after adjustment for age, age2 and sex. [source]


Elevated lipoprotein (a) and apolipoprotein B to AI ratio in South Asian patients with ischaemic stroke,

Summary Background:, Stroke is a continuing cause of excess cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality amongst migrants from the Indian subcontinent (South Asians) living in Britain. However, little is known about the dyslipidaemia associated with stroke in South Asians. In particular, the highly atherogenic lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] and high apolipoprotein (Apo) B to AI ratio are emerging risk factors for CVD. Methods:, Using a case,control study, we investigated features of the dyslipidaemia in South Asian patients with stroke compared with South Asian subjects with no history of clinically detectable stroke. We studied 55 consecutive South Asian patients with ischaemic stroke (confirmed on computerised scan of the brain) and 85 controls. Results:, The stroke patients were significantly older than controls (65.2 vs. 59.8 years, p = 0.001), but were similarly matched for male gender (63.6 vs. 61.2%), smoking habit (20.7 vs. 18.1%) and presence of type 2 diabetes (25.5 vs. 19.3%). There were no differences between serum total cholesterol (p = 0.07) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (p = 0.08) between the groups, but stroke patients had higher serum triglycerides (p = 0.005). Mean [95% confidence interval (CI)] Apo B to AI ratio was higher amongst stroke patients [1.0 (0.9,1.0) vs. 0.7 (0.7,0.75), p < 0.001]. Similarly, geometric mean serum Lp(a) was significantly higher (p = 0.037) in stroke patients [19.9 mg/dl (14.0,28.5)] vs. controls [15.1 mg/dl (11.4,20.1)]. On logistic regression, stroke was independently associated with age and Apo B to AI ratio (p < 0.01). Conclusion:, The present study suggests that Lp(a) and the Apo B to AI ratio are associated with ischaemic stroke in South Asians. A prospective analysis is needed to elucidate the role of Lp(a), Apo B and AI as risk factors for ischaemic stroke in this population, as well as the effects of intervention. [source]


Changes in selected serum parameters of broiler chicken fed supplemental chromium

Summary The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of chromium (Cr) from Cr yeast on the growth performance and total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, total protein and Cr concentration in the serum of broiler chicken. The birds were fed a control diet or a control diet supplemented with Cr at a level of 300, 500 ,g/kg Cr. The supplementation of 500 ,g/kg Cr increased body weight, weight gain and feed efficiency (p < 0.05). In addition, supplementation with Cr decreased the serum total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol (p < 0.05), triglycerides (p < 0.05) and glucose (p < 0.05) concentrations whereas serum HDL cholesterol increased. Serum total protein and serum Cr concentration slightly but not significantly increased in both Cr groups. The study suggest that Cr supplementation particularly at 500 ,g/kg Cr from Cr yeast can influence on carbohydrate and lipid metabolism of broiler chicken and can be used as additives in animal diet but it still needs more investigations. Study of arteriosclerosis in patients with hiatal hernia and reflux esophagitis

Abstract Background and Aim:, It has been reported that the prevalence of hiatal hernia (HH) and reflux esophagitis (RE) increases with age, as does the degree of arteriosclerosis. However, it has not been investigated whether or not arteriosclerosis is correlated with the presence of HH and RE. Therefore, we prospectively investigated the degree of arteriosclerosis in patients with HH and RE compared with subjects without HH and RE. Methods:, We prospectively enrolled 1683 people who visited Shimane Environment and Health Public Corporation for annual medical check-ups. All subjects were investigated by upper gastrointestinal endoscopy for the possible presence of HH and RE. Factors used for assessing cardiovascular risk were sex, age, body mass index (BMI), smoking and drinking habits, serum total cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC). Arteriosclerosis was investigated by measuring systolic blood pressure, heart-carotid pulse wave velocity (HCPWV), bilateral ankle brachial index (ABI) and heart-ankle PWV (HAPWV). Results:, The number of patients with HH and RE was 624 (37.1%) and 143 (8.5%), respectively. The HDLC level of the patients with HH was significantly lower, and the levels of BMI, TG and arteriosclerotic parameters were higher than those of the subjects without HH after adjusting for confounding factors (sex, age and smoking and drinking habits). Cardiovascular and arteriosclerosis parameters except for TG did not differ between the subjects with and without RE. Conclusion:, Levels of arteriosclerosis parameters in patients with HH were higher than in those without HH. However, the association between arteriosclerosis and presence of RE was not clarified. Birth weight and cardiovascular risk factors in a cohort followed until 80 years of age: the study of men born in 1913

