Effect of sampling interval and temperature on the accuracy of food consumption estimates from stomach contents

The effect of temperature and sampling interval on the accuracy of food consumption estimates based on stomach contents was studied using simulation. Three temporal patterns of feeding were considered (scattered throughout the day, one 5 h period or two 5 h periods) and gastric evacuation was modelled according to published values. Sampling intervals of 3 h gave reasonable food consumption estimates (2 to 19% error) at all temperatures. Comparably, sampling intervals as large as 12 h gave reasonable estimates of food consumption (1 to 20% error) when temperature was set to ,10° C. At temperatures <5° C, even 24 h intervals (equivalent to one daily sampling) provided reasonable estimates of daily food consumption (2 to 19% error) for all but the highest gastric evacuation rate combined with one daily feeding period (47% error). The temperature effect on estimation error resulted from diminishing temporal fluctuations in stomach contents with slower gastric evacuation rates. It follows that sampling effort may be considerably minimized when estimating food consumption from stomach contents during periods with low temperatures such as the winter time experienced by temperate fishes. Processes controlling rapid temperature variations on rock surfaces,

Abstract In arid environments, thermal oscillations are an important source of rock weathering. Measurements of temperature have been made on the surface of rocks in a desert environment at a sampling interval of 0·375,s, with simultaneous measurements of wind speed, air temperature, and incoming shortwave radiation. Over timescales of hours, the temperature of the rock surface was determined primarily by shortwave radiation and air temperature, while rapid temperature variations, high dT/dt, at intervals of seconds or less, were determined by wind speed. The maximum values of temperature change and time spent above 2°C,min,1 increased at high measurement rates and were much higher than previously reported. The maximum recorded value of dT/dt was 137°C,min,1 and the average percentage time spent above 2°C,min,1 was ,70 ± 13%. Maximum values of dT/dt did not correlate with the maximum values of time spent above 2°C,min,1. Simultaneous measurements of two thermocouples 5·5,cm apart on a single rock surface had similar temperature and dT/dt values, but were not correlated at sampling intervals of less than 10,s. It is suggested that this is resulting from rapid fluctuations due to small spatial and timescale wind effects that are averaged out when data is taken at longer sampling intervals, ,10,s or greater. Scale dependence of diversity measures in a leaf-litter ant assemblage

A reliable characterization of community diversity and composition, necessary to allow inter-site comparisons and to monitor changes, is especially difficult to reach in speciose invertebrate communities. Spatial components of the sampling design (sampling interval, extent and grain) as well as temporal variations of species density affect the measures of diversity (species richness S, Buzas and Gibson's evenness E and Shannon's heterogeneity H). Our aim was to document the small-scale spatial distribution of leaf litter ants in a subtropical dry forest of the Argentinian Chaco and analyze how the community characterization was best achieved with a minimal sampling effort. The work was based on the recent standardized protocol for collecting ants of the leaf litter ("A.L.L.": 20 samples at intervals of 10 m). To evaluate the consistency of the sampling method in time and space, the selected site was first subject to a preliminary transect, then submitted after a 9-month interval to an 8-fold oversampling campaign (160 samples at interval of 1.25 m). Leaf litter ants were extracted from elementary 1 m2 quadrats with Winkler apparatus. An increase in the number of samples collected increased S and decreased E but did not affect much H. The sampling interval and extent did not affect S and H beyond a distance of 10 m between samples. An increase of the sampling grain had a similar effect on S than a corresponding increase of the number of samples collected, but caused a proportionaly greater increase of H. The density of species m,2 varied twofold after a 9-month interval; the effect on S could only be partially corrected by rarefaction. The measure of species numerical dominance was little affected by the season. A single standardized A.L.L. transect with Winkler samples collected <45% of the species present in the assemblage. All frequent species were included but their relative frequency was not always representative. A log series distribution of species occurrences was oberved. Fisher's , and Shannon's H were the most appropriate diversity indexes. The former was useful to rarefy or abundify S and the latter was robust against sample size effects. Both parametric and Soberón and Llorente extrapolation methods outperformed non-parametric methods and yielded a fair estimate of total species richness along the transect, a minimum value of S for the habitat sampled. Using spatial models and kriging techniques to optimize long-term ground-water monitoring networks: a case study

