Selected AbstractsMethane oxidation kinetics differ in European beech and Norway spruce soilsEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF SOIL SCIENCE, Issue 4 2009D. M. Degelmann Summary Coniferous forest soils often consume less of the greenhouse gas methane (CH4) than deciduous forest soils. The reasons for this phenomenon have not been resolved. It might be caused by differences in the diffusive flux of CH4 through the organic layer, pH or different concentrations of potentially inhibitory compounds. Soil samples were investigated from three adjacent European beech (Fagus sylvatica) and Norway spruce (Picea abies) stands in Germany. Maximal CH4 oxidation velocities (Vmax(app)) and Michaelis Menten constants (KM(app)), retrieved from intact soil cores at constant CH4 concentrations, temperature and matric potential, were twice as great in beech as in spruce soils. Also atmospheric CH4 oxidation rates measured in homogenized soil samples displayed the same trend. Greatest atmospheric CH4 oxidation rates were detected in the Oa horizon or in the upper 5 cm of the mineral soil. In contrast to the beech soils, the Oa horizon of the spruce soils consumed no CH4. A differential effect due to divergent diffusive flux through the litter layer was not found. pH and ammonium concentration were similar in samples from both forest soil types. Ethylene accumulation in all soils was negligible under oxic conditions. These collective results suggest that the different atmospheric CH4 uptake by beech and spruce soils is caused by different CH4 oxidizing capacities of methanotrophic communities in the Oa horizon and top mineral soil. [source] Sediment Loss from a Waste Rock Dump, ERA Ranger Mine, Northern AustraliaGEOGRAPHICAL RESEARCH, Issue 1 2001Michael J. Saynor During the 1994/95 wet season, runoff, suspended load and bedload loss from large scale erosion plots under natural rainfall events were measured at three sites with different treatments on the Energy Resources of Australia Ranger waste rock dump (cap, soil, fire). The fire site has well established trees, the soil site smaller shrubs and the cap site minimal vegetation. All three sites are located on the flat areas of the waste rock dump with similar slopes and cap, fire and soil are local names for the sites. The quantity of bedload eroded from the soil and fire sites decreased during the monitoring period, however, the same trend was not observed on the cap site. Bedload loss from the fire and soil sites is significantly log-linear with time and reduces at a decreasing rate until becoming statistically constant toward the later part of the first half of the wet season. For corresponding storms at each site, bedload erosion was highest from the unvegetated and unripped cap site and lowest from the well vegetated fire site. Site specific linear relationships between bedload and total sediment load have been derived and can be used to derive total sediment load in the absence of measured suspended load. [source] White-matter lesions along the cholinergic tracts are related to cortical sources of EEG rhythms in amnesic mild cognitive impairmentHUMAN BRAIN MAPPING, Issue 5 2009Claudio Babiloni Abstract Does impairment of cholinergic systems represent an important factor in the development of amnesic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), as a preclinical stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD)? Here we tested the hypothesis that electroencephalographic (EEG) rhythms, known to be modulated by the cholinergic system, may be particularly affected in aMCI patients with lesions along the cholinergic white-matter tracts. Eyes-closed resting EEG data were recorded in 28 healthy elderly (Nold) and 57 aMCI patients. Lesions along the cholinergic white-matter tracts were detected with fluid-attenuated inversion recovery sequences on magnetic resonance imaging. The estimation of the cholinergic lesion was performed with a validated semi-automatic algorithm pipeline after registration to a stereotactic template, image integration with stereotactic masks of the cholinergic tracts, and normalization to intracranial volume. The aMCI patients were divided into two groups of high (MCI Ch+; N = 29; MMSE = 26.2) and low cholinergic damage (MCI Ch,; N = 28; MMSE = 26.6). EEG rhythms of interest were delta (2,4 Hz), theta (4,8 Hz), alpha 1 (8,10.5 Hz), alpha 2 (10.5,13 Hz), beta 1 (13,20 Hz), and beta 2 (20,30 Hz). Cortical EEG generators were estimated by LORETA software. As main results, (i) power of occipital, parietal, temporal, and limbic alpha 1 sources was maximum in Nold, intermediate in MCI Ch,, and low in MCI Ch+ patients; (ii) the same trend was true in theta sources. [source] Blood serum branched chain amino acids and tryptophan modifications in horses competing in long-distance rides of different lengthJOURNAL OF ANIMAL PHYSIOLOGY AND NUTRITION, Issue 3-4 2004A. Assenza Summary During long-distance exercise, branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) catabolism could lead to an increase in the blood tryptophan/BCAA ratio and an early onset of ,central fatigue'. Based on these considerations, we studied the modifications of blood serum BCAA and tryptophan (Try) levels in 30 endurance horses competing in rides varying in distance from 20 to 72 km. From all horses, blood samples were drawn just before and just after the end of the ride. Samples were analysed for their leucine (Leu), valine (Val), isoleucine (Iso) and Try levels. Data were processed by anova, using sampling moment and ride as factors, and by LSD post hoc test. Significant differences were recorded among the different distance rides for Leu, Val, Iso, Try, Try/BCAA ratio; the same trend was recorded between samples taken at the start and the end of the race for Val and Leu. The main effect observed was an increase of BCAA levels for all rides, except the 72-km ride; for Try, a significant increase was present in all races, except the 50-km ride. The Try/BCAA ratio decreased in 20- and 50-km races and increased in the others. These data confirm that long-distance exercise involves a mobilization of BCAA. The utilization of BCAA seems to be important in prolonged exercise: in the 72-km ride, we observed a decrease in BCAA blood serum levels, while a major role of Try was indicated by its increase, resulting in a rise of the Try/BCAA ratio. [source] Synthesis and evaluation of novel injectable and biodegradable polyglycolide-based compositesJOURNAL OF APPLIED POLYMER SCIENCE, Issue 5 2007Dong Xie Abstract Novel 3-arm methacrylate-endcapped biodegradable polyglycolide prepolymer