mtDNA perspective of chromosomal diversification and hybridization in Peters' tent-making bat (Uroderma bilobatum: Phyllostomidae)

Abstract We compared sequence variation in the complete mitochondrial cytochrome -b gene with chromosomal and geographical variation for specimens of Peters' tent-making bat (Uroderma bilobatum). Three different chromosomal races have been described in this species: a 2n = 42 race from South America east of the Andes, a 2n = 44 from NW Central America and 2n = 38 from the rest of Central America and NW South America. The deepest nodes in the tree were found within the South American race (42 race), which is consistent with a longer history of this race. Average distance among races ranged from 2.5 to 2.9%, with the highest amount of intraracial variation found within the 2n = 42 race (1.7%), intermediate values within the 2n = 38 race (0.9%) and lowest within the 2n = 44 race (0.5%). Variation among chromosomal races accounted for over 55% of molecular variance, whereas variation among populations within races accounted for 6%. The 2n = 38 and 2n = 44 races hybridize in the coastal lowlands of Honduras, near the Gulf of Fonseca. Introgression between these two races is low (two introgressed individuals in 45 examined). Clinal variation across the hybrid zone for the cytochrome -b of U. bilobatum, is similar to clinal variation reported for chromosomes and isozymes of this species. Mismatch distribution analyses suggests that geographical isolation and karyological changes have interplayed in a synergistic fashion. Fixation of the alternative chromosomal rearrangements in geographical isolation and secondary contact is the most likely mechanism accounting for the hybrid zone between the 2n = 38 and 2n = 44 races. If a molecular clock is assumed, with rates ranging from 2.3 to 5.0% per million years, then isolation between these races occurred within the last million years, implying a relatively recent origin of the extant diversity in Uroderma bilobatum. None the less, the three chromosomal races probably represent three different biological species. [source]


Regularity of species richness relationships to patch size and shape

This study aims to assess the degree of regularity in the effect of patch size and patch shape on plant species richness across a macroscale region, and to evaluate the implications for nature conservation. Our study area covers south-eastern Norway and contains 16 agricultural landscapes with 2162 patches. To analyse regularity a local linear mixed model (LLMM) was applied. This procedure estimates the richness trends due to shared effects of size and shape, and simultaneously provides the landscape-specific random effect. The latter is a direct estimate of the degree of irregularity between the landscapes, conditioned on specific values of size and shape. The results show a positive interaction between the shape and size of patches, which is repeated for all landscapes. The shape of the patches produces more regular patterns in species richness than the size of patches. This we attribute to effects of dispersal and distance to neighbouring patches of different environmentally conditioned species pools. Large and complex patches have shorter average distance to neighbouring patches (of different types) than large simple-shaped (circular) patches have. We attribute the higher species richness of the former, given a similar area, to a higher number of species dispersed from the outside into the more complex plot. For small patches, however, the distance to the edge is short relative to normal dispersal distances, for patches of all shapes. This explains why the positive effect of shape complexity on species richness is stronger for large patches. This interpretation is supported by a strong spatial correlation conditioned on the most complex patches. Theories of dynamics in biodiversity in patchy landscapes must consider shape as a regulator at the same level as size, and both shape and size of patches should be simultaneously taken into account for management planning. Survival, movement, and resource use of the butterfly Parnassius clodius

Abstract., 1. A mark,recapture study was conducted on the American Apollo butterfly Parnassius clodius Menetries during three field seasons (1998,2000) to examine its movement patterns over the course of a season within a sagebrush meadow in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, U.S.A. The study examined how resources affected butterfly distribution patterns and used mark,recapture data to gain insight into movement differences between sexes and over time. 2. The average straight-line movement of P. clodius was 202 m day,1, adjusted for sampling effort at different distances. Movement estimates in all 3 years were highly correlated with the average distance between plots sampled. 3. Butterfly abundance was correlated positively with per cent cover of its host plant Dicentra uniflora, but this relationship decreased in importance during the peak of the flight period when individuals may be more interested in finding mates. There was a weak, positive correlation between butterfly abundance and the abundance of its primary nectar source, Eriogonum umbellatum in 1999, but no relationship in 2000. 4. Survival, recapture, and transition probabilities were estimated using open population, capture,recapture models. Survival and recapture probability decreased over the course of each season, while the probability of moving between plots increased. Recapture probability was significantly lower for females than for males among all 3 years, but there was no difference between the sexes in survival rate. [source]


Selection of hibernation sites by Anthonomus pomorum: preferences and ecological consequences