Abstract In a pilot project, a spatial and temporal algorithm (geostatistical temporal,spatial or GTS) was developed for optimizing long-term monitoring (LTM) networks. Data from two monitored ground-water plumes were used to test the algorithm. The primary objective was to determine the degree to which sampling, laboratory analysis, and/or well construction resources could be pared without losing key statistical information concerning the plumes. Optimization of an LTM network requires an accurate assessment of both ground-water quality over time and trends or other changes in individual monitoring wells. Changes in interpolated concentration maps over time indicate whether ground-water quality has improved or declined. GTS separately identifies temporal and spatial redundancies. Temporal redundancy may be reduced by lengthening the time between sample collection. Spatial redundancy may be reduced by removing wells from the network which do not significantly impact assessment of ground-water quality. Part of the temporal algorithm in GTS involves computation of a composite temporal variogram to determine the least redundant overall sampling interval. Under this measure of autocorrelation between sampling events, the lag time at which the variogram reaches a sill is the sampling interval at which same-well measurements lack correlation and are therefore non-redundant. The spatial algorithm assumes that well locations are redundant if nearby wells offer nearly the same statistical information about the underlying plume. A well was considered redundant if its removal did not significantly change: (i) an interpolated map of the plume; (ii) the local kriging variances in that section of the plume; and (iii) the average global kriging variance. To identify well redundancy, local kriging weights were accumulated into global weights and used to gauge each well's relative contribution to the interpolated plume map. By temporarily removing that subset of wells with the lowest global kriging weights and re-mapping the plume, it was possible to determine how many wells could be removed without losing critical information. Test results from the Massachusetts Military Reserve (MMR) indicated that substantial savings in sampling, analysis and operational costs could be realized by utilizing GTS. Discovery of the causeway and the mortuary temple of the Pyramid of Amenemhat II using near-surface magnetic investigation, Dahshour, Giza, Egypt

ABSTRACT The main outbuildings of the Amenemhat II pyramid complex in Dahsour were yet to be discovered due to a very long subjection of the area to the military authorities and also the demolition of the pyramid itself. We describe the discovery of some of these outbuildings using near-surface magnetic investigations. A gradiometer survey was conducted in the area east of the pyramid to measure the vertical magnetic gradient with a high resolution instrument at 0.5 m sampling interval. The data showed some undesirable field effects such as grid discontinuities, grid slope, traverse stripe effects, spikes and high frequencies originating from recent ferrous contamination. These undesirable effects were addressed to produce an enhanced display. We have successfully detected four main structures in the area east of the pyramid; the causeway that connected the mortuary temple with the valley temple during the Middle Kingdom of the 12th Dynasty, the mortuary temple and its associated rooms, ruins of an ancient working area and an Egyptian-style tomb structure called a Mastaba. An improved recognition for these structures was accomplished by using the analytic signal and Euler deconvolution techniques. Excavation of a small part within the study area has proven the reliability of magnetic discoveries and the shallowness and composition of the detected features. [source]


Relationship between sampling intensity and precision for estimating damage to maize caused by rodents

Abstract In this study we aimed to determine the relationship between sampling intensity and precision for estimating rodent damage. We used the systematic row sampling technique to provide data to achieve precision and accuracy in estimations of rodent damage in maize fields at the planting and seedling stages. The actual rodent damage to maize in 15 fields, each 0.5 ha in size, in Morogoro, Tanzania, was established at the seedling stage. These data were used to simulate the sampling intensities that would provide precision and accuracy. The variations between estimates were plotted against the sampling intervals. The results of this study show that the relationship between average standardized variances and sampling intervals is linear. The heterogeneous distribution of damage in some plots caused variations in the accuracy of the estimates between plots, but a sampling interval of five rows consistently produced estimates with a variance of less than 10%. We provide a standard curve that will allow a decision to be made on the sampling intensity as a function of required precision using the systematic row sampling technique in maize fields. [source]


Market Price of Risk: A Comparison among the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and Japan,

ABSTRACT This study examines and compares the market price of risk of the S&P 500, FTSE 100, All Ordinaries, and Nikkei 225 markets from 1984 to 2009 in the framework of Intertemporal Capital Asset Pricing Model (ICAPM). We follow the Vector Autoregressive instrumental variable approach in identifying the risk and hedge components of market returns and argue that in the context of market integration, covariance with a world market portfolio is a better measure of market risk than conditional market variance. Evidence is documented in support of using covariance as a risk measure in explaining market risk premiums in the Australian and Japanese markets. CAY, the consumption wealth ratio from the US market is found to be a robust state variable that helps to explain both conditional variance and covariance processes in the four markets. The market prices of risk, after controlling for the hedging demands, are positive and significant with the United States having the highest price of risk. The results are confirmed using a series of robustness tests that include varying the sampling interval. [source]


