Olfactory preference for own mother and litter in 1-day-old rabbits and its impairment by thermotaxis

Abstract We investigated the ability of rabbit pups to display preferences towards various elements of their postnatal environment during the stage of confinement in the nest. Subjects were submitted to a two-choice test during the first week after birth to assess if they could detect and discriminate between does, litters of pups, or nesting materials of the same developmental stage. On D1 and D7, pups were attracted to any lactating doe, litter, or nest when compared to an empty compartment. When two stimuli were opposed, pups preferred their own nest to an alien one on D1 and D7 but not their mother nor their siblings when opposed to alien does or pups. However, additional tests indicated that this lack of preference for kin conspecifics resulted from a predominant attraction to thermal cues over individual odors. Indeed, pups were strongly attracted to a warm compartment (37°C) than to a cooler one (20°C) and once thermal cues were controlled for in the testing situation, the pups were specifically attracted to odors of their own mother's hair and of their siblings. No preference was observed towards the mother's uterine secretions. In conclusion, pups can recognize olfactory cues emanating from their mother and their siblings the day after birth. The preference for nesting materials would reflect in major part the combined attraction to maternal and sibling odors present in the nest. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Male genital system and spermiogenesis of Nanorchestes amphibius (Acari: Endeostigmata: Nanorchestidae): Anatomy, histology, and evolutionary implications

Abstract In the present article the anatomy and histology of the male genital system of an endeostigmatid mite are described for the first time. The Endeostigmata probably are a paraphyletic group supposed to include the most primitive actinotrichid mites. In Nanorchestes amphibius, the testis comprises a paired germinal region connected with an unpaired glandular region. In the germinal region, spermiogenesis takes place in cysts of a somatic cell containing germ cells representing the same developmental stage. In the lumen of the glandular region, the spermatozoa are stored together with secretions of the glandular epithelium. These secretions are probably involved in the formation of spermatophores. From the glandular region, spermatozoa and secretions are released into the vasa deferentia that histologically can be divided into three sections, beginning with a short paired region with strong circular muscles serving as a sphincter, continuing with a paired proximal zone, followed by a short unpaired distal section. The distal vas deferens leads into the chitinous, unpaired ductus ejaculatorius which is followed by the progenital chamber. The ductus ejaculatorius is composed of a proximal section and a proximal, central, and anterior chamber. It is accompanied by a complex system of muscles and sclerites probably involved in the formation and ejaculation of the spermatophore. A similar organization can also be found in Prostigmata, but not in Oribatida. Anterior to the progenital chamber is located a paired accessory gland that probably produces a lipid secretion. Spermiogenesis is characterized by disintegration of the nuclear envelope, condensation of chromatin, and extensive reduction of the amount of sperm cell cytoplasm. The mature aflagellate, U-shaped spermatozoa are simple in structure and lack mitochondria and an acrosome complex. The results do not support the current view that Nanorchestidae are more closely related to Sarcoptiformes, i.e., Oribatida and Astigmata, than to Prostigmata. J. Grass blades as tree rings: environmentally induced changes in the oxygen isotope ratio of cellulose along the length of grass blades

Summary ,,In this study, we tested the hypothesis that environmentally induced changes in the oxygen isotope ratio of leaf water are recorded in grass blade cellulose during leaf-blade expansion. ,,Grasses were grown hydroponically in chambers that allowed for control of relative humidity while keeping isotopic inputs (namely source water) constant. ,,In experiments where relative humidity was changed from 35% to 93% during grass blade expansion, a 10, shift in cellulose , 18 O was observed along single grass blades of Lolium multiflorum . However, statistically significant changes were not detectable with relative humidity of 93% to 70%. ,,It is shown that grass blades, analogously to tree rings, record environmental change on an interseasonal basis. In light of this, care must be taken to compare leaves of the same developmental stage to avoid confusion of environmental effects with physiological effects in interpretations of leaf organic material , 18 O. The results presented here confirm the ability of the current empirical models to predict the oxygen isotope ratio of cellulose in both grass blades that expanded in constant and variable growth conditions. Acclimation of photosynthesis to elevated CO2 in onion (Allium cepa) grown at a range of temperatures