was synthesized and characterized. Injectable and in situ curable composites formulated with the liquid prepolymer and bioabsorbable ,-tricalcium phosphate were prepared. The pastelike composites were cured at room temperature using a redox-initiation system. The initial compressive strengths (CSs), curing time, exotherm, and degree of conversion of the cured composites were determined. The composites showed initial yield CS ranging from 20.1 to 92.3 MPa, modulus from 0.73 to 5.65GPa, ultimate strength from 119.9 to 310.5 MPa, and toughness from 630 to 3930 N mm. Increasing filler content increased yield strength and modulus but decreased ultimate strength and toughness. Diametral tensile strength test showed the same trend as did CS test. Increasing filler content also increased curing time but decreased exotherm and degree of conversion. During the course of degradation, all the materials showed a significant burst degradation behavior within 24 h, followed by a significant increase in strength between Day 1 and Day 3, and then continuous degradation until no strength was detected. The composites with higher filler content retained their strengths longer but those with lower filler contents lost their strengths in 45 or 60 days. J Appl Polym Sci 103: 2977,2984, 2007 [source] Characteristic modeling of the wear particle formation process from a tribological testing of polyethylene with controlled surface asperitiesJOURNAL OF APPLIED POLYMER SCIENCE, Issue 1 2007Hsu-Wei Fang Abstract To study the ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) wear particles-induced osteolysis which leads to the failure of artificial joints, microfabricated surfaces with controlled asperities have been applied to generate narrowly distributed UHMWPE wear particles with various sizes and shapes. Our previous study further facilitated single wedge sliding tests to investigate the mechanism of the UHMWPE particle generation. In this study, the attempt was made to characterize the particle generation process into a mathematical model to predict particle volume with a given surface-texture dimensions and mechanical loading conditions. The particle-generation process is decomposed into two steps: (1) penetration of the cutting edge, and (2) lateral sliding of the cutting edge. By combining the indentation experimental data, the viscoelastic responses of UHMWPE was incorporated in the model. The effects of normal load, feature height, and cutting edge angle on the wear particle volume were illustrated from model predictions. Both experimental results and model predictions indicate the same trend of effects of surface-texture geometry and mechanical conditions on the volume of particles. The results of the model predictions are close to the experimental results of the particle generation. However, the particle volume predicted by the model is larger than the experimental results. It is believed that the reprocessing of the generated particles and viscoelastic recovery of UHMWPE in the experiments account for this difference. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 103: 587,594, 2007 [source] Hepatic resection compared to percutaneous ethanol injection for small hepatocellular carcinoma using propensity score matchingJOURNAL OF GASTROENTEROLOGY AND HEPATOLOGY, Issue 10 2007Yong Beom Cho Abstract Background:, Several surgical and non-surgical therapeutic modalities have been used for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). There have been several studies comparing hepatic resection (HR) and percutaneous ethanol injection (PEI) for the treatment of HCC. However, there is still disagreement about the best treatment modality. Methods:, From 130 patients undergoing HR, 116 patients were individually matched to 116 controls from 249 patients undergoing PEI using propensity score matching to overcome possible biases in non-randomized study. Survival analyses were undertaken to compare these propensity score-matched groups. Results:, After matching by propensity score, the major clinical outcomes in the HR (n = 116) and the PEI (n = 116) groups were found to be similar. The 1-, 3- and 5-year overall survival rates were higher in the HR group (94.8%, 76.5% and 65.6%) compared to the PEI group (95.7%, 73.5% and 49.3%) (P = 0.059). The cumulative 1-, 3- and 5-year disease-free survival rates showed the same trend (HR: 76.1%, 50.6% and 40.6%; PEI: 62.6%, 25.5% and 19.1%) (P < 0.001). However, when stratified by Child,Pugh classification, it was no longer the case in the Child B patients. Single intrahepatic recurrence was the most common pattern of tumor recurrence after both treatments. Conclusions:, Patients undergoing HR had a better survival profile than those undergoing PEI. However, when considering which technique to use for optimal HCC management, the individual patient's hepatic function must be considered. [source] Garnet porphyroblast timing and behaviour during fold evolution: implications from a 3-D geometric analysis of a hand-sample scale fold in a schistJOURNAL OF METAMORPHIC GEOLOGY, Issue 9 2003N. E. Timms Abstract Detailed 3-D analysis of inclusion trails in garnet porphyroblasts and matrix foliations preserved around a hand-sample scale, tight, upright fold has revealed a complex deformation history. The fold, dominated by interlayered quartz,mica schist and quartz-rich veins, preserves a crenulation cleavage that has a synthetic bulk shear sense to that of the macroscopic fold and transects the axis in mica-rich layers. Garnet porphyroblasts with asymmetric inclusion trails occur on both limbs of the fold and display two stages of growth shown by textural discontinuities. Garnet porphyroblast cores and rims pre-date the macroscopic fold and preserve successive foliation inflection/intersection axes (FIAs), which have the same trend but opposing plunges on each limb of the fold, and trend NNE,SSW and NE,SW, respectively. The FIAs are oblique to the main fold, which plunges gently to the WSW. Inclusion trail surfaces in the cores of idioblastic porphyroblasts within mica-rich layers define an apparent fold with an axis oblique to the macroscopic fold axis by 32°, whereas equivalent surfaces in tabular garnet adjacent to quartz-rich layers define a tighter apparent fold with an axis oblique to the main fold axis by 17°. This potentially could be explained by garnet porphyroblasts that grew over a pre-existing gentle fold and did not rotate during fold formation, but is more easily explained by rotation of the porphyroblasts during folding. Tabular porphyroblasts adjacent to quartz-rich layers rotated more relative to the fold axis than those within mica-rich layers due to less effective deformation partitioning around the porphyroblasts and through quartz-rich layers. This work highlights the importance of 3-D geometry and relative timing relationships in studies of inclusion trails in porphyroblasts and microstructures in the matrix. [source] Pharmacokinetic characterization of 14C-vascular endothelial growth factor controlled release microspheres using a rat modelJOURNAL OF PHARMACY AND PHARMACOLOGY: AN INTERNATI ONAL JOURNAL OF PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCE, Issue 7 2002Tae-Kyoung Kim The objectives of this study were to characterize the pharmacokinetics of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA) microspheres using a rat model, and to develop a pharmacokinetic model for this controlled release formulation. 