Discriminating raining from non-raining cloud areas at mid-latitudes using meteosat second generation SEVIRI night-time data

Abstract A new method for the delineation of precipitation during night-time using multispectral satellite data is proposed. The approach is not only applicable to the detection of mainly convective precipitation by means of the commonly used relation between infrared cloud-top temperature and rainfall probability but enables also the detection of stratiform precipitation (e.g. in connection with mid-latitude frontal systems). The presented scheme is based on the conceptual model that precipitating clouds are characterized by a combination of particles large enough to fall, an adequate vertical extension [both represented by the cloud water path (CWP)], and the existence of ice particles in the upper part of the cloud. As no operational retrieval exists for Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) to compute the CWP during night-time, suitable combinations of brightness temperature differences (,T) between the thermal bands of Meteosat Second Generation-Spinning Enhanced Visible and InfraRed Imager (MSG SEVIRI, ,T3.9,10.8, ,T3.9,7.3, ,T8.7,10.8, ,T10.8,12.1) are used to infer implicit information about the CWP and to compute a rainfall confidence level. ,T8.7,10.8 and ,T10.8,12.1 are particularly considered to supply information about the cloud phase. Rain area delineation is realized by using a minimum threshold of the rainfall confidence. To obtain a statistical transfer function between the rainfall confidence and the channel differences, the value combination of the channel differences is compared with ground-based radar data. The retrieval is validated against independent radar data not used for deriving the transfer function and shows an encouraging performance as well as clear improvements compared to existing optical retrieval techniques using only IR thresholds for cloud-top temperature. The potential of variational retrieval of temperature and humidity profiles from Meteosat Second Generation observations

Abstract The quality of temperature and humidity retrievals from the infrared Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) sensors on the geostationary Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) satellites is assessed by means of a one-dimensional variational algorithm. The study is performed with the aim of improving the spatial and temporal resolution of available observations to feed analysis systems designed for high-resolution regional-scale numerical weather prediction (NWP) models. The non-hydrostatic forecast model COSMO in the ARPA-SIMC operational configuration is used to provide background fields. Only clear-sky observations over sea are processed. An optimized one-dimensional variational set-up comprised of two water-vapour and three window channels is selected. It maximizes the reduction of errors in the model backgrounds while ensuring ease of operational implementation through accurate bias correction procedures and correct radiative transfer simulations. The 1Dvar retrieval quality is first quantified in relative terms, employing statistics to estimate the reduction in the background model errors. Additionally the absolute retrieval accuracy is assessed by comparing the analysis with independent radiosonde observations. The inclusion of satellite data brings a substantial reduction in the warm and dry biases present in the forecast model. Moreover it is shown that the use of the retrieved profiles generated by the 1Dvar in the COSMO nudging scheme can locally reduce forecast errors. Placing Progress: Contextual Inequality and Immigrant Incorporation in the United States

Abstract This article contributes to the growing body of research on the economic incorporation of immigrants by considering the relative wages of immigrants, the adult children of immigrants, and the U.S.-born children of U.S. parentage. By disaggregating these three groups racially, comparing entire wage distributions, and comparing the immigrant cities of New York and Los Angeles with the United States overall, it presents a perspective on the complicated contexts of the intergenerational progress of immigrants. In addition to comparing the groups' relative positions in 1990 and 2000, the article decomposes relative wages such that differences in the educational composition of groups can be isolated from residual wage inequality. This research is of interest because consideration of the U.S.-born or educated children of immigrants invokes questions of social mobility and the persistence of ethnic inequality more generally. The article also contributes to a theoretical debate over place and immigrants' progress by examining the second generation, for whom residence in immigrant cities is often theorized as detrimental to economic incorporation. Finally, it introduces a substantial analysis of local wage structures to questions of immigrants' intergenerational economic progress to a much greater extent than has previously been the case. The results suggest that prospects for immigrants' economic incorporation are geographically specific and should be assessed across multiple generations as a result of the continuing contexts of racial wage inequality [source]


Synergistic sex pheromone components of the grey-spotted tussock moth, Orgyia ericae