Summary Onion (Allium cepa) was grown in the field within temperature gradient tunnels (providing about -2.5°C to +2.5°C from outside temperatures) maintained at either 374 or 532 ,mol mol,1 CO2. Plant leaf area was determined non-destructively at 7 day intervals until the time of bulbing in 12 combinations of temperature and CO2 concentration. Gas exchange was measured in each plot at the time of bulbing, and the carbohydrate content of the leaf (source) and bulb (sink) was determined. Maximum rate of leaf area expansion increased with mean temperature. Leaf area duration and maximum rate of leaf area expansion were not significantly affected by CO2. The light-saturated rates of leaf photosynthesis (Asat) were greater in plants grown at normal than at elevated CO2 concentrations at the same measurement CO2 concentration. Acclimation of photosynthesis decreased with an increase in growth temperature, and with an increase in leaf nitrogen content at elevated CO2. The ratio of intercellular to atmospheric CO2 (C1/C3 ratio) was 7.4% less for plants grown at elevated compared with normal CO2. Asat in plants grown at elevated CO2 was less than in plants grown at normal CO2 when compared at the same C1. Hence, acclimation of photosynthesis was due both to stomatal acclimation and to limitations to biochemical CO2 fixation. Carbohydrate content of the onion bulbs was greater at elevated than at normal CO2. In contrast, carbohydrate content was less at elevated compared with normal CO2 in the leaf sections in which CO2 exchange was measured at the same developmental stage. Therefore, acclimation of photosynthesis in fully expanded onion leaves was detected despite the absence of localised carbohydrate accumulation in these field-grown crops. [source]


Expression of Apoptosis Regulatory Genes and Incidence of Apoptosis in Different Morphological Quality Groups of In Vitro-produced Bovine Pre-implantation Embryos

Contents Apoptosis occurs during early development in both in vivo - and in vitro -produced embryos, and is considered as one of the causes of embryonic loss. The objectives of this study were, therefore, investigating stage-specific expression profiles of apoptosis regulatory genes in three quality groups of in vitro -produced bovine pre-implantation embryos; and analysing the relationship between cell number and DNA fragmentation with expressions of those genes. The relative abundance of mRNA of 9 pro- (Bax, caspase-9, Bcl-xs, P53, Caspase-3 and Fas) and anti- (Bcl-w and Mcl-1) apoptotic genes was analysed. Differential cell staining and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labelling were performed to analyse the variation in cell numbers and detect apoptotic nuclei respectively. Expression of Bax and Caspase-3 genes was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in poor quality pre-implantation embryos as compared with that of morphologically good quality embryos of the same developmental stages. Moreover, Mcl-1 expression was significantly higher in good quality immature oocytes than that in the poor quality group. Moreover, higher DNA fragmentation was evidenced in morphologically poor quality blastocysts. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that Bax, caspase-3 and Mcl-1 can be used as potential markers of embryo quality to evaluate in vitro -produced bovine embryos. Further studies are required to investigate specific molecular signatures that can be used in evaluating in vivo -derived embryos. [source]


Response profiles to amino acid odorants of olfactory glomeruli in larval Xenopus laevis

Glomeruli in the vertebrate olfactory bulb (OB) appear as anatomically discrete modules receiving direct input from the olfactory epithelium (OE) via axons of olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs). The response profiles with respect to amino acids (AAs) of a large number of ORNs in larval Xenopus laevis have been recently determined and analysed. Here we report on Ca2+ imaging experiments in a nose,brain preparation of the same species at the same developmental stages. We recorded responses to AAs of glomeruli in the OB and determined the response profiles to AAs of individual glomeruli. We describe the general features of AA-responsive glomeruli and compare their response profiles to AAs with those of ORNs obtained in our previous study. A large number of past studies have focused either on odorant responses in the OE or on odorant-induced responses in the OB. However, a thorough comparison of odorant-induced responses of both stages, ORNs and glomeruli of the same species is as yet lacking. The glomerular response profiles reported herein markedly differ from the previously obtained response profiles of ORNs in that glomeruli clearly have narrower selectivity profiles than ORNs. We discuss possible explanations for the different selectivity profiles of glomeruli and ORNs in the context of the development of the olfactory map. [source]