Abstract The apple blossom weevil, Anthonomus pomorum (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), has a long period of aestivo-hibernation in the adult stage lasting from summer to early spring of the following year. Potential hibernation sites within an apple orchard consist of high-stem rough-bark trees or dwarf smooth-bark trees. Field release-recapture experiments in 2 consecutive years showed that 64 and 47% of the weevils remained in the vicinity of the release sites in an area of high-stem trees and dwarf trees, respectively. The dispersing weevils moved over an average distance of 5.5 m in the dwarf tree area, as compared to 3.8 m in the high-stem tree area. The prevalent direction of dispersal was along tree rows in both areas. Some weevils displayed, after release in mid-July, a directional dispersal to the adjacent forests. Others, released in the dwarf tree area, dispersed towards the area of high-stem rough-bark apple trees. Experiments simulating various hibernation sites demonstrated that the litter of dry leaves was the most preferred overwintering shelter, yielding a relatively high survival rate. Branches with rough bark ranked second, while branches with smooth bark, grass and pure soil were not favourable for overwintering. Flight tendency in newly emerged weevils of summer generation was significantly higher in June/July than in August/September. This corresponds to the dispersal behaviour in the field. The timing of spring colonisation of apple trees was similar for weevils overwintering within the orchard and for those from outside. These results suggest that modern, dwarf apple orchards offer unfavourable conditions for overwintering, but that the relatively small proportion of weevils which manage to reach the adjacent forests find optimal hibernation sites there. DNA damage and repair measurements from cryopreserved lymphocytes without cell culture,A reproducible assay for intervention studies

Abstract Single-cell gel electrophoresis (the Comet assay) can be used to measure DNA damage and DNA repair capacity (DRC). However, to test DRC of cryopreserved lymphocytes, published methods include steps for cell culturing and phytohemagglutinin stimulation, which may limit use of this assay in intervention studies. We developed a modified Comet assay protocol that allows us to measure DRC from cryopreserved lymphocytes without these in vitro manipulations. Assay reproducibility was evaluated by performing the assay six times on different dates using six aliquots from one blood draw of one individual. The interindividual variation was assessed by performing the assay using one aliquot from six individuals. When ,-irradiation was used as the mutagen, intra-assay coefficients of variation (CVs.) for baseline DNA damage, damage after ,-irradiation exposure, and DRC,measured as tail moment,were 8, 31, and 10%, respectively. Interindividual CVs. were higher. When H2O2 was used as the mutagen, intra-assay CVs. for damage measurements were lower for a protocol modification that included damage and repair at 37°C (CVs. ranging from 8 to 35%) than for the more standard 4°C protocol. Analyzing moment arm,the average distance of DNA migration within the tail,yielded similar results. DNA repair was successfully detected in each experiment. Comparing freshly isolated lymphocytes to cryopreserved lymphocytes from the same individuals' blood draw indicated that DRC was highly correlated when determined using moment arm values. This modified protocol extends the use of the Comet assay to measuring DRC in intervention studies (e.g., dietary interventions) in that it assesses cellular response after cryopreservation without cell culture or other extensive manipulation. Spatial Association in a Highly Inbred Ungulate Population: Evidence of Fine-Scale Kin Recognition

We present the first evidence of fine-scale kin recognition, based on a continuous measure of relatedness, in ungulates. The spatial association between herdmates of a captive population of aoudad (Ammotragus lervia), where all the individuals are related, is analysed during resting time. Our goal was to estimate which factors influence individuals' associations. The study population is highly inbred, although it does not show serious deleterious effects caused by consanguinity. It comprises a single captive herd, reproducing freely and in good conditions for more than 10 yr. It emerges that kin, measured as the coefficient of relationship between two given herdmates, is the main factor determining the spatial association (e.g. average distance) of male,male and female,female dyads, as more-related individuals tend to rest closer to each other than less-related ones. As for male,female dyads, individuals of a similar age tend to stay closer. To rule out any familiarity confounding effects, individuals' cohabitation time in the herd was added as a random factor in the analyses. Concerning the type of dyad, mother,calf dyads are characterized by higher proximity than others, particularly during the suckling period, whereas males tend to stay closer to each other than females or male,female dyads, being also more kin-related. Female social rank does not influence spatial association between herdmates. These results are related to group composition of the species in the wild, which are characterized by intense mother,calf bonds and all-male groups that are probably kin-related. It is seen that adult male,female associations are not related to kinship, but to age similarity, which is in accord with the assumption that main family groups in the wild are formed by matrilineal lines, whereas males are the dispersing sex. Natal Dispersal Patterns of a Subsocial Spider Anelosimus cf. jucundus (Theridiidae)