14C-VEGF was encapsulated using a solid-in-oil-in-water emulsification method. The microspheres were administered subcutaneously to rats and the pharmacokinetic parameters were compared with those of protein solutions. Intravenous administration of protein solutions resulted in short half-lives and subcutaneous administration resulted in rapid clearance from the subcutaneous tissue, with high plasma concentrations as expressed by rapid absorption and elimination. The subcutaneous administration of the VEGF microspheres produced low plasma concentrations and high subcutaneous concentrations over a period of 7 weeks. The area under the curve (AUC), the time required to achieve the maximum concentration (tmax), the maximum concentration (Cmax) in blood samples and the elimination rate constant (kel) values at the subcutaneous tissue site were selected to compare the pharmacokinetic characterization of VEGF microspheres with that of protein solutions. The in-vivo release profiles of the proteins were slower than the in-vitro release profiles and they followed the same trend as the in-vitro and in-vivo PLGA degradation rates. The PLGA microsphere degradation was the determinant step for VEGF release from the microspheres and its absorption at the subcutaneous site. Microspheres appear to be an attractive system for the localized rate-controlled delivery of VEGF. 14C-Methylation via reductive alkylation of VEGF did not affect its mitogenic activity, however approximately 25% activity was lost following release from PLGA microspheres. This loss of activity may be due to degradation in an acidic environment as a result of PLGA degradation. [source] DFT study and NBO analysis of the mutual interconversion of cumulene compoundsJOURNAL OF PHYSICAL ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, Issue 5 2007Davood Nori-Shargh Abstract The B3LYP/6-31G* method was used to investigate the configurational properties of allene (1,2-propadiene) (1), 1,2,3-butatriene (2), 1,2,3,4-pentateriene (3), 1,2,3,4,5-hexapentaene (4), 1,2,3,4,5,6-heptahexaene (5), 1,2,3,4,5,6,7-octaheptaene (6), 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-nonaoctaene (7), and 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9-decanonaene (9). The calculations at the B3LYP/6-31G* level of theory showed that the mutual interconversion energy barrier in compounds 1,8 are: 209.73, 131.77, 120.34, 85.00, 80.91, 62.19, 55.56, and 46.83,kJ,mol,1, respectively. The results showed that the difference between the average CC double bond lengths () values in cumulene compounds 1 and 2, is larger than those between 7 and 8, which suggest that with large n (number of carbon atoms in cumulene chain), the values approach a limiting value. Accordingly, based on the plotted data, the extrapolation to n,=,,, gives nearly the same limiting (i. e., ). Also, NBO results revealed that the sum of , -bond occupancies, , decrease from 1 to 8, and inversely, the sum of , -antibonding orbital occupancies, , increase from compound 1 to compound 8. The decrease of values for compounds 1,8, is found to follow the same trend as the barrier heights of mutual interconversion in compounds 1,8, while the decrease of the barrier height of mutual interconversion in compounds 1,8 is found to follow the opposite trend as the increase in the number of carbon atom. Accordingly, besides the previously reported allylic resonant stabilization effect in the transition state structures, the results reveal that the values, , ,(EHOMO,,,ELUMO), and the C atom number could be considered as significant criteria for the mutual interconversion in cumulene compounds 1,8. This work reports also useful predictive linear relationships between mutual interconversion energy barriers () in cumulene compounds and the following four parameters: , , ,(EHOMO,,,ELUMO), and CNumber. [source] Molecular polarizability of fullerenes and endohedral metallofullerenesJOURNAL OF PHYSICAL ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, Issue 11 2002Francisco Torrens Abstract The interacting induced dipoles polarization model implemented in our program POLAR is used for the calculation of the molecular dipole µ and tensor quadrupole moments and also the dipole,dipole polarizability . The method is tested with Scn, Cn (fullerene and graphite) and endohedral Scn@Cm clusters. The polarizability is an important quantity for the identification of clusters with different numbers of atoms and even for the separation of isomers. The results for the polarizability are of the same order of magnitude as from reference calculations performed with our version of the program PAPID. The bulk limit for the polarizability is estimated from the Clausius,Mossotti relationship. The polarizability trend for these clusters as a function of size is different from what one might have expected. The clusters are more polarizable than what one might have inferred from the bulk polarizability. Previous theoretical work yielded the same trend for Sin, Gen and GanAsm small clusters. However, previous experimental work yielded the opposite trend for Sin, GanAsm and GenTem larger clusters. At present, the origin of this difference is problematic. One might argue that smaller clusters need not behave like those of intermediate size. The high polarizability of small clusters is attributed to dangling bonds at the surface of the cluster. [source] Iron oxidation state in impact glass from the K/T boundary at Beloc, Haiti, by high-resolution XANES spectroscopyMETEORITICS & PLANETARY SCIENCE, Issue 11 2005Gabriele Giuli The samples have been analyzed by Fe K-edge high-resolution X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy to obtain data on both the Fe oxidation state and the coordination number. The pre-edge peak of our