Monitoring cascade processes using VSI EWMA control charts

We construct variable sampling interval (VSI) EWMA and EWMA control charts to effectively monitor the input variable and the output variable produced by a cascade process. Numerical analysis results demonstrate that the performance of the VSI control charts is much better than the fixed sampling interval (FSI) control charts in detecting small and median shifts. Nefopam hydrochloride compatibility and stability with selected proton pump inhibitors in bionolyte G5 injection for intravenous infusion

Summary Background:, The use of extemporaneously prepared admixtures of drugs must be supported by documentation of their chemical stability. Objective:, To assess the physical compatibility and the chemical stability of nefopam hydrochloride, a centrally acting non-opioid analgesic, when admixed with selected proton pump inhibitors (omeprazole, esomeprazole or pantoprazole), in bionolyte G5 injection for intravenous infusion. Method:, Admixtures were assessed for periods of up to 72 h after storage at ambient temperature without protection from light and at +4 °C protected from light. A preparation was considered stable if the compounds of the mixture retained at least 90% of their original potency during the storage. Triplicate samples of nefopam and the selected proton pump inhibitors as well as the following mixtures (nefopam/omeprazole, nefopam/esomeprazole and nefopam/pantoprazole) were prepared in the concentrations required, in polypropylene bottles of bionolyte G5 injection. The physical compatibility was assessed by visual observation at each sampling interval. The chemical stability of the drugs was evaluated by high-performance liquid chromatography and by measurement of pH values. Results:, During refrigerated storage, nefopam as well as the selected proton pump inhibitors, when prepared separately in bionolyte G5 injection maintained chemical stability for up to 7 days. At ambient storage conditions, the protons pump inhibitors maintained chemical stability for 24 h, but thereafter their concentrations decreased significantly at day 1. Nefopam maintained chemical stability for up to 72 h at +25 °C. Nefopam/omeprazole and nefopam/esomeprazole mixtures in bionolyte were physically incompatible with the mixtures exhibiting a black colour. They underwent rapid and extensive loss, making the combination unacceptable within minutes of mixing. However, the nefopam/pantoprazole mixture was compatible over the study period, but with a reduced duration of the stability. Conclusion:, Within the limits defined above, nefopam and the selected proton pump inhibitors may be prepared separately in advance in bionolyte G5 injection. The nefopam/pantoprazole mixture was stable for a short period, while the nefopam/omeprazole and the nefopam/esomeprazole mixtures were incompatible and unusable, immediately upon admixture. Effect of input excitation on the quality of empirical dynamic models for type 1 diabetes

Abstract Accurate prediction of future blood glucose trends has the potential to significantly improve glycemic regulation in type 1 diabetes patients. A model-based controller for an artificial ,-cell, for example, would determine the most efficacious insulin dose for the current sampling interval given available input,output data and model predictions of the resultant glucose trajectory. The two inputs most influential to the glucose concentration are bolused insulin and meal carbohydrates, which in practice are often taken simultaneously and in a specified ratio. This linear dependence has adverse effects on the quality of linear dynamic models identified from such data. On the other hand, inputs with greater degrees of excitation may force the subject into extreme hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia, and thus may be clinically unacceptable. Fluoride ion diffusion from a glass,ionomer cement

The aims of this study were to observe the release of fluoride ions (F,) from GC-Fuji Lining-LC® glass,ionomer cement, to assess the diffusion process, and to measure fluoride diffusivity (D) in the set cement. Specimens of various dimensions and shapes, ranging from discs to cylindrical rods, were fabricated for both open and embedded modes of testing. In the open mode studies, specimens with different surface to volume ratios were selected and immersed in 37 °C distilled water. In the embedded mode studies, only one diametral surface of the rod-shaped specimens of different lengths and diameters was exposed. F, concentration was measured using a fluoride electrode. The storage solution was analysed at predetermined intervals hourly, daily, and weekly (up to 10 weeks). Immediately after each sampling, the old storage solution was discarded and replaced with new distilled water. F, release from the set cements was detectable (0·4,3·8 ppm, varied with sample geometry), even after a 10-week sampling interval. F, release was greater in ground set cements (0.37 ppm/mg powder) than in control samples of unmixed powder (0.01 ppm/mg powder) immersed for 1 h. Two mechanisms for F, release were proposed. One was short-term and involved rapid dissolution from the cement surface. The other was more gradual and resulted in the sustained diffusion of ions through the bulk cement, which can be modelled by applying a mathematical technique known as separation of variables to Fick's Second Law of Diffusion. The mean D of F, in embedded set cements of glass,ionomer was (1·4±0·5)×10,11 cm2/s, with higher apparent D observed in open mode samples [(7·6±1·4)×10,11 cm2/s]. [source]