Abstract The grey-spotted tussock moth, Orgyia ericae Germar (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae), is an important pest of deciduous trees and woody scrublands in northern China. In a field trapping experiment conducted during the flight of the first generation of 2009, synthetic (Z)-6-heneicosen-11-one, a common Orgyia spp. sex pheromone component, attracted O. ericae males. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses (full scan or selected ion-monitoring mode) of pheromone gland extracts from females revealed the presence of a major, a minor, and a trace component, i.e., (6Z,9Z)-heneicosa-6,9-diene, (6Z,9Z)-tricosa-6,9-diene, and (Z)-6-heneicosen-11-one, respectively. Field experiments during the flight of the second generation showed that (6Z,9Z)-tricosa-6,9-diene, the minor component, was inactive alone or in any combination with the other two components, whereas (6Z,9Z)-heneicosa-6,9-diene and (Z)-6-heneicosen-11-one were weakly attractive when tested individually. However, traps baited with a binary blend of (6Z,9Z)-heneicosa-6,9-diene and (Z)-6-heneicosen-11-one caught seven-fold more moths than any other treatment (except the ternary blend), indicating a strong synergistic interaction between the two components. The analytical and field trapping data suggested that (6Z,9Z)-heneicosa-6,9-diene and (Z)-6-heneicosen-11-one are likely the key sex pheromone components of female O. ericae. This synergistic blend will be useful as an efficient monitoring tool, and possible control tool, to combat this economically and ecologically important forest defoliator. [source]


Effects of elevated CO2 associated with maize on multiple generations of the cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera

Abstract Under elevated environmental carbon dioxide (CO2), leaf chewers tend to compensate for decreased leaf nutritional quality with increased consumption; mortality and development times also increase and cause a reduction in the fitness of leaf chewers. However, the effect of elevated CO2 on multiple successive generations of these and other insects is not well understood. Furthermore, information about the direct effects of increased environmental CO2 on developmental time and consumption of herbivores is lacking. In this paper, we tested the hypothesis that cascade effects of elevated CO2 through plants, rather than the direct effects of elevated CO2, are the main factors decreasing the fitness of cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). We used two series of experiments to quantify the growth, development, and consumption of H. armigera fed on an artificial diet or C4 plants (maize) grown under two CO2 levels (ambient vs. double ambient). In the first series of experiments, elevated CO2 had no effect on the population abundance or individual consumption for three successive generations of cotton bollworms fed on an artificial diet. In the second series of experiments, elevated CO2 reduced population abundance of cotton bollworm larvae for two successive generations when they were fed maize milky grains. The specific effects were longer larval duration, lower fecundity, and decreased rm of cotton bollworms. Furthermore, elevated CO2 increased individual consumption when cotton bollworm was fed maize milky grains for two successive generations and decreased the population's total consumption in the first generation but increased it in the second generation. The results from this study indicate that: (1) The effects of elevated CO2 on three successive generations of cotton bollworm fed on artificial diet were weak, or even non-existent, and (2) elevated CO2 increased the consumption when cotton bollworm were fed maize. Our study also suggests that the damage inflicted by cotton bollworm on maize (a C4 plant) will be seriously affected by the increases in atmospheric CO2, which is unlike our previous results for spring wheat (a C3 plant). Differentiation in life cycle of sympatric populations of two forms of Hyphantria moth in central Missouri

Abstract Wing patterns of Hyphantria adult male moths collected in central Missouri were examined throughout the breeding season. Three major peaks of adult flight were observed: the first peak consisted mainly of adults with spotted wings, while the second and third peaks consisted of immaculate adults. Black-headed larvae appeared in the field following the first major peak of moth flight, and red-headed larvae appeared in the field following the second peak. Sympatric red-headed and black-headed forms were collected in the field and subsequently reared on an artificial diet under conditions of 16 h light : 8 h dark (LD 16:8) at 25°C. The larval period of the black-headed form was shorter than the red-headed, whereas the pupal period of the black-headed form was longer than the red-headed. Pupal development is retarded in some individuals at high temperatures in the black-headed form. Photoperiodic response curves for pupal diapause were different between the two forms. The critical photoperiod for pupal diapause was 15 h 10 min in the red-headed form, which was longer than that for the black-headed form (14 h 40 min). The two forms responded to shifts in photoperiod differently. These developmental responses temporally separate the two forms in the field; the red-headed and black-headed forms represent a set of adaptations favoring univoltinism and bivoltinism, respectively. Red-headed larvae fed mainly at night, while the black-headed larvae fed without a clear day,night rhythm. Nocturnal feeding in the red-headed form is adaptive to protection against predation, but fails to fully utilize heat units and thus to produce a second generation. [source]


Growing up Charismatic: Morality and Spirituality among Children in a Religious Community