high-resolution XANES spectra display noticeable variations indicative of significant changes in the Fe oxidation state spanning a wide range from about 20 to 75 mol% trivalent Fe. All data plot along the same trend, falling between two mixing lines joining a point calculated as the mean of a group of tektites studied so far (consisting of four- and five-coordinated Fe2+) to [4]Fe3+ and [5]Fe3+, respectively. Thus, the XANES spectra can be interpreted as a mixture of [4]Fe2+, [5]Fe2+, [4]Fe3+, and [5]Fe3+. There is no evidence for six-fold coordinated Fe; however, its presence in small amounts cannot be excluded from XANES data alone. Our observations can be explained by two possible scenarios: either these impact glasses formed under very reducing conditions and, because of their small size, were easily oxidized in air while still molten, or they formed under a variety of different oxygen fugacities resulting in different Fe oxidation states. In the first case, the oxidation state and coordination number would imply similar formation conditions as splash-form tektites, followed by progressive oxidation. Among many UVR-induced damages, skin cancer is of the greatest concern as its rates have been steadily increasing in recent years and the same trend is expected to continue in the future. Ultraviolet radiation increases oxidative stress in skin cells by causing excessive generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to cancer initiation and promotion. Antioxidants have the capability to quench these ROS and much recent work shows that some of these can inhibit many UVR-induced signal transduction pathways. Thus, identifying nontoxic strong antioxidants , capable of preventing UVR-induced skin cancer , has become an important area of research. The use of botanical antioxidants in skin care products is growing in popularity. A wide range of such agents has been shown to prevent skin cancer in animal model systems. New agents are constantly being investigated; however, only a few have been tested for their efficacy in humans. Animal model and cell culture studies have clarified that antioxidants act by several mechanisms at various stages of skin carcinogenesis. This review focuses on skin cancer photochemopreventive effects of selected botanical antioxidants. [source] Isotactic polypropylene solidification under pressure and high cooling rates.POLYMER ENGINEERING & SCIENCE, Issue 11 2000A master curve approach Solidification in industrial processes very often involves flow fields, high thermal gradients and high pressures: the development of a model able to describe the polymer behavior becomes complex. Recently a new equipment has been developed and improved to study the crystallization of polymers when quenched under pressure. An experimental apparatus based on a modified, special injection moulding machine has been employed. Polymer samples can be cooled at a known cooling rate up to 100°C/s and under a constant pressure up to 40 MPa. Density, Micro Hardness (MH), Wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), and annealing measurements were then used to characterize the obtained sample morphology. Results on one iPP sample display a lower density and a lower density dependence on cooling rate for increasing pressure. Micro hardness confirms the same trend. A deconvolution technique of WAXD patterns is used to evaluate the final phase content of samples and to assess a crystallization kinetics behavior. A master curve approach to explain iPP behavior under pressure and high cooling rates was successfully applied on density results. On the basis of this simple model it is possible to predict the final polymer density by superposition of the effect of cooling rate and the effect of pressure in a wide range of experimental conditions. [source] Synthesis and dissociation of amine-blocked diisocyanates and polyurethane prepolymersPOLYMER INTERNATIONAL, Issue 3 2002T Philip Gnanarajan Abstract Substituted N -methylanilines are shown to act as blocking agents for toluenediisocyanate. N -methylaniline-, N -methyl- p -anisidine- and N -methyl- p -nitroaniline-blocked toluene diisocyanates have been prepared and characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopies, and nitrogen content analysis. A new method for determining the minimum deblocking temperature of the blocked isocyanate is described. The method has advantages in that it can be used to find the minimum deblocking temperature of even non-volatile blocking agents. The minimum deblocking temperature of the adducts is found to be in the following order: N -methyl- p -anisidine,TDI adduct,<,N -methyaniline,TDI adduct,<,N -methyl- p -nitroaniline,TDI adduct. The anilines exhibit the same trend when they block a polyurethane prepolymer prepared using polypropylene glycol of molecular weight 2000,g,mol,1 and tolylene-2,6-diisocyanate. The deblocking temperatures are lower in the case of blocked prepolymers than in the blocked adducts. The blocked adducts and prepolymers are reacted with pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) in dimethylpropylene urea (DMPU) and the evolution of carbon dioxide is monitored to study the completion of imidization. The reaction time is in accordance with the deblocking ability of the adducts. The regeneration of the blocking agent is confirmed by gas chromatography. © 2002 Society of Chemical Industry [source] C677T polymorphism of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene affects plasma homocysteine level and is a genetic factor of late-onset Alzheimer's diseasePSYCHOGERIATRICS, Issue 1 2004Tomoyuki KIDA Abstract Background:, Elevated plasma homocysteine levels are known as a risk for atherosclerotic vascular disease and venous thrombosis and have been shown as a risk for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD). Method:, To examine the effect of genetic factors predisposing to elevated plasma homocysteine levels on the occurrence of LOAD, we determined the genotype of a C677T polymorphism of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene and a variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) spanning exon 13,intron 13 boundary of cystathionine ,-synthase (CBS) gene in patients with LOAD and community-based control subjects. Results:, Logistic regression indicated that the MTHFR-T allele was a risk for LOAD (P < 0.05), independently from apolipoprotein E-,4 (APOE-,4) allele. Kaplan,Meier tests showed that in APOE-,4 non-carriers, individuals with the MTHFR-TT genotype have occurences of LOAD earlier than those with the MTHFR-CC genotype (P < 0.05). Multiple regression