Validation of limited sampling strategy for the estimation of mycophenolic acid exposure in Chinese adult liver transplant recipients

Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) is indicated as immunosuppressive therapy in liver transplantation. The abbreviated models for the estimation of mycophenolic acid (MPA) area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) have been established by limited sampling strategies (LSSs) in adult liver transplant recipients. In the current study, the performance of the abbreviated models to predict MPA exposure was validated in an independent group of patients. A total of 30 MPA pharmacokinetic profiles from 30 liver transplant recipients receiving MMF in combination with tacrolimus were used to compare 8 models' performance with a full 10 time-point MPA-AUC. Linear regression analysis and Bland-Altman analysis were used to compare the estimated MPA-AUC0-12h from each model against the measured MPA-AUC0-12h. A wide range of agreement was shown when estimated MPA-AUC0-12h was compared with measured MPA-AUC0-12h, and the range of coefficient of determination (r2) was from 0.479 to 0.936. The model based on MPA pharmacokinetic parameters C1h, C2h, C6h, and C8h had the best ability to predict measured MPA-AUC0-12h, with the best coefficient of determination (r2 = 0.936), the excellent prediction bias (2.18%), the best prediction precision (5.11%), and the best prediction variation (2SD = ±7.88 mg · h/L). However, the model based on MPA pharmacokinetic sampling time points C1h, C2h, and C4h was more suitable when concerned with clinical convenience, which had shorter sampling interval, an excellent coefficient of determination (r2 = 0.795), an excellent prediction bias (3.48%), an acceptable prediction precision (14.37%), and a good prediction variation (2SD = ±13.23 mg · h/L). Measured MPA-AUC0-12h could be best predicted by using MPA pharmacokinetic parameters C1h, C2h, C6h, and C8h. An efficient gridding reconstruction method for multishot non-Cartesian imaging with correction of off-resonance artifacts

Abstract An efficient iterative gridding reconstruction method with correction of off-resonance artifacts was developed, which is especially tailored for multiple-shot non-Cartesian imaging. The novelty of the method lies in that the transformation matrix for gridding (T) was constructed as the convolution of two sparse matrices, among which the former is determined by the sampling interval and the spatial distribution of the off-resonance frequencies and the latter by the sampling trajectory and the target grid in the Cartesian space. The resulting T matrix is also sparse and can be solved efficiently with the iterative conjugate gradient algorithm. It was shown that, with the proposed method, the reconstruction speed in multiple-shot non-Cartesian imaging can be improved significantly while retaining high reconstruction fidelity. More important, the method proposed allows tradeoff between the accuracy and the computation time of reconstruction, making customization of the use of such a method in different applications possible. Functional perfusion imaging using continuous arterial spin labeling with separate labeling and imaging coils at 3 T

Abstract Functional perfusion imaging with a separate labeling coil located above the common carotid artery was demonstrated in human volunteers at 3 T. A helmet resonator and a spin-echo echo-planar imaging (EPI) sequence were used for imaging, and a circular surface coil of 6 cm i.d. was employed for labeling. The subjects performed a finger-tapping task. Signal differences between the condition of finger tapping and the resting state were between ,0.5% and ,1.1 % among the subjects. The imaging protocol included a long post-label delay (PLD) to reduce transit time effects. Labeling was applied for all repetitions of the functional run to reduce the sampling interval. Data quality in thermal summation development models for forensically important blowflies

Abstract. To highlight some issues regarding data quality that are significant in estimating post-mortem intervals (PMI) from maggots, the developmental constants of thermal summation models for development of Chrysomya megacephala Fabricius (Diptera: Calliphoridae) were calculated from incidental data gathered from 12 published studies, and from data generated specifically for the purpose in a single experiment. The focused experiment involved measuring the timing of five developmental landmarks at nine constant temperatures with a sampling resolution of 6,12 h, which is characteristic of other published studies. Combining data from different studies produced inconsistent results because of statistical noise introduced by (at least) disparities in temporal precision, descriptive statistics, geographical location and rearing diets. A robust experimental design to estimate a developmental model should involve at least six constant temperatures, starting at about 7°C above the relevant developmental zero (D0) and going almost to the upper critical temperature, and a temporal sampling interval with a relative precision of about 10%, which requires sampling about every 2 h until hatching, about every 3 h until first ecdysis and about every 6 h until second ecdysis. Physical properties of rocks from the upper part of the Yaxcopoil-1 drill hole, Chicxulub crater

Thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, density, and porosity were measured on 120 dry and water-saturated rocks with a core sampling interval of 2,2.5 m. Nondestructive, non-contact optical scanning technology was used for thermal property measurements including thermal anisotropy and inhomogeneity. Supplementary petrophysical properties (acoustic velocities, formation resisitivity factor, internal surface, and hydraulic permeability) were determined on a selected subgroup of representative samples to derive correlations with the densely measured parameters, establishing estimated depth logs to provide calibration values for the interpretation of geophysical data. Significant short- and long-scale variations of porosity (1,37%) turned out to be the dominant factor influencing thermal, acoustic, and hydraulic properties of this post impact limestone formation. Correspondingly, large variations of thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, acoustic velocities, and hydraulic permeability were found. These variations of physical properties allow us to subdivide the formation into several zones. A combination of experimental data on thermal conductivity for dry and water-saturated rocks and a theoretical model of effective thermal conductivity for heterogeneous media have been used to calculate thermal conductivity of mineral skeleton and pore aspect ratio for every core under study. The results on thermal parameters are the necessary basis for the determination of heat flow density, demonstrating the necessity of dense sampling in the case of inhomogeneous rock formations. Organic-walled dinoflagellate cyst production in relation to upwelling intensity and lithogenic influx in the Cape Blanc region (off north-west Africa)

SUMMARY Fossil dinoflagellate cyst assemblages are increasingly used in paleoclimatic research to establish paleoenvi-ronmental reconstructions. To obtain reliable reconstructions, it is essential to know which physical factors influence the cyst production. Most information about the relationship between variations in physical parameters and cyst production is known from middle and higher latitudes. Information from the (sub)tropics is rare. To increase this information, the temporal variation in cyst assemblages from the upwelling area off north-west Africa (off Mauritania) has been compared to environmental conditions of the upper water column. Samples were collected by the sediment trap CB9, off north-west Africa (Cape Blanc, 21°15,2,N, 20°42,2,W) between 11 June 1998 and 7 November 1999 at 27.5-day intervals. Off Cape Blanc, upwelling occurs throughout the year with variable intensity. This region is also characterized by frequently occurring Saharan dust storms. Seasonal variations in dust input, upwelling intensity and sea surface temperature are reflected by the production of organic-walled dinoflagellate cyst assemblages. Several cyst taxa are produced throughout the sampling interval, with the highest fluxes at times of strongest upwelling relaxation and/or dust input (Echinidinium aculeatum Zonneveld, Echini-din ium delicatum Zonneveld, Echinidinium granulaturn Zonneveld, Echinidinium spp., Impagidinium aculeatum (Wall) Lentin et Williams, Impagidinium sphaeri-cum (Wall) Lentin et Williams, Protoperidinium americanum (Gran et Braarud) Balech, Protoperidinium stellatum (Wall in Wall et Dale) Rochon etal., Protoperidinium spp., Selenopemphix nephroides (Benedek) Benedek et Sarjeant and Selenopemphix quanta (Bradford) Matsuoka). Species such as, for example, Bitectatodinium spongium (Zonneveld) Zonneveld et Jurkschat and Impagidinium patulum (Wall) Stover et Evitt do not show any production pattern related to a particular season of the year or to specific environmental conditions in the upper water column. Optimal Design of VSI ,X Control Charts for Monitoring Correlated Samples

Abstract This paper develops an economic design of variable sampling interval (VSI),X control charts in which the next sample is taken sooner than usual if there is an indication that the process is off-target. When designing VSI,X control charts, the underlying assumption is that the measurements within a sample are independent. However, there are many practical situations that violate this hypothesis. Accordingly, a cost model combining the multivariate normal distribution model given by Yang and Hancock with Bai and Lee's cost model is proposed to develop the design of VSI charts for correlated data. An evolutionary search method to find the optimal design parameters for this model is presented. Also, we compare VSI and traditional ,X charts with respect to expected cost per unit time, utilizing hypothetical cost and process parameters as well as various correlation coefficients. The results indicate that VSI control charts outperform the traditional control charts for larger mean shift when correlation is present. High Numbers of Naked Amoebae in the Planktonic Waters of a Mangrove Stand in Southern Florida, USA

