Impact of horizontal model resolution and orography on the simulation of a western disturbance and its associated precipitation

A nonhydrostatic version of Pennsylvania State University/National Center for Atmospheric Research (PSU/NCAR) Mesoscale Model (MM5) is used to study the effects of the horizontal model resolution and orography while simulating an active western disturbance (WD) that affected northwest India from 21 to 25 January 1999. Two numerical experiments are conducted with six combinations of two factors: horizontal model resolution and topography. National Center for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR) reanalysed data are used for the initial and boundary conditions. Simulation results indicate that the distribution and the rate of simulated precipitation due to a WD over northwest India is highly sensitive to the horizontal model resolution and topography. The model with finer resolution (30 km) is better able to estimate effects of mesoscale forcing on precipitation over the selected domain. The amount of precipitation simulated over the coarse domain is much less than the observed precipitation owing to the model's unrealistic representation of orographic effects and mesoscale forcing. Simulated terrain, vertical velocity, wind and streamline at different horizontal model resolutions are presented. The detailed structure and distribution of wind speed are simulated in the finer domain. Simulated vertical velocity and precipitation are less in the second experiment when a flat topography is used across the domain, which indicates that topography plays a significant role in modulating the WD. Sensitivity of the horizontal model resolution for precipitation is assessed and it is found that the finer domain of the model simulation gives better results. The heterogeneity of causes and courses of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder

Objective:, Attention-deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a frequent mental disorder with onset in childhood and persistence into adulthood in a sizeable number of people. Despite a rather simple clinical definition, ADHD has many facets because of frequent co-morbid disorders and varying impact on psychosocial functioning. Thus, there is considerable heterogeneity in various domains. Method:, A review of recent research findings in: i) selected domains of aetiology reflecting the role of genes, brain structures and functioning and the interplay of causal factors and ii) clinical heterogeneity in terms of co-morbidities, gender effects, courses and outcomes. Results:, Molecular genetic studies have identified a number of candidate genes which have a small effect on behavioural variation in ADHD. In the most recent Genome Scan Meta Analysis of seven ADHD linkage studies, genome-wide significant linkage was identified on chromosome 16. The volume of both the total brain and various regions including the prefrontal cortex, the caudate nucleus and the vermis of the cerebellum is smaller in ADHD. Functional MRI has documented a specific deficit of frontostriatal networks in ADHD. Integrative aetiological models have to take the interaction of gene and environment on various dysfunctions into account. Clinical heterogeneity results from frequent associations with various co-morbidities, the impact of the disorder on psychosocial functioning, and gender effects. Partly, these effects are evident also in the course and outcome of ADHD. Conclusion:, ADHD is a chronic mental disorder with a complex aetiology. So far, various neurobiological factors have been identified that need to be studied further to better understand their interaction with environmental factors. The clinical presentation and the long-term course of ADHD are manifold. [source]


HUI M,lama O Ke Kai: a positive prevention-based youth development program based on native hawaiian values and activities,

Evaluation of after-school programs that are culturally and place-based and promote positive youth development among minority and indigenous youths has not been widely published. The present evaluation is the first of its kind of an after-school, youth-risk prevention program called Hui Mal,ma O Ke Kai (HMK), that emphasizes Native Hawaiian values and activities to promote positive youth development for fifth and sixth graders (N=110) in a rural Native Hawaiian community. Results indicated positive gains on youth self-reports in Native Hawaiian values, self-esteem, antidrug use, violence prevention strategies, and healthy lifestyle in Year 1, and in family cohesion, school success, and violence prevention strategies in Year 2. Parent reports of their children indicated positive gains in selected domains. Implications include the support for a promising culturally appropriate program, expansion to middle-school-aged youths, and parent involvement. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. [source]


Cross-sectional and longitudinal comparisons of health-related quality of life between patients with prostate carcinoma and matched controls,,§

Abstract BACKGROUND Prostate carcinoma and treatments affect health-related quality of life (HRQOL). The authors prospectively compared prostate and general HRQOL between prostate carcinoma cases and an age-matched and ethnicity-matched control group. METHODS The case cohort consisted of 293 men with localized prostate carcinoma who were selected randomly from the population-based New Mexico Tumor Registry, and the control cohort consisted of 618 men who were selected randomly from administrative databases and matched for age and ethnicity. Subjects completed a baseline survey of demographics, socioeconomic status, comorbidity, and prostate and general HRQOL. Also, 210 cases (71.7%) and 421 controls (67.8%) completed a follow-up survey 5 years later. Multinomial logistic regression models compared baseline characteristics as well as 5-year general HRQOL outcomes measured by selected domains of the Medical Outcomes Study SF-36. The authors used a mixed-model repeated-measures analysis of variance and multinomial regression analyses to compare longitudinal changes in urinary, bowel, and sexual function between groups. RESULTS At baseline, patients with prostate carcinoma had better urinary control and sexual function than controls. Over 5 years, sexual function declined significantly among controls, although urinary function remained stable. However, patients with cancer subsequently reported significant declines in both domains and were left with much worse function and more bother than controls. Bowel function and general HRQOL were similar for both groups at follow-up. CONCLUSIONS Prostate carcinoma treatment led to significant 5-year declines in urinary and sexual function that far exceeded age-related changes in controls. Patients with cancer had significantly worse function and more bother than controls for these disease-specific domains of HRQOL. Bowel function and general HRQOL were not affected by cancer status.