The first question has to do with the problem of how charisma can be successfully transferred to the second generation of a prophetic community. The second question has to do with how children come to be, and to act as, moral and spiritual beings. These questions converge in a particular way in the ethnographic setting of The Word of God Community: it is founded on a charismatic spirituality closely intertwined with a moral imperative, such that its viability depends on reproduction of that morality and spirituality among children of the founding generation. Data come from interviews with 38 children across three age groups (5,7, 10,12, and 15,17 years), conducted over a four-week period subsequent to a community schism, which left members in a state of reflection, self-examination, and openness. We focus on children's responses to a series of culturally specific vignettes designed to present various dilemmas of moral reasoning. In this highly charged context moral and spiritual life are based on an active engagement characterized by dynamic and contested processes, and it is through these processes that individuals make meaning out of and reconstruct the moral code of their culture. Basal TSH levels compared with TRH-stimulated TSH levels to diagnose different degrees of TSH suppression: diagnostic and therapeutic impact of assay performance

Abstract Background The estimated prevalence of endogenous subclinical hyperthyroidism varies from 4% to 6% and a basal thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) level < 0·5 mU L,1 may be associated with increased mortality in subjects over 60 years of age who are not on thyroid medication. Exogenous TSH suppression is a mainstay in the treatment of thyroid cancer. Because of recent concerns about potential adverse effects, especially of endogenous TSH suppression on bone, the cardiovascular system and cognitive functions, subclinical hyperthyroidism obtained new clinical importance. We therefore re-evaluated the diagnostic value of basal and thyrotrop in TRH-stimulated serum TSH measurements using TSH assays with different sensitivities. Materials and methods A total of 805 oral and nasal TRH stimulation tests were performed on 409 ambulatory subjects with low basal serum TSH concentrations of less than 0·1 mIU L,1. Basal serum TSH was measured either using a second generation assay (functional sensitivity > 0·03 mIU L,1) or two third generation assays (functional sensitivity 0·01 mIU L,1 and 0·007 mU L,1, respectively). Serum TSH concentration was determined before and 3 h after oral administration of 40 mg of TRH and before and 30 min after nasal administration of 2 mg of TRH. Results In the oral testing group, the basal TSH levels measured by the different TSH assays were 0·06 ± 0·03, 0·04 ± 0·02 and 0·03 ± 0·02, respectively, whereas the peak TSH levels were 0·4 ± 0·6, 0·4 ± 0·6 and 0·3 ± 0·5 in the patients with subclinical hyperthyroidism. In overt hyperthyroidism, the basal TSH levels were 0·06 ± 0·02, 0·03 ± 0·02 and 0·03 ± 0·02, whereas the peak TSH levels were 0·19 ± 0·3, 0·16 ± 0·3 and 0·15 ± 0·2, respectively. Basal TSH values could discriminate between different degrees of TSH suppression if measured with a third generation assay (P < 0·001), but not with a second generation assay. There was only a weak correlation between basal TSH and peak TSH when measured by a second generation assay (n = 126; r = 0·3; P < 0·001) in contrast to the strong correlation found using the third generation assays (n = 128; r = 0·7; P < 0·001 and n = 69; r = 0·8; P < 0·001, respectively). Conclusions In view of the recent concerns about potential adverse effects in TSH suppression and based on our data, it is mandatory to select a TSH assay with a functional sensitivity of , 0·01 mIU L,1 for optimal titration of L-T4 suppressive therapy, especially in patients with thyroid cancer. If, however, only a second generation TSH assay is available, additional TRH testing allows a more careful titration of suppressive thyroxine therapy. [source]


ADVICE OF THE ROSE: EXPERIMENTAL COEVOLUTION OF A TREMATODE PARASITE AND ITS SNAIL HOST

Understanding host-parasite coevolution requires multigenerational studies in which changes in both parasite infectivity and host susceptibility are monitored. We conducted a coevolution experiment that examined six generations of interaction between a freshwater snail (Potamopyrgus antipodarum) and one of its common parasites (the sterilizing trematode, Microphallus sp.). In one treatment (recycled), the parasite was reintroduced into the same population of host snails. In the second treatment (lagged), the host snails received parasites from the recycled treatment, but the addition of these parasites did not begin until the second generation. Hence any parasite-mediated genetic changes of the host in the lagged treatment were expected to be one generation behind those in the recycled treatment. The lagged treatment thus allowed us to test for time lags in parasite adaptation, as predicted by the Red Queen model of host,parasite coevolution. Finally, in the third treatment (control), parasites were not added. The results showed that parasites from the recycled treatment were significantly more infective to snails from the lagged treatment than from the recycled treatment. In addition, the hosts from the recycled treatment diverged from the control hosts with regard to their susceptibility to parasites collected from the field. Taken together, the results are consistent with time lagged, frequency-dependent selection and rapid coevolution between hosts and parasites. [source]

Abstract Pharmacogenetics constitutes a new and growing therapeutic approach in the identification of the predictive factors of the response to antipsychotic treatment. This review aims to summarize recent finding into pharmacodynamic approach of pharmacogenetics of antipsychotics and particularly second generation. Studies were identified in the MEDLINE database from 1993 to July 2008 by combining the following Medical Subject Heading search terms: genetic, polymorphism, single nucleotide polymorphism, pharmacogenetics, antipsychotics, and response to treatment as well as individual antipsychotics names. Only pharmacodynamics studies were analyzed and we focused on efficacy studies. We also reviewed the references of ll identified articles. Most studies follow a polymorphism-by-polymorphism approach, and concern polymorphisms of genes coding for dopamine and serotonin receptors. Haplotypic approach has been considered in some studies. Few have studied the combinations of polymorphisms of several genes as a predictive factor of the response to antipsychotics. We present this gene-by-gene approach while detailing the features of the polymorphisms being studied (functionality, linkage disequilibrium) and the features of the studies (studied treatment(s), prospective/retrospective study, pharmacological dosage). We discuss the heterogeneity of the results and their potential clinical implications and extract methodological suggestions for the future concerning phenotype characterization, genotypes variants studied and methodological and statistical approach. Gastrointestinal effects of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

Abstract Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) causes extensive damage to the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The underlying mechanisms of gastric injury include topical irritant actions that disrupt the epithelial barrier, as well as the inhibition of cyclo-oxygenase (COX), which is predominantly the COX-1 isoform in the mucosa. This damage can be attenuated by antisecretory agents or by mucosal protective agents such as the synthetic prostanoids or nitric oxide (NO) donors. Compounds designed to attenuate topical irritancy, or have protective agents incorporated, such as NO-containing NSAIDs, the CINODs (cyclo-oxygenase-inhibiting NO-donating drugs) show reduced mucosal injury. NSAIDs also cause injury in the small intestine, which appears to result from initial COX inhibition, with subsequent translocation of indigenous bacteria, induction of NO synthase and production of the cytotoxic moiety, peroxynitrite. The COX-2 selective agents, the coxibs, which inhibit prostanoid biosynthesis at inflammatory sites, but not the endogenous protective prostanoids in the gut formed by COX-1, have proved so far to be a successful therapeutic approach to reducing NSAIDs GI damage. The clinical outcome of the use of the second generation of coxibs, and the newer NO NSAIDs is now awaited. [source]


Conceptual models for burrow-related, selective dolomitization with textural and isotopic evidence from the Tyndall Stone, Canada

ABSTRACT The formation of dolomite is generally explained using models that reflect larger-scale processes that describe the relationship between the supply and transport of Mg, and geochemical conditions that are amenable to the formation of dolomite. However, heterogeneities in the substrate, such as those made by bioturbating infauna, may play a more important role in dolomitization than has been previously considered. Burrow-facilitated dolomitization is evident in the Ordovician Tyndall Stone (Red River Group, Selkirk Formation) of central Canada. The diagenetic fabrics present are attributed to dolomitizing fluids that both flowed through and evolved within burrow networks. Petrographic analysis suggests that two phases of dolomite formation took place. The first formed a fine-grained, fabric-destructive type that probably accompanied early burial; the second is a fine- to medium-grained, locally sucrosic dolomite that is interpreted to have precipitated during later burial. Isotopic analysis supports the proposed paragenetic history: (1) an apparent linking of the stable isotopes 13C and 18O strongly suggests that the micrite matrix formed during very early diagenesis and was derived from seawater; (2) the initial phase of dolomitization is potentially microbially mediated, as evidenced by the enrichment of 13C; and (3) isotopic values for the second generation of dolomite reflect the mixing of ground water and resorbed early dolomite. This paper conceptualizes the physical and chemical conditions required for the formation of dolomite in association with burrow fabrics. The proposed model reveals a composite of biological and inorganic reactions that demonstrates the interdependence of sediment fabric, organic content and microbial interactions in the development of burrow-mottled dolomitic limestone. It is suggested that where burrow-associated dolomite occurs, it is most likely to develop in two stages: first, the byproducts of the degradation of organic material in burrows locally increase the permeability and porosity around burrow fabrics in shallow diagenetic depositional environments; and, second, the passing of burrowed media into deeper dysaerobic sediment is accompanied by the establishment of fermenting micro-organisms whose byproducts mediate dolomitization. Local attachments and transnational everyday lives: second-generation Italians in Switzerland