Species that alternate periods of solitary and social living may provide clues to the conditions that favor sociality. Social spiders probably originated from subsocial-like ancestors, species in which siblings remain together for part of their life cycle but disperse prior to mating. Exploring the factors that lead to dispersal in subsocial species, but allow the development of large multigenerational colonies in social species, may provide insight into this transition. We studied the natal dispersal patterns of a subsocial spider, Anelosimus cf. jucundus, in Southeastern Arizona. In this population, spiders disperse from their natal nests in their penultimate and antepenultimate instars over a 3-mo period. We tracked the natal dispersal of marked spiders at sites with clustered vs. isolated nests. We found that most spiders initially dispersed less than 5 m from their natal nests. Males and females, and spiders in patches with different densities of nests, dispersed similar distances. The fact that both sexes in a group dispersed, the lack of a sex difference in dispersal distance, and the relatively short distances dispersed are consistent with the hypothesis that natal dispersal results from resource competition within the natal nest, rather than inbreeding avoidance in competition for mates. Additionally, an increase in the average distance dispersed with time and with the number of spiders leaving a nest suggests that competition for nest sites in the vicinity of the natal nest may affect dispersal distances. The similar distances dispersed in patches with isolated vs. clustered nests, in contrast, suggest that competition among dispersers from different nests may not affect dispersal distances. Order Distance in Regular Point Patterns

This article examines the kth nearest neighbor distance for three regular point patterns: square, triangular, and hexagonal lattices. The probability density functions of the kth nearest distance and the average kth nearest distances are theoretically derived for k=1, 2, ,, 7. As an application of the kth nearest distance, we consider a facility location problem with closing of facilities. The problem is to find the optimal regular pattern that minimizes the average distance to the nearest open facility. Assuming that facilities are closed independently and at random, we show that the triangular lattice is optimal if at least 68% of facilities are open by comparing the upper and lower bounds of the average distances. El siguiente artículo examina la distancia de los k-vecinos más cercanos en látices cuadrados, triangulares y hexagonales. La funciones de densidad de probabilidad para las distancias k-más próximas y para las k-promedio más próximas son derivadas teóricamente para k=1,2,,7. Con el fin de demostrar una aplicación de la distancia k-más próxima los autores utilizan un ejemplo de localización y clausura de instalaciones. El objetivo es identificar el patrón regular óptimo que minimice la distancia promedio a la instalación abierta más cercana. Bajo el supuesto que las instalaciones cierran independientemente y aleatoriamente, y comparando los límites extremos superiores e inferiores de las distancias promedio, los autores demuestran que el patrón triangular es el óptimo si es que por lo menos 68 por ciento de las instalaciones permanecen abiertas. Trends in aquatic macrophyte species turnover in Northern Ireland , which factors determine the spatial distribution of local species turnover?

ABSTRACT Aim, The study examined qualitative predictions of ecological theories in relation to the spatial distribution of species turnover of aquatic macrophytes, through the following parameters: (1) distance between lakes (2) chemical conditions of the lakes (3) chemical differences between the lakes, and (4) the lake size. Location, 562 lakes dispersed throughout Northern Ireland were analysed. Methods, To obtain species turnover estimates independent of richness, the average distance between focal lakes and their five nearest neighbours in ordination space (DCA) was standardized by the species richness in a Generalized Additive Model (GAM). The relationships between species turnover and ecological (chemical condition, chemical difference, distance between lakes, and lake-size) and geographical parameters (latitude, longitude, and altitude) were analysed using GAM. Results, The results indicate that the pattern in species turnover is a combination of the chemical conditions and the distance between the lakes, including the interaction term. The effects of chemical heterogeneity and lake size parameters were both positive but weak. In general, increased distance and decreased ionic concentration contribute to increased turnover. The influence of distance on species turnover is strongest at low and high altitude, and at mid-elevation the species turnover is mainly driven by the chemical conditions. Towards the north there is an increasing influence of distance, whereas in the south the chemical conditions have their strongest influence. Conclusions, There is a need for components from several established ecological theories to explain the spatial trends in species turnover within Northern Ireland. Central theories in this particular study are the population/metapopulation dynamics, the continuum concept, and the species-pool concept. [source]