ABSTRACT. This is the first study to examine the abundance of naked amoebae in the water column of a mangrove stand. A total of 37 different morphotypes was noted and at least 13 of these are probably new species. Over a one-year sampling interval, amoebae averaged 35,400 cells liter,1 (range 2,000,104,000) by an indirect enrichment cultivation method. Densities in the upper end of this range arc the highest ever reported for any planktonic habitat. Variation between samples was related to the quantity of suspended aggregates (floes) in the water column emphasizing that amoebae are usually floc-associated. The study also showed that it is essential to disrupt floc material prior to withdrawing sample aliquots for the indirect counting method since several amoebae can occupy the interstices of aggregates. There is concern that indirect enumeration methods that require organisms to be cultured in the laboratory seriously underestimate the true count. A direct counting method using acridine orange staining and epifluorescence microscopy was attempted to assess the possible magnitude of the error associated with indirect counting. While this direct method had limitations, notably the difficulty of unambiguously differentiating between small amoebae and nanoflagellates, the results suggested that the indirect method gave estimates that were close to the true count (within a factor of two). Mangrove waters are rich in heterotrophic protozoa (,3 × 106 liter1) and while the heterotrophic flagellates are by far the dominant group, naked amoebae outnumber ciliates some 20-foid. The ecological consequences of high numbers of amoebae, particularly the common small forms less than 10 ,m in length, need to be examined for these important coastal sites. [source]


Increased anterior chamber penetration of topical levofloxacin 0.5% after pulsed dosing in cataract patients

Abstract. Purpose:, This study aimed to investigate the rise in aqueous humour (AH) levels of levofloxacin after a specific perioperative pulsed topical drop regimen. Methods:, Thirty patients undergoing phacoemulsification surgery were administered two preoperative drops of levofloxacin 0.5%, 30 mins apart, and three pulsed drops postoperatively, 5 mins apart. Aqueous humour levels of levofloxacin were measured at the start of surgery and from 5 mins to 90 mins after the last postoperative drop. Samples from individual patients were collected at the time of surgery and at one additional sampling interval by aqueous tap, and analysed using a high-performance liquid chromatography assay. Results:, Aqueous humour levels of levofloxacin continued to rise gradually, reaching a mean peak level (Cmax) of 4.4 ,g/ml (± 2.5) at 60 mins after the last postoperative drop was administered. This level exceeded the minimum inhibitory concentration of common ocular pathogens at least fourfold. At 90 mins after the last drop, mean AH levels remained > 3 ,g/ml. Conclusions:, This is the first study to measure AH levels of levofloxacin after postoperative pulsed dosing in humans. Higher AH levels were found than in previously reported studies in which only preoperative drops were given and levels were measured at the time of surgery. Levels of levofloxacin continued to rise for 60 mins after administration of the last postoperative drop, demonstrating that delivery and maintenance of effective antibiotic levels may be achievable with alternative dosing schedules. Abstract In arid environments, thermal oscillations are an important source of rock weathering. Measurements of temperature have been made on the surface of rocks in a desert environment at a sampling interval of 0·375,s, with simultaneous measurements of wind speed, air temperature, and incoming shortwave radiation. Over timescales of hours, the temperature of the rock surface was determined primarily by shortwave radiation and air temperature, while rapid temperature variations, high dT/dt, at intervals of seconds or less, were determined by wind speed. The maximum values of temperature change and time spent above 2°C,min,1 increased at high measurement rates and were much higher than previously reported. The maximum recorded value of dT/dt was 137°C,min,1 and the average percentage time spent above 2°C,min,1 was ,70 ± 13%. Maximum values of dT/dt did not correlate with the maximum values of time spent above 2°C,min,1. Simultaneous measurements of two thermocouples 5·5,cm apart on a single rock surface had similar temperature and dT/dt values, but were not correlated at sampling intervals of less than 10,s. It is suggested that this is resulting from rapid fluctuations due to small spatial and timescale wind effects that are averaged out when data is taken at longer sampling intervals, ,10,s or greater. High,frequency financial data are not only discretely sampled in time but the time separating successive observations is often random. We analyze the consequences of this dual feature of the data when estimating a continuous,time model. In particular, we measure the additional effects of the randomness of the sampling intervals over and beyond those due to the discreteness of the data. We also examine the effect of simply ignoring the sampling randomness. We find that in many situations the randomness of the sampling has a larger impact than the discreteness of the data. [source]


Sampling Strategies for Volatile Organic Compounds at Three Karst Springs in Tennessee