analysis indicates that MTHFR-T allele increases plasma homocysteine levels (P = 0.0002), while the number of X chromosomes decreases (P = 0.01). Plasma homocysteine level was not correlated with age, plasma albumin reflecting nutritional condition, and the dose of APOE-,4 allele. The CBS-20 VNTR allele showed the same trend to increase plasma homocysteine level as the MTHFR-T allele, but a risk effect for LOAD was not evident. Conclusion:, A genetic propensity for elevated plasma homocysteine levels, explained by the MTHFR-T allele encoding defective enzymatic function, is involved in the development of LOAD, particularly in APOE-,4 non-carriers, and that homocysteine metabolism could be a preventive target to LOAD in the elderly. The results of the velocity measurements indicate that local fluidization in the corners is caused by the geometry-induced maldistribution of fluid flow, and it occurs when the velocity in the corners exceeds the minimum fluidization velocity of particles. The results of pressure measurements within the bed show the same trend as the velocity profile, providing a qualitative verification of the velocity profile measurement. It is shown that the variation of measured pressure drop over the bed with velocity does not agree with the Ergun equation at high superficial velocities due to the severe maldistribution of fluid flow. [source] Comparative growth performance of two Nile tilapia (Chitralada and Red-Stirling), their crosses and the Israeli tetra hybrid ND-56AQUACULTURE RESEARCH, Issue 11 2005Angela Aparecida Moreira Abstract Growth performance of two Oreochromis niloticus strains, Chitralada and Red-Stirling, their reciprocal crossbred and the Israeli tetra-hybrid ND-56 were assessed in net cages under on-farming conditions. Throughout 268 days of grow-out, the strains were weighed monthly and mortality, feed consumption and water quality were recorded. Ten rigid net cages (1.5 × 1.5 × 1.7 m) immersed in a 10 ha reservoir were linearly arranged near the reservoir outlet following a completely randomized design with two replicates for each treatment (strain). Each cage was stocked with 459 fish (120 fish m,3) and fed twice daily to apparent satiation with a commercial tilapia diet following the recommended feeding program. The final mean weights were higher for Chitralada (557.20 g) and the reciprocal crossbreds (522.95, 496.40 g) than those of Red-Stirling (421.90 g). All treatments outperformed the ND-56 tetra hybrid. Daily growth showed statistical differences between Chitralada (2.04 g) and Red-Stirling (1.52 g) but they were statistically the same when compared with the reciprocal crossbreds (1.90, 1.80 g). The relative growth ratios showed the same trend observed in the results for daily growth. The mean survival rate was 98%. The overall growth rate showed that crossbred performed as well as the parental lines. All crossbred progeny presented red colouration with variable pattern of black marks corroborating the dominant inheritance of the red trait in Red-Stirling strain. [source] Course of the modified Rodnan skin thickness score in systemic sclerosis clinical trials: Analysis of three large multicenter, double-blind, randomized controlled trialsARTHRITIS & RHEUMATISM, Issue 8 2009Sogol Amjadi Objective To assess the course of the modified Rodnan skin thickness score (MRSS) in 3 large, multicenter, double-blind, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of patients with diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis (dcSSc) with different baseline disease durations, as defined from the date of onset of the first dcSSc symptom (excluding Raynaud's phenomenon) or from the date of onset of the first dcSSc-related symptom (including Raynaud's phenomenon). Methods Data from 3 RCTs examining high-dose versus low-dose D-penicillamine (D-Pen Trial), recombinant human relaxin versus placebo (Relaxin Trial), and oral bovine type I collagen versus placebo (Collagen Trial) treatment in patients with dcSSc were pooled and analyzed. Patients were divided into 5 groups according to their disease duration at baseline. The linear mixed model for correlated data was used to model the 2 predictors of MRSS: time in study (expressed in months after baseline) and baseline disease duration (expressed in months, calculated from the date of onset of the first symptom characteristic of dcSSc with and without Raynaud's phenomenon). Results At study entry, the mean MRSS value was 21.0 in the D-Pen Trial cohort, 27.3 in the Relaxin Trial cohort, and 26.1 in the Collagen Trial cohort. Time in study was a significant predictor of improvement in MRSS regardless of the disease duration at baseline (P < 0.0001). Patients with a disease duration of ,24 months showed a greater rate of decline as compared with patients with a disease duration of <24 months (P < 0.05). Similar results were obtained when disease duration was reclassified by including the time of the first Raynaud's phenomenon symptom in the definition. Conclusion Our study confirms recent findings that in patients entered into these 3 RCTs, skin thickening did not follow the same trend in natural history as that seen in the dcSSc populations entered into early, open longitudinal studies previously reported. These findings have important implications for study design, in which "prevention of worsening" is the main objective. [source] Direct and indirect effects of climate on decomposition in native ecosystems from central ArgentinaAUSTRAL ECOLOGY, Issue 7 2007NATALIA PÉREZ-HARGUINDEGUY Abstract Climate affects litter decomposition directly through temperature and moisture, determining the ecosystem potential decomposition, and indirectly through its effect on plant community composition and litter quality, determining litter potential decomposition. It would be expected that both the direct and indirect effects of climate on decomposition act in the same direction along gradients of actual evapotranspiration (AET). However, studies from semiarid ecosystems challenge this idea, suggesting that the climatic conditions that favour decomposition activity, and the consequent ecosystem potential decomposition, do not necessarily lead to litter being easier to decompose. We explored the decomposition patterns of four arid to subhumid native ecosystems with different AET in central-western Argentina and we analysed if ecosystem potential decomposition (climatic direct effect), nutrient availability and leaf litter potential decomposition (climatic indirect effect) all increased with AET. In general, the direct effect of climate (AET) on decomposition (i.e. ecosystem potential decomposition), showed a similar pattern to nutrient availability in soils (higher for xerophytic and mountain woodlands and lower for the other ecosystems), but different from the pattern of leaf litter potential decomposition. However, the range of variation in the ecosystem potential decomposition was much higher than the range of variation in litter potential decomposition, indicating that the direct effect of climate on decomposition was far stronger than the indirect effect through litter quality. Our results provide additional experimental evidence supporting the direct control of climate over decomposition, and therefore nutrient cycling. For the ecosystems considered, those with the highest AET are the ecosystems with the highest potential decomposition. But what is more interesting is that our results suggest that the indirect control of climate over decomposition through vegetation characteristics and decomposability does not follow the same trend as the direct effect of climate. This finding has important implications in the prediction of the effects of climate change on semiarid ecosystems. Cohen Abstract Six 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitors (the present cholesterol-lowering drugs known as statins), lovastatin (L), simvastatin (S), pravastatin (P), fluvastatin (F), atorvastatin (A) and cerivastatin (C) are shown to be potent inhibitors of cholesterol synthesis in human hepatocytes, the target tissue for these drugs in man. All six inhibited in the nM range (IC50 values: 0.2,8.0 nM). As daily used cholesterol-lowering drugs they are likely coadministered with other drugs. While several cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes are involved in drug metabolism in the liver and thus play an important role in drug,drug interaction it was investigated which of these enzymes are influenced by the active forms of the six statins. These enzyme activities were studied in human liver microsomal preparations, and in simian and human hepatocytes in primary culture. The following CYP reactions were used: nifedipine aromatization (CYP3A4), testosterone 6,-hydroxylation (CYP3A4), tolbutamide methylhydroxylation (CYP2C9), S -mephenytoin 4-hydroxylation (CYP2C19), bufuralol 1,-hydroxylation (CYP2D6), aniline 4-hydroxylation (CYP2E1), coumarin 7-hydroxylation (CYP2A6) and 7-ethoxyresorufin O -dealkylation (CYP1A1/2). In the human liver microsomes the statins (concentrations up to 400 µM) did not influence the CYP1A1/2 activity and hardly the CYP2A6 and CYP2E1 activities. Except P, the other five statins were stronger inhibitors of the CYP2C19 activity with IC50 values around 200 µM and the same holds for the effect of A, C and F on the CYP2D6 activity. L and S were weaker inhibitors of the latter enzyme activity, whereas P did not influence both activities. About the same was observed for the statin effect on CYP2C9 activity, except that F was a strong inhibitor of this activity (IC50 value: 4 µM). Using the assay of testosterone 6,-hydroxylation the CYP3A4 activity was decreased by L, S and F with IC50 values of about 200 µM and a little more by C and A (IC50 around 100 µM). P had hardly an effect on this activity. To a somewhat less extent the same trend was seen when CYP3A4 activity was measured using nifedipine as substrate. The inhibitory effects observed in microsomes were verified in suspension culture of freshly isolated hepatocytes from Cynomolgus monkey (as a readily available model) and of human hepatocytes. In general the same trends were seen as in the human microsomes, except that in some cases the inhibition of the CYP activity was less, possibly by the induction of the particular CYP enzyme by incubation of the cells with a particular statin. F remained a strong inhibitor of CYP2C9 activity in human and monkey hepatocytes. A induced the CYP2C9 in monkey hepatocytes but was an inhibitor of the CYP2C9 in human hepatocytes. A, S, L and C were moderate inhibitors in both cellular systems of CYP3A4. P was not affecting any of the CYP activities in the three systems studied. It is concluded that different CYP enzymes interact with different statins and therefore differences in between these drugs are to be expected when drug,drug interaction is considered. [source] Assessment of male sexual function by the Brief Sexual Function InventoryBJU INTERNATIONAL, Issue 2 2006ARNSTEIN MYKLETUN OBJECTIVE To present normative data from Norway using the Brief Male Sexual Function Inventory (BSFI, the first patient self-administered questionnaire to assess male sexuality, and used in the USA) in men aged 20,79 years, examine the psychometric properties of the BSFI, explore the impact of sexual function and other variables on overall sexual satisfaction, and compare American and Norwegian normative data. SUBJECTS AND METHODS From public official address lists 3500 men aged 20,79 years were invited to take part in an anonymous questionnaire study, including the BSFI. Altogether 1185 (34%) responded, and the response rates varied with age. RESULTS There was increasingly reduced sexual function concerning drive, erection, ejaculation, and problem assessment with age, and most of the age-effect started at >50 years old. Overall sexual satisfaction followed the same trend, but with a weaker association with age. Analyses of factor structure and internal consistency of the BSFI supported a one-factor solution with good internal consistency. Drive, erection, ejaculation, and problem assessment explained 28% of the variance in overall sexual satisfaction. Being younger and having a sexual partner were also associated with high scores of overall sexual satisfaction. American and Norwegian normative data in the BSFI dimensions were markedly similar. CONCLUSION The BSFI is a short and discrete screening tool for sexual function, and for most clinical and research purposes we recommend using the BSFI as a one-dimensional scale. Whether the same trend is happening in children is unknown. Objective:, To assess the perception of the weight of 4- to 5-year-old children and the recognition of overweight by both parents. Design:, Population-based survey. Participants:, A questionnaire was sent to parents of 1155 4- to 5-year-old children. Results:, In total, 439 questionnaires (35%) were returned. Of all, 90% of the children had a normal weight, 9.3% were overweight and 4.1% were obese. For all weight classes, the parents depicted the child as lighter on both the verbal and visual scale. Of all, 75% of mothers of overweight children stated that the child had a normal weight. In obese children, 50% of