Post-fledging behaviour in Golden Eagles Aquila chrysaetos: onset of juvenile dispersal and progressive distancing from the nest

Thirteen juvenile Golden Eagles Aquila chrysaetos were tracked during their first year of life using satellite telemetry. Distances to the nest attained during that period and the age at the onset of juvenile dispersal were explored. The performance of nine different criteria to determine that age was analysed. In general, after a brief period of restricted movements around the nest, the average distance to the nest increased with time. Maximum distances to the nest ranged between 57.7 and 184.3 km, and were considerably greater in females (mean ± sd, 138.5 ± 44.5 km) than in males (70.5 ± 14.0 km). No sex difference was observed in the age at which that distance was attained (males: 329 ± 32 days, females: 312 ± 20 days). The onset of juvenile dispersal took place around the fifth month of life (September in Spain). Eight of the nine criteria provided similar results, suggesting that in Spain dispersal starts when birds are between 140 and 180 days old, and that the post-nestling period lasts between 60 and 120 days. For future studies, to determine the age at which the onset of juvenile dispersal occurs, we recommend the use of either the first day on which individuals were located beyond the mean distance between nests of different pairs (10 km in our study area), or the date of the record midway between the first and the last location recorded during the month in which the maximum variability in the distance to the nest was observed. Theoretical study of NMR chemical shift induced by H/D isotope effect

Abstract The isotope effect induced by deuterium substituted species is observed in molecular properties, such as geometry, kinetics, and electronic state, of the molecules through nuclear-electron interaction. Theoretical considerations and experimental alignments have been studied by ab initio molecular orbital, density functional theory, and other empirical strategies. The Born-Oppenheimer approximation with nuclear vibrational wavefunction can treat isotope effect because nuclear mass effect account for the average distance of vibrational motion. In this study, we introduce Morse anharmonic oscillator model to calculate average internuclear distance of diatomic molecules having X-H bonding and X-D bonding. Morse parameters are determined by fitting to potential energy surface of molecular orbital and/or density functional calculations, and then the average distance are obtained as the expectation value of the analytical Morse vibrational wavefunction. Application of harmonic radar technology to monitor tree snail dispersal

Abstract. Planned conservation efforts for tree snails of the endangered genus Achatinella, endemic to the island of O'ahu, Hawai'i, will include translocations among the remaining wild and captive-bred populations. In order to establish optimal levels of artificial migration among neighboring groups of snails within fragmented populations, efforts to determine natural dispersal rates through direct observation were initiated. Capture,mark,recapture (CMR) efforts have proved inadequate for obtaining the requisite dispersal estimates, due to low recapture probabilities. In addition, snail dispersal beyond the boundaries of a finite CMR study site was indistinguishable from mortality. In the preliminary study reported here, both the low recapture probability and dispersal detection problems of past CMR efforts were addressed by using harmonic radar tracking. This approach yielded rough dispersal estimates that were unattainable using CMR alone by providing 100% recapture rates even beyond the normal survey area boundaries. Extensive snail movements within clusters of connected trees were frequently observed after tracking for merely a few hours, although movements between unconnected trees were rare and recorded only after monthly survey intervals. Just 11 out of 40 tracked snails made between-tree movements (average distance of 4.94±1.52 m) during the entire 7-month study, and provided the only data utilizable for inferring gene flow in and out of subpopulations. Meteorological data loggers were deployed when tracking began to look for an association between such snail movement and weather fluctuations. The resultant data indicate that increases in both wind gusts and humidity facilitate dispersal (R2=0.77, p-value <0.001), and that passive wind dispersal alone may be responsible for many snail movements (R2=0.59, p-value=0.0014). Despite having provided coarse estimates of short-term dispersal and corresponding wind influences, the limitations of the radar method can be substantial. [source]


A Genetic Map Constructed Using a Doubled Haploid Population Derived from Two Elite Chinese Common Wheat Varieties

Abstract Genetic mapping provides a powerful tool for the analysis of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) at the genomic level. Herein, we report a new genetic linkage map developed from an F1 -derived doubled haploid (DH) population of 168 lines, which was generated from the cross between two elite Chinese common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) varieties, Huapei 3 and Yumai 57. The map contained 305 loci, represented by 283 simple sequence repeat (SSR) and 22 expressed sequence tag (EST)-SSR markers, which covered a total length of 2141.7 cM with an average distance of 7.02 cM between adjacent markers on the map. The chromosomal locations and map positions of 22 new SSR markers were determined, and were found to distribute on 14 linkage groups. Twenty SSR loci showed different chromosomal locations from those reported in other maps. Therefore, this map offers new information on the SSR markers of wheat. This genetic map provides new opportunities to detect and map QTLs controlling agronomically important traits. The unique features of this map are discussed. [source]


Genetic Mapping of Magnaporthe grisea Avirulence Gene Corresponding to Leaf and Panicle Blast Resistant QTLs in Jao Hom Nin Rice Cultivar

Abstract The avirulence characteristic of Magnaporthe grisea isolate TH16 corresponding to Jao Hom Nin (JHN) rice cultivar was studied by mapping population of 140 random ascospore progenies derived from the cross between B1-2 and TH16 isolates. Segregation analyses of the avirulence characteristic performing on JHN rice at the seedling and flowering stages were performed in this mapping population. We used the reference map of Guy11/2539 to choose microsatellite DNA markers for mapping the avirulence gene. The genetic map of this population was constructed from 39-microsatellite markers. The genetic map was spanned by covering seven chromosomes with an average distance of 11.9 cM per marker. In mapping population the distribution of pathogenic and non-pathogenic progenies on JHN rice were found to be fitted to 1 : 1 ratio for two of the rice stages, seedling and flowering stages. The Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) analysis for avirulence genes corresponding to two rice stages were located at the same region on chromosome 2 between markers Pyms305 and Pyms435. The LOD score and percentage of phenotypic variance explained (PVE) on two rice stages were 5.01/16.69 and 6.73/20.26, respectively. These loci were designated as Avr-JHN(lb) and Avr-JHN(pb) corresponding to leaf and panicle blast characteristics. The findings of this study can be the initial step for positional cloning and identifying any function of avirulence genes corresponding to leaf and panicle blast characteristics. [source]


GROUPWISE MODELING STUDY OF BACTERIALLY IMPAIRED WATERSHEDS IN TEXAS: CLUSTERING ANALYSIS,

ABSTRACT: Under the Clean Water Act (CWA) program, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) listed 110 stream segments in the year 2000 with pathogenic bacteria impairment. A study was conducted to evaluate the probable sources of pollution and characterize the watersheds associated with these impaired water bodies. The primary aim of the study was to group the water bodies into clusters having similar watershed characteristics and to examine the possibility of studying them as a group by choosing models for total maximum daily load (TMDL) development based on their characteristics. This approach will help to identify possible sources and determine appropriate models and hence reduce the number of required TMDL studies. This in turn will help in reducing the effort required to restore the health of the impaired water bodies in Texas. The main characteristics considered for the classification of water bodies were land use distribution within the watershed, density of stream network, average distance of land of a particular use to the closest stream, household population, density of on-site sewage facilities (OSSFs), bacterial loading from different types of farm animals and wildlife, and average climatic conditions. The climatic data and observed instream fecal coliform bacteria concentrations were analyzed to evaluate seasonal variability of instream water quality. The grouping of water bodies was carried out using the multivariate statistical techniques of factor analysis/principal component analysis, cluster analysis, and discriminant analysis. The multivariate statistical analysis resulted in six clusters of water bodies. The main factors that differentiated the clusters were found to be bacterial contribution from farm animals and wildlife, density of OSSFs, density of households connected to public sewers, and land use distribution. Genetic diversity assessment of anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria by distance-based grouping analysis of pufM sequences

Abstract Aim:, To assess how completely the diversity of anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria (APB) was sampled in natural environments. Methods and Results:, All nucleotide sequences of the APB marker gene pufM from cultures and environmental clones were retrieved from the GenBank database. A set of cutoff values (sequence distances 0·06, 0·15 and 0·48 for species, genus, and (sub)phylum levels, respectively) was established using a distance-based grouping program. Analysis of the environmental clones revealed that current efforts on APB isolation and sampling in natural environments are largely inadequate. Analysis of the average distance between each identified genus and an uncultured environmental pufM sequence indicated that the majority of cultured APB genera lack environmental representatives. Conclusions:, The distance-based grouping method is fast and efficient for bulk functional gene sequences analysis. The results clearly show that we are at a relatively early stage in sampling the global richness of APB species. Periodical assessment will undoubtedly facilitate in-depth analysis of potential biogeographical distribution pattern of APB. Significance and Impact of the Study:, This is the first attempt to assess the present understanding of APB diversity in natural environments. The method used is also useful for assessing the diversity of other functional genes. [source]


Phenotypic characteristics of rhizobia isolates nodulating Acacia species in the arid and Saharan regions of Morocco