Abstract. Objectives., To analyse whether there is a relation-ship between birth weight and cardiovascular risk factors given the influence of potential modifying factors from birth time, former generations and adult life. Design., Population-based cohort followed until 80 years of age. Setting., Sweden. Subjects., A total of 478 singleton men born in 1913 and participating in a population study in Gothenburg, Sweden, from age 50. Main outcome measures., Systolic blood pressure (SBP), antihypertensive treatment, incident diabetes mellitus, and serum total cholesterol, serum triglycerides and waist circumference as both continuous variables and in the highest quintiles of their distributions. Results., After adjustment for the influence of birth time variables, hereditary factors and anthropometric and socio-economic adult life variables, SBP decreased by 3.7 mmHg per 1000 g increase of birth weight, the prevalence of antihypertensive treatment decreased by 32%, diabetes decreased by 53%, serum total cholesterol decreased by 0.20 mmol L,1 and being in the top quintile of serum cholesterol decreased by 23%. The population risk percentage due to a birth weight ,3000 g was for all three outcomes 3.8% and for antihypertensive treatment, diabetes and cholesterol 0.2, 18 and 2.5%, respectively. Conclusions., Low birth weight thus seems to affect the development of increasing SBP, antihypertensive treatment, diabetes and high cholesterol even when potential effect modifiers from birth time, former generations and adult life were taken into account. In the general population, the risk percentage due to a birth weight ,3000 g was largest for diabetes. [source]


Vulnerable Plaque: The Pathology of Unstable Coronary Lesions

Vulnerable plagues have been defined as precursors to lesions that rupture. However, coronary thrombosis may occur from other lesions like plaque erosion and calcified nodules, although to a lesser frequency than rupture. Therefore, the definition of vulnerable plaque should be all-inclusive. Using descriptive terminology, the authors define the precursor lesion of plaque rupture as "thin-cap fibroatheroma" (TCFA). Morphologically, TCFAs have a necrotic core with an overlying thin fibrous cap (< 65 mm) consisting of collagen type I, which is infiltrated by macrophages. These lesions are most frequent in the coronary tree of patients dying with acme myocardial infarction and least common in those with plaque erosion. TCFAs are more common in patients with high serum total cholesterol (TC) and a high TC to high density cholesterol ratio, in women >50 years, and in those patients with elevated levels of high sensitivity C-reactive protein. TCFAs are mostly found in the proximal left anterior descending coronary arteries and less commonly in the proximal right or the proximal left circumflex coronary arteries. In TCFAs, necrotic core length is , 2,17 mm (mean 8 mm) and the underlying cross-sectional luminal narrowing in over 75% of cases is < 75% (< 50% diameter stenosis). The area of the necrotic core in at least 75% of cases is ,3 mm2. Clinical studies of TCFAs are limited as angiography and intravascular ultrasound (TVUS) catheters cannot precisely identify these lesions. Newer catheters and other techniques are at various stages of development and will play a significant role in the understanding of plaque progression and the development of symptomatic coronary artery disease. Melatonin treatment in peri- and postmenopausal women elevates serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels without influencing total cholesterol levels

Abstract:, The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of melatonin on lipid metabolism in peri- and postmenopausal women. Forty-six women were enrolled in these studies. The relationship between night-time serum melatonin levels and serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol was investigated in 36 women. Night-time serum melatonin levels had a negative correlation with serum total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol, and a loose positive correlation with HDL-cholesterol. To examine the effects of exogenous melatonin on lipid metabolism, serum levels of total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides were determined in 10 women before the onset of therapy and after 1 month of oral melatonin administration (1 mg melatonin daily). Melatonin administration significantly increased the serum levels of HDL-cholesterol. These results show that melatonin may influence cholesterol metabolism and suggest that the melatonin administration may become a new medical application for improvement of lipid metabolism and prevention of cardiovascular disease in peri- and postmenopausal women. Decrease in serum total cholesterol and increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in rats following moderate intake of sherry

Abstract Moderate intake of sherry by rats resulted in a decrease in serum total cholesterol and an increase in the proportion of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Oloroso, manzanilla, fino and amontillado sherries all exerted similar effects. These effects were apparently not related to the ethanol content, since an aqueous solution of ethanol did not modify cholesterol levels. Therefore other compounds must be responsible for the effects observed. This paper shows that, in addition to typical red and white wines, sherries should be included in the list of wines with beneficial physiological effects following moderate consumption. A randomized, multicentre, open-label, parallel-group trial to compare the efficacy and safety profile of daming capsule in patients with hypercholesterolemia

Abstract To study the efficacy and tolerability of Daming capsule (DMC) in Chinese patients with hyperlipidemia, a randomized, multi-centre, open-label, parallel-group trial was conducted. Sixty enrolled patients with hyperlipidemia allocated to six medical centers were randomly divided into two groups of 30 individuals each. One group received DMC 2 g b.i.d. for 6 weeks, and the other received pravastatin 10 mg o.d. for 6 weeks. For efficacy assessment, serum total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were measured before and after drug treatment. Serum TC and LDL-C levels in the DMC-treatment group were significantly decreased compared with those before treatment (p < 0.05), while TG and HDL-C levels did not change much. Tolerability was assessed by heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), body mass index (BMI), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and creatinine (Cr), which were not changed in either the DMC or pravastatin groups at 3 and 6 weeks (p > 0.05). Besides, eight patients experienced diarrhea during DMC treatment and two experienced myalgia and epigastric discomfort during pravastatin treatment. Based on the above results, it was concluded that DMC may be a good candidate for the treatment of hyperlipidemia and further clinical trials are warranted. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Comparison of the antiobesity effects of the protopanaxadiol- and protopanaxatriol-type saponins of red ginseng

Abstract A previous study demonstrated that ginseng crude saponins prevent obesity induced by a high-fat diet in rats. Ginseng crude saponins are known to contain a variety of bioactive saponins. The present study investigated and compared the antiobesity activity of protopanaxadiol (PD) and protopanaxatriol (PT) type saponins, major active compounds isolated from crude saponins. Male 4-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats were fed with normal diet (N) or high-fat diet (HF). After 5 weeks, the HF diet group was subdivided into the control HF diet, HF diet-PD and HF diet-PT group (50 mg/kg/day, 3 weeks, i.p.). Treatment with PD and PT in the HF diet group reduced the body weight, total food intake, fat contents, serum total cholesterol and leptin to levels equal to or below the N diet group. The hypothalamic expression of orexigenic neuropeptide Y was significantly decreased with PD or PT treatment, whereas that of anorexigenic cholecystokinin was increased, compared with the control HF diet group. In addition, PD type saponins had more potent antiobesity properties than PT saponins, indicating that PD-type saponins are the major components contributing to the antiobesity activities of ginseng crude saponins. The results suggest that the antiobesity activity of PD and PT type saponins may result from inhibiting energy gain, normalizing hypothalamic neuropeptides and serum biochemicals related to the control of obesity. Effects of Nigella orientalis and N. segetalis fixed oils on blood biochemistry in rats

Abstract Nigella orientalis and N. segetalis fixed oils were administered orally (1 mL/kg/day) to Wistar Kyoto rats for 4 weeks. The effects of the oils on biochemical parameters were compared with a control group that received distilled water under identical conditions. LDL-cholesterol level was decreased significantly in both oil groups while serum total cholesterol and VLDL-cholesterol were decreased significantly following administration of only N. orientalis fixed oil when compared with the control group. The HDL-cholesterol levels were increased significantly in both oil groups. N. orientalis fixed oil significantly reduced Aspartateaminotransferase (AST), Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP), bilirubin and urea levels in rats. There was an increase in the albumin, uric acid and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) concentrations, while the mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) and RDW (red cell distribution width) levels decreased significantly. In N. segetalis fixed oil treated rats, the levels of ALP, Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN), MCHC, RDW were decreased significantly, whereas a significant increase was found in albumin, fibrinogen, Hematocrit (HCT) and MCV levels. The effects of 4 weeks oral intake of N. orientalis and N. segetalis fixed oils on blood malondialdehyde (MDA) and total antioxidant status (TOS) were also investigated in rats. The study showed that the oils had no significant effect on MDA production. N. orientalis and N. segetalis fixed oils caused a significant increase in the total antioxidant status in rats. Hypolipidaemic activity of seaweed from Karachi coast

Abstract During the present study, ethanol extracts of five seaweed species Solieria robusta, Iyengaria stellata, Colpomenia sinuosa, Spatoglossum asperum and Caulerpa racemosa at 10,mg/ 200,g body weight were tested for their hypolipidaemic activity. All the species significantly decreased the serum total cholesterol, triglyceride and low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in normal, triton-induced and diet-induced hyperlipidaemic rats. Solieria robusta was found to be the most effective in reducing the lipid profile, particularly in diet-induced hyperlipidaemic rats. A beneficial effect of the ethanol extract of S. asperum was also found on cardiac and liver enzymes in diet-induced hyperlipidaemic rats. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source]


Sleep-related violence and low serum cholesterol: A preliminary study

Abstract To examine whether there is a relationship between serum cholesterol level and sleep-related violence, we evaluated 15 patients with violent behavior during sleep (VBS) and 15 normal control subjects. The patient and control groups were matched for sex, age, and weight. There were 13 women and two men in each group. The patients with VBS had lower serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, and low-density lipoprotein levels than the healthy subjects. Low cholesterol may effect serotonergic neuronal activity and some types of 5-HT receptors, then may be related to violent behavior during sleep. [source]


Increase in circulating endothelial precursors by atorvastatin in patients with systemic sclerosis

Objective To evaluate whether atorvastatin can increase bone marrow,derived circulating endothelial precursors (CEPs) and improve the vascular symptoms in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc; scleroderma). Methods The study was designed as an open-label, prospective study involving 14 patients with SSc who received 10 mg/day of atorvastatin for 12 weeks and were followed up for the subsequent 4 weeks. CEPs were quantified at weeks 0 (pretreatment), 4, 8, 12 (during treatment), and 16 (posttreatment) by cell sorting followed by 3-color flow cytometry. Raynaud's phenomenon variables, global measures, and psychological scales as well as circulating angiogenic factors and endothelial activation/injury markers were serially assessed. The potential of CEPs to differentiate into mature endothelial cells was examined in cultures with angiogenic stimuli. Results None of the patients experienced an adverse event, but 1 dropped out because of an excessive decrease in serum total cholesterol. Atorvastatin treatment resulted in a 1.7- to 8.0-fold increase in CEPs from baseline levels (P < 0.0001), but the numbers returned to within baseline levels at posttreatment. However, 8 patients (62%) experienced a gradual decrease in the number of CEPs, even while taking atorvastatin. Variables indicating the extent of Raynaud's phenomenon improved significantly, and up-regulated levels of angiogenic factors and vascular endothelial activation/injury markers decreased significantly during atorvastatin treatment. These variables returned to within baseline levels after discontinuation of the drug. In contrast, atorvastatin failed to improve the in vitro maturation potential of CEPs. Conclusion The results of this pilot study suggest that atorvastatin treatment can increase CEPs and may be effective in improving Raynaud's phenomenon, even in SSc patients who have CEP dysfunction intrinsically. SUMMARY 1We investigated the relationship between genetic and environmental factors in hypertensive people living in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China. 2Body mass index, alcohol intake, serum total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol and triglyceride level in the hypertensive group were significantly higher than corresponding values in the normal group. 3Angiotensinogen gene polymorphisms and related haplotype H6 and H9 were strongly associated with essential hypertension. The b2 -adrenergic receptor gene was associated with lipid disorders in Kazakhs in Xinjiang. 4The results suggest that both genetic and environmental factors play an important role in the development of hypertension in Kazakhs in Xinjiang. Thyroid dysfunction and serum lipids: a community-based study

Summary Objective, It is uncertain whether subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) is associated with hypercholesterolaemia, particularly in subjects with SCH and serum TSH , 10 mU/l. Design, patients and measurements, Cross-sectional study of 2108 participants in a 1981 community health survey in Busselton, Western Australia. Serum total cholesterol and triglycerides were measured in all subjects and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) measured (and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) calculated) in a subgroup of 631 subjects at the time of the survey. In 2001, TSH and free T4 concentrations were measured on archived sera stored at ,70 °C. Serum lipid concentrations in subjects with thyroid dysfunction and euthyroid subjects were compared using linear regression models. Results, In the group as a whole, serum total cholesterol was higher in subjects with SCH (N = 119) than in euthyroid subjects (N = 1906) (mean ± SD 6·3 ± 1·3 mmol/l vs. 5·8 ± 1·2 mmol/l, P < 0·001 unadjusted, P = 0·061 adjusted for age, age2 and sex). Serum total cholesterol was similarly elevated in subjects with SCH and TSH , 10 mU/l (N = 89) (6·3 ± 1·3 mmol/l, P < 0·001 unadjusted, P = 0·055 adjusted for age, age2 and sex). In the subgroup analysis, LDL-C was higher in subjects with SCH (N = 30) than in euthyroid subjects (N = 580) (4·1 ± 1·2 mmol/l vs. 3·5 ± 1·0 mmol/l, P < 0·01 unadjusted, P = 0·024 adjusted for age, age2 and sex). LDL-C was significantly increased in subjects with SCH and TSH , 10 mU/l (N = 23) (4·3 ± 1·3 mmol/l, P < 0·001 unadjusted, P = 0·002 adjusted for age, age2 and sex). Conclusion, SCH is associated with increased serum LDL-C concentrations, which is significant after adjustment for age, age2 and sex. [source]


A hot water extract of Chlorella pyrenoidosa reduces body weight and serum lipids in ovariectomized rats

Abstract The effects of a hot water extract of Chlorella pyrenoidosa, which contains chlorella growth factor (CGF), on the body weight, serum lipids, and the bone mass were evaluated using an ovariectomized rat as a model for postmenopausal bone loss. Rats were divided into four groups: sham-operated (Sham), Sham given the CGF solution, ovariectomized (OVX), and OVX given the CGF solution, respectively. Administration of the extract to OVX rats suppressed the body weight gain. After 7 weeks, the administration of the extract to the OVX group reduced increases in both serum total cholesterols and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterols. It also normalized the decrease of triglyceride level in the OVX group. The ovariectomy decreased the tibial bone mineral density (BMD) by 19%, and the administration of the extract to OVX rats did not inhibit this decrease. These results suggest that a dietary supplement of CGF may be useful to control the body weight and improve lipid metabolism of menopausal women. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source]