the mothers believed that the child had a normal weight. Conclusion:, Children with a weight in the normal range were considered by their parents as a little too light or too light. Overweight was considered as normal weight, and obesity as normal or a little too heavy. The perception of a normal weight in children at 4,5 years is distorted. [source] Direct Estimate of the Strength of Conjugation and Hyperconjugation by the Energy Decomposition Analysis MethodCHEMISTRY - A EUROPEAN JOURNAL, Issue 13 2006Israel Fernández Dr. Abstract The intrinsic strength of , interactions in conjugated and hyperconjugated molecules has been calculated using density functional theory by energy decomposition analysis (EDA) of the interaction energy between the conjugating fragments. The results of the EDA of the trans -polyenes H2CCH(HCCH)nCHCH2 (n=1,3) show that the strength of , conjugation for each CC moiety is higher than in trans -1,3-butadiene. The absolute values for the conjugation between SiSi , bonds are around two-thirds of the conjugation between CC bonds but the relative contributions of ,E, to ,Eorb in the all-silicon systems are higher than in the carbon compounds. The , conjugation between CC and CO or CNH bonds in H2CCHC(H)O and H2CCHC(H)NH is comparable to the strength of the conjugation between CC bonds. The , conjugation in H2CCHC(R)O decreases when R=Me, OH, and NH2 while it increases when R=halogen. The hyperconjugation in ethane is around a quarter as strong as the , conjugation in ethyne. Very strong hyperconjugation is found in the central CC bonds in cubylcubane and tetrahedranyltetrahedrane. The hyperconjugation in substituted ethanes X3CCY3 (X,Y=Me, SiH3, F, Cl) is stronger than in the parent compound particularly when X,Y=SiH3 and Cl. The hyperconjugation in donor,acceptor-substituted ethanes may be very strong; the largest ,E, value was calculated for (SiH3)3CCCl3 in which the hyperconjugation is stronger than the conjugation in ethene. The breakdown of the hyperconjugation in X3CCY3 shows that donation of the donor-substituted moiety to the acceptor group is as expected the most important contribution but the reverse interaction is not negligible. The relative strengths of the , interactions between two CC double bonds, one CC double bond and CH3 or CMe3 substituents, and between two CH3 or CMe3 groups, which are separated by one CC single bond, are in a ratio of 4:2:1. Very strong hyperconjugation is found in HCCC(SiH3)3 and HCCCCl3. The extra stabilization of alkenes and alkynes with central multiple bonds over their terminal isomers coming from hyperconjugation is bigger than the total energy difference between the isomeric species. The hyperconjugation in MeC(R)O is half as strong as the conjugation in H2CCHC(R)O and shows the same trend for different substituents R. Bond energies and lengths should not be used as indicators of the strength of hyperconjugation because the effect of , interactions and electrostatic forces may compensate for the hyperconjugative effect. Kothnur Abstract Microdischarges are miniature non-equilibrium plasma discharges with characteristic dimensions of ,10's,100's ,m and relatively high operating pressures of ,10's,100's Torr. Microdischarges possess several unique properties that have been exploited in a number of new applications. We have recently proposed amicrodischargebased electro-thermal class of microthrusters for small satellite propulsion. These devices utilize intense gas heating in microdischarges to preheat a propellant gas stream before it is expanded in a micronozzle to produce thrust; thereby improving specific impulse of the device over a conventional cold gas microthruster. This paper addresses direct-current microdischarge phenomena in a flowing gas stream. A two-dimensional, selfconsistent, fluid model of a helium microdischarge in a bulk gas flow is developed. For relatively high current/power levels considered in this study, the microdischarge operates in an abnormal glow mode with positive differential resistivity. Increasing discharge pressures for fixed power and bulk flow rates results in a decrease in charged species densities and the electron and gas temperatures. Also the discharge becomes increasingly constricted with increasing pressures, resulting in a more normal glow mode-like operation. Increasing bulk flow rates results in exactly the same trends as increasing pressures. For given input power and pressure, there exists an optimum flow rate for which the average outlet gas temperature from the discharge is a maximum. An increase in input electrical power results in an almost linear increase in the gas temperatures; this property of microdischarges is the key feature that is exploited in our microdischarge-based thruster concept. In this study, the opportunity of direct coupling of TE modules with photovoltaic (PV) cells is considered. This coupling is evaluated through a numerical simulation depending on the meteorological conditions of Chambéry, Alpine region in France, and on the cooling or heating use of the TE modules, through annual energy and exergy efficiencies. For the considered conditions, TE module performances are of the same order as the ones of the vapour compression heat pumps, with a TE coefficient of performance higher than 2 for low values of input DC current. The PV,TE coupling efficiency varies between 0.096 and 0.23 over the year, with an average value of 0.157. Evolutions of the exergy effectiveness of PV and TE elements follow the same trends as the corresponding energy efficiencies but with steeper variations for the coupling exergy yield that varies between 0.004 and 0.014, with an annual average value of 0.010. The direct PV,TE coupling does not seem to be a sustainable option for the summer cooling purpose particularly. A case study with indirect coupling under a warm climate is considered and shows that the use of TE devices could be efficient in housing to ensure summer thermal comfort, but the corresponding necessary PV area would induce a high investment. Jones Abstract The Rhynchocephalia are a group of small diapsid reptiles that were globally distributed during the early Mesozoic. By contrast, the only extant representatives, Sphenodon punctatus and S. guntheri (Tuatara), are restricted to New Zealand off-shore islands. The Rhynchocephalia are widely considered to be morphologically uniform but research over the past 30 years has revealed unexpected phenotypic and taxonomic diversity. Phylogenetically "basal taxa" generally possess relatively simple conical or columnar teeth whereas more derived taxa possessed stouter