The phenotypic characteristics of 48 isolates obtained from root nodules of four Acacia species (Acacia cyanophylla, A. gummifera, A. horrida and A. raddiana) growing in soils collected from the arid and Saharan regions of Morocco were studied. The rhizobia were very diverse with respect to their cross-nodulation patterns, as well as their physiological and biochemical properties. Dendrograms obtained through computer numerical analysis of 52 phenotypic characteristics showed that isolates could fit into four clusters below the boundary level of 0·85 average distance and that they were very distinct from the reference strains. Some interesting isolates for inoculation trials have been identified. They were able to grow at pH ranging from 4 to 9, tolerate a high salt concentration (3% NaCl) and grew at a maximum temperature between 35 and 40 °C. [source]

Abstract Molecular brushes, with side chains consisting of two copolymers: 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate with methyl methacrylate, and N,N -dimethylacrylamide with butyl acrylate were prepared by grafting-from via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Poly(2-(2-bromoisobutyryloxy)ethyl methacrylate) and poly(2-(2-bromopropionyloxy)ethyl methacrylate) were used as macroinitiators. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) studies were performed for aqueous solutions of molecular brushes below and above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST), and an unusual concentration-dependent LCST was observed. Due to the compact structure of molecular brushes, intramolecular collapse can occur when the average distance between molecules is much larger than the hydrodynamic dimensions of the individual macromolecules. However, if the concentration of the solution of molecular brushes is increased to the level in which the separation distance is comparable with the brush hydrodynamic dimensions, intermolecular aggregation occurs, as typically observed for solutions of linear polymers. A method of identifying and locating sea-breeze fronts in north-eastern Brazil by remote sensing

Abstract A method of identifying sea-breeze fronts by remote sensing (visible and infrared data from the GOES-8 satellite) was applied to north-eastern Brazil. The aim of the study was to estimate the frequency of observed sea-breeze fronts and the average distance they penetrate inland at 1800 UTC. During the dry season (between September and December) in 2000, the highest frequency of sea-breeze fronts was recorded on the northern fringe of the study area. The sea-breeze fronts penetrated furthest inland between September and November, with a maximum distance from the coast at Ceará of 100 km. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source]


Land clearing reduces gene flow in the granite outcrop-dwelling lizard, Ctenophorus ornatus

Abstract An important question for the conservation of species dwelling in fragmented habitats is whether changes to the intervening landscape create a barrier to gene flow. Here, we make use of the spatial distribution of the granite outcrop-dwelling lizard, Ctenophorus ornatus, to compare inferred levels of gene flow between outcrops in a nature reserve with that between outcrops in the adjacent agricultural land. Genetic variation, relatedness and subdivision were compared within groups of individuals from different outcrops similar in size and distance apart at each site. In the agricultural land, we found significantly lower genetic variation within outcrops and greater genetic differentiation between outcrops than in the reserve. Further, the rate at which genetic divergence between outcrops increased over geographical distance was significantly greater in the agricultural land than in the reserve. We also found that individuals were more closely related within outcrops but more distantly related between outcrops in the cleared land. These effects occur over a small spatial scale with an average distance between outcrops of less than five kilometres. Thus, even though land clearing around the outcrops leaves outcrop size unchanged, it restricts gene flow, reducing genetic variation and increasing population structure, with potentially negative consequences for the long-term persistence of the lizards on these outcrops. Are Complex A and the Orphan stream related?

ABSTRACT We consider the possibility that the Galactic neutral hydrogen stream Complex A and the stellar Orphan stream are related, and use this hypothesis to determine possible distances to Complex A and the Orphan stream, and line-of-sight velocities for the latter. The method presented uses our current knowledge of the projected positions of the streams, as well as line-of-sight velocities for Complex A, and we show that a solution exists in which the two streams share the same orbit. If Complex A and the Orphan stream are on this orbit, our calculations suggest the Orphan stream to be at an average distance of 9 kpc, with heliocentric radial velocities of approximately ,95 km s,1. Complex A would be ahead of the Orphan stream in the same wrap of the orbit, with an average distance of 4 kpc, which is consistent with the distance constraints determined through interstellar absorption line techniques. A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO SCALE-FREE NETWORKS