Abstract Many descendants of migrants grow up in the context of lively transnational social relations to their parents' homeland. Among southern Italian migrants in Switzerland, these relations are imbued with the wish to return among the first generation, a dream fostered since the beginning of their migration after the Second World War. Second-generation Italians have developed different ways of negotiating the transnational livelihoods fostered by their parents on the one hand, and the wish for local attachments on the other. In this article I discuss how the children of Italian migrants have created their own cultural repertoires of Italianità and belonging within Switzerland and with co-ethnic peers, and how, for some, this sense of belonging evokes the wish for ,roots migration', the relocation to the parents' homeland. With the example of two trajectories of local attachment and transnationalism among members of the second generation of the same origin, I question existing work on the second generation that assumes commonalities among them on the grounds of ethnicity and region of origin. Vapor Sorption and Electrical Response of Au-Nanoparticle, Dendrimer Composites,

Abstract Films comprising Au nanoparticles and polyphenylene dendrimers (first and second generation) are deposited onto transducer substrates via layer-by-layer self-assembly and characterized by atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Their sorption behavior is studied by measuring the uptake of solvents from the vapor phase with quartz crystal microbalances (QCMs). The resistance of the films is simultaneously monitored. Both sensor types, QCMs and chemiresistors, give qualitatively very similar response isotherms that are consistent with a combination of Henry- and Langmuir-type sorption processes. The sorption-induced increase in relative differential resistance scales linearly with the amount of analyte accumulated in the films. This result is in general agreement with an activated tunneling process for charge transport, if little swelling and only small changes in the permittivity of the film occur during analyte sorption (a first-order approximation). The relative sensitivity of the films to different solvents decreases in the order toluene,,,tetrachloroethylene,>,1-propanol,,,water. Films containing the larger second-generation dendrimers show higher sensitivity than films containing first-generation dendrimers. [source]


The labour market for nursing: a review of the labour supply literature

Abstract The need to ensure adequate numbers of motivated health professionals is at the forefront of the modernisation of the UK NHS. The aim of this paper is to assess current understanding of the labour supply behaviour of nurses, and to propose an agenda for further research. In particular, the paper reviews American and British economics literature that focuses on empirical econometric studies based on the classical static labour supply model. American research could be classified into first generation, second generation and recent empirical evidence. Advances in methods mirror those in the general labour economics literature, and include the use of limited dependent variable models and the treatment of sample selection issues. However, there is considerable variation in results, which depends on the methods used, particularly on the effect of wages. Only one study was found that used UK data, although other studies examined the determinants of turnover, quit rates and job satisfaction. The agenda for further empirical research includes the analysis of discontinuities in the labour supply function, the relative importance of pecuniary and non-pecuniary job characteristics, and the application of dynamic and family labour supply models to nursing research. Arguments, First Empirical Evidence for Labor Migrants in Germany, Statements
In this article, we scrutinize the often stated assumption that labor migrants in Germany turn away from integration and reaffirm their ethnicity by examining their identificational, cognitive, and social assimilation processes. Using data from the German Socio-economic Panel, we present trend analyses of different hostland- and homeland-related indicators for the past fifteen years. Results are presented separately for first- and second-generation migrants from Turkey, the EU, and the former Yugoslavia. While not all assimilation-related indicators change a great deal over time, they show at least a substantial difference between the first and the second generation. With regard to the homeland-related indicators, the results by no means suggest that Turkish migrants try to compensate for their comparatively disadvantaged social status by revitalizing ethnic cultural habits or homeland-oriented identifications. Explaining Ethnic Disparities in Educational Attainment among Immigrants'Children
Understanding why some national-origin groups excel in school while others do not is an enduring sociological puzzle. This paper examines whether the degree of immigrants'educational selectivity - that is, how immigrants differ educationally from non-migrants in the home country - influences educational outcomes among groups of immigrants'children. This study uses published international data and U. S. Census and Current Population Survey data on 32 immigrant groups to show that as immigrants'educational selectivity increases, the college attainment of the second generation also increases. The study of integration processes has now reached a crucial stage in most Western European countries with the emergence of the second generation. The oldest children born to postwar immigrants on European soil have recently entered the job market, and we can now investigate their performance in both education and employment. This opens a unique opportunity to compare the situations of second generation migrants across countries. Ostensibly the children all have the same starting position, being born in the country of settlement. The intriguing question is how differences between immigrant groups, and also differences in national contexts, work to the benefit or detriment of the second generation. We discuss the first issue briefly, confining ourselves here to Turkish and Moroccan immigrants. In addressing the issue of national contexts, we focus primarily on policies and practices rather than on broad-reaching national integration models. We examine in detail the integration process itself in the context of vital institutional arrangements such as the education system and the mechanisms for transition to the labor market. How do such arrangements differ between countries, and how do they affect the outcomes for the second generation? [source]


Young People of Migrant Origin in Sweden

This article surveys immigration during the second part of the twentieth century with the aim of determining the origins of the immigrant population and the socioeconomic position of the second generation. It focuses on migration from Turkey from the 1960s onward. Originally, migration from Turkey was within the framework of labor recruitment. These migrants were predominantly ethnic Turks of rural origin. A second wave of migrants from Turkey was composed of Syriani/Assyrians, a Christian minority from eastern Turkey seeking asylum in the 1970s on the grounds of religious persecution. Since the 1980s, the main intake of migrants from Turkey has been Kurds seeking protection on the grounds of political persecution. Immigration of ethnic Turks and Syriani/Assyrians is restricted to family reunification and family formation; the numbers are low. Kurds, on the other hand, are accepted both on the grounds of refugee claims and family reunification/family formation. The article looks at conditions of growing up in Sweden, with a particular focus on education, mother-tongue classes and instruction in Swedish. Second-generation youth distinguish themselves by an overrepresentation among dropouts from school, but also by an overrepresentation among those who do well academically in comparison with native Swedes. This applies to second-generation youth with family roots in Turkey. Though very few under the age of 18 hold regular employment, the article also discusses the prospects of entering the labor market, based on information from the regular labor market surveys. Unemployment rates are consistently higher for second-generation migrants than for native-born Swedish youth. The article closes with a discussion about the developing multicultural society in Sweden and the niches that second-generation youth tend to occupy. [source]

The German "mode of integration" after World War II has been to include migrants and their offspring into general societal institutions. This can be stated despite differences between federal states in some aspects of migrant integration (e.g., the educational sector). Migrant children normally attend the same schools and classes as their German age peers, they participate in the dual system of vocational training, and there are only a few limitations in labor market access. The second generation in Germany consists mainly of children of the "guestworkers" recruited in southern and southeastern European countries from the 1950s onwards. It is not easy to obtain information about their numbers and their socioeconomic position, as most statistical data distinguish only between foreigners and Germans. The achieved integration status of the second generation varies between areas: obvious problems in the educational system go along with considerable progress in the vocational training system and in the labor market. Educational Attainments of Immigrant Offspring: Success or Segmented Assimilation?,

In this article, I study the educational attainments of the adult offspring of immigrants, analyzing data from the 1996 panel of the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics (SLID). Fielded annually since 1993 by Statistics Canada, respondents are asked for the first time in 1996 to report the birthplaces of their parents, making it possible to define and study not only the foreign-born population (the first generation), but also the second generation (Canadian born to foreign-born parents) and the third-plus generation (Canadian born to Canadian-born parents). The survey also asked respondents to indicate if they are members of a visible minority group, thus permitting a limited assessment of whether or not color conditions educational achievements of immigrant offspring. I find that "1.5" and second generation adults, age 20,64 have more years of schooling and higher percentages completing high school compared with the third-plus generation. Contrary to the segmented "underclass" assimilation model found in the United States, adult visible minority immigrant offspring in Canada exceed the educational attainments of other not-visible-minority groups. Although the analysis is hampered by small sample numbers, the results point to country differences in historical and contemporary race relations, and call for additional national and cross-national research. Assimilation, Ethnic Competition, and Ethnic Identities of U.S.-Born Persons of Mexican Origin