flanged teeth and sophisticated shearing mechanisms: orthal in some (e.g., Clevosaurus hudsoni) and propalinal in others (e.g., S. punctatus). This variation in feeding apparatus suggests a wide range of feeding niches were exploited by rhynchocephalians. The relationship of skull shape to skull length, phylogenetic grouping, habit, and characters relating to the feeding apparatus are explored here with geometric morphometric analysis on two-dimensional landmarks. Principle components analysis demonstrates that there are significant differences between phylogenetic groups. In particular, Sphenodon differs significantly from all well known fossil taxa including the most phylogenetically basal forms. Therefore, it is not justifiable to use Sphenodon as a solitary outgroup when studying skull shape and feeding strategy in squamates; rhynchocephalian fossil taxa also need to be considered. There are also significant differences between the skull shapes of aquatic taxa and those of terrestrial taxa. Of the observed variation in skull shape, most variation is subsumed by variation in dentary tooth base shape, the type of jaw movement employed (e.g., orthal vs. propalinal) and the number of palatal tooth rows. By comparison, the presence or absence of flanges, dentary tooth number and palatal tooth row orientation subsume much less. Skull length was also found to be a poor descriptor of overall skull shape. Compared to basal rhynchocephalians members of more derived terrestrial radiations possess an enlarged postorbital area, a high parietal, and a jaw joint positioned ventral to the tooth row. Modification of these features is closely associated with increased biting performance and thus access to novel food items. [source] Gliding characteristics of tendon repair in canine flexor digitorum profundus tendonsJOURNAL OF ORTHOPAEDIC RESEARCH, Issue 4 2001Chunfeng Zhao The gliding resistance between the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) tendon and the proximal pulley system was measured using the method of S. Uchiyama, J.H. Coert, L. Berglund, P.C. Amadio, K.N. An (J. Orthop. Res. 13 (1995) 83) in 108 adult dog digits in vitro. The FDP tendons were then lacerated to 80% of their transverse section. Each tendon was repaired with one of the following six suture techniques: Kessler, modified Kessler, Savage, Lee, Becker and simple running suture alone. Each repaired tendon was then tested again using the same method. The Student,Newman,Keuls test for multiple comparisons was performed for statistical analysis. The average gliding resistances of the Kessler, Savage, and Becker repairs were significantly greater than the resistances of the Lee, modified Kessler, and running suture alone repairs (P < 0.05). The Lee suture technique had a significantly greater resistance than the modified Kessler repair and the running suture (P < 0.05). The results of the peak gliding resistance followed the same trends, except that the modified Kessler repair was significantly higher than the running suture alone (P < 0.05). Suture techniques with a multi-strand core suture, with knots located outside the tendon surface, and with multiple-loops on the tendon surface may result in increased gliding resistance between the tendon and pulley system after tendon repair. © 2001 Orthopaedic Research Society. [source] Alcohol Use Disorders and Anxiety Disorders: Relation to the P300 Event-Related PotentialALCOHOLISM, Issue 9 2001Mary-Anne Enoch Background: The robust association of alcoholism with reduced P300 event-related potential amplitude has been largely established in severely affected alcoholics and their offspring. Few studies have examined the relationship of increased arousal, anxiety, and P300. In this study, we sought to determine whether P300 group differences could be discerned in well functioning individuals with less severe forms of alcohol use disorders and anxiety disorders. We were particularly interested in looking at the subgroup of alcohol use disorders accompanied by anxiety disorders. This subgroup has previously been found to have diminished , amplitude in the resting EEG. Methods: Male and female community volunteers (99 unrelated index participants and 78 relatives) and 21 unrelated volunteers from an anxiety disorder clinic were interviewed by using the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia, Lifetime version. Blind-rated lifetime psychiatric diagnoses were assigned according to DSM-III-R criteria. Auditory and visual P300 event-related potentials were elicited with an oddball paradigm and were recorded at the midparietal (Pz) site. Results: As expected, auditory P300 amplitudes were significantly reduced in participants with alcohol use disorders and significantly increased in participants with lifetime anxiety disorders. However, more detailed analysis revealed that, in an apparent paradox, auditory P300 amplitudes were lowest in individuals with comorbid alcohol use and anxiety disorders and highest in individuals with anxiety disorders alone. Visual P300 amplitudes followed the same trends but were generally not significant. Conclusions: Even in a sample of largely community-ascertained individuals, auditory P300 amplitude is reduced in alcoholics, particularly those with anxiety disorders, and is highest in nonalcoholics with anxiety disorders. [source] Evolution of the winonaite parent body: Clues from silicate mineral trace element distributionsMETEORITICS & PLANETARY SCIENCE, Issue 4 2008Christine FLOSS Textural evidence in these meteorites, including the presence of a plagioclase/clinopyroxene-rich lithology and coarse-grained olivine lithologies, suggests that they may have experienced some silicate partial melting. However, trace element distributions in these lithologies do not show any clear signatures for such an event. Pyroxene trace element compositions do exhibit systematic trends, with abundances generally lowest in Pontlyfni and highest in Winona. The fact that the same trends are present for both incompatible and compatible trace elements suggests, however, that the systematics are more likely the result of equilibration of minerals with initially heterogeneous and distinct compositions, rather than partial melting of a compositionally homogeneous precursor. The winonaites have experienced brecciation and mixing of lithologies, followed by varying degrees of thermal metamorphism on their parent body. These factors probably account for the variable bulk rare earth element (REE) patterns noted for these meteorites and may have led to re-equilibration of trace elements in different lithologies.