The influence of different sampling strategies on characterizing volatile organic compound (VOC) concentrations and estimating VOC loads was evaluated at three karst springs in Tennessee. During a 6-month period, water samples for VOC analyses were collected weekly at all three springs and as frequently as every 20 min during storms at the two springs with variable water quality conditions. Total 6-month loads for selected VOCs were calculated, and VOC data were systematically subsampled to simulate and evaluate several potential sampling strategies. Results from the study indicate that sampling strategies for karst springs need to be developed on a site-specific basis. The use of fixed sampling intervals (as infrequently as quarterly or semiannually) produced accurate concentration and load estimates at one of the springs; however, additional sampling was needed to detect storm-related changes at a second spring located in a similar hydrogeologic setting. Continuous discharge data and high-frequency or flow-controlled sampling were needed at the third spring, which had the most variable flow and water quality conditions. The lack of continuous discharge data at the third spring would substantially affect load calculations, and the use of fixed sampling intervals would affect load calculations and the ability to detect pulses of high contaminant concentrations that might exceed toxicity levels for aquatic organisms. Quantitative evaluation of strategies for erosion control on a railway embankment batter

Abstract Strategies for erosion control on a railway embankment batter (side slope) are quantitatively evaluated in this paper. The strategies were centred on control (,do nothing' treatment), grass seeding, gypsum application, jute mat (an erosion control blanket) placement and planting hedgerows of Monto vetiver grass. Rainfall and runoff were monitored at 1 min intervals on 10 m wide embankment batter plots during 1998 and 1999. Total bedload and suspended sediment eroded from the plots were also measured but only for a group of storm events within sampling intervals. It has been demonstrated that vetiver grass is not cost-effective in controlling erosion on railway batters within Central Queensland region. Seeding alone could cause 60% reduction in the erosion rate compared with the control treatment. Applying gypsum to the calcium-deficient soil before seeding yielded an additional 25% reduction in the erosion rate. This is the result, primarily, of 100% grass cover establishment within seven months of sowing. Therefore, for railway embankment batter erosion control, the emphasis needs to be on rapid establishment of 100% grass cover. For rapid establishment of grass cover, irrigation is necessary during the initial stages of growth as the rainfall is unpredictable and the potential evaporation exceeds rainfall in the study region. The risk of seeds and fertilizers being washed out by short-duration and high-intensity rainfall events during the establishment phase may be reduced by the use of erosion control blankets on sections of the batters. Accidental burning of grasses on some plots caused serious erosion problems, resulting in very slow recovery of grass growth. It is therefore recommended that controlled burning of grasses on railway batters should be avoided to protect batters from being exposed to severe erosion. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Relationship between sampling intensity and precision for estimating damage to maize caused by rodents

Abstract In this study we aimed to determine the relationship between sampling intensity and precision for estimating rodent damage. We used the systematic row sampling technique to provide data to achieve precision and accuracy in estimations of rodent damage in maize fields at the planting and seedling stages. The actual rodent damage to maize in 15 fields, each 0.5 ha in size, in Morogoro, Tanzania, was established at the seedling stage. These data were used to simulate the sampling intensities that would provide precision and accuracy. The variations between estimates were plotted against the sampling intervals. The results of this study show that the relationship between average standardized variances and sampling intervals is linear. The heterogeneous distribution of damage in some plots caused variations in the accuracy of the estimates between plots, but a sampling interval of five rows consistently produced estimates with a variance of less than 10%. We provide a standard curve that will allow a decision to be made on the sampling intensity as a function of required precision using the systematic row sampling technique in maize fields. [source]


Tracking control for sampled-data systems with uncertain time-varying sampling intervals and delays

Abstract In this paper, a solution to the approximate tracking problem of sampled-data systems with uncertain, time-varying sampling intervals and delays is presented. Such time-varying sampling intervals and delays can typically occur in the field of networked control systems. The uncertain, time-varying sampling and network delays cause inexact feedforward, which induces a perturbation on the tracking error dynamics, for which a model is presented in this paper. Sufficient conditions for the input-to-state stability (ISS) of the tracking error dynamics with respect to this perturbation are given. Hereto, two analysis approaches are developed: a discrete-time approach and an approach in terms of delay impulsive differential equations. These ISS results provide bounds on the steady-state tracking error as a function of the plant properties, the control design and the network properties. Moreover, it is shown that feedforward preview can significantly improve the tracking performance and an online extremum seeking (nonlinear programming) algorithm is proposed to online estimate the optimal preview time. The results are illustrated on a mechanical motion control example showing the effectiveness of the proposed strategy and providing insight into the differences and commonalities between the two analysis approaches. MASS LOAD ESTIMATION ERRORS UTILIZING GRAB SAMPLING STRATEGIES IN A KARST WATERSHED,

ABSTRACT: Developing a mass load estimation method appropriate for a given stream and constituent is difficult due to inconsistencies in hydrologic and constituent characteristics. The difficulty may be increased in flashy flow conditions such as karst. Many projects undertaken are constrained by budget and manpower and do not have the luxury of sophisticated sampling strategies. The objectives of this study were to: (1) examine two grab sampling strategies with varying sampling intervals and determine the error in mass load estimates, and (2) determine the error that can be expected when a grab sample is collected at a time of day when the diurnal variation is most divergent from the daily mean. Results show grab sampling with continuous flow to be a viable data collection method for estimating mass load in the study watershed. Comparing weekly, biweekly, and monthly grab sampling, monthly sampling produces the best results with this method. However, the time of day the sample is collected is important. Failure to account for diurnal variability when collecting a grab sample may produce unacceptable error in mass load estimates. The best time to collect a sample is when the diurnal cycle is nearest the daily mean. [source]


Study of onset time-shift and injection duration in DCE-MRI: a comparison of a reference region model with the general kinetic model

Abstract In dynamic contrast-enhanced MR imaging (DCE-MRI), sampling of the arterial input function (AIF) is required for analysis using the general kinetic model (GKM). Alternatively, the recently proposed reference region model (RRM) may be employed to avoid the need of acquiring the AIF. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of the AIF onset-time shift and the injection duration, under various sampling intervals, on physiological parameter estimation in DCE-MRI using the GKM, and to compare the performance between GKM and RRM. Computer simulations were performed to assess the mean error (ME) and coefficient of variation (CoV) of Ktrans,TOI and ve,TOI from shifted and dispersed AIF with temporal resolution of 1, 5 and 10,s. With 5-s sampling, the maximal ME of Ktrans,TOI was roughly 22% for the GKM and 0.5% for the RRM. With 10-s sampling, they increased to around 28% and 0.7%, respectively. The maximal MEs of ve,TOI for all cases were under 5%. However, owing to the lower SNR in the reference region, the CoV obtained by the RRM were all higher than those by the GKM. The results suggested that with compromised temporal resolution, the RRM was relatively less sensitive to the AIF onset-time shift and the injection duration compared with the GKM. Residues of zeta-cypermethrin in bovine tissues and milk following pour-on and spray application

Abstract The depletion of zeta-cypermethrin residues in bovine tissues and milk was studied. Beef cattle were treated three times at 3-week intervals with 1,ml 10,kg,1 body weight of a 25,g,litre,1 or 50,g,litre,1 pour-on formulation (2.5 and 5.0,mg zeta-cypermethrin kg,1 body weight) or 100,mg,kg,1 spray to simulate a likely worst-case treatment regime. Friesian and Jersey dairy cows were treated once with 2.5,mg zeta-cypermethrin,kg,1 in a pour-on formulation. Muscle, liver and kidney residue concentrations were generally less than the limit of detection (LOD,=, 0.01,mg,kg,1). Residues in renal-fat and back-fat samples from animals treated with 2.5,mg,kg,1 all exceeded the limit of quantitation (LOQ,=, 0.05,mg,kg,1), peaking at 10 days after treatment. Only two of five kidney fat samples were above the LOQ after 34 days, but none of the back-fat samples exceeded the LOQ at 28 days after treatment. Following spray treatments, fat residues were detectable in some animals but were below the LOQ at all sampling intervals. Zeta-cypermethrin was quantifiable (LOQ,=, 0.01,mg,kg,1) in only one whole-milk sample from the Friesian cows (0.015,mg,kg,1, 2 days after treatment). In whole milk from Jersey cows, the mean concentration of zeta-cypermethrin peaked 1 day after treatment, at 0.015,mg,kg,1, and the highest individual sample concentration was 0.025,mg,kg,1 at 3 days after treatment. Residues in milk were not quantifiable beginning 4 days after treatment. The mean concentrations of zeta-cypermethrin in milk fat from Friesian and Jersey cows peaked two days after treatment at 0.197,mg,kg,1 and 0.377,mg,kg,1, respectively, and the highest individual sample concentrations were 2 days after treatment at 0.47,mg,kg,1 and 0.98,mg,kg,1, respectively. © 2001 Society of Chemical Industry [source]