ABSTRACT. This article provides a brief introduction to scale-free networks. The notion of a scale-free network is defined and some examples given. Properties frequently exhibited by scale-free networks are discussed. The importance of the phenomenon of preferential attachment in generating scale-free networks is illustrated with two examples for the spread of a persistent disease. The models are similar in that they both yield a total infected population (1) which is geometrically distributed, and growing exponentially in expectation; and (2) in which the average distance from the original source of infection grows in a similar way over time. However one model, which has preferential attachment (infection), yields a scale-free network, while the other which has homogeneous infectivity does not. The possible application of the theory of scale-free networks to resource management is briefly discussed. [source]


Efficient algorithms for centers and medians in interval and circular-arc graphs

Abstract The p -center problem is to locate p facilities on a network so as to minimize the largest distance from a demand point to its nearest facility. The p -median problem is to locate p facilities on a network so as to minimize the average distance from a demand point to its closest facility. We consider these problems when the network can be modeled by an interval or circular-arc graph whose edges have unit lengths. We provide, given the interval model of an n vertex interval graph, an O(n) time algorithm for the 1-median problem on the interval graph. We also show how to solve the p -median problem, for arbitrary p, on an interval graph in O(pn log n) time and on a circular-arc graph in O(pn2 log n) time. We introduce a spring representation of the objective function and show how to solve the p -center problem on a circular-arc graph in O(pn) time, assuming that the arc endpoints are sorted. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Fuel demand and car ownership modelling in India

Motorisation in Asia is soaring with rapid growth in incomes non-lin-early. Even though car ownership per 1,000 population is still low in countries like China, India or Indonesia, escalating number of cars is affected by GDP growth among other infrastructural factors in a non-linear manner. This quick growth in car ownership may represent a significant implication on road transport fuel demand. This paper forecasts the demand for road transport fuel in India. For this purpose, econometric models, based on time series data, are constructed as for a major factor affecting fuel demand in road transportation i.e. car ownership. Firstly the econometric car ownership model was attempted in this study, for projecting future car stock in India based on cross section time series technique. The car stock is modelled by using three functional forms, which are the logistic, quasi-logistic and Gompertz curves. However, to take into consideration countries with different income levels in that part of the world, these models were estimated by using pooled data of seven Asian countries (Japan, China, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and India). Then, a set of fuel consumption scenarios were developed in order to make forecast until 2030. These scenarios were generated by taking into consideration car stock, fuel efficiency and the average distance travelled in India. [source]


Analyses of RAPD data for detection of host specialization in Sclerotinia homoeocarpa

Upgma analysis, principal component analysis, genetic diversity analysis and genetic distance analysis of RAPD data were used to assess the extent of host specialization in 50 isolates of S. homoeocarpa from five turfgrass hosts. In upgma analysis and principal component analysis, the occurrence of host specialization was not readily apparent based on visual inspection. Genetic diversity analysis showed significant differentiation among isolates from different host species (GST = 0.34, P < 0.001). The strongest evidence for some degree of host specialization came from the statistical analysis of genetic distances among isolates. By grouping pairwise genetic distances between isolates based on their host species, and analysing for average distance within the same host species and among different host species, it was found that the average distance within species was less than among species (P < 0.0001). An analysis of molecular variance of the genetic distances among isolates found that 32.3% of the total variation was attributable to host species. It is concluded that these isolates of S. homoeocarpa showed a weak level of host specialization, which was not readily apparent by upgma or principal component analyses, but was revealed by genetic diversity analysis and statistical analysis of genetic distances among isolates. Inoculation tests on different host species and tests using a greater number of isolates are required to confirm the extent of specialization. [source]


Haze of polyethylene films,effects of material parameters and clarifying agents

Effects of material parameters on the haze of blown films were analyzed. Four linearlow-density polyethylenes (two metallocene grades and two Ziegler-Natta grades) were studied in combination with three additives (two sorbitol-based clarifying agents and a low-molecular-weight long-chain branched polyethylene). One of the sorbitol-based additives reduced the haze of both the metallocene materials in this study, but did not have any positive effect on the two Ziegler-Natta materials. The variation in haze among the four base materials was directly related to the root-mean-square surface roughness (,). When considering all 16 material/additive combinations, the link between haze and surface topography was not a simple ,-haze relationship, but the haze was correlated with the average distance between adjacent surface profile peaks, the average slope, and the power spectral density at high lateral frequencies. Both of the mechanisms referred to in the literature, extrusion-induced haze and crystallization-induced haze, were probably active for the films in this study. [source]