Processes governing the ethnic identification of second and later generations of Mexican immigrant descendants are explored empirically using the Latino National Political Survey, 1989,1990. With multinomial logit regressions, I test hypotheses based on three contrasting perspectives, namely, that ethnic identification, or identification other than "American," arises directly from: a) cultural continuity and a lower level of assimilation; b) an experience of ethnic competition; and c) both processes. The results from the LNPS support the view that both processes are at work. For example, consistent with the presence of an assimilation process, the chance of "Mexican" identification (as opposed to "American" identification) declines to half in the third generation and to one tenth in the fourth and later generations, relative to the chance in the second generation. Consistent with the presence of an ethnic competition process, (perceived) experience of discrimination doubles the respondent's chance of "Mexican" identification. Also, a level rise in the darkness of skin color is associated with a 60 percent increase in the chance of Mexican identification. [source]


Emergency service systems: The use of the hypercube queueing model in the solution of probabilistic location problems

Abstract Probabilistic location problems are surveyed from the perspective of their use in the design of emergency service systems, with special emphasis on emergency medical systems. Pioneering probabilistic models were defined in the 1980s, as a natural extension of deterministic covering models (first generation models) and backup models (second generation). These probabilistic models, however, adopted simplifying assumptions that in many cases do not correspond to real-world situations, where servers usually cooperate and have specific individual workloads. Thus the idea of embedding the hypercube queueing model into these formulations is to make them more adherent to the real world. The hypercube model and its extensions are initially presented in some detail, which is followed by a brief review of exact and approximate methods for its solution. Probabilistic models for the design of emergency service systems are then reviewed. The pioneering models of Daskin and ReVelle and Hogan are extended by embedding the hypercube model into them. Solution methods for these models are surveyed next, with comments on specialized models for the design of emergency medical systems for urban areas and highways. [source]


Life-long protein malnutrition in the rat (Rattus norvegicus) results in altered patterns of craniofacial growth and smaller individuals

Abstract Dietary protein is a limiting factor in mammalian growth, significantly affecting the non-linear trajectories of skeletal growth. Young females may be particularly vulnerable to protein malnutrition if the restriction is not lifted before they become reproductive. With such early malnutrition, limited amino acids would be partitioned between two physiological objectives, successful reproduction vs. continued growth. Thus, the consequences of protein malnutrition could affect more than one generation. However, few studies have quantified these cross-generational effects. Our objective was to test for differences in skeletal growth in a second generation of malnourished rats compared with rats malnourished only post-weaning, the first generation and with controls. In this longitudinal study we modelled the growth of 22 craniofacial measurements with the logistic Gompertz equation, and tested for differences in the equation's parameters among the diet groups. The female offspring of post-weaning malnourished dams did not catch up in size to the first generation or to controls, although certain aspects of their craniofacial skeleton were less affected than others. The second generation's growth trajectories resembled the longer and slower growth of the first malnourished generation. There was a complex interaction between developmental processes and early nutritional environment, which affected variation of adult size. [source]


A practical method for predicting the short-time trend of bivoltine populations of Ips typographus (L.) (Col., Scolytidae)

Abstract:,Ips typographus is the main spruce pest of European forests. In most areas of the Italian Alps there are two generations per year; overwintering adults fly in May looking for trees suitable for breeding, their offspring emerge in summer, 7,8 weeks after tree colonization, and the adults of the second generation emerge in spring of the following year after overwintering under the bark or in the litter. A long-term population monitoring was carried out in north-east Italy with the aim at developing a prediction model able to estimate the population density of the following year. Between 1996 and 2004, pheromone traps monitored populations of I. typographus annually. Monitoring lasted 4 months (May,August), with replacement of pheromone dispensers after 8 weeks. Insects trapped before dispenser change were called ,spring captures' (May,June), and included both overwintering and re-emerging adults. Beetles caught after dispenser change were called ,summer captures' (July,August), and included the adults of the first generation. The results show a high positive correlation between the ratio of summer and spring captures of one year (Summerx/Springx), and the ratio of total captures of the following year (Yx+1) and those of the current year (Yx) (Yx+1/Yx). Summerx/Springx lower than 0.62 indicate decreasing populations in the following year (Yx+1/Yx <1), whereas Summerx/Springx higher than 0.62 indicate increasing populations (Yx+1/Yx >1). The applicability of the model in the study of I. typographus risk of outbreak and in the forest management is discussed. The prediction of the short-time trend of the population allows assessing its density in the following year, and therefore the risk of outbreak. [source]


Field efficacy of transgenic cotton containing single and double toxin genes against the Asian corn borer (Lep., Pyralidae)

