Selected AbstractsProsthetic treatment of maxillary lateral incisor agenesis with osseointegrated implants: a 24,39-month prospective clinical studyCLINICAL ORAL IMPLANTS RESEARCH, Issue 1 2006Fernando Zarone Abstract Objectives: The present study aimed at evaluating the marginal bone resorption and the peri-implant tissue conditions around Narrow-Neck ITI implants in the implant,prosthetic treatment of the agenesis of maxillary lateral incisors. Material and methods: Thirty patients affected by monolateral or bilateral agenesis of the maxillary lateral incisors were selected. Thirty-four ITI-SLA Narrow Neck implants were inserted and loaded about 4 months after the surgical procedure. The final restorations were realized using Aureo Galvan Crowns veneered with feldspathic ceramics. The follow-up period ranged from 24 to 39 months. Both marginal bone resorption and soft tissue quality were evaluated. The data were statistically analysed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) for repeated measures, one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test (P=0.05). Results: During the 24,39-month follow-up period, no implant showed either pain and sensitivity or mobility. After 39 months of functional loading, a cumulative survival rate of 97.06% and a cumulative success rate of 94.12% were calculated. Conclusions: In case of maxillary lateral incisor agenesis, the implant,prosthetic approach has proved to be a reliable and predictable treatment for both re-establishment of function and aesthetics. Satisfactory values of marginal bone resorption over time and optimal conditions of peri-implant tissue around Narrow-Neck ITI implants were found. [source] Applicability of an abbreviated version of the oral impacts on daily performances (OIDP) scale for use among Tanzanian studentsCOMMUNITY DENTISTRY AND ORAL EPIDEMIOLOGY, Issue 1 2003J. R. Masalu Abstract , Objectives: The objective was to examine the applicability of an abbreviated version of the oral impact of daily performances (OIDP) inventory to Tanzanian adults attending the University of Dar es Salaam. Method: A total of 1123 students (mean age 26.4 years, response rate 58%) completed a survey instrument designed to measure subjective oral health indicators including the eight-item OIDP frequency scores. After a period of 4 weeks, 228 students (mean age 24.6 years, response rate 65%) were examined clinically for the presence or absence of oral disorders. Results: A total of 51% of the participants reported that an oral problem had affected them on at least one daily performance in the 6 months preceding the survey. Cronbach's alpha for the OIDP frequency items was 0.83 and 0.87 on the first and second administration of the questionnaire. A reliability coefficient (Spearman's rho) of 0.87 was obtained for the OIDP frequency scores. For five of the eight OIDP frequency items, the kappa values ranged from 0.60 to 1.0, whereas one scale item had the less satisfactory value of 0.22. Construct validity was demonstrated in that the OIDP frequency scores were statistically significantly associated in the expected direction with clinically observed oral problems and a global self-report indicator of oral health status, respectively. Conclusion: The OIDP frequency scale seems to have acceptable psychometric properties in the context of a descriptive questionnaire survey among Tanzanian university students. [source] Fast CE analysis of adrenergic amines in different parts of Citrus aurantium fruit and dietary supplementsJOURNAL OF SEPARATION SCIENCE, JSS, Issue 16 2010Laura Mercolini Abstract A CE method has been developed for the simultaneous analysis of the adrenergic amines synephrine, octopamine and tyramine in Citrus aurantium (bitter orange) fruit extracts and in dietary supplements. The analytes were separated on a fused silica capillary (50,,m id, 40.0,cm effective length, 48.5,cm total length) using a BGE composed of phosphate buffer (pH 2.5, 50,mM) and applying a 30,kV potential. The samples were injected hydrodynamically at 50,mbar for 25,s. The use of photodiode array detection (,=195,nm) allowed the quantification of the analytes and the control of peak purity. The method has been fully validated, obtaining satisfactory values of precision and extraction yield. The analytes are extracted with water from the dried whole fruits or fruit parts (endocarp, mesocarp and exocarp) or from the commercial formulations and directly injected into the CE apparatus. The results obtained were satisfactory in terms of precision (RSD <,5.7%) and accuracy (recovery >,89%). Thus, the method has demonstrated to be suitable for the qualitative and quantitative determination of synephrine, octopamine and tyramine in C. aurantium extracts, for dietary supplement quality control and for food adulteration identification. [source] Effects of organic fertilisers and irrigation level on physical and chemical quality of industrial tomato fruit (cv. Nautilus)JOURNAL OF THE SCIENCE OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE, Issue 15 2009Ramón Madrid Abstract BACKGROUND: The objective of this work was to study the influence of irrigation and organic fertilisation on quality attributes of tomato fruit (cv. Nautilus) grown for the canning industry. The assay was carried out during two consecutive years (2006 and 2007) in agricultural soil. Nine treatments resulting from the combination of three fertilisation types (sheep manure, a mixture of sheep manure and peat and an inorganic fertiliser (control)) with three levels of drip irrigation (3.30, 5.00 and 6.70 mm day,1) under black polyethylene mulch were applied (n = 3). RESULTS: For the chromatic attributes L*, H*, C* and S* the highest values corresponded to the treatments with organic matter. However, the a*/b* ratio and colour index value were higher for the control treatment. In all cases the estimated optimal ripening time was the same, and on this date a decline in the ratios was observed. The values of the physical properties increased with increasing irrigation, higher values always being obtained in the treatments with organic fertilisers. The highest production for all irrigation levels corresponded to the treatment with mixed sheep manure and peat fertiliser. CONCLUSION: Cultivation involving fertilisation with the manure/peat mixture and an irrigation level slightly above 5.00 mm day,1 can be recommended as optimal, since it gave the most satisfactory values with respect to the quality attributes of tomato fruit grown for the canning industry.