Approximating average parameters of graphs,,

Abstract Inspired by Feige (36th STOC, 2004), we initiate a study of sublinear randomized algorithms for approximating average parameters of a graph. Specifically, we consider the average degree of a graph and the average distance between pairs of vertices in a graph. Since our focus is on sublinear algorithms, these algorithms access the input graph via queries to an adequate oracle. We consider two types of queries. The first type is standard neighborhood queries (i.e., what is the ith neighbor of vertex v?), whereas the second type are queries regarding the quantities that we need to find the average of (i.e., what is the degree of vertex v? and what is the distance between u and v?, respectively). Loosely speaking, our results indicate a difference between the two problems: For approximating the average degree, the standard neighbor queries suffice and in fact are preferable to degree queries. In contrast, for approximating average distances, the standard neighbor queries are of little help whereas distance queries are crucial. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Random Struct. Capitalized amenity value of urban wetlands: a hedonic property price approach to urban wetlands in Perth, Western Australia,

Up to 60 per cent of potable water supplied to Perth, Western Australia, is extracted from the groundwater system that lies below the northern part of the metropolitan area. Many of the urban wetlands are groundwater-dependent and excessive groundwater extraction and climate change have resulted in a decline in water levels in the wetlands. In order to inform decisions on conserving existing urban wetlands, it is beneficial to be able to estimate the economic value of the urban wetlands. Applying the Hedonic Property Price approach to value urban wetlands, we found that distance to the nearest wetland and the number of wetlands within 1.5 km of a property significantly influence house sales price. For a property that is 943 m away from the nearest wetland, which is the average distance to the wetland in this study, reducing the wetland distance by 1 m will increase the property price by AU$42.40. Similarly, the existence of an additional wetland within 1.5 km of the property will increase the sales price by AU$6976. For a randomly selected wetland, assuming a 20 ha isolated circular wetland surrounded by uniform density housing, the total sales premium to surrounding properties was estimated to be around AU$140 million (AU$40 million and AU$230 million). Pharmacokinetic study on the mechanism of interaction of sulfacetamide sodium with bovine serum albumin: a spectroscopic method

Abstract The binding of sulfacetamide sodium (SAS) to bovine serum albumin (BSA) was investigated by spectroscopic methods, namely fluorescence, FT-IR and UV-vis absorption spectral studies. The binding parameters were evaluated by a fluorescence quenching method. The thermodynamic parameters, ,H0, ,S0and ,G0 were observed to be ,49.03,k,J,mol,1, ,99.9,J,K,1,mol,1 and ,18.96,k,J,mol,1, respectively. These indicated that the hydrogen bonding and weak van der Waals forces played major roles in the interaction. Based on Förster's theory of non-radiation energy transfer, the binding average distance, r, between the donor (BSA) and acceptor (SAS) was evaluated and found to be 3.72,nm. The spectral results showed that binding of SAS to BSA induced conformational changes in BSA. Strategy for selecting and characterizing linker peptides for CBM9-tagged fusion proteins expressed in Escherichia coli

Abstract The influence of linker design on fusion protein production and performance was evaluated when a family 9 carbohydrate-binding module (CBM9) serves as the affinity tag for recombinant proteins expressed in Escherichia coli. Two bioinformatic strategies for linker design were applied: the first identifies naturally occurring linkers within the proteome of the host organism, the second involves screening peptidases and their known specificities using the bioinformatics software MEROPSÔ to design an artificial linker resistant to proteolysis within the host. Linkers designed using these strategies were compared against traditional poly-glycine linkers. Although widely used, glycine-rich linkers were found by tandem MS data to be susceptible to hydrolysis by E. coli peptidases. The natural (PT)xP and MEROPSÔ-designed S3N10 linkers were significantly more stable, indicating both strategies provide a useful approach to linker design. Factor Xa processing of the fusion proteins depended strongly on linker chemistry, with poly(G) and S3N10 linkers showing the fastest cleavage rates. Luminescence resonance energy transfer studies, used to measure average distance of separation between GFP and Tb(III) bound to a strong calcium-binding site of CBM9, revealed that, for a given linker chemistry, the separation distance increases with increasing linker length. This increase was particularly large for poly(G) linkers, suggesting that this linker chemistry adopts a hydrated, extended configuration that makes it particularly susceptible to proteolysis. Differential scanning calorimetry studies on the PT linker series showed that fusion of CBM9 to GFP did not alter the Tm of GFP but did result in a destabilization, as seen by both a decrease in Tm and ,Hcal, of CBM9. The degree of destabilization increased with decreasing length of the (PT)xP linker such that ,Tm,=,,8.4°C for the single P linker. Biotechnol.