Abstract:, Insect resistant transgenic cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is expected to provide satisfactory control of lepidopteran species in the cotton field. The Asian corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenée) (Lep., Pyralidae), is an important component of the lepidopteran pest complex of cotton in China. Insect resistant transgenic cotton cultivars GK2, carrying cry1A gene, and SGK321, carrying both cry1A and CpTI genes, were evaluated for resistance to Asian corn borer. Field trials were conducted with artificial infestation of Asian corn borer at squaring, flowering and flowering-boll cotton plants, which coincided with the generations of natural Asian corn borer occurrence. Damage ratings were significantly reduced in transgenic cotton cultivars both GK2 and SGK321 compared with their parental non-transgenic cotton cultivars Simian3 and Shiyuan321, respectively. In addition, percentage of plants stem bored and number of tunnels per plant were significantly higher on GK2 than on SGK321 in the second generation. Laboratory bioassays were carried out by exposing neonates to plant tissues collected from the field. Tissues assayed included the new leaves, match-head squares and white flowers, which are the tissues initially attacked by the neonates in the field. Low larval survival rates were observed on SGK321 and GK2, contrasting greatly to the high number of survivors found on their non-transgenic cotton tissue isolated throughout the season. However, larval survival was higher on new leaves isolated from late-season transgenic cotton plants and fruit tissues than on early-season. In addition, higher larval survival was observed on GK2 than SGK321 in assays with the late season tissues. This may be associated with reduced levels of available toxin in plant tissues as they age. Both laboratory and field data indicated that SGK321 and GK2 were highly resistant to Asian corn borer. The high level of efficacy for insect resistant transgenic cotton against Asian corn borer offers the potential for season-long control. [source]


Challenges of antiangiogenic cancer therapy: trials and errors, and renewed hope

However, in spite of the promising preclinical results, a first generation of antiangiogenic compounds yielded poor results in clinical trials. Conceptual errors and mistakes in the design of trials and in the definition of clinical end-points could account for these negative results. In this context of discouraging results, a second generation of antiangiogenic therapies is showing positive results in phases II and III trials at the beginning of the twenty-first century. In fact, several combined treatments with conventional chemotherapy and antiangiogenic compounds have been recently approved. The discovery and pharmacological development of future generations of angiogenesis inhibitors will benefit from further advances in the understanding of the mechanisms involved in human angiogenesis. New styles of trials are necessary, to avoid missing potential therapeutic effects. Different clinical end-points, new surrogate biomarkers and methods of imaging will be helpful in this process. Real efficacy in clinical trials may come with the combined use of antiangiogenic agents with conventional chemotherapy or radiotherapy, and combinations of several antiangiogenic compounds with different mechanisms of action. Finally, the existing antiangiogenic strategies should include other approaches such as vascular targeting or angioprevention. [source]


Second Generation Models of Currency Crises

Until the beginning of the 1990s, currency crises were typically analyzed within the framework of a generation of models that assumed that the foreign exchange reserves of a country that was running a fixed exchange rate policy were falling (because the government was running a deficit on its budget that was financed by printing money). When the foreign exchange reserves reached a lower bound, a speculative attack on the fixed exchange rate was launched. Today, this theory is no longer the benchmark when explaining the occurrence of a currency crisis. Actually, a new generation of models that seeks to take explicitly into account the costs and benefits associated with the maintenance of a fixed exchange rate has emerged. This paper surveys these ,second generation models of currency crises'. This generation of models emphasizes that it is an endogenous decision if a government chooses to abandon a policy of fixed exchange rates. The survey pays special attention to the fact that the second generation of currency crises models often generates multiple equilibria for the rate of devaluation given one state of the economic fundamentals. A currency crisis can thus occur even if no secular trend in economic fundamentals can be identified, as in recent currency crises. [source]


Consumer response to functional foods produced by conventional, organic, or genetic manipulation

The agro-food industry is developing a "second generation" of genetically modified (GM) foods that can offer functional health benefits to consumers. Many consumers, however, are turning to organic foods in order to avoid GM foods. This report attempts to differentiate consumer valuation of functional health properties in conventional, organic, and GM foods. A representative sample of 1,008 Canadian household food shoppers responded to twelve stated-choice experiments during a telephone survey. Because opinions about organic and GM foods varied greatly, random parameters logit models were used to analyze their choices. Results indicate that many Canadian consumers will avoid GM foods, regardless of the presence of functional health properties. For others, the introduction of GM functional plant foods should increase acceptance of GM production methods, but many consumers will likely avoid functional foods derived from GM